Synopsis: Kate is a talented artist with two young children, Natasha & Jake. Her husband, Ben, is a school teacher and struggling playwright. He is constantly dreaming of his one successful London run and cannot produce an equally good follow up.

Kate isn't suite to domesticity so she and Ben take on an au pair, Simone, to helpwith the children so Kate can spend her days painting. However, the plan misfires for Simone isn't very experienced with Children. In order to cope with the additional frustrations, Kate conjures of a friendly gorilla, who remains invisible to the rest of the world. Queen Kong is an extraordinary invention, an Alter Egorilla who sustains Kate throughout her day and helps her to face her mahy problems whether domestic or artistic.

My Secret Gorilla is an outstanding first novel. Its theme is topical and its treatment of it is delightful. As with all the best comic entertainment, tears are never far from the surface.
