A World So Big is the kind of graphic novel that arrives quietly and stays with you long after the final page a bittersweet, luminous, and unexpectedly moving story about improvised family, social margins, and the enormous dignity of those the world tends to overlook.

At the heart of the story is Pëppo, a free spirited teenager living in an abandoned coastal campsite alongside a colourful cast of misfits and marginal figures, whose already chaotic life is turned upside down when his sister Frida disappears without warning, leaving him solely responsible for her two young twins. What follows is neither melodrama nor misery it is something far more surprising and far more affecting.

Séverine Vidal takes the opposite approach to sentimentality, delivering a story full of life and hope, positive despite its circumstances, where the encounters are beautiful and the emotions reveal themselves with subtlety. Vidal's great gift is her ability to find tenderness and humour in situations of genuine precarity without ever diminishing their weight. Pëppo's fumbling, determined, often hilarious attempts at caregiving are rendered with warmth and honesty, and the community that rallies around him eccentric, flawed, and fiercely loyal gives the book its beating heart.

Élodie Durand's artwork is luminous, colourful, simple and unadorned broad washes of colour illuminate the pages and bring the seaside setting to vivid, sun drenched life. Her visual language is perfectly matched to the story's tone: light enough to carry the humour, expressive enough to land the emotional punches when they come. The artwork brings lightness to the more serious subjects addressed, while the story is punctuated by an underlying tension around themes of rejection and abandonment running quietly through the narrative.

Adapted from Vidal's 2018 novel and selected for the prestigious Pépites BD at the Salon du livre de Montreuil, A World So Big is a reminder that the most generous and humane stories are often found in the smallest, most overlooked corners of the world.
Warm, funny, and quietly unforgettable.
