The Foster Brothers #3

Détesté: Lagan (Les Frères Foster)

Rate this book

Would you like the long or the short version of my bio?

The short? You got it.

I write steamy gay romance books and I love it. I also love reading books. Books are everything.

How was that?

A little more detail? Gotcha.

I started writing my first stories when I was a teen…on a freaking typewriter. I still have these, and they’re adorably romantic. And bad, haha. Fear of failing kept me from following my dream to become a romance author, so you can imagine how proud and ecstatic I am that I finally overcame my fears and self doubt and did it. I adore my genre because I love writing and reading about flawed, strong men who are just a tad broken..but find their happy ever after anyway.

My favorite books to read are pretty much all MM/gay romances as long as it has a happy end. Kink is a plus… Aside from that, I also read a lot of nonfiction and not just books on writing. Popular psychology is a favorite topic of mine and so are self help and sociology.

Hobbies? Ain’t nobody got time for that. Just kidding. I love traveling, spending time near the ocean, and hiking. But I love books more.

“You have this…this power over me, […] And if I don’t keep you at bay, you’ll destroy me all over again. Only this time I may not recover.”

oooh I liked that one. I’m usually not much into the professor/student trope but I liked this one. A lot. Killian (44) and Lagan (29) had really good chemistry and I liked their animosities towards each other. The reason for Killian’s hate for Lagan remains a secret for a long time and was only hinted at —but it kept me hooked.

Would he ever come clean to Lagan about how they had first met? He wasn’t sure. By now, what was the point? Lagan didn’t remember.

Besides that there was another secret or rather true story Killian kept close to his heart that made him closed off but also unhappy and lonely.

The story dragged a little in the middle but picked up pace again in the last quarter. The tease for Nordin’s story, tho… that was almost excruciating; I can’t wait to dive into the last one!

The good
+ Lagan's brothers
+ Nordin's vulnerability
+ Killian dropping everything to help Lagan when he needed someone
+ How they openly communicated that they no longer hated the other
+ Killian's vulnerability
+ The extensive talks about consent and safe sex
+ Killian acknowledging he treated Lagan unfairly
+ Lagan's response to that Morris guy

The neutral
o Why do all the boyfriends have to be rich? I loved the way the Foster brothers had set up their lives, supporting each other so they could all start debt-free. Somehow, all these rich boyfriends make it feel like their efforts were wasted, which is a real pity
o Lagan didn't like Killian's home at all, but still moved in. Why not just get a place of their own that they both liked?

The bad
- Lagan told his brothers . This was like one day after he told Killian he was so glad he was there, because he loved it when Killian took charge and made it so he didn't have to make any decisions
- Killian's only worry was about protecting himself. He never spared a thought for what Lagan would have to endure when Killian forced distance between them
- Killian's 'secret' was outed, publicly in his lecture hall, but any aftermath was hidden from the reader. I felt like I got shoved into the epilogue while the story wasn't finished yet
- Killian talking about Lagan's sex life was really inappropriate, and I think Lagan's brothers were right when they said he should file a complaint about sexual harassment. Killian, as Lagan's professor, als had no business at all bidding on a student of his in a bachelor auction, and it was all kinds of wrong. As Lagan's professor, there was a severe power imbalance (even if Killian claimed otherwise), and all this could have severely impacted Lagan's future
- A veiny dick was compared to a Mars bar... "He was so hard by now the head was purple, the veins on his cock protruding like those on a Mars bar."

I loved Jilted: Jaren, and even though it wasn't as good as the first, I also enjoyed Hired: Hadley. However, I'm afraid the downward trend is continuing, because this book was even less enjoyable. It was still fine, and I had fun reading it, but I had expected more. I hope Nordin's book will be better again, because I really like the set-up for his story. Here's hoping the downward trend won't continue!

3.5/5 stars

I definitely liked the first half more than the second half. I think I lost a little interest, but I still liked it. I genuinely loved Killian and Lagan together. Their walls slowly broke down instead of them hating each other one second and not. It was enjoyable, but I’m hoping, begging, that Nordin’s is the best out of the brothers.

Well, they can’t all be winners. 2.5 stars

The first half was good. I loved the premise and was pretty impressed with the enemies to lovers and student teacher (somehow less unethical than I thought it would be) tropes. It had all the makings of a tension-filled romance. It certainly didn’t hurt that the two MCs were fun to read and there was a slight mystery with one.

Instead of capitalizing on the tension created between the two, the author focused more on one MC being consumed about being closed off because he was betrayed once 9 years ago. It was excessive, boring, and did nothing for the anticipation of these two finally getting together. In fact, by the time they did get together, I just wasn’t that into it.

I was extremely disappointed by the end of the book and skimmed quite a lot of it. It got a weird instalove feel and the inclusion of the random janitor giving both MCs “permission” felt cheap and unnecessary. It was just weird and there were a lot of elements that started to feel that way. It was almost like things were added to the story to make it longer because they just didn’t seem to fit and seemed so different from the previous books.

I’m still very curious about Nordin’s story, but his portrayal in this book almost put me off reading more in this series.

Lagan absolutely despises his law professor, Killian Evans. He sees Killian as being arrogant, snobby, a know-it-all who looks down on anyone who’s not up to his perceived standards. What he doesn't see yet is the Killian that has been badly hurt in the past and now is afraid to give his heart again...and he so very much wants Lagan Foster to have his heart. Killian has already formed misconceptions of Lagan also. He thinks Lagan Foster is a lazy, fly-by-the seat-of-his-pants, C+ student who barely can be bothered to pay attention in class.

In this "Hate to Love" story we follow Lagan as his life is about to turn into chaos and when suddenly his world is turned upside down and the person that he least expected to stay by his side and be there for him, no question asked, is suddenly without questions being asked..."THERE"...and a bond between them slowly but surely begins to turn from hate to something they both are afraid of taking a chance on.... TRUST.

Killian isn't without his secrets. He's hiding a past that nearly broke him, and he's too afraid of any relationship after having been hurt so badly in the past. A past that nearly laid his job, and completely laid his love life, into tattered shreds. So, it was no big surprise that in order to protect himself when Lagan comes along and shakes up that structured life that he has created for himself, he tries to resist with everything he can. Then when an unforeseen event occurs in Lagan's life a few days later, and to Lagan's utter surprise, Killian doesn't hesitate to step in and just "be there" in any way that he can for him.

This is another beautifully, emotional story in the Foster Brothers series by Nora Phoenix and it's a story that fans of this author don't want to miss. It's a story about how hate can also turn to love when the right person comes along and shows that love is always worth fighting for no matter how painful it may be. These two men learn that they are much more alike than they first thought. This is a solid "must read" for Nora Phoenix fans. The books should be read in order to see the procession of the brothers found happiness. One more Foster brother to find his happiness...Nordin.

The youngest Foster brother gets his HEA with the last man he expected to fall in love with.

Lagan and Killian had a complicated relationship as student and teacher who didn't exactly get along. The reason for Killian's dislike of Lagan lies almost a decade ago, in a chance encounter in a club that didn't go as he had hoped and Lagan wasn't in his best behavior.

In his story, we learn more about Lagan's background, his past and his biological family. He has some unresolved issues that he has to work through and apparently he also has some things to hash out with his brothers, which he does in a spectacular, drunken way.

Killian is right by his side, supporting him silently and lending a hand when necessary. Their feelings for each other changed through the course of a few weeks or months and as they got to know the other better, they realised that first impressions aren't always right and that what you see isn't always all there is to see.

Nordin is still mostly a mystery though he had some moments where he opened up a little bit to Lagan. He's the last one to get a story and I'm sure it'll be an interesting one, especially considering who he's going to be paired up with.

I loved the first two books in the series but not this one. I absolutly cannot stand killian.
- he treats his student unfairly. Why ? Because 9 years ago he didn’t want to hook up with him
- he thinks he is better than everyone else and so patronising
- yeah he was betrayed by his ex bit he was the lawyer and his ex the client he could have given Armandos case to someone else as soon as he realised that he fell in love with him but he decided to stay on
- you would think he would have learned from it but no instead of abusing lawyer client power Imbalance he’s doing the same with his now student
-he abused his power when it comes to Lagan. The kiss after he payed 75k at the auction, K is the professor and L the student, the Ls father died he is grieving and killian is taking this as a opportunity to install himself in L life and have sex with him when L is clearly in a very vulnerable position. Yeah he didn’t have sex with him while he was drunk but he abused his intoxicated state to ask him Qs L wouldn’t have answered if he were sober
- and after all those boundaries he stepped over he says that he can’t do this because he will get hurt because of all the power L holds over him. Hello do you hear yourself talk ?

Not only is he a hypocrite but also shifts the blame onto L

My actual rating is 2.75 stars. It's definitely better than Jilted: Jaren but not as good as Hired: Hadley. It's a mid-tier romance with some forbidden angst thrown in. I thought Killian was too much of a jerk in the beginning that I wasn't excited to read about the romance.

The author was able to give some reasoning for his attitude, so it wasn't a total wash. But it all felt very petty and childish. As far as I know, Killian is the oldest love interest so far in the series but didn't act like it at first. Lagan was fine; not as engaging of a character as Hadley was. And the trope continues with every brother finding an obscenely rich partner who has a love language of gift giving. Well, to be fair, Reid only offers up a place to stay.

Let's see what shenanigans Nordin (what a stupid name) gets into with his story.

This could’ve been a 4 stars but getting some basic fundamental legal rights wrong really took me out of this story. I feel like this author usually does a good job researching professions but not here 🙃

Also it felt like there were so many loose ends left and I just didn’t understand how major issues throughout the book just weren’t addressed again.

Love this series but this wasn’t my favorite despite it having some of my favorite characters

This was a great enemies to lovers story. I also like that they way the hate starts isn’t even recognized by both me. I like the fact that as Killian gets to know the real Logan he is willing to change his feelings and move forward. I listened to the audio version and it was well done.

✔ Letto!
Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ e 💋

Lagan and Killian

Lagan HATES his professor Killian Evans. Killian Evans HATES his student Lagan Foster. Forgotten by Lagan they had met 9 years ago and Lagan had humiliated Killian. Killian never forgot. Humiliating Lagan in class was done on a regular basis. Lagan continually argued with him and didn't seem to care about his classes. A turning point in the relationship between them is when, in class, Lagan learns of his father's death. Not wanting to bother his brothers he doesn't contact them. Killian stands by his side helping him. However, when return to university they treat each other like strangers - until

There's plenty of hooks in this story and I was immediately interested in the characters and relationship of Lagan and Killian: and also Lagan and his brothers. The characters are very realistic and I couldn't put the book down! The backstories of Lagan and his brothers really made me want to read more of their individual stories and I love how they kind of adopted each other. It made the characters very realistic and I loved their togetherness. Killians backstory was revealed in hints and unravelled slowly with tantalising hints and it's not until its finally revealed that a reader can really get a sense of who he is. It made his character really interesting. I especially loved the university setting and classroom situations and legal debates and discussions. Told from dual POV reveals intimately their thoughts, feelings and emotions as they explore their relationship, break down their walls and fall in love. Yes, there are some sexy steamy scenes that are well written and descriptive. These scenes really demonstrates the depth of love they have for each other. There's an epilogue and a HEA. Recommended. Brilliant!!

More knocking authors off my to-binge list (or at least nearing the end of this author's list). Here's Nora Phoenix's The Foster Brothers series. The third novel is "Loathed: Lagan."
["When mutual hate turns into something else entirely...

Lagan absolutely despises his law professor, Killian Evans. He’s an arrogant, snobby know-it-all who looks down on anyone who’s not up to his standards.

If only he wasn’t so damn hot.
If only he didn’t make Lagan want an entirely different lesson from him…

This one was also a lot. They both had trauma and pasts that clashed with the obvious chemistry between the two of them, breaking their own hearts in the process. They were each other's rocks for one weekend, one perfect weekend filled with so much trust and lust and nothingness that they fell. hard. But there was still secrets and walls. And hearts to break. Somehow, I didn't cry (or sob), but it was a close one.

Obviously, they made it work, after those secrets came out and the walls were forced down, and after they almost lost each other (really, how didn't I cry?).

Trigger warnings: foster care, mentions of suicidal thoughts, bullying (prologue only), loss of parent, brief mentions of mistreatment and abuse, and more

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

Good enemies-to-lovers story!

I think I’ve said it before that enemies-to-lovers isn’t really a favorite romance trope of mine…I may need to reconsider that statement. I’ve read a couple of good ones lately, including Loathed: Lagan. Add in a bit of student/teacher thing, only one bed, an age gap and it really hit the spot for me.

I’m sure that John Solo’s audio performance was also a big factor in my enjoyment of this book (I hadn’t read it with my eyes previously). He is one of my favorite audiobook performers and he did a fantastic job with this one.

At first, it’s a bit puzzling as to why Killian seems to hate his student Lagan but as the story goes on, we learn more and more about why that is. When he and Lagan end up spending time together (only one bed scenario) they can no longer fight the attraction they have to each other.

The story held my attention from start to finish and had me shedding more than a few tears. I love it when a book gets all of my emotions involved. It isn’t all that often that an audiobook can do that so I think the credit for it happening in this book goes to both Nora Phoenix’s excellent writing and John Solo’s excellent performance of her words.

This is the third book in The Foster Brothers series but each book stands alone very well (I still need to listen to book one).

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request and my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

4.5 stars.

I just came back to this series after walking away for a little while. I'm really glad I waited until the series was complete.

This is a good enemies-to-lovers story. Killian, Lagan's law professor, seems to hate Lagan simply for breathing. It's so bad that even others in class have noticed it. The feeling's quite mutual. If he didn't have to have the class, Lagan would've already dropped it.

But, as Nordin (I think?) says at one point in the book, sometimes hate is disguising want.

Well, what do you know? ;)

I really liked Killian and Lagan together once they figured things out. The reader can just feel how much they grow to love each other, though they fight it every step of the way.

I loved seeing Jaren, Hadley, and Nordin again, especially Nordin because he’s been my favorite since I started the series.

I went back and forth on my rating for this book. Most of it would totally be an easy 5 stars, but there were a couple of things I couldn’t get past, which is why I’m rating it 4.5.

Overall, a great addition to the series. A huge thank you to Kazza, my amazing blog partner and best friend, for pushing me back in the Nora Phoenix direction.

Lagan is a full-time paralegal and part-time law student who also volunteers for legal aid once a week. He doesn’t have time to date or even hookup really. He also has a law professor who’s hot as hell but who hates him. Killian, Lagan’s professor, is not in the closet, and it’s a good thing because his closet is filled with baggage and ghosts aplenty that have scarred him to the point that he’s no longer the same man he was ten years earlier. Unfortunately, Lagan is among those ghosts, so when he walks into Killian’s classroom nine years after brutally rejecting Killian, Killian sees red. Too bad he still finds Lagan sexy.

‘“You’re the one who woke me up. Meeting you and spending time with you reminded me of what I’m capable of feeling. For nine years, I was numb, dead, but you made me feel alive again.”’

Lagan and Killian have a complicated but understandable animosity toward each other. Lagan’s dislike of Killian is less complicated than Killian’s but it works. Sometimes what the “hate” is based on doesn’t seem sufficient, but here it does. As with all of the Foster brothers, Lagan has a tragic and traumatic backstory that pushes him forward but also holds him back. And the same with Killian. Killian is aware of his attraction to Lagan, while Lagan is more in denial. So when Lagan is in pain and needing support, Killian can’t help helping him. Though in some ways it was a little unbelievable that Lagan wouldn’t call his brothers (despite all of the reasons given for not doing so), I like how this gave Killian and Lagan a chance to get to know each other and let go of their animosity. Once they open that door, they really develop a beautiful relationship. I also like that while their feelings change over a few days, it doesn’t feel rushed or like a sudden change.

My only complaint is that once they stop hating each other they go straight to forever love and that felt a bit rushed to me. I would have liked to see them spend a bit more time together once they were back to Seattle getting to know each other a bit before declaring their undying love.

Still, it’s a fun, steamy story. And of course, it’s wonderful to spend more time with Jaren, Hadley, and Nordin. I can’t wait for Nordin’s story!

A presto 😘

When I started the series I wasn't sure I would like them but I have really enjoyed all of them and this was another great story. I admit that the relationship felt rushed but they had met 9 years before and at the worst time of Killian's life and Lagan's rejection was the final straw for him as his world fell apart and he kept that rage all the years later and took it out on Lagan unfairly. I was struck by Killian's kindness as he helped Lagan deal with his father's death in Chicago and it was the beginning of the change in both of them as Killian found out what hard life Lagan had led and why he wanted to be a lawyer and Lagan figured out that Killian had been badly hurt in the past. I was really interested in Nordin's part in all of this and that he knew what had happened to Killian and was sympathetic to him and I was glad that Lagan didn't want to know. I was not surprised that Morris tried to humiliate Killian in class since he was jealous and furious that Lagan was not against Killian anymore. I was glad that Killian quit his job at the university and was part of the Foster family and started working with Sebastian Leclerc. Loved that in the epilogue that Lagan had graduated from law school and that he and Killian are getting married. I really forward to Nordin's story.
