After almost a year away from hockey, Bastian Durand’s return to the game should be a triumph.
Instead he’s taken down by the Chicago Rebels mascot.
It can’t get worse. Or maybe it can. Because the human inside the Rowdy Rebel costume is none other than Pepper Calhoun.
His friend’s sister. His coach’s daughter. And the woman Bastian has wanted for the longest time.
Pepper has always been a magnet for bad luck and now she’s ruined superstar Bast Durand’s big comeback. So that tracks. Everyone, from her father and brother to the fans and press, heck, even the NHL commissioner, hates her.
Everyone but the one guy who should.
Hiding away is the only thing she can think of, except Bast has the same idea. To her utter dismay, he’s determined to protect Pepper from anyone who dares breathe a word against her.
And to convince her that crashing on the ice isn’t all that different from … falling in love.

I don’t know what to say. I seriously loved this book, yet there was one huge plot point that bothered me to no end. I guess I feel like Pepper and Bast, between love and hate.
Well hate is a strong word. Just… I want to believe that one encounter is enough to fall in love–love at first sight and all that–but when that time is short and the conversation not that deep that you can actually know someone, AND when they both hide their identity and lie on top of that, it’s a bit dubious. And since it’s the premise for the whole story, I suppose that makes for a weak foundation.
But by making Pepper and Bast basically instant enemies after an unfortunate accident, then getting them stuck in the same house, the author manages to make it work. The hostility they feel for one another helps them in some way. They aren’t afraid–maybe they’re even happy–to deliver some unsavory truths. Eventually, the affection they have for each other forces them to reevaluate their life before committing to a relationship.
As usual, the Rebels are nosy. What I found interesting this time is that both Pepper and Bastian are outsiders–Pepper is only here because she came back to her father, the team’s coach, after some troubles, and Bast has just started with the Rebels, and hasn’t even been on the ice with the team–and yet they’re adopted by the whole group. Teammates and team manager, coach, or even brother, it seemed easy enough for Bastian to be accepted, while because she’s trying to lay low, Pepper is more discreet. But circumstances make her befriending some of the WAGs, and she even works for Theo and Elle. So of course the Rebels are invested, either on helping them after the accident, or on pushing them together once they learn they’re a possibility. Boundaries, guys!
But they show Bast and Pepper what it means to support someone, and since it’s at the center of their relationship, maybe it was a good example. And of course, it was great to see again all those lovely characters.
So not a complete success, but a pretty good book nonetheless.

Superstar by Kate Meader is a captivating hockey romance that had me hooked from the very beginning. As a fan of Meader's work in this genre, I was excited to dive into this latest offering, and it did not disappoint. The story revolves around Bastian, the star player on his team, and Pepper, his coach’s daughter. From the moment they meet, their chemistry is undeniable, despite their vastly different personalities. Meader's ability to create a believable "meet cute" is on full display here, and I found myself rooting for these two from the very beginning. Bastian's character is a complex one. He is a great guy on the ice, but when it comes to Pepper, he can be grumpy and difficult to read. Meader does an excellent job of portraying the mixed emotions that can come with having feelings for someone, and I found myself feeling confused and frustrated right along with Pepper. However, as the story progresses, Bastian begins to open up and let his guard down, revealing a more vulnerable side to his character. Pepper is a strong and determined person. Her interactions with Bastian are always entertaining, and I loved seeing her stand up to him and challenge him in ways he never expected but also being vulnerable at times. The chemistry between Bastian and Pepper is off the charts, and Meader does not shy away from exploring their physical connection. The steamy scenes are well-written and never feel gratuitous, adding to the overall romance of the story. Overall, Superstar is a beautifully written sports romance that will leave you smiling and feeling warm inside. Meader's writing is engaging and entertaining, and her characters are well-developed and relatable. If you're a fan of hockey romances or just love a good love story, this book is definitely worth checking out
I'm surprised that Pepper and Bast ended up together with how they met the first time and then the disaster on ice. Wasn't really sure Bast could get past it all! I felt bad for Pepper, by taking the high road everyone thought bad of her. I hated that Bast acted like a petulant toddler and made her drive him to the cottage. It ended up working out for them as the forced closeness and being snowed in gave them time to talk about things and both shared very personal things. From there things were different and it sucked that their bubble was burst.
Back home things continued to change for them, even as they were apart. I liked how both of them made moves to protect the other and was happy when they finally were able to talk, really talk about what happened and what they wanted for the future. It made the ending all the happier.
This book feels so incredibly misogynistic and hypocritical it drove me insane. I would’ve given it 1 star but I enjoyed the H and h enough to add an extra star for them.
Throughout the WHOLE book the heroine is called ‘bad news’ by everyone (her father, her brother, the H, his brother, journalists, hockey fans/media) all because she broke off an engagement with a hockey player who then went on a self-destructive spiral and ended up moving from the NHL to AHL.
She’s blamed for ALL of it, because why on earth would they hold a man accountable? Let’s just blame his actions on his most recent ex.
Everyone was saying that she ‘has a reputation with athletes’ because of ONE relationship
It drove me insane because not only was it misogynistic but it was wildly hypocritical. It’s insanely common in sports romances that when the main couple is going through tough times/break up, it negatively impacts the H’s game. And yet not a single one of the other hockey players (except Theo, he was great) used critical thinking skills and thought that maybe blaming a woman for a man’s failures is shitty especially since in their own relationships/books they also went through breakups where they fucked up their games, did they call their own wives ‘bad news’? Or is it only okay if the relationship ends in a happily ever after?
It's fine. Very breezy, very surface emotions, and then wrapped into a bow too easily.
And just when it's a tad boring, fucking asshat annoying Tara pops up! Oh fuck no. God I wish she could be erased from this entire series. She's like a case of chlamydia that you can't get rid of. 😐
Bast and Pepper are a great pair. It feels like they had more than one meet cute and what a way to start a relationship, with lies and injuries 😉. So often part of the magic of the HEA is the couple bringing out the best in each other but it appears in this story help was needed to bring out the not so best stuff and somehow it was even more satisfying.
Kate Meader is back with another fabulous addition to this series!! You will love Bastian Durand & Pepper Calhoun’s book, they’re a great couple!! It’s always a pleasure to catch up with The Rebels hockey family, entertaining as always!! Bast meets Pepper at a low point in his life & career & during a low point in her life after she was destroyed in the press due to her ex-fiancée hockey player. They helped each other & stood up for each other but due to the circumstances in their lives didn’t think they would be able to be together but true love conquered all. This book has all the feels, wonderful characters including the adorable Bucky 🐾 & baby Hatch. One of my favorite scenes was Reid & Bast having their talk & quoting Like A Virgin by Madonna, so funny!! I voluntarily read for an honest review & definitely recommend this amazing book!!
Sweet romance, I really liked how these two met and the zing of attraction they had for one another in the beginning but I felt it kinda fell flat after that since so much time went by. The story felt rushed once they were pushed together that they as a couple didn’t really develop much. Book could have been longer and could have used a little more heat. The zing kinda fizzled for me.
SUPERSTAR is the seventh instalment in Kate Meader’s contemporary, adult ROOKIE REBELS erotic, hockey romance series- a spin off from the author’s CHICAGO REBELS series. This is twenty-six year old, Chicago Rebels player Bastian Durand, and twenty-two year old Chicago Rebels coach’s daughter Pepper Calhoun’s story line. SUPERSTAR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Bastian is the half-brother to Reid Durant (Dear Roomie #5).
Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Bast and Pepper) SUPERSTAR follows the building romance and relationship between twenty-six year old, Chicago Rebels player Bastian Durand, and twenty-two year old Chicago Rebels coach’s daughter Pepper Calhoun. Bastian Durand spent months nursing an almost career ending wrist injury when he met embroiled Chicago Rebel’s coach’s daughter Pepper Calhoun. Bastian was in no position to face down a woman whose reputation was in tatters but a trade to the Chicago Rebels placed our couple in the direct line of fire. Struggling with a direction in life, Pepper would find herself the team’s newest ‘mascot’, a mascot that was about to reinjure Bastian’s wrist and also his pride. Needing a break from ..well..everything, Bastian’s brother offers up his cabin in Michigan, a cabin Bastian was about to share with our story line heroine. Pepper Calhoun wasn’t given a choice when her father forced her to drive Bastian to his home away from home, the cabin where Pepper and Bastian would come clean about demons from the past. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Bastian and Pepper, and the potential fall-out as their return home forces Pepper and Bastian to confront the people who continue to make their lives miserable.
Pepper Calhoun’s reputation was destroyed when she supposedly ‘broke the heart’ of another professional hockey player but all was not as it appeared to be, and Pepper refused to reveal the truth about what happened or why. Bearing the brunt of the online and media hate Pepper would become the target and punching bag of everyone who wanted someone to blame including the father and brother she so desperately wanted to please. Bastian Durand’s family dynamics was in tatters having been forced to compete against his half brother Reid, who in turn almost destroyed Bastian’s career months earlier. Needing time to reconsider his future going forward, Bastian would have to face his demons as well as admitting his attraction and love for our story line heroine.
The relationship between Bastian and Pepper is a frenemies to lovers relationship in which secrets revealed would shine a different light on our story. line couple.Few people were aware of the truth: about Pepper’s break up with left winger Kent Gallagher; fewer people knew about the forced rivalry between the brothers on the ice. Forced to spend several nights together in the wake of a Michigan snow stormed, helped Pepper and Bastian free themselves from the demons they continued to ride. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
We are reintroduced to several members of the Chicago Rebels hockey team, as well as coach John Calhoun, Bastian’s half brother Reid and his wife Kennedy; Pepper’s brother Connor Calhoun, and via text Pepper’s ex Kent Gallagher., and Bastian’s father Henri Duranc.
SUPERSTAR is a story of secrets and lies, misunderstanding and judgemental family, friendships and relationships, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is entertaining and engaging; the romance is captivating and passionate; the characters are desperate, determined and dynamic.
3.5-3.75 stars. This was a cute book. Superstar is book seven in the Rookie Rebels series. This book is Bastian/ Bast Durand and Pepper's book. Bast is Reid's younger brother and is new to the Rebels, having been traded from another NHL team. Pepper is his coach's daughter, who is between jobs after a bad situation with an ex, who was also a pro hockey player. They happen to meet in a bar, not knowing who each other was, and have an instant chemistry and connection. But Pepper soon realizes who Bast is and she's not interested in dating another hockey player. When Bast figures out who Pepper is, he is angry and treats her badly. She got a reputation for dumping her ex-player boyfriend and is blamed when his career tanked after that. So, they don't have plans to see each other again, despite their attraction. When her father asks her to play substitute for the team mascot on game day, she and Reid collide on the ice and he breaks his wrist. He blames her for not being able to play, as do the press, fans, her father and team, when it wasn't her fault. She really gets raked over the coals by the public, which is the last thing she needs. When she tries to escape a particularly tense situation with the paparazzi, Bast steps in and they end up holing up together for a bit. The sparks between them get stronger as the spend time together and feelings grow stronger, until they fall for each other.
This was a good story. I really liked Pepper but I felt so bad for her. The first half of the book was everyone in the world hating on her, including her father and it was all too much. Her father was too mean and I never really got over it. Even Bast was pretty awful to her for a while. She really had done nothing wrong to deserve the treatment. The second half was better though. I did need more grovel and apology from Bast to be able to fully forgive him. I also wanted more couple time spent falling in love and less separation afterward. I needed more drive from the both of them to act like they really wanted to be together and make a relationship work between them so that I could feel their love better. It was cute, but I felt like their falling in love period had just started and then the book ended. Still, after the first half, the book ended up being a cute, easy and enjoyable read. I just wanted more resolution.
Overall Superstar was a good addition to this fun hockey romance series. I look forward to more from it and from Ms. Meader in the future!
Audio-Emma Wilder & Stephen Dexter. Omg Bast was perfect for Pepper. They were perfect for each other. This lust at first sight, enemies to lovers, hockey, coaches daughter, forbidden romance was everything I enjoy. It was tough listening to all the negative press for Pepper all because she was protecting her ex-fiancé with his huge secret. But Bastian was there to stand up for her. Their chemistry was off the charts.
I really liked this until the end and then it kind of fell apart for me.
I understand that time frame of them being stranded seemed short but I didn't need the stressing of "love at first sight" to sell it. The fact that they were stranded allowed for some real open communication and understanding that honestly was undercut by "I've loved you for months". A shame because otherwise these two were very fun.
Bast is known as Mr. Nice Guy so when he goes almost feral to defend Pepper no one is more surprised than she is.
I loved this one so much. Both Bast and Pepper have emotional baggage they need to deal with and find that with the support of the other, they’re more than ready to do so.
Also we get some updates on the other Rookie couples and everyone’s favorite doggy, Bucky!
I received a complimentary review copy of this book but all opinions are my own.
I received an ARC of this book and was thrilled to read another book from Kate Meader. Her books are consistently outstanding and this one is also wonderful. Bastian Durand is Reid’s younger brother. At the end of his story, Dear Roomie, Reid broke Bastian’s wrist during a faceoff between Chicago’s rival teams, the Rebels and the Hawks. Bast has spent all of this time recovering and rehabbing his wrist, unable to play, and feeling very discouraged. Although thrilled that he and Reid have reconnected and have a close relationship now, he also masks his anger toward Reid, not only for breaking his wrist, but also for treating him poorly when they were growing up.
He goes to the local hangout at Reid’s insistence, and while waiting for him, he meets a mysterious woman who refuses to give her name. She’s waiting for a friend who calls out her name when she arrives and reveals Pepper Calhoun to Bast. He immediately recoils, believing the rumors and gossip about her, but as the weeks and months pass, he can’t get her out of his mind. She also fantasizes about a life with him but believes she is bad luck and he doesn’t deserve that. Her self-confidence and self-worth really took a beating in her last relationship and the aftermath.
Pepper was studying early childhood education, months from achieving her degree, and working in a preschool when her world fell apart and she needed to leave Phoenix and move back to Chicago. Now, she acts as a part-time nanny for Theo and Elle’s son Hatch. Although she loves Hatch, she’s frustrated she cannot get a job in her field because everyone seems to know her name and the scandal associated with it. She becomes friends with Elle, and Theo has never met a stranger, so she’s friends with him too. I love how he refers to his wife as Elle-oh-Elle!
The next time Pepper and Bast meet, there’s some kind of altercation during which Pepper refuses to listen to him and walks away. Sometime later, Pepper sees Bast, at a team party, while looking out the window of Hatch’s room. She had hoped to never see him again. “Because she rarely got what she wished for, here he was ruining her day by being a handsome idiot.” She manages to avoid interacting with him.
Again, they meet, and it just gets worse. He has been traded to Reid’s team, the Rebels, and Pepper’s father is the head coach. She works as a substitute mascot, which she likes because of the anonymity it offers. She doesn’t stay anonymous for long. Now, in addition to judging her, Bast is also angry with her and wants to punish her. He arranges things so that she will have no choice (ordered by her father) but to drive him to Reid and Kennedy’s (his wife) cabin several hours from the city to get away from the latest media storm.
Forced to spend time together in a secluded cabin where they are snowed in—Pepper imagines them living in a “snow globe world,” which is certain to be smashed—they learn things about one another that make them appreciate the other more. Bast learns that the rumors surrounding Pepper are far from true and pushes Pepper to set the record straight and write her own story. She needs to demand the respect she deserves, and that means confronting her father and her brother Connor, and when necessary, the media. She encourages him to be honest about his feelings, especially with Reid, rather than trying to cover everything with a happy face and a good attitude. Both need to address some serious issues in their lives and make some changes.
Pepper feels like she needs to do this herself, so she tells Bast she doesn’t want to continue anything with him until these other issues are resolved. She still hasn’t gotten over her feelings of guilt and inadequacy and doesn’t think he deserves to be saddled with someone like her. Both regret that agreement because they want nothing more than to be together—although they’re still not certain of each other’s feelings. They both quickly move to take care of what they’ve promised to do so the time spent apart is limited.
There’s no manufactured drama involving misunderstandings or people getting in the way of their budding relationship. They both immediately like one another, a lot, so there’s no denying their attraction. The obstacles are their own. They both make superficial judgments about the other without knowing all of the facts. They both wear masks to conceal who they really are.
Bast and Pepper create their own problems and they are the only ones who can untangle their emotions and be honest with the people they love. Both need to improve themselves before they can become a "they." And since we are always the biggest obstacles to our own happiness, this story should ring true for everyone. Only when we are willing to be honest about who we are, to ourselves, can we enter healthy relationships and thrive.
I wasn’t sure Kate Meader could write another book that I’d love as much as her last release but she proved me wrong, Superstar is every bit as good as Down In Flames which makes me a very happy reader. I loved everything about this book; the way this couple met and the issues that seemed to have them at odds, but most of all I loved the way these characters grew and changed throughout their journey.
I appreciate books with lots of layers and that describes this one perfectly. Both characters were dealing with some issues and had their defenses up yet there was also this underlying attraction between them something they both weren’t sure they wanted but couldn’t quite ignore. Bast was hurt in a game when his then team played his brother’s team and his wrist got broken during play between them; it was kind of a messed up situation but it also brought him and his big brother Reid closer together, but Bast will also admit it has sucked being off the ice. Finding out rest and PT wasn’t going to fix it and he’d need surgery wasn’t what he wanted to hear but he’d done it and despite being traded from the Hawks to his brother’s team the Rebels he was happy to be back on the ice. Then he was taken out by the Rebel’s mascot and finding out Pepper Calhoun, his coach’s daughter, his college friend’s sister, and the woman he had a run in at a bar months ago was in the costume, it was too much. He was angry; worried about his career but when the press goes after her and her father doesn’t defend her Bast does and makes quite the scene doing it.
All Pepper wants is to live a quiet life, to figure out what is next for her, and to live down and the media attention from her broken engagement to a hockey player who went off the rails following their break-up which had nothing to do with her and the current situation of taking out the Rebels new super star player again not her fault not that anyone would listen. So when her father practically demands she drive Bast to his brother’s cabin she does it, it’s a small price to pay for hurting his just healed wrist but getting snowed in with him wasn’t in her plans.
I loved that these two were kind of forced together especially since you could feel the tension between them and it wasn’t all “bad” tension if you get my drift. They had chemistry but it was easy to see they both genuinely cared about what was going on with the other. These were two good people who got caught up in bad circumstances and really didn’t know how to find their way out. I liked that they spent time getting to know one another in more ways than one and unburdening their past hurts to each other. Despite their somewhat rocky start they trusted one another on a level I don’t think either one of them had had with another person until they met which was truly interesting.
Always being the nice guy or nice girl made it hard for them to share how they were really feeling with people who they were close to, but together they figured out how to be brave, to confront those that made them feel bad and those they tried to shield from what they were really thinking and feeling. I loved how this author added this depth to both these characters, helped them see that by shielding others they were hurting themselves and they needed to rectify that behavior.
Kate Meader has a knack for writing characters you can’t help but root for both individually and together, books that have a full and rich plot, she also throws in some hot intimate moments, and most of all she gives those couples the chance to grow, change, and fall in love and I absolutely adore that about this author. Superstar is another winner from this author and I can’t wait to see what happens next in the Rebels’ world!

"But I don’t know your name, Cinderella." "And I don’t know yours, Prince Charming." I can always count on Kate Meader to give me a book that is sweet, has some steam, but, most importantly, has lovable characters you can relate to on some level. Even though I haven’t read Reid’s (Bastian’s brother) story yet, I absolutely loved him, so if you’re wondering if this can be read as a standalone, that’s a YES!
"I wished you were someone else. Just like you wished I was someone else." Bastian and Pepper meet at a bar. Weirdly enough (or maybe not really), they’re both trying to avoid being recognized for different reasons. And even weirder? There’s this attraction that really shouldn’t be there. But it all gets smashed to smithereens when they’re forced to reveal their identity.
"He hated that he wanted her. She wasn’t a fan either, but she sure as hell wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing he’d snuck under her skin." Bast is a hockey player, traded to another team, who has been recovering from an injury. Pepper is recovering from having had another hockey player in her life, with disastrous consequences to her reputation. So they’re all sorts of wrong for each other. Except life throws them together… I’m not going to say how, but it is pretty unique, to be fair.
"You want to talk about fairness? Your hips, your ass, your … lips. None of it is fair." Suffice to say they’re forced to hide out at his brother’s cabin. Is there only one bed? Yes. Is there only one hot tub? Hell, yes. And are they forced to face this thing between them that is practically living and breathing now? You guessed it.
"Not sure I can be gentle with you. Not sure I even know how to do gentle. Not when I want you so badly." These two together… damn. I love that they say with their bodies whatever they’re unable to say with words. Because for Bast, confidence doesn't come easy and everyone sees him as the goofball. And Pepper is really not used to someone putting her, her needs, or her wants first.
"Thank you," "For?" "For being the last guy who should have defended me, yet the first guy who did." So they teach each other. Pepper is made aware that she is not at all who she was made to believe and that she’s worthy and deserving of love and all the good things that have been denied her. She’s also deserving of a protector, and that is a role Bast’s more than willing to take up.
"I liked how you made me feel." "How was that?" "Like I was worth your time." When their time at the cabin is over, they still don’t know how to process their feelings. Mostly because they’re overthinking it and still wondering if there can be a "them". News flash—we, the readers, and the whole freaking Rebels team (and their WAGs) know they can.
"Past, present, and future. This is what I want." This was about growth for me. He was the first person to stand up for her. She was the first one who actually listened. And they empower each other to be the best version of themselves—the one where they end up together, obviously. I loved the heartwarming feeling they gave me.
This is my first Kate Meader book and I have no idea why I have waited so long to give Kate's books a try. I actually listened to the Audiobook and it was EXCELLENT,Narrated by Stephen Dexter and Emma Wilder who both mesmorised me with their story telling. Bringing both Bastian and Pepper to life with their amazing acting skills, they both delivered a talented, clear, smooth, emotional and captivating performance. I made a mistake though because this is book 7 in this series so I haven't had the pleasure to listen to the other 6 books before Super Star...Which I really regret as I am very strict on reading books in order and I broke the rules with this one. I really enjoyed this book Bastian and Pepper's story is a complicated one and doesn't start on a good note...They kind of really dislike eachother. Pepper has a bad reputation with the press and media, after splitting up with her hockey player ex boyfriend...She was blamed for destroying his career and everyone saw her as bad luck now. Bastian is coming back from injury and recently was traded to the Chicago Rebels and was making a big come back when he is derailed by the Chicago Rebels mascot....RE-Injuring his wrist and so never got to make his comeback.Bastian is furious especially when he finds out it is Pepper, the ruiner of hockey careers, who was behind the mascot costume...But even though he is angry he actualy ends up rescuing her from some eager journalists and even takes one down for her...Resulting in more bad headlines. Pepper is also the coaches daughter and her father is so mad with her he orders her to drive Bastian to a remote cabin in Michigan so he can recover away from negative press. But a snow storm hits them and so Pepper and Bastian are now stranded together until the storm passes. With a simmering attraction bubbling between them its only a matter of time were they give into temptation. I loved this story because as they get to know eachother they find out that they were wrong with their assumptions that they had of eachother. Bastian is not the grumpy asshole she thinks he is..instead he is attentive, kind tender, patient and has a heart of gold. Pepper is not the cheating cold hearted bad luck charm the press makes her out to be she is loyal, supportive, listens, generous loving and kind with a good heart. They slowly begin to fall for one another and it is both sexy and sweet and it was heart warming reading as these two become more than friends. I really liked Kate's writing style and her ability to draw you in to the story, and fall in love the characters she creates. This is a wonderful audiobook and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this story it entertained me from start to finish. Brilliant 5 Stars.
I loved Bastian (Bast) and Pepper’s love story in Superstar by Kate Meader, book seven in the Rookie Rebels series, was an emotional, intriguing, sexy, and enjoyable hockey romance. Warning: Mental health, bullying, and sports doping are discussed within the context of this story.
This magical tale features a relationship between Bastian Durand and Pepper Calhoun started with meet cute that went off the rails half-way through. Then these two had an unexpected collision on ice, with Pepper inside the Mascot outfit, re-injuring Bast’s wrist, Pepper being blamed for the crash, and the press going after her. Bast had already decided to hide away at his brother’s, Ryan’s, Michigan lakeside cottage and forces Pepper to drive them there. Upon arrival, they realized that the cottage had only one bed and they were snowed-in. Somewhere in there Bast felt a strong protective streak toward Pepper, wanting to protect her from everyone and everything. Pepper is quite likeable despite what she deems her cursed life. Then there’s the secret she’s been keeping about her ex. After what happened with the ex, the team management, and the WAGs in Denver, Pepper is not quite ready to trust and open-up to the women of the Rebel family; even if her father was the team coach. The banter, the attraction, and chemistry between these two are off the charts; just like the steam they created in the hot tub. On the surface, Bast is a happy guy, especially since he and his brother have healed their fractured relationship; but underneath it all, his emotions are swirling and simmering. He is in need of a bright light to keep him out of the darkness and Pepper slips in, managing to shower him in sunlight while remaining in the dark herself. He is her protector while not understanding his need to be that for her. It is amazing how they navigate their way to each other. Their story is sweet and spicy, full of fun and snark, and reality.
Ms. Meader wrote an emotional, amazing, burn the sheets, hockey romance that should not be missed. She provided a tale rich with emotions, sizzling chemistry, clever banter, and support giving Bast and Pepper a chance at love and a future together. The well-intentioned Rebels players and their significant others get to play supporting roles in the sweetest, sometimes cheesiest, but most loving of ways throughout this story. This book hit it on the head, showcasing two lonely people and their unexpectedly sizzling romance, the team bromances and all the many tangled friendships. I highly recommend Superstar to other readers, and I look forward to the next book in this series.

This series has carved out a little piece of my heart! I am so obsessed with these characters and this fictional hockey world.
I am such a fangirl for Kate Meader's writing. It ticks off all the boxes for me. Her writing style is relatable and fresh. This author just gets me. Her stories are crafted so expertly. The plots are always interesting and well-executed. The world-building pulls the reader in. It's like being entranced.
The character growth in this book is phenomenal! Pepper and Bast both show significant personal growth on so many fronts. These characters are so addicting! The entire cast of characters is carefully curated to produce a book series with major squad goals. Each character is distinct and full of depth.
I loved the natural progression of the romance. That initial meeting between Bast and Pepper was so pivotal. The reader could feel the significance of it. The banter was amazing and the connection that they formed was magnetic. I am a big fan of how Bast stepped up for Pepper even though he was angry about what happened. He was so honorable and protective of her and it melted my heart.
This story has a "snowed in" trope going on and I am usually not the biggest fan of stories that mostly take place in the same location or over a short period of time. It was noticeable in this book but the story was still strong. I think that this is just a personal preference regarding tropes. The fact that Meader was able to write a book about a trope that I don't care for and still makes me love it speaks volumes.
Overall, this book was a delight from beginning to end. I loved the emotional journey that these characters took. This is a series that you should definitely take a chance on if you enjoy hockey romance. The storytelling and craft are unparalleled in excellence. This author knows her stuff and you won't be disappointed. I am so excited for the next book!
Is it wrong of me to hope Kate Meader never runs out of stories to tell within the Chicago Rebels universe? I have fallen hard for these characters and love the way they weave in and out of one another's books, offering up friendship, support, and unwanted relationship advice (meddling hockey players - who knew?) If you're new to this series, Meader has written each book in such a way that you could begin at any point without feeling lost. But, if you're a fan (like I am) it's a special pleasure to see favorites pop up following the conclusion of their own book (I'm looking at you, Kershaw). I love tagging along as earlier couples live out their happily-ever-afters.
After meeting Bastian in his brother's book, Dear Roomie, I immediately wanted to know more about him and was beyond excited when Meader announced he would be getting a book of his own. Tack on a snowed-in-only-one-bed trope (yes, please!) and my excitement knew no bounds. I'm pleased to report that this one had all my happy reader vibes dancing.
Meader is a master at creating complex, well-developed characters and then weaving them into a fun, steamy story without sacrificing emotional depth. Strategically placed humor in this book keeps things on the light side while complicated relationships (family and romantic) and obstacles ground the story in reality. I adored Bast and Pepper. Their chemistry was off the charts but the quiet, talking times were just as significant. Both characters evolved individually over the course of the book, making their growth as a couple even more solid, relatable, and heartfelt. Yes, I cried during the epilogue. Yes, they were happy tears. Yes, I'm already counting the weeks until the next Rookie Rebel finds his own happily ever after.
The relationship between Bast and Pepper plays out entirely within Superstar and can be enjoyed on its own without having read the earlier books in the series. However, Bast's relationship with his brother, Reid is a significant part of his character arc in this book. Because of that, and to better understand the history and layers of their sibling relationship as well as the complicated family dynamic with their father, I would suggest reading Reid's story, Dear Roomie followed by Bast's story in Superstar. Or, just start with book one and read the entire series. Yes, they are all that good.
Superstar is the latest hockey romance from Kate Meader. If you love forced proximity, only one bed, and lots of banter, don’t miss this fantastic book.
Hockey star Bastian Durand is getting back on the ice after recovering from a wrist injury and changing teams. He’s ready for his first game playing for the Chicago Rebels, where his brother Reid is now his teammate. Pepper Calhoun is his coach’s daughter, who he briefly met months ago and can’t stop thinking about. Pepper is trying to reassess her life after a bad breakup and worse press. One of her current jobs is to fill in for the Rebels on ice mascot. But when she literally runs into Bast and he re-injures his wrist, she’s convinced she’s cursed. Naturally the accident leads to them escaping the city together and getting snowed in at Reid’s lakeside cabin with only one bed—makes perfect sense. Can they put aside their individual baggage and really get to know each other, or will they continue to fight their mutual attraction?
Kate Meader writes great characters who are far from perfect but are essentially good. Both Bast and Pepper are such genuinely nice people that the story could have fallen flat in a lesser author’s hands. But by showing the true feelings underneath Bast’s sunshine exterior and the destruction of Pepper’s self esteem gives the story depth. Pepper brings out a different side of Bast that people don’t usually see from the amiable player. And, the sizzling chemistry and terrific quips make their isolation the perfect romance location.
This book works as a stand alone, but for more insight into Bast’s relationship with his brother Reid, you’ll love Dear Roomie. The magic of romance is that Bast was actually first introduced long ago in Meader’s Hot in Chicago firefighter series; if a devoted reader waits long enough, all her favorite secondary characters eventually get their HEA.
Superstar is a fun, steamy hockey romance. If you like forced proximity stories with only one bed and surprise snow storms, Bast and Pepper are characters you want to spend time with. Not only are they incredibly likable, but their sizzling banter and chemistry is a treat.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Bast and Pepper's book has it all--friend's little sister/boss's daughter with a side helping of there's only one bed! In a snowstorm! And oh, yeah, our hero is felled by his fatal flaw...being easily distracted by bewbs. (Not the heroine's initially, sadly. But that will soon change ;))
Though Pepper and Bast have a bit of a rocky start--her reputation precedes her, and he's not in the greatest place mentally or physically when they first meet *or* when they next run into each other (pun intended!)--their chemistry is strong from the very beginning. Throw in the aforementioned snow, a lack of heat and that solitary place to sleep, and did I mention there's a hot tub??? plus, we already know how Bast can be distracted--and their coming together seems inevitable. But can their relationship survive the real world spotlight?
I loved this book! Though Bast was more than a little prickly at times, once you saw what was going on in his head it made a little more sense that he was. And he took ownership of his own mistakes by the end and did a decent job of making amends, so...redemption achievement unlocked ;) As always it was really fun to see all the other Rebels players (Kershaw's nickname-creating abilities are still on point, as always!), and it was especially awesome to see the Bast/Reid sibling dynamic from the other side after getting Reid's POV in Dear Roomie. For those new to the series, it should also work pretty well as a standalone--especially the first half which is mostly made up of road trip and snowed-in time--but anyone who can read a Kate Meader book and see all the series characters enjoying each other's company in that story and not need to read all the others is...well, I don't know what kind of person can do that. But I do know we're probably not ever going to be book besties, because...why??? ;)

It was a no-brainer that once the latest Rookie Rebels story hit my inbox, I was going to drop everything to read it. I am a huge fan of Kate Meader's hockey romances, and I was feeling positively greedy for Bastian Durand's story.
I was immediately charmed by Bast and Pepper's meet-cute. The chemistry sparked immediately and I was instantly on the hook, desperate to know Pepper's story, and hungry for more of the simmering tension that burned between them.
It did take a little turn for me as their story unfolded. I found myself confused about their push-pull for a little while. Bast - the nicest guy in hockey - was decidedly not nice to Pepper for a bit. And Pepper toed the line between being kind and being a doormat. I was maybe just as confused as they were by their feelings for each other in the early scenes. Their physical chemistry burned so hot, but it took a minute for the emotional piece to connect for me and so there was a bit in the middle that just missed the mark for me a little bit.
However, the pay off in the end was worth the little stall in the middle for me. The emotional connection did catch up, the puzzle pieces came together, and I loved the way Bast and Pepper rallied for each other, facing their own baggage while fiercely defending each other. It was sweet, sexy, and emotional and won me over completely in the end.
As always, the brotherhood between these men was the ultimate scene-stealer (and that lovable scamp Kershaw stole several scenes alone). I adored every interaction and the friendly teasing among the team. This is one of the greatest rewards for me, in sports romance, and Meader delivered in full.
Overall, it was a little bit uneven for me, but still a solid addition to this fabulous series. Flirty, fun, spicy and emotional - I really enjoyed Bast and Pepper's love story and, as always, cannot wait for the next one! ~ Shelly, 4 Stars
Kate Meader is a superstar of hockey romance. She is one of my favorite authors, regardless of the sub-genres and tropes she’s writing, because she is skilled at weaving heart-stealing stories. Case and point: Superstar, the seventh (interconnected standalone) book in the Rookie Rebels series.
Guys, I’m a total sucker for hockey romance, especially when the hero is a Good Guy. You know what I mean, right? Flirty and charming and happy-go-lucky. A golden retriever in human form. (Theo Kershaw, hero of Meader’s Instacrush, is very much one of these.) That’s what I expected from Bastian Durand, and surprisingly, not quite what I got.
I confess to being a wee bit taken aback; however, once I adjusted my expectations, I realized what I got was much better. A man with a strong streak of Good Guy in him, but also one who is coming to grips with life’s hiccups and setbacks. I ended up loving Bast despite a moment of doubt at his early a-hole-ish-ness, something to be credited to Meader’s ability to create three dimensional characters and to give them growth.
This is also evident in Pepper Calhoun, potential curse and eventual love-of-Bastian’s-life (LOL, spoiler?!). From start to finish, she went from a character I liked to one I was rooting for…hard. Because despite the occasional crisis of confidence and case of doormat-itis, she was loyal and kind and IDK, huggable. (Definitely felt like she needed a hug or two.)
And now that I’ve finished Superstar, I could use a hug or two because I’m kinda sad it’s over. At least the HEA between Bast and Pepper, the cameos of other Meader protagonists (especially Bast’s brother, Reid, and his dog, Bucky), and the overall humor, heat, and goodness of this book made this theft of my heart—and reading hangover—totally worthwhile.
This was an enjoyable light contemporary hockey romance! After a wrist injury, Bast goes to a bar to watch his team play incognito, where he runs into the beautiful Pepper. Pepper is also trying to avoid hockey players after a failed engagement where the press wrongfully pinned the downfall on her. These two have instant sparks, but when Bast realizes who Pepper is, his anger takes over instead. Now, both find themselves working for the Rebels team, and Bast wants to make things right. But Pepper inadvertently has a role in injuring his wrist again, causing havoc with everyone and the press. The two have to flee the press by running off to a cabin in Michigan, where the snow traps them, and these two face their growing feelings for the other.
This book was light on the angst but still delivered plenty of emotion, especially with the baggage both main characters brought. Bast has a complex relationship with teammate and brother, Reid. Meanwhile, the world has blamed Pepper for her ex's fall from grace even though the truth would decimate him. Her loyalty is admirable given the severity of the secret she has over the ex. She handles everything that comes at her with strength and more understanding than most people deserve. Bast is going through his own roller coaster and potentially facing life after hockey as well as built-up resentment from his childhood. Together, both use each other as sounding boards and form a believable emotional connection along with their physical one. I enjoyed this series and thought this book was a great addition to it.
I liked the idea of this book and have been a fan of the series, especially as the FMCs were all primarily strong characters, but this one fell flat for me. Pepper Calhoun just plain annoyed the fuck out of me. She kept apologizing to the men in her life, taking the blame for the crap that happened to them. Believing her father's and brother's comments that she was bad luck. Ugh.
She had a plan with her life, to finish her education and become a teacher, molding little ones' minds. All it took was her fiancee to make a bad decision, ruining his own career. She tried to stick it out with him but he chose to continue on thus destroying his life and her. His selfishness destroyed her own dreams when she left him, along with what little self esteem she had.
Bast, the star hockey player, and younger brother of Reid Durand, has constantly hidden behind a mask of the happy go lucky, peace maker. An injury to his wrist has put him out of commission for the season, and he's finally back on the ice.
Pepper has been avoiding the real world and everything to due with hockey, which isn't easy with a hockey coach father and a hockey player brother. Her BF convinces her to meet up for drinks in a hockey bar of all places, and while waiting for her friend to show up, she ends up meeting Bastian Durand and the two find themselves attracted but both omitting to say who they really are. Things go from bad to worse from there over the next several months.
As I said, this had a lot of potential and I was looking forward to this but I was disappointed in the FMC and her need to have Bast be a white knight saviour for her. Sigh...
