They said her father was dead, but Rennie Dennehy refused to believe that. Vowing to uncover the truth behind his strange disappearance, Rennie headed to the wilds of Colorado--and the only man who could help her. Bounty hunter Jarret Sullivan was a rogue with a smile as infuriating as it was irresistible. And though they shared a past she'd rather forget, seeing him again rekindled the flames of a desire she could not resist... and soon Rennie found herself surrendering to his wild sweet loving over and over again!
A WOMAN HE COULD NOT DENY
The last woman Jarret Sullivan ever expected to see again was Rennie Dennehy. A man might do a lot of things for ten thousand dollars, but tangling with a wild Irish beauty wasn't one of them! For months he'd been trying to forget her, but memories of the passion they'd once shared still haunted him. Now he had a second chance to take her in his arms and love her the way she was meant to be loved: with kisses of pure molten fire and caresses of burning passion. Jarret didn't plan on losing Rennie again. For this time he would not only make her captive to his touch, but captive to his heart!
To find characters to illustrate my first family saga, I cut out models from the Sears catalogue. I was in fourth grade, but it was a start. In seventh grade I wrote a melodrama about two orphan sisters, one of whom was pregnant. There was also a story about a runaway girl with the unlikely name of Strawberry and one about mistaken identities and an evil blind date. My supportive, but vaguely concerned parents, sighed with relief when I announced I was going to write children's books. They bought me an electric typewriter and crossed their fingers, but somehow PASSION'S BRIDE came out. No one was really surprised. I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry and some notion that I would do marine research. Years of competitive swimming didn't help me anticipate seasickness. A career change seemed in order. I began working with adolescents and families, first as a childcare worker and later, after graduating from West Virginia University with a master's degree in counseling, as a therapist. I am currently the executive director of a child caring/mental health agency and find my work and my writing often compliment each other. One grounds me in reality and the other offers a break from it.
The heroine of this book Mary Renee, is the most annoying Jo Goodman heroine I have read so far.
This is your spoiler alert.
Second book in the Dennehy sister series, Rennie, aka Mary Rene, played the part of a lonely woman whose strong characters brought her nothing but troubles. The first 30% of the book is the last 30% of the first book, but this time told from Rennie’s and Jarret’s points of view. Rennie met Jarret because Jarret was the deputy marshal to her brother in law. They had some kind of a chemistry which both of them fought to hide, and the first encounter ended with Jarret leaving New York with a lame gun arm, his dreams for ranching squashed and career as a bounty hunter ended.
The second part of the story started with Rennie showing up at Jarret’s door step, when he was getting out of his lady friend’s bed no less. No it didn’t bother me. What bothered me was how strong headed Rennie seemed through out the novel. Sometimes she even appeared to be a little self-pitying, believing that she was a mess of things and unattractive. Anyone who has read my reviews before would known that i am not much for a woman with low self esteem. Rennie wasn’t a whiny heroine, but she barged in and stormed out regularly in the story, pulling all kinds of stupid antics that made me really impatient. Suffice it to say that she wasn’t my kind of girl.
Rennie went to Jarret, hoping to hire him to go look for her missing father. Jarret, who could not be depended on to hold a gun, refused her flat out. It seemed like a forced play to me. I had the impression that Rennie was pursing Jarret, even though Jo Goodman didn’t write the story that way. I formed this impression of Rennie because she was so full of herself. You may call it determination and strong will. I call it too full of herself to know when to quit.
The journey to find her father naturally served as the vehicle for their relationship. The missing father was not dead. And Jarret and Rennie seemed to have a good thing going. Then Jo Goodman dropped a bomb: Rennie had married her fiancé before she came looking for Jarret and didn’t tell Jarret about it. Again, it didn’t bother me. Jo Goodman does things like this, and she usually manages quite well with such twists. I love that about her. Life isn’t all about parties and beautiful dresses. We do things we regret and at some point we must come to reconcile with them. It’s just i don’t like Rennie much and not much else could have saved the book for me.
But Jo Goodman is good for it. This happens often when I read her books. The love story is just so so but I cannot stop reading. I don’t know how she does it. I wanted to know what happened. The romance becomes secondary.
I suspect that I wouldn’t like most of the Dennehy sisters. They all seemed in a way spoiled and pigheaded, with the exception of the oldest sister. But I will continue with the series because Jo Goodman writes one hell of a mystery.
Rennie got on my nerves at first, but as the book went on I go so involved with the story that I couldn't put it down. I was up until 1:30 finishing it up.
I always associate Ms. Goodman's books with swoon-worthy, nice, and kind heroes (essentially my ideal book-boyfriend). I was surprised that the heroes in this book and the previous book in this series are kind of assholes. They like to manhandle the heroines physically, and there are a couple of scenes where the heroes are cruel toward the heroines. These books have bodice-ripper elements, so if bodice-ripper isn't your thing, you might want to stay away from this series (I guess her books written in the 90s and earlier are the ones with cruel heroes, I don't see this type of heroes in her latter works).
TW: an almost rape scene between the heroine, Rennie and 2 villains. It's graphic, and I was also a tad uncomfortable with it.
I had a hard time warming up to Rennie. I liked her twin, Michael, better from the 1st book. Rennie is just so reckless, impulsive, and too feisty by half. Her actions in the book's first half bordered on TSTL, and she is constantly weepy in the second half. I loved a strong heroine, but she grates on my nerves.
Jarrett is cut from the same cloth as Ethan Stone, the hero in the 1st book. Questionable conduct aside, they fall hard when they realize they love the heroine.
It does seem to be a running theme in the books in the series where when the MCs separate, the MMC has no intention of pursuing the FMC again.
I am committed to finishing up the series. This book isn't without flaws, but it is highly entertaining. Ms. Goodman is such an impressive author. It is interesting to see her growth as an author in each subsequent book.
99 cent sale on the series led me to pick this (and several more books in the series) up as ebooks. But this one was a real bust. Old Skool sexual dynamics and an impulsive (i.e., TSTL) female protagonist make this even more annoying than the first book in the series.
The first third of book #2 tells the same story as the last third of book #1, albeit from the POV of a different Dennehy sister (Mary Renee, twin to book #1's Mary Michael). Since Michael is being stalked by an escaped convict, and Renee might be mistaken for her because they are identical twins, she's placed under the protection of Jarret Sullivan, former bounty hunter and the man responsible for breaking up her impending wedding. Rennie chafes at being confined at home, and does everything she can to try and escape (for what purpose, besides spite/annoyance, isn't really clear). Jarret is always one step ahead of her, foiling her at every turn and proving his superiority.
Once the danger to Michael is over, Rennie and Jarret part, Jarret annoyed at his physical attraction to the annoying Rennie. The story takes up again several months later in Colorado, when Rennie seeks out Jarret to help her find her missing father. But since they parted, Jarret and he's spent the intervening months trying to fuck and drink away his bad feelings, and he's become a surly bastard. He initially refuses Rennie's offer, but after she gets herself into trouble trying to find her father without him, he has to follow and rescue her . And then, even worse, . Somehow the two end up romantically entangled despite all the ugly, angry feelings, but Goodman has yet another big secret up her sleeve to break the two apart once again before story's end.
Yuck, yuck, yuck. And since the book was republished under a new title (former title: Rogue's Mistress; current title: My Heart's Desire) and has a copyright date of 2014, I'm guessing that the original book (from 1993) was even worse on the gender front...
Copyright 1991. My copy is from that date. This book was published under a different title in 2014 - "My Heart's Desire" so be careful - you may already have read it. 2nd in the series & I don't believe it to be a stand alone. The 5 Dennehy sisters all have the first name of Mary. This is Mary Renee's (Rennie's) story. She's one of the twins & her twin's (Mary Michael's) story was book one.
I've only read this book twice. When I first bought it & now. It's not a favorite read. The first 5 chapters were a struggle to get through & that was because of Rennie. She completely turned me off with her inexplicable actions, & her TSTL moments. She's one of those heroines who knows it all & is going to do dumb things because of it. The first 5 chapters we find out what happens in New York City with the villains in the last story. They're out for revenge & although they're finally captured - Jarret is wounded. At the train station he's jumped by Rennie's fiance's friends & his arm wound turns into nerve damage. He's unable to hold a gun. His career as a US Marshall is over. He goes back to Colorado to sulk. Rennie marries the fiance (whom no one likes) because she's TSTL.
Rennie comes to find him months later when her father disappears in Colorado. There's lots of angst between them & an attempted rape that's graphically told. Jarret of course saves her, but if rape is your trigger - avoid this book!
So, I warmed up to Rennie sufficiently enough to finish the book, but by the end I was too aggravated with both of them to give it more than 2 stars. JG is a talented author & this is the lowest star rating I've given for any of her books.
A new character - Dancer is introduced & he's an integral part of the next book, which is Maggie's story. My cover is a typical bodice ripper with inappropriately dressed H/h with a snowy mountain landscape. There's also a white horse. The contemporary cover is more subdued.
Rennie Dennehy met Jarret Sullivan when he was in New York City hunting down a killer. Jarret's job was to keep Rennie away from the killer's target and out of trouble. Easier said than done. The two clashed at every turn, especially when Jarret was responsible for stopping her wedding to Hollis Banks.
Now, a year later, Rennie's father is missing and presumed dead. Refusing to believe it, she heads to Colorado to find him. She tracks down Jarret to help with the search. Right away the two strike sparks off of each other.
This is the second book in the Dennehy sister's series. The first third of the book starts out in NYC and rehashes some of the scenes from the first book, but from a different point of view. Rennie was a little hard for me to take, always jumping into the thick of things without thinking it through. I finally started liking her in the middle of the book. The last section of the story had some real twists that I didn't see coming. I was very surprised by a couple of them. My rating: 4 Stars.
I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for my honest review.
I love Jarret! He may start out as seeming like a jerk, but HOLY COW! By the end of the book, you realize just how amazing he is. However, Rennie I did not like for quite a bit of the book. It was hard to read through everything with her for a good portion of the book. It was her attitude and stubbornness. I think Jarret was a saint for dealing with her because if I were him, I would've ran away so fast. By the end of the book I came around to her, but I think thats mostly because she learned and started to grow up because it certainly took a long time for me like her. This book could have gone a number of ways while reading in the beginning, but I loved that the book kept surprising me. I would definitely recommend this book because I had a hard time putting it down.
Rennie Dennehy's father was said to be dead but she refuses to believe the rumors. With that she takes out on her own in search of Jarrett Sullivan, the one person she knows might just be able to help her find him.
I really liked the first part of this book but then when the main characters separate and come back together it is just not the same. I did not like how Jarrett treated Rennie and his whatever attitude to her feelings.
It was a strange book. The story was quite good about the search for the father of the 5 sisters but there was a weird chemistry between the lead pair. He started of nice and then turned to be quite a nasty guy when his shoulder got hurt. Too many explicit sex scenes in the second half. There was no tenderness which has usually been a trademark of Jo Goodman.
-4 stars. alternative title "rogues mistress". -spends five chapters telling the first part of the story which happens at the same time as the first book in the series. then time passes and the main story starts at chapter 6. - i like that even though Rennie is inept at cooking, she IS very adept at engineering, which is shown when they arrive at the train wreck.
"you don't really want to be my pleasure. you want me to make my business teaching you about it. i thought i might like that, but now i don't think so. if i gentle a filly, it's because i mean to ride her. i'm not breaking you in for Hollis Banks."
"you've changed. it doesn't take whiskey to ruin your vision. you're so full of hate and anger and sheer cussed meanness that you can't see straight even when you're sober."
"swearing sometimes helped." [yes. yes it does.]
"you're tenacious. do you know that?" "that's what everyone says. Jay Mac says Michael is determined, but i'm tenacious. she knows when to let a thing go and take the route around, but i have a tendency to bite down and hang on."
he gave her a small shake. "you're wrong. that's just not true." "it doesn't help me hear better." "what? what are you talking about?" "you're shaking me. it doesn't help me hear any better."
"i know just how to touch you to wake you up." he anticipated her fingers fiddling with the drawstring of his drawers, dipping just below the waist... which was why he nearly came out of his skin when Rennie thrust her icy feet under his legs.
"i recall they were the longest seconds of my life. i just don't remember what happened in them."
The story of the five Marys continued in this tale, starring Rennie--Mary Renee Worth--and Jarret Sullivan, Ethan's friend from book 1.
This book continued the series well, though the beginning of it repeated some of the chapters from the end of book 1, only from Jarret's and Rennie's POVs.
After Jarret stopped Rennie's marriage in book 1, she seeks him out again in book 2 for help. Her father has gone missing suspiciously, and she suspects some of the people in his railroad office are responsible. She seeks out the man who once entered her life before.
But he is changed now. After suffering a debilitating injury from Rennie's fiance, Jarret is now ferociously bitter. Still, Rennie has always been a draw for him, so he grouchily agrees to help her.
The story takes off from there with Goodman's characteristic blend of romance and blindsiding revelations. Even when I know to watch for them, she still catches me off guard.
A good story overall. First book is still my favorite, though.
Several months after Jarret Sullivan interrupted her wedding, Rennie Dennehy needs his help to find her missing father. She doesn't realize that her fiance had him beaten so badly that his shoulder is damaged, hindering the use of his right hand. It's a great story and a good romance. I could see their pairing since the last book, and Rennie and Jarret make for a fiery but perfect pairing. I loved how she wanted to work in her father's business as an engineer and she proved her worth to him. The side characters are either fun or evil as needed. I didn't like how the first part of the book was just a repetition of scenes from the first book. I guess it's necessary for readers who didn't read the first book in the series, but it went on in too much detail for me. Still, I like the Dennehy sisters and Ms. Goodman has put together a good story.
The second in the series about the Dennehy sisters, this time it is Rennie's turn. It begins where the first one left off. Jarrett is protecting an extremely reluctant Rennie, who is giving him a hard time. It jumps several months and picks up again when Rennie needs Jarrett's help, only for reasons I will not mention, he is definitely the reluctant one now.
It is the dialogue I particularly like in No Goldman's stories. It is never forced or unnatural, flowing easily and sitting along.
Jo Goodman books never quite go in the direction that you think they are going to go. Changes in location, shifts in time, the odd plot twist that has the characters in knots. But what stays with you is the love, and the struggle to get things right between h/H with different life experiences and perspectives. Just the sort of book that tempts readers to keep them in bed on a cold Sunday morning not willing to stir until Rennie and Jarret got their HEA; I gave in to temptation.
As with most books by this author, the couple meets in a rather awkward or unusual situation and appear not to like each other very much. Over time their annoyance with each other changes to passion and hot bedroom scenes. Then the plots tend to lag some before picking up speed for an exciting ending. This book showcasing Jarret and Rennie’s love affair follows that pattern with some added unexpected thrills and a few twists and turns. 4.25 Stars
Sometimes this story was so exciting and mysterious that it froze the blood in my veins and sometimes it bored me as much, this boring part was from the beginning of the book to almost half of it, that told the repeated events of the story of the previous book of this series. Because of this reason, I even once decided to give it up and to stop reading it, but almost from the middle of the book, the story became so exciting that I couldn't stop reading it even for sleeping 😁🥱.
Goodman has written well thought out plots with thrilling events in her stories. This is another one where two people meets up to solve the missing father, plots in taken over her father's company the northeast railroad. Very good story.
I did not like Jarrett for the first half of the novel. Jarret was a grumpy brute. However, the story was sooooo amazing! There were so many twists and turns! I found surprises and felt satisfied with how it all turned out!
Hey fellow readers I don’t summarize the books (as there are always great full summaries written that I read myself).
I only give it my personal, general, summary of 5 stars to 1 star.
3 stars: This book is worth a read but didn’t really have me excited about interacting with the book where I could not put it down. It lacks the excitement and well roundness of my personal markers for a great read throughout the book.
Development and interest in main characters, secondary characters, humorous, movement of the book, writing/conversation and romantic/sexual content (1-2 scenes or too much unnecessary).
Read it once and that is enough for me.
However, if this book is part of a series, I would read the next book (pervious book) in the series as it would still peek my reading interest.
I’ll continue reading from this author. I wouldn’t cross the author out of my potential reads in the future.
One of the most pleasant surprises was the fact that Rennie and her twin were gifted in different spheres. Michael Dennehy (known as ‘Michael’) was a reporter at the New York Chronicle; her story is told in MORE THAN A TOUCH (alternate title: WILD SWEET ECSTASY). Rennie is a construction engineer for the railroads. Both women experience prejudice against their gender in the workplace.
The story opens with everyone getting ready for Rennie’s wedding to one of her co-workers, vice president Hollis Banks. Although not a love match, Rennie is practical and sees this as a way to be accepted as a contributing member of the staff and to exert more control in the company.
Rennie’s father, Jay Mac offers $10,000 to stop the wedding. Jerret Sullivan takes him up on the offer. At the same time, 2 miscreants from MORE THAN A TOUCH (alternate title: WILD SWEET ECSTASY) are trying to kill Michael. Since Rennie is an identical twin, she is in as much danger as her sister. Jerret Sullivan is hired to protect Rennie.
Although Rennie wasn’t thrilled to marry Hollis (and each member of her family was against it), she pitched a fit when Jerret interfered. Both Rennie and Jerret are very likable characters, as are all of the members of this extensive family. It’s a joy to watch them interact.
The enormously wealthy Jay Mac has had all five of the Dennehy sisters out-of-wedlock. He has not been stigmatized by this – but his mistress (of 25 years) and her daughters have been ostracized from polite society. Jay Mac becomes a major part of the second half of this book; he is quite a dynamic character!
Everything about this story was wonderful; the character development, pacing of the story and plot lines were entertaining. A joy to read!
Dennehy Sisters 1. Wild Sweet Ecstasy (1992) aka More Than a Touch 2. Rogue's Mistress (1993) 3. Forever in My Heart (1994) 4. Always in My Dreams (1995) 5. Only in My Arms (1999)
The 2nd in the series and I loved it. Rennie is an identical twin to Mary Michael and when Ethan comes to town to protect her he brings his best friend Jarret as his deputy Marshall. Jarret is asked to protect Rennie in case Dee & Houston come after her. Jarret and Rennie are held up in the house for her protection for several weeks when they find out the Michael has gone into labor and Houston is found dead in her hotel room. While Rennie is there for her sister Jarret goes after Dee, she attacks him and damages his shoulder and gun arm. When Jarret decides to leave he is attacked by Rennies Fiancé friends and his gun arm is damaged permanently. Months later Rennie tracks him down to help her find Jay Mac, whom everyone except her believes is dead. You have mystery, battle of wills, discovery, love, deception, intrigue all wrapped up in a great book by Jo Goodman. A great 2nd book to the series!!!
Interesting story – Two men arrive in New York to protect a woman from escaped convicts. Ethan is already in love with Mary Michael, one of five sisters (first book), and the sister has a twin. The second man, Jarrett, seems to be a man only interested in money and when he sees an opportunity to make some does so by doing Mary Renee’s father’s bidding by preventing her marriage to Hollis.
From that point on things happen. There are fights, injuries, train wrecks, marriages, evil men, murder, work to be done and quite a bit of romance. Jarrett and Renee do not have an easy relationship and strike sparks most of the time – if one is not cantankerous the other probably will be. This has plenty of steam, interesting characters, time in the city and on the trail, a villain to uncover and a plot that twists and turns and a HEA ending.
I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for my honest review.
Jay Mac was rich and powerful, married, and had a mistress, by whom he had 5 independent daughters, all named Maria something. He was the founder of a now enormous railroad empire. Maria Michael and Maria Renee were identical twins, and the oldest of the 5 girls. Adventures, love, kidnapping, train wrecks and murder plots abound, with a wedding called off and another wedding held on the spur of the moment. They travel from Manhattan to Colorado to St. Louis back to New York, and so on. Can the girls depend on the love of their chosen partners? Can their men trust the girls? Who planned the rail disaster, and who profited from it? Can Rennie and Jarrett find the answers and save Jay Ray's and his daughters' lives? It's a chair's-edge historical romance that you won't be able to put down.
I usually really like Jo's characterizations. Unfortunately, in this book, I liked a lot of the secondary characters, but no the main pairing. The hero was too bullheaded and used brute force to keep the love interest, Rennie safe on a couple of occasions. It frustrated me to the point where I was really rooting for her to get away from him for a while, just to prove that she could do something on her own. There was some clever plotting, but I felt that we got too much of the main characters and missed several key scenes with other characters that were referenced rather than shown.
