The Colour of Guilt

Rate this book
Julian has everything—the look, the wealth, and the symbolic, social, and cultural capital. But he also carries an invisible the guilt from his mother passing during childbirth.

A silent but intense pain that comes and goes inside of him, like waves on a shore.
This feeling has been following him all his life, despite the help of many therapists or the support of his two best Ben and Karim, who came from the same social circle as him.
There is also Neliah, a lonely but fun girl to whom he feels extremely attracted, and the diva Alika, an old friend who has been relentlessly pursuing Julian for years - one of the many sources of his anxiety. Feeling more and more trapped, he is on the verge of collapsing while the feelings of emptiness and worthlessness continue to grow inside of him.

But everything is about to change when Julian discovers the woman who could have spared his mother’s life, the one destined to be his surrogate mother: the Enigmatic Eleonore.

Whoa my goodness!! The Colour of Guilt pulled on my heartstrings in so many ways. Even though it was a short read, it took time to digest what was happening and the heaviness of it all.

This book follows Julian as he figures out how to navigate his world. He's dealing with depression, anxiety and other possible mental health issues. This book allowed you to live and walk life through Julian's eyes. From therapy, work and business and just trying to find what happiness and ease could look like for him.

Karim was a great friend to Julian, Ben...? He felt hit or miss for me.

WHY DID IT END LIKE THAT!?

The start of this novel seemed really easy going and light but boy was I wrong. I genuinely could not put this book down as I got towards the end. I found my eyes jumping to the end of the page because I was so stressed for our main character, Julian. I think this novel brought me back down to reality, as we don't always get our happy endings in life. The author did give us a sliver of hope at the end so I'm crossing my fingers for a sequel!!!

DNF pg 54/144

It's not a long book and really shouldn't take me very long to read. Technically, the writing is well done. But right from the start, I couldn't get into it. I felt like I was dropped into the middle of something, was lacking in backstory/context, and never really caught up. So, I couldn't really get invested in the characters, and picking it up to read was always an afterthought, not something that I wanted to do for enjoyment. Maybe someday I'll come back to it because, as I said, the quality of the writing was good. I just couldn't get myself to care much about the plot or the characters.

I DID NOT EXPECT THAT PLOT TWIST! OMG!!!

But seriously I was a little 50/50 about halfway through the book but I'm so happy I finished it. God knowing how Julian felt in his recovery and everything, it felt so real. Definitely would pay attention to any trigger warnings for anyone wanting to read this! It's on the heavier side!

Also really hoping there's a second book because it could not end like that!!
