Auch der dritte Band hat mich überzeugen können. Hier geht es um einen früheren Fall, der Stück für Stück aufgeklärt wird.
Ich mag diese Art von Ermittlungsarbeit. Auch hier war es geheimnisvoll, spannend und mit immer neuen Überraschungen und Wendungen.
Das hat mich ans Buch gefesselt; ich war einfach neugierig, wie es weitergeht bzw. was nun damals wirklich geschehen ist.

This series just gets better and better and darker as they go along. What a book. After a slowish start, it really ramped up, and that ending just blew my mind. What the??? It has been a very long time since a book got me like that. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Heloise and Erik are such great characters, I love their banter and that they would do anything for each other. Heloise hears the ramblings of an old, dying man and can not make sense of the,l, but she knows there is something there. She wants to help the man be at peace before he dies, so she sets off to find out what happened all those years ago. The investigation will lead her down a seriously dangerous path and bring her into contact with some truly vile human beings. But it is not all doom and gloom. A face from her past comes back into her life, which was a lovely storyline.

This is the third volume of the Kaldan og Schäfer series. The main characters have remained true to themselves and the plot is suspenseful, although it may be a bit far-fetched, but then there are lots of implausible thrillers out there.
However, there is a lot of praise for the narrative style, and I must confess that for my part I’m not too excited about it because there are several repetitions and many mistakes (mostly spelling errors, but also grammar mistakes) in the story, at least in the German version.
For German readers:
Deutschsprachige Leser/innen, was haltet ihr von diesem Satz: “Heloises Blick fiel auf die eingerahmte Stickerei an der Wand über dem Sofa und konnte sich ein Schnauben nicht verkneifen.” :-) (Außerdem lautet der erste Satz zwei Abschnitte davor folgendermaßen: “Heloises Blick fiel auf das Sofa.”) Es hätte wohl nicht schaden können, den Text vor der Veröffentlichung noch mal zu überprüfen …
Moreover, I’m not sure whether the author’s research on different subjects is always correct, and more importantly, there are some touchy topics in the novel that lacked the necessary sensitivity, IMHO.
Therefore I think it’s okay, but not a great book.

Like the 2 others it took me about 2 hours to read. I think this one has got the best plot, but there was a part, a strand of the plot which was not fully unfolded and that was a bit annoying. How can you start going down the alley with human trafficking and not fully explore that line of investigating? But maybe that is reserved for the next book in the series as it seems that there is a new one coming this spring :-)

I should perhaps add that I read this in Danish, which explains (partly) why I read it so quickly.

Okay....die ersten beiden Bände habe ich mal wieder nicht gelesen....aber trotzdem konnte mich dieser dänische Krimi wirklich kurzweilig unterhalten....spannend...und überraschend!

Heloise ist Journalistin...und arbeitet nebenbei als Sterbebegleiterin.
Ihr aktueller Patient ist allerdings seltsam....und berichtet von traumatischen Erlebnissen....
Heloise macht sich auf die Suche nach der Wahrheit....und stößt auf unfassbare Grausamkeiten....

Überaus flüssig geschrieben ist dieser Krimi so spannend, dass ich ihn in zwei Tagen verschlungen habe...Leider bleibt die Tiefe dabei etwas auf der Strecke....

Endlich ist er da, der dritte Band der Reihe um Heloise Kaldan und Erik Schäfer und dieser hört sich wieder mega spannend an:

Eigentlich wollte Journalistin Heloise Kaldan nur einen Artikel über Sterbebegleitung schreiben. Doch als sie sich mit dem todkranken Jan Fischhof anfreundet, beginnt ihr die Sache nahezugehen. Jan scheint etwas auf dem Gewissen zu haben. Seine Hinweise führen Heloise nach Jütland, an die Flensburger Förde, zu einem lange zurückliegenden Fall. Heloises guter Freund Kommissar Erik Schäfer ist misstrauisch: Was weiß sie wirklich über Jan Fischhof? Heloise stößt in ein gefährliches Wespennest. Kann sie ihrer Intuition trauen?

In Grabesstern ändert die Autorin die Dynamik der Geschichte, denn Erik Schäfer nimmt diesmal nur eine Nebenrolle ein. Fand ich persönlich etwas schade, aber dafür kann natürlich Heloise auftrumpfen und sie ist für mich sowieso der stärkere Charakter. Die Autorin greift hier das Thema Sterbebegleitung auf, was ich sehr interessant finde, allerdings hätte ich mir hier noch etwas mehr Tiefe erwartet. Der Cold Case um die vor Jahren verschwunden 17-jährige Mia fand ich richtig spannend und konnte mich mit dem Plottwist am Ende total überraschen.

Auch mit Grabesstern liefert die Autorin wieder eine richtig tolle Geschichte ab, die zwar am Anfang etwas braucht um in die Gänge zu kommen, dann aber das Tempo und die Spannung bis zum überraschenden Finale immer weiter anzieht. Der packende Schreibstil und die düstere Atmosphäre der Geschichte geben der Story dann nochmal den besonderen Touch. Eine absolute Leseempfehlung für Grabesstern und die komplette Kaldan und Schäfer Reihe.

Scandinavian Noir. I love these books by so many different authors. The third book in the Kaldan and Schafer series. Centers around Heloise Kaldan’s friendship with a man who is dying alone, and he partially reveals a event in his past which he later refuses to talk about. Kaldan starts digging into the event with a little help from Schafer and off we go on an adventure.

I loved this book. I usually have a good idea of where a story is going and the potential surprises, but I just could not grasp what Heloise and Erik were going to ultimately uncover. Loved the ending, I was really stunned. This is a series worth reading.

Letztes Jahr erschien der erste Band mit dem Titel „Leichenblume“ um das Team Kalden und Schäfer, welchen ich sehr gerne gelesen habe. Ein halbes Jahr später kam „Narbenherz“ – der zweite Band - der Reihe auf den Markt und ich fand das Buch auch gut, aber nicht so stark wie den ersten Band. Jetzt stand Band drei in den Startlöchern und ich war gespannt, in welche Richtung sich der dritte Band mit dem Titel „Grabesstern“ bewegen wird.

Im dritten Band geht es um ein schwieriges Thema. Heloise sollte eigentlich nur einen Artikel über eine Sterbebegleitung schreiben. Doch der todkranke Mann namens Jan ist ihr innerhalb kurzer Zeit ans Herz gewachsen. In einem Gespräch offenbart Jan ein grausames Geheimnis, wodurch sich die Journalistin auf den Weg macht, einen Cold Case zu lösen. Heloise Freund und Kommissar Erik Schäfer ist ein bisschen misstrauisch, da er der ganzen Sache und vor allem Jan nicht so vertraut. Was weiß Heloise wirklich über Jan? Kann sie ihrer Intuition vertrauen? Ein Cold-Case wird neu aufgekurbelt, wodurch Heloise selbst in Lebensgefahr gerät.

Um die schlimme Nachricht vorwegzunehmen: Mir hat der dritte Band leider gar nicht gefallen.
Auch wenn ich den ersten und zweiten Band gemocht habe und ich Heloise sowie Erik einfach sehr ins Herz geschlossen habe, schwächelt dieser dritte Band meiner Meinung nach sehr. Obwohl ich in das Buch ohne Probleme reingekommen bin, fand ich leider die Geschichte und insbesondere den Einstieg nicht spannend und flach entworfen. Teilweise hatte ich das Gefühl, dass zwei Drittel des Buches vom Handlungsstrang recht unspektakulär waren. Leider habe ich auch mit dem Gedanken beim Lesen gespielt, ob ich das Buch abbreche – dennoch versuche ich nie Bücher abzubrechen, da ich immer mir erhoffe, dass noch was Gutes passiert.

Es passierte meines Erachtens nach sehr wenig und ich hatte irgendwie das Gefühl, dass man handlungstechnisch nicht vorankommt. Erst im letzten Drittel nahm ich Szenen wahr, wo einzelne Handlungssequenzen spannend und fesselnd entworfen waren. Auch wenn die Autorin einzelne Wendungen einbaut und nacheinander die einzelnen Verstrickungen offenbart, konnten mich diese leider nicht begeistern. Mir tut es auch total leid, dass ich das Buch derartig kritisieren muss, aber ich bin mit sehr hohen Erwartungen an das Buch herangetreten, da die ersten beiden Bänder gut waren. Schließlich muss ich sagen, dass mich das Buch dementsprechend enttäuscht hat.

Zudem tat ich mich besonders bei diesem Band mit der Zugehörigkeit in das Thriller-Genre schwer. Meiner Meinung nach war es leider kein Thriller, höchstens ein Roman mit einzelnen Spannungselementen sowie Ermittlungen.

Fazit: Fans von Heloise und Erik sollten natürlich den dritten Band weiterlesen! Auch wenn mir das Buch gar nicht gefallen hat, kann es natürlich sein, dass es Ihnen zusagen wird. Für mich persönlich ist der dritte Band leider von der Handlung her monoton entworfen worden. Mir fehlte es an Spannung, an Emotionen sowie an WOW-Momenten. Deswegen kann ich das Buch schweren Herzens leider nur mit 1,5 Sternen bewerten, mit einer leichten Tendenz nach oben. Wenn ein vierter Band erscheinen sollte, werde ich ihn trotzdem lesen, da ich auf Grundlage des ersten Bandes weiß, dass die Autorin es kann!

Betyg: 4,5 av 5 - Den här boken, Pitbull, av den danska författaren Anne Mette Hancock, är den tredje boken i serien om journalisten Heloise Kaldan och polisen Erik Schäfer. Dom två första heter Likblomman och Äppelmannen, jag har läst dom båda två, och dom var mycket bra båda två. Och den här tredje boken var också mycket bra, även om jag tyckte att den inte riktigt nådde upp till högsta betyget, som dom två första fick av mig. Men jag kan verkligen rekommendera alla tre böckerna i serien, och ser absolut fram emot förhoppningsvis fler böcker i serien.

Jan Frishof, a dying elderly man, gives a deathbed confession to journalist, Heloise Kaldan. She knows something is off and begins to investigate but she doubts what he claims. Could this calm elderly man really be a killer? Heloise enlists her friend, detective Erik Schafter for help and a mysterious case begins to unfold.

As the story goes along there are many twists and turns and she uncovers a shocking truth. While I found this to be more of a murder mystery than a thriller, I enjoyed it so much all the same. I really love this lead character that the author has created and you feel so invested in her world. I look forward to more by this author.

Heloise Kaldans Freundin Connie arbeitet ehrenamtlich als Sterbebegleiterin und brachte die dänische Enthüllungsjournalistin auf das Thema. Auch wenn ihre Zeitung Heloises Recherche dieses Mal nicht zahlt, kommt Heloise so in Kontakt mit Themen, die neue Leserschichten an ihre Zeitung binden könnten. Heloises Bekanntschaft mit dem unheilbar kranken Jan Fischhof bringt sie auf die Spur eines ungeklärten Vermisstenfalls in Südjütland, der 20 Jahre zuvor verdächtig schnell für abgeschlossen erklärt wurde. Fischhof kann erst beruhigt sterben, wenn das Schicksal Tom Mázorecks geklärt ist, dessen Tod bei einem Bootsunfall 1998 mit dem Verschwinden der 17-jährigen Mia im Jahr zuvor zusammen hängen könnte, die damals zu schnell zu viel Geld verdient hatte. Heloise kann für ihre Recherche auf eigene Netzwerke bauen und auf ihren Kontakt zu Kommissar Erik Schäfer, dessen Informanten wiederum ihre Vorschriften Vorschriften sein lassen, wenn sie einem erfahrenen Kollegen helfen können.

Heloise, die durch das Sterben Fischhofs mit dem unbearbeiteten Verlust ihrer Eltern konfrontiert wird, hat mit ihrer Recherche nach Mázoreck und der vermissten Mia offenbar Dinge aufgerührt, für deren Verschleierung einige Menschen töten würden. Als ihr Mázorecks Verbindung zu einem Nerzzüchter bewusst wird, der wiederum Probleme mit militanten Tierschutz-Aktivisten hatte, ist es schon beinahe zu spät, noch ihren eigenen Kopf aus der Schlinge zu ziehen. Ein weiterer ungelöster Vermisstenfall bringt Kaldan mit Schäfers Hilfe schließlich auf die richtige Spur.
Anne Mette Hancocks dritter Band um Kaldan, Schäfer und deren hochinteressante Kontakte (z. B. Profilerin und Traumapsychologin) beginnt beinahe gemächlich mit einem ungelösten Altfall, zu dessen später Aufklärung es theoretisch noch genug lebende Zeugen und Familienangehörige geben müsste. In blutigen Szenen und mit krasser Wende am Schluss zeigt Hancock den vermissten Jan Mázoreck schließlich als Schlüssel zu einem Netzwerk, das nicht die Absicht hat, Kaldan und Schäfer lebend entkommen zu lassen.

Mit einem erfahrenen Ermittler und einer von der Entlassung bedrohten Investigativ-Journalistin führt Anne Mette Hancock ihre erfolgreiche Serie auf hohem Niveau weiter und zeigt im dritten Band eindringlich die Bedeutung von Informanten und Netzwerken – auch über Reviergrenzen hinaus.

Voller Vorfreude wartete ich auf den dritten Band rund um die Investigativ-Journalistin Heloise Kaldan und Kommissar Erik Schäfer. Auf Instagram habe ich schon zur Veröffentlichung des Buches ein Interview mit der Autorin verfolgt, in dem sie erzählt, wie sie zum Thema Sterbebegleitung für ihren neuen Thriller gekommen ist.

Mit ihrer weiblichen Protagonistin Heloise, die für ihre Zeitung zu diesem Thema recherchiert und einen Artikel schreiben soll, geht die Autorin in diesem Band tiefer darauf ein. Unterstützung bekommt Heloise von Erik Schäfers Ehefrau Connie, die als ehrenamtliche Sterbebegleiterin tätig ist. Auf diesem Weg macht die Journalistin Bekanntschaft mit Jan Fischhof. Der Mann leidet an Demenz und hat Lungenkrebs. Als er einige lichte Momente hat, erzählt er von einer Schuld, die ihm schwer zu schaffen macht. Heloise lässt dies keine Ruhe und beginnt nachzuforschen. Bald kommt sie auf die Spur eines ungeklärten Vermisstenfalls in Südjütland, der 20 Jahre zuvor verdächtig schnell für abgeschlossen erklärt wurde. Die erst 19jährige Mia Stark verschwand an einem Abend spurlos. Heloise reist deshalb von Kopenhagen nach Südjtland, nahe zur Grenze Deutschlands. Sie entdeckt schnell, dass Mia nicht die einzige junge Frau war, die zu dieser Zeit als abgängig gemeldet wurde. Auf dem Land gehen die Uhren anders als in der Hauptstadt. Heloise trifft auf eine Mauer des Schweigens und erkennt bald, dass die hiesige Polizei damals so einiges vertuscht hat. Sie gräbt immer tiefer und findet einige Ungereimtheiten, denen sie auf den Grund geht. Doch der Fall ist alt, ein Cold Case, und im Ort scheint niemand daran gelegen zu sein, ihn nach all den Jahren aufzuklären. Heloise möchte aber unbedingt noch vor Fischhofs Tod die Fälle aufklären, wobei sie unbewusst den Tod ihrer eigenen Eltern verarbeitet.

Im dritten Band steht diesmal Heloise im Vordergrund und Erik spielt nur eine kleine Rolle. Der Fall beginnt ruhig und wird mit der Zeit immer komplexer. Bald bringt Heloise nicht nur sich, sondern auch Erik Schäfer in Gefahr. Die Autorin setzt, wie schon in den beiden Vorgängerbänden, gekonnt falsche Fährten. Trotzdem gab es für mich, vorallem in der Mitte, so einige Längen. Auch der Fall an sich erinnert eher an einen Krimi, als an einen Thriller. Zum Ende gibt es einen richtigen Knalleffekt, den Anne Mette Hancock hervorragend inszeniert hat und der alles noch einmal auf den Kopf stellt. Diese Wendung fand ich richtig klasse! Der Rest konnte mich diesmal hingegen leider nicht so überzeugen, wie die beiden Vorgängerbände.

Fazit:
Für mich ist "Grabesstern" der bisher schwächste Band der Reihe. Über weite Teile ist der "Thriller" eher spannungsarm. Erst das phänomenale Ende macht wieder einiges wett. Trotzdem erhoffe ich mir für den nächsten Teil wieder mehr Thrillerspannung!

One of my favorite authors strikes again, this one a little slower than the other two but a twist ending I did not see coming and which sent chills throughout my body as any good thriller should. Also continued character development for Kaldan and Schafer, who are still quite easy to love after three books.

Dziś przychodzę do Was z opinią o tej oto książce. Jest to kryminał gdzie morderca wybierał swoje ofiary, młode kobiety, po czym zapadały się pod ziemię i sprawy ich zniknięcia z braku dowodów zostały umarzane. Dziennikarka śledcza zajmuje się reportażem o wolontariacie hospicyjnym, poznaje wtedy człowieka Jana Fischhofema, który umiera na raka, to on wyznaje jej, że w młodości przyczynił się do pewnej śmierci oraz że boi się umrzeć z tego powodu. Heloise postanawia mu pomóc i rozwikłać zagadkę, natrafia na ślad, który pokazuje, że to był nieszczęśliwy wypadek, w którym zginął mężczyzna o ksywie „Pitbul". Czy kobieta zdąży rozwikłać tę sprawę na czas?

Jest to bardzo dobra książka, niby wszystko wiemy, ale tak naprawdę autorka zastawiła zasadzkę i dopiero na samym końcu wbijamy się w szok, co tu się nawyprawiało. Ja końcówkę musiałam czytać dwa razy, bo nie wierzyłam, że tak się to kończy. Od pierwszych stron polubiłam się z tą dziennikarką i jej przyjacielem z policji Schaferem. Postaci wyraziste, których nie da się nie lubić, są to ryzykanci, którzy prawdę cenią ponad wszystko. Tej pozycji nie da się odłożyć, bo ona cały czas siedzi w głowie. Ciekawa, tajemnicza, pokazująca jak policja mataczy, ale nie jednowątkowa, bo dodatkowo mamy poruszony w niej wątek miłosny. Ja polecam i namawiam do przeczytania, bo warto.

The author interweaves the main theme of terminal care with a skillful mixture of sensitivity and directness into a story about revenge and perverse, almost morbid lust. In terms of style, the author has remained true to herself. On the one hand, she writes gently and sensitively, but also with words that sometimes develop a brute strength. Blood is as plentiful as secrets. And right in the middle is her protagonist, who takes up a topic that moves society and yet is alien to most. And the fact that she then almost incidentally met her great love of the past was a plus for me as a reader. In the end, the author caught me off guard so nicely. I wasn´t expecting the ending at all. Although from a logical point of view no other solution would have made sense. Brilliant move by the author.

Heloise Kaldan has evolved. Personally, and professionally. Not that she´s changed in terms of her principles. No. But she now follows her instinct more, sometimes says no, and is more willing to allow a different perspective. Even if that means you have to completely rethink your plan.

I´m excited. This thriller convinces with a strong plot, surprising twists, and excellently developed characters. Everything together results in a suspenseful and great story, which is not only recommended for fans of the author.

For hver bog jeg læser, stiger mine kærlighed til Kaldan og Schäfer.
Og ikke mindst til Anne Mette Hancock.
.
Må være ærlig og sige at det tog mig noget tid for at forelske mig i Pitbull.
Jeg fandt starten en smule kedelig.
Men jo længere inde man kom, jo sværere blev det at lægge bogen fra sig.
Og sikke et fænomenalt plot twist der kom til sidst?! Den havde jeg ikke set komme.

Jeg håber og beder til at der kommer flere bøger med Kaldan og Schäfer, selv om det kunne virke som en lykkelig slutning for Kaldan's vedkommende.
Det forhold Kaldan og Schäfer har formået at opbygge, er et af de forhold man bare ikke ville slippe, og man kan ville følge udviklingen i.

"Ruumiskukan" ja "Kasvojenkerääjän" jälkeen odotin Hancockilta enemmän. Juoni ei ollut mielestäni yhtä oivalluksinen kuin sarjan aiemmissa kirjoissa, ja entisestään pettymystä lisäsi se, että ainakin tämä lukemani painos oli väärällään kirjoitus-/lyöntivirheitä - niitä esiintyi lähes joka kappaleessa. Mene ja tiedä sitten johtuiko pettymykseni liian korkeista odotuksista.

I lover dark thrillers and the book blurb was chilling and absolutely riveting. The book starts of slow and reels you in. This is the third book in the series but reads as a standalone.
We have Kalden who is an investigative journalist and one half of the protagonists who power this series, who is advised by Connie the wife of the other half Detective Sargeant Erik Schäfer, to write an article about Vigil a sort of death doula volunteer group she’s been working with which supports lonely people dying. Kalden writes the article, becomes a volunteer, connects with a terminal man and starts getting startling rambling that stokes her investigative genes and she starts following up on that persons claims. Her nose for the story is spot on and she starts unearthing information about incidents, accidents, missing people, etc. and every rabbit hole seems to add to the growing conundrum with the police involved. Hancock's writing is smooth almost mellifluous and she needs to commended for the realistic characters who are calm and confident of each other as well as flawed enough that as a reader one wants to care for their future in the story.
My only complaint was that the story seems messed up upfront and as a reader I started feeling that more than the quirks in the story the artificial writing kinks were making the mess but this did not disturb the pace or grip of the story. Reading other books of the author could share light on this because it could be just her writing style which gives an impression. Focusing more on the story the story also throws in with its major crime steak to get your teeth on with some addons like little drizzles of relationships, camaraderie, some friendship moments and some romance. All this in a combo keeps you invested in the characters and their flaws which help carry the story along.

I have generated enough interest from this story to look for other books by Hancock and recommend this book and the author for absolutely frenetic reading sessions.

This is third in a favorite Scandinavian series of mine, can be read as a standalone. For sensitive readers there are some graphic and violent scenes. The main characters are Erik, a Homicide Investigator, and Heloise, a newspaper writer. Their paths often cross regarding cases.
Heloise Kaldan is volunteering with The Vigil, an organization for people who are dying alone have companionship. She’s attempting an article for the paper on the organization. When her current client, Jan, shares cryptic information from his past, she is compelled to investigate. She travels to a small town full of secrets and cover-ups going back decades. She seems adrift at this stage in her career and personal life. Perhaps a chance encounter with an old love will steady her. The promise she made to the dying man could cost her life. She’s digging up long buried crimes involving women who disappeared and people want it left in the past. Erik has also been struggling lately, feeling as if he’s lost his instinct. Heloise often relies on his insights and will do so again with this mystery.
I was blind to the clues and the reveal was a head slap for missing the obvious. Many twists and turns in this one! Can’t wait for the next book by this author.

Eh, I don't know about this one. I was intrigued by the synopsis, but I don't think it really provided a fair representation of the novel. When journalist Heloise Kaldan starts volunteering with Vigil, a charity supporting seniors at their end of life, she forms a bond with the surly Jan Fischhof. To be clear, he does not give a deathbed confession, as per the synopsis – he lets slip some odd ramblings which then lead Heloise to investigate further.

When Heloise travels to the small town where Fischhof once lived, she discovers a string of missing teen girls who were connected with Fischhof and his acquaintances. However, many in the town want to keep the past buried – including the local police force. Unfortunately, there were so many elements which were introduced and abruptly left unexplained. For example, the Decker crime family are seen murdering an operative with no follow-up. Men with a connection to Tom Mazoreck break into Erik Schaefer's house, but that is also not elaborated upon further.

I can say that I truly did not expect the reveal at the end, and it genuinely took me by surprise! Nevertheless, this one was a bit of an overall let-down as I really enjoyed the first two novels in the Kaldan and Schaefer series.

This time Heloise is volunteering for a charity which provides hospice support for people at their end of days. Heloise’s client is Jan Frischoff. He’s sometimes lucid and on one occasion mentions a past event which haunts him.

In her relentless pursuit to help Jan and discover the truth, Heloise digs deeper and uncovers a string of missing person cases, murders, cover ups, and police corruption. Soon both she and Erik are facing violent dangers from Jan’s past.

If ever there was a jaw dropping ending it’s in Ruthless. Never saw it coming. It’s shocking but the perfect ending for building anticipation while awaiting the next book in this brilliant series.
