Marshall Rosenberg was an American psychologist and the creator of Nonviolent Communication, a communication process that helps people to exchange the information necessary to resolve conflicts and differences peacefully. He was the founder and Director of Educational Services for the Center for Nonviolent Communication, an international non-profit organization.
In 1961, Rosenberg received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and in 1966 was awarded Diplomate status in clinical psychology from the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology. He lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the Center for Nonviolent Communication's office is located.
In the format of a Q&A interview, it’s more of a booklet than a book, but to me, it’s a perfect summary of the important ideas from the author’s longer-form books “Nonviolent Communication” and “Speaking Peace.” I have calendared to re-read every 3 months.
I am guessing it can also be a good appetizer of sorts in preparation for digging deeper into NVC.
This is my first introduction to non violent communication and I am very intrigued. The format of this book is a series of questions and answers by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg that are "unscripted." The process of non violent communication is laid out in the Q&A: expressing observations, feelings, and needs leading to a clear request. This may be a handy resource for people already acquainted with non violent communication, but I'm thinking a more thorough introduction will be preferable. In any case, I am intrigued and excited to learn more both for my personal life and professionally.
Practical method for relating to others (and self) without judgement
At the heart of most spiritual tradition is the instruction to love. Rosenberg has assembled a technique for helping others to relate to others and themselves in love, which is the lack of judgement. His technique uses language as one of the main ways to align people with this way of thinking. It’s a great tool. This book has been assembled from question and answer sessions with Rosenberg — it wasn’t expressly written as a book. So while I appreciated the focused collection of thoughts, it’s a repeat of many other books and lectures I’ve read/listened to. If you’ve already read a lot of Rosenberg, it’s good to know this so that you’re not expecting anything different. If you haven’t read much about Rosenberg’s philosophy, then I think you’ll really enjoy this book.
enriching and broadening perspective on making real contact
making real and true contact with one another. An excellent overview of the process and Rosenberg’s personal and professional grounding in developing it.
Every willing one of us will find tidbits and value from the many gems here.
Rosenberg bridges the gap between spiritual ideals and the gritty reality of talking to people I occassionally find annoying. I found out it's about applying concepts of love in my Tuesday afternoon meeting. To me, spirituality is how I treat individuals. For me, this is an excellent guide for that.
