Dessert First

Dessert First by Emily Cale is a fast read and my first by this author. I was drawn in by Alexis immediately because of her sense of self. Her mother (and possibly her father, although this is never directly addressed) is a very controlling, self centered individual and constantly finds fault with the heroine, even to the point of knowingly damaging her feelings. Alexis has grown up, moved out and is making it on her own with no financial help from her parents in exchange for living a life that is her own, without the persistent put-downs by the people who should love her. She's taking control of her life and that's admirable.
The story begins at a party her mother is giving. (They've previously made a pact that in exchange for the heroine's presence, her parents will make a monetary donation to the elementary school she teaches at.) Once again, dear old Mom is criticizing the way Alexis dresses and also the fact she arrived without a date. I felt sad for her because she actually made a point to attempt to dress in a way her mother would approve of, and to hear that kind of disregard from someone who loves you has to hurt, even if you are estranged. In an effort to try and pull herself together, she retreats to the kitchen to try and find some comfort food and gather her composure. It is during this interlude that she meets our hero, Morgan.
I didn't care for Morgan at all. Morgan is a chef hired by Alexis's mother to cater her party. He's at first a little perturbed that someone has invaded his space and I got the impression he's a bit of a diva when it comes to his work. When Alexis decides to come on to Morgan, in an attempt to make herself feel better, he takes her up on it and proceeds to have a wild sexual interlude on the kitchen floor. Maybe its about living in the moment and without boundaries for Alexis, but I had a hard time understanding a man who would have sex with a stranger on the kitchen floor of his employer - attracted or not.
The writing is smooth and the dialog smart and intelligent but I didn't find the story itself believable, and I think that's due to the length of the story at less than 30 pages. Perhaps with a longer length and more time to set up the attraction between Alexis and Morgan I would have found it more enjoyable, but I did like the author's voice and I plan on looking for other longer works by her.

From page one I felt sorry for poor Alexis. Not only is she at a stuffy party, but her mother comes across as the relative from hell. When she meets up with Morgan you start to feel happy for her. And when things between the two of them start to heat you’re overjoyed. Morgan is portrayed as a very sexy man and what woman wouldn’t fall hard for a guy with the killer combination of good looks and the ability to make mouthwatering desserts? Alexis getting together with him at party and basically right under her mother’s nose, was the perfect revenge for how badly she'd been treated.
Dessert First is a short read, maybe too short for me because I would have enjoyed seeing Alexis and Morgan get together again and maybe develop their relationship instead of just seeing a quick bit at the beginning. Despite that it’s an enjoyable story that can be read in ten or fifteen minutes and perfect when you want a hot reading fix but don’t have the time.

I absolutely loved it! Once I started I couldn’t stop until I finished it. If I had any complaint it would be that the story was too short. I want more. I was sorry that it ended there and I am hoping for another installment to continue the adventure. Alexis is a character I would love to know more about and I would love to delve a little deeper into Morgan as well. Right from the beginning I could feel her emotions. I understood her feelings about her mother and her disappointment in the food choices at the party. I enjoyed her ducking into the kitchen to see if she could find something more appetizing and boy did she! Morgan seems like a fun and creative guy and my guess is that he would turn up the heat in all kinds of situations. This was definitely a story I will be reading again and I would love to suggest to Ms. Cale that she continue Alexis’ adventures.
Favorite Quote: Grabbing her hand, he sucked her finger until no trace of the whipped cream remained. As his tongue swirled over her skin, working its way into the crevices, her breath quickened.

This is a really short story, but there is a lot of character development for its length. Hot and tasty!
