Enchanted Ink

From beloved romance author, Robin Lynn, comes a hotly-anticipated, fantastical adventure in art, life, and love that you won’t want to miss.

When it comes to transformation, magic only fixes what's skin deep… In a world where an artist's magic brings tattoos to life, ink gone wrong can spell lasting heartache for those unlucky enough to experience it. Jaded and cynical on both life and love, tattoo artist Ashton Andrews is about to find out that even the most deeply-etched scars can be transformed into something beautiful when the right person is holding the pen. Having carried the burden of intentionally-ruined ink on his skin (and the matching scars on his psyche that come with such betrayal), Ashton is understandably reluctant to trust. He’s entirely content to bury his nose in the fantasy worlds created by his favorite author, rather than risk his heart in the real one. …On the other hand, he would like his tattoo fixed. Enter Link magical tattoo artist extraordinaire, devastatingly handsome media darling, and co-owner of the famed tattoo studio, Soul Survivor . Ashton knows that Link has the artistic chops to repair his skin, but is completely unprepared for the charming, persistent, and impossibly understanding man to find a place inside his heart. Through working together, Ashton begins to realize that there’s more to Link than his public persona, the art on his body, and the image he’s created that only goes skin-deep. Link has his own scars to heal, but with a charm or two, a dash of creativity, and equal leaps of faith, perhaps the enchanted ink the two of them create together will be the beginning of something positively magical. ___________________

That's something different. I think it's more of a 3-star book but I just have to honor that it's different. Even though it has a few flaws, it managed to creep into my head so much that it was in my dreams last night and gave me a restless night as I just kept on spinning the story.
A really interesting story in an interesting writing style. Me likes.
Unfortunately:
There is no world building to it.
People just have magic? All humans? And for what, if not just for tattoos? It's a bit frustrating when you knew so little.
You have to be really, really persistent and patient before you understand what happened and what magic tattoos are. If you want to give it a chance, you have to read until the 25% mark, otherwise it will just be annoying.
The relationship that develops between Link and Ash and the trauma they both experienced was heartbreaking and also really well portrayed. There is very little dialog, but very amusing texting. You have to be able to cope well with inner monologues, although I've had worse.
The tattoos, deliciously delicious. I think this book is a must for anyone who likes tattoos.
Sex-wise, the book is rather underequipped, but it's not really lacking. The sizzle and the tiny bit of sex there is are well done and fill the story perfectly, too much focus on sex wouldn't have worked anyway.

Wings. Big, beautiful, feathery wings that would stretch wide and glow, a true extension of himself and how hard he’s worked to earn them. They would be a metaphor for everything Ashton thought he’d never do, never accomplish, but was doing all the same. For his mother, who told him that he’d never amount to anything, that art—any art—wasn’t sustainable, wasn’t a “real” course of study or basis for a career. That magic was a waste of time and energy. For his father, who disappeared into the night without bothering to say anything to Ashton at all. For himself and his own insecurities, for the ways he let the world convince him that he wasn’t good enough but still somehow managed to prove himself wrong. 🤩🥹

Sampled and Skipped

This book showed up on my feed when someone mentioned it had the vibes of Destiel fanfic repackaged. The cover led me to agree, given its use of blue wings (why Supernatural fans all thought Castiel's wings should match his human vessel's eyes, I'll never understand) and the Bleeding Cowboy font that was deeply engrained in 2010s fan-editing. And I'm gonna be honest, here: that's why I clicked through to read the blurb. I may have fallen out of love with the pairing when fandom went batshit crazy and turned my back on the series when it forgot its own lore, but I was feeling nostalgic.

Is this really repackaged fanfic, though? Eh, probably not. Unless it's Ashton Kutcher alternate universe fanfic, maybe. I mean, maybe I'm just declaring my ancient-ness all over the place here, but when I see the name Ashton, there's only one person my mental image can conjure. The character has no resemblance to Castiel other than blue eyes, and absolutely no resemblance to Dean other than being broody behind outer strength. (Actually, that's about the closest most fanfic gets to being accurately characterized in the Supernatural fandom, so perhaps the verdict is still out...)

As for the story itself, I was drawn in by the promise of a world with magical tattoos and characters who are deeply troubled yet fall in love. So I got a sample...

... And proceeded to be bored to sleep, almost literally. The author relies too much on attempting to create intrigue by not disclosing what Ashton's awful, traumatic botch job of a tattoo is, but it's just extremely frustrating. I wanted to shake the book and scream at it to just describe the problem so I could understand if it warranted the extreme reaction of not wanting to show a single spec of skin in public anymore and treating it like he'd been permanently disfigured.

The actual writing quality is far from impressive, as well. It just doesn't feel engaging to me. I didn't even finish the entire sample, because I couldn't help thinking how much I just don't care.

I could not be more grateful for Enchanted Ink being my first ever ARC to receive. From the very first chapter I was ready to DEVOUR this book in one sitting (albeit not that succesfully since I still had other things to do but still...).

I am a reader who usually struggles with romance in fantasy books as it often feels like the main characters skip like 5 steps in building a relationship and end up in one where they know barely anything about the person they supposedly love so much, however, Ashton and Link's relationship - although quite quick to develop - just felt so natural and wholesome that I did not get said feeling from it at any point in the book.

Both Link's and Ash's trauma was explained well and in such manner, that it managed to get the feelings across, although I would - personally - not have minded some more of the angst.

One thing I have to admit though, is that I wish the texts exchanged between Ash and Link hadn't taken up that many pages, but that is honestly the only thing that I was not a big fan of when it comes to this book.

With all that said, after reading this, I will definitely be keeping my eye out for the author's next books.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my unbiased opinion.
I enjoyed this book, the writing was a little different from Fire & Ice but it made sense because it was from the character’s point of view. Although this is technically a fantasy book it felt more like contemporary romance. I loved the magic system but so much wasn’t explained! I think fleshing out the magic system and describing it would give the book what it was missing. The tattoo magic was pretty established but then the charms being applied to other things felt out of the blue and was a little confusing. This might be just me but the texts not having timestamps was confusing as to when and what time of day they happened.
But I loved Ashton and Link’s relationship and how it progressed it was really sweet and wholesome. The vulnerability shared between them was amazing. My favorite scene was by far Aston getting back at Whitaker and being all badass with his renewed wings and secret Grace charm that he just did on the fly. Ashton and Link’s little matching tattoos in the end was so cute and a sweet ending.

This was kind of rough to get through. Theres nothing really wrong with it, but nothing great about it either. It’s set in a magical world where tattoos can dance around and come off your skin. If you suspend your disbelief and decide that’s a perfectly acceptable use of magic, the rest is just boring. The story it’s so low angst, it’s almost no angst, so if you’re into that you might like it. I bought it on audible for the Teddy Hamilton solo narration and he was amazing as always. Brought it from a 2 to 3 star rating for me.

Good Story

This is an interesting fantasy/sci-fi type story. It took me a little bit to get into it. I wasn't quite sure how things would go. After a few chapters though, I found myself getting into it. I'm glad I read it.

I love tattoos. I love getting tattoos, I love people with tattoos, I love books about people with tattoos. I especially love when the tattoos are meaningful to the person wearing them. As a lover of fantasy, and magical fantasies in particular, throw in a touch of magic that allows the tattoos to come to life, and “Enchanted Ink” is my perfect book.

Ashton Andrews is a tattoo artist weighed down by the betrayal of his ex-boss and ex-boyfriend that he literally carries on his back in the form of an intentionally botched tattoo, a tattoo that he had intended to be a metaphor for everything that he had accomplished but instead was all of Aston’s insecurities laid bare.

Enter Link Remington – renowned tattoo artist, co-owner of Soul Survivor tattoo studio and the only person that Ashton trusts to do a cover up. Ashton knew that Link was gorgeous, but he wasn’t prepared for the immediate connection he felt with the man, or that as Link works to repair Ashton’s ink, he’s also repairing Ashton’s heart and soul.

I would call this a slow burn cosy romance. There is no conflict between Ash and Link: they are both deeply attracted to the other but make the decision to put their romantic relationship on the back burner while Link works on Ash’s tattoo and we get a beautiful story personal growth and friendship, free from the typical angsty romance story beats. And if you’re someone who wants a little spice in your romance don’t worry, as soon as the work is finished the clothes come off and all that sexual tension comes to a head, so to speak (if you don’t like spice, there is a ‘clean’ version of the book that doesn’t include the spicy scenes, so you should check that out).

If you’ve read Robin’s “Fire & Ice” then you know that Robin knows how to bring the heat with her spicy scenes. What I adored about these scenes in “Enchanted Ink” is that not only are they erotic but they are deeply emotional as well, not just a fun extra but an integral part of Ash’s journey of healing.

And the tattoos – I have to talk about the tattoos. Both Ashton and Link are covered in magical tattoos that are deeply personal to them and tell the stories of who they are and where they’ve come from, and Robin does a wonderful job of bringing these tattoos to life (pun not intended) for the readers.

“Enchanted Ink” is not a long read, but it’s a beautiful one will have you falling in love with Ashton and Link and rooting for them until you reach the happy ending (and leave you regretting that magical tattoos aren’t a real thing.)

This is the first book I read by this author and it's been an interesting read. It depicts a world where there is magic and this is used in the tattoo making, an urban fantasy with very talented tattoo artists.
It took me a bit to get into the story as it's written using the present tense but from a third person POV and I'm not used to it, but after a while Ashton and Link's story really got me hooked.
Ashton needs someone to fix a magic tattoo that his ex did to him without his consent and he knows Link is the only one who can do a cover-up. Link accepts to help him and they start a journey together that will take them to face and deal with their pasts.
Like I said it took me a while to get into the story, but once I did I liked it very much. The relationship between the MCs is a very slow burn, but it's beautiful to see how they get to know each other and become friends while Link works on Ashton's tattoo. I also loved the text messages exchange, I thought it was so sweet and romantic. They both had traumas that they needed to overcome before being together. I loved how Link opened up to Ashton and the trust the latter put in Link. They certainly made a beautiful couple.
I enjoyed the magic and fantasy part of the plot, although I'd have liked to get more of the world-building of a place where magic exists. Also, there weren't many conversations/dialogues between the MCs due, mostly, to the third person narrator and I wish there had been as I think Ashton and Link's love story was lovely and they were fantastic together.

What did I think of the cover? I loved it.
( did it inspire me to look at blurb?) yes
Did the blurb entice me into reading the book? Yes and I’m glad I did.
What made me choose this book? I was intrigued by the magical tattoos.
Is this part of a series? I thought it might be as it seemed that way at first. But if it is I didn’t find anything and everything got explained in a timely manner.
Who’s my favorite character? Hard to choose between Ash and Linc so I’ll pick both
What did I like best? The tattoos and the text messages. I found it an interesting way to tell. A story and fitting. ( and the end oh wow)
Was there something I didn’t like? I didn’t quite understand where they get their magic. They are not witches or wizards but by end of the book I just suspended all believability ( it is fantasy lol) and enjoyed it.
What made the book interesting?everything from the world building, to the characters and especially the enchanted tattoos.
Was there an HEA? Oh yes a really cute one! Plus lots of morals to this one!
How hot was the book? It had a couple detailed scenes was mostly off page but I’ll give it a 3 ( it says you can get a version with no sex)
Who do I recommend this to?
If you like Hurt comfort, fantasy, magic, tattoos that come to life, authors, fans, celebrity crushes, cute romance spicy romance ( or you can get a clean version) this is for you.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

This book opened right into it with an intense scene of Ashton being betrayed by someone he trusted. The tattoo artists in this world can create enchanted ink and it’s a cool concept, as the ink becomes alive. But, when it goes wrong, it can have damaging effects, which is the position Ashton finds himself in now.

When he meets Link, everything seems to fall into place and it seems they are destined for each other, but Ashton has reason to be wary. The men have an instant attraction and amazing chemistry, but Ashton is reluctant to start a relationship with Link until his tattoo is repaired and Link honors all of Ashton’s boundaries. The men become closer through texts and spending time together and they naturally fall into an amazing relationship.

The blurb on this book mentions “extensive world-building” and I do have to disagree with that. The tattoo magic and what Ashton is able to create is amazing and interesting to read about. However, there is no world building to it.

ENCHANTED INK is the first book by this author I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The idea of charmed tattoos is amazing and I loved the originality of them.

Told in the present tense, I found it a little hard to get into but, once I did, I was lost in the story. Ash and Link are both carrying baggage, although Ash's is more obvious at the beginning. Considering the lives these two have lived, I found them both naive in places, which made the story even sweeter. I thought the slow build of their relationship was perfect. And Ash's time to shine was absolutely perfect and Sam called it brilliantly. *Chef's kiss* Although, Whittaker's cheek made my jaw drop!

I would love more from this world! Sam definitely needs a story. Plus, I need to know how Link and Ash are getting on. And I will definitely be reading more by this author. Definitely recommended by me.

This book surprised me, many times! As an assistant librarian and someone in the depths of many fandoms, I thought I’d seen everything. I don’t enjoy books that have predictable storylines, where I can guess the ending halfway through. It had me on my toes, often bouncing on them while waiting to get off work. This work is well done. I found myself constantly falling in love with the characters and waiting to see what happened next. I enjoyed how relatable Ash could be. I enjoyed the dialog.

Pros:

Relatable characters
Fun Dialogue
Surprising
The story is a fun, engaging read

Cons:

The book, while surprising and a fun read, can be slow at times. It was not one I could finish in one sitting.
Slow build up - which is not really a con, but I thought I’d make note.
Use of present tense - This is a personal preference I have found resonates with many librarians. However, the author does well and doesn’t tend to make the tense mistakes that typically doom these books (there are some cases, but I assume an editor will catch them) —still, the preference remains. While the author does well with this tense, I feel the flow may have changed.

Enchanted Ink by Robin Lynn is an urban fantasy that follows magical tattoo artist Ashton, as he seeks out to have a botched tattoo fixed, seeking out Link, who specializes in rework.

I love the magical tattoo angle, but it sadly takes a heavy backseat to the romance. Romance forward is not my thing, but if that's your thing, this might be for you.

There are a lot of elements that I like, but those weren't the ones Lynn decided to focus on, so I didn't always meld with the story.

This is clearly inspired by Destiel fanfiction. That is not necessarily a critic, but I found myself actively calling the characters by the other names while I was reading.

This is the epitome of low stakes. Still, I wish there was more active conflict. Again, romance alone is not really my thing.

At only nine chapters, it's more of a novella. It made it feel rushed, even though it wasn't.

If you want a magical tattoo artist romance, I'd say check it out.

I recieved a copy as an ARC through book funnel from Robin Lynn

As one who got their first tattoo late in life, I found the whole process fascinating and a bit magical and then got caught up in watching all kinds of tattoo videos on YouTube. The book immediately drew my attention because of the promise of a world where tattoos carry real magical powers and a bad one can affect your entire life. The fact that anyone would deliberately damage a person via their tattoo was horrific and Ashton's longing to have his fixed and the simultaneous fear of something else awful happening through that process were so well written that I was right there with him, heart in my throat as he began to trust Link to fix it. I loved Link and his excitement both at the challenge Ashton presented, the feelings he evoked and the fears of taking on such a job and of getting to know Ashton. A great mix of hurt/comfort, dealing with fame and overcoming trust issues tropes as well as superb character development and world building. Hope the author has more planned in this world.

Ashton is a tattoo artist who trusted the wrong man to give him wings. When the tattoo was done spectacularly wrong (on purpose) he closed himself off. Then he met Link, who gave him hope for the future.

Link and Ashton were nice characters. Both had trauma from previous relationships that they needed to work through. Wading through their pasts was handled fairly low key. I also liked that their developing trust wasn’t fraught with a lot of sexual undertones. I appreciated the slow burn but their chemistry (when they finally got together) was off the charts.

The idea of magic infused tattoos is mind boggling. Extremely imaginative and each tattoo’s magic seemed to be unique to the individual. The bunker was also interesting and well thought out. I’m reviewing the “spicy version”.

Not to be to punny but the book was enchanting.

I just finished reading the advanced copy. I’m so in love. I want to climb out onto my roof and scream at the top of my lungs that everyone should read this book. It’s just so perfect in every regard. The world the built was rich and delicious while still mysterious and left so much to the imagination. The characterizations were just insanely perfect. Robin has the uncanny ability to write love and tenderness like no one else. And yes, I will die on this very particular hill. The story itself was just so beautiful and addictive. Another thing I love is, and this is true of everything she writes, the queerness is not the central theme of the story or even the love story. She brings us two people falling desperately in love who just happen to be queer. And I don’t know about anyone else but I can’t appreciate that. I have read every word written by this author and I can’t praise her enough. Read this!!!!

This was a really really amazing read for me. I loved both Ash and Link so very much. The journey these two men were on was the best, it was heartfelt and magical and swoony. I really want a tatoo from Sour Survivor done by all of them including Link's sister Sam. I want to hang out with them in their place, have drinks and stay over in one of the guest rooms. And the tatoos, oh my gosh. The authors imagination really took off with "Wings" you might say. And the concept of the enchantments of the tatoos, just so creative and wonderful and I really want one! I would love to have a tatoo artist give me their take on all this ink. I believe I will be re-reading parts of this book for a very long tme.

Enchanted Ink is a marvel. It sets the scene perfectly and the reader doesn't have a moment of hesitation in accepting that magical tattoos are a real and gorgeous thing. When you get to the end of the book, if you are anything like me, you want one for yourself too.
Not to mention the magic of the portrayed love story: Robin Lynn definitely has a way with words and she crafts an emotional story, made of healing and love and nurturing in the form of, you guessed, tattoos. Lovely magical tattoos. And when you get to the end you wish you could be friends with her characters, or at least I did.
I enjoyed every moment of this book.

Enchanted Ink is one of those books that draws you in and makes an immediate impression. The magical tattoos are probably my favorite part of the world building. The main characters are both likeable with a lot of depth to them, and the story contains a satisfying exploration of their characters. We as readers are along for the ride as they get to know each other and delve into their relationship. The themes are always my favorite part, and this hits all the beats for me; found family, healing, personal growth, and most importantly... accepting the love you have always deserved.

Having read Robin Lynn’s work before, I was extremely excited to start “Enchanted Ink”. This book is the first in a long time that I have been able to sit down and devour in a day. Link and Ashton’s relationship flows so naturally that I found myself grinning and feeling Ash’s emotions myself as the first half of the book builds in a “will they/won’t they” delicious burn. The vulnerability of both characters made them seem all the more real and the discussion of trauma and healing was executed wonderfully. Amazing read!

Shout out to the creativity of the premise here–tattoos infused with magic, what’s not to love? Extra points too for the architecture of character and relationship development that the author builds on the imaginative foundation: ultimately, this is a story about people, in all the best ways. Baggage and trust issues and chemistry that develops over the course of the story: Link and Ashton are easy characters to like and invest in, and makes for an enjoyable and interesting (in all the good ways) read.

A lovely story with really brilliant tattoo possibilities, I'd definitely have to get one if they were real. Other than that there wasn't really much difference to our world, which was surprising as I had expected that from the blurb. The MCs were both previously hurt and very good for each other, the buildup of their relationship felt right. I particularly enjoyed the text messages. The only thing I struggled with was the frequent use of italics, that really isn't my thing.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and am happy to leave a voluntary review.

A Truly Beautiful Story of Love and Healing.

I have tried for a good number of days to find the right words for this review, but none of them seemed worthy enough to describe how I felt once the story was over.

Enchanted Ink is a beautiful story that showcases how love, comfort and a little patience, can settle and heal even the deepest of wounds.

Whether you like a little spice with your romance, or prefer to leave the spice out, both editions of this book will make your heart smile and your souls believe in magic.

Magical ink? Cool
Not explaining the hows and whys is that?
Hummm

Absolutely nothing happening for almost 80% of the book with lots of internal dialogue in third POV present? Hummmm

Destiel fanfic complete with “Dean” and “Cas”? Hummmmmmm

The bad guy showing up in the last 90% of the book, invading their tattoo parlour/house to go all “I know you miss me and I’m ready to accept you back” and no one threatening to call the police so MC1 can do a whole speech about “you tried to break me but I’m stronger than that”?

I loved this so much, oh my god. First and foremost, the premise is so unbelievably fascinating!! Magical tattoos is so cool already and then Robin Lynn winds such a compelling and emotional story around the tattoo. Ash and Link have trauma and they discuss it like adults: how refreshing it was to read that!!

The sense of homecoming that permeates the story from Ash and Link's first meeting is so welcome and you know there's something between them. I loved this and can't wait to reread it!!

Amazing! As always, well written and captivating. The character backstories explain who they were without overshadowing who they became and the continued growth as they fell for each other. I would recommend to anyone wanting to read something that is low-angst with a happy ending. Anything by Robin is always good.
