Kara Walker: Narratives of a Negress

Rate this book
“This collection of Walker's astonishing tableaux dramatizes black-white interactions via horrifically accurate imaginings of one-on-one encounters–encounters that, in their microcosms of exploitation and mutual dependency, seem to speak directly to current forms of black-white relations.” –Publishers Weekly

I'm re-reading this just after reading it the first time. The photos of Walker's work are great but the essays are mind blowing. I would highly recommend this for anyone wishing to stretch their mind on racism in America, the history of Racist America, the power of stereotypes and how/why to subvert them.

*note* I have a feeling a lot of people, regardless of how they identify, might feel a little uncomfortable with some of the issues raised.

A comprehensive overview of Walker's work to 2003 and 4 amazing, dense, and challenging essays (much like Walker's art). I leave this tome changed.

ugly subject matter is not made more understandable: merely pointless continuation of the racist depictions of Black people (by a Black person)
