The fact that this book was first published in 2002 and has been through at least three subsequent reprints suggests that it's pretty good. In the rather ephemeral world of Christian publishing plenty of books on mission sink without trace, but few (if any) of those come from the pen of Steven Croft. The fact that he also happens to be my boss has in no way affected my opinion of his book....
Transforming Communities is clearly written, theologically and scripturally sound and is based firmly in the practicalities of parish ministry. It says little that is new - which is unsurprising given the number of books on this subject that have been written over the past twenty years - but what it does say is refreshing and encouraging. As with all such books translating the inspiration on the page to the intricacies of the parish is never easy but Steven writes in a way that even the most timorous vicar might think "well, possibly..."
