After an accidental nuclear explosion off the coast of California, Philip searches for his family through a heavily militarized and devastated Los Angeles.
With a relentless concern about contemporary issues and problems that affect teenagers, Gloria D. Miklowitz (USA, b. 1927) examined such topics as rape, suicide, teen marriage, divorce, AIDS, sexual abuse, and racial prejudice in her novels. She helped teen readers look at underground militias, vigilantism, religious cults, steroid use among high school athletes, and the effects of nuclear war. She enabled readers to view the famous battle of Masada from both sides. She also wrote nonfiction on a variety of subjects, from earthquakes and raccoons to President Harry Truman, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and tennis star Tracy Austin.
Good book but AUGH! Is there more?! Philip continues to be awesome, stubborn and brave as he goes out of his way to unite his family after an accidental nuclear strike from Russia. People try to tell him to stop being so stubborn, but without his bullheadedness, who knows what would have happened?

This book is about what would happen after a nuclear bomb goes off in LA. A boy named Phillip and his brother Max and friend Cara must survive the barren landscape that was LA only 50 hours ago. After sending their mother off to one of the few hospitals to be treated for radiation, they set off to find their father. He had gotten separated from them in the explosion. As they go off on their journey they must over come all obstacles in their path. The main external conflict in this book is obviously Phil vs. the bomb. All of Phil's problems are caused by the bomb. If the bomb did not go off then their mother would not be sick and they would not need to find their father. The main internal conflict in this book is Phil vs. guilt. Phil feels guilty for letting their father leave to get help when the bomb went off. Phil thinks that if he had went in his father's place, then his father would not be missing. Phil blames himself for their father being missing and possibly being dead. I would rate this book three stars because it was a good book. But it was not the best. When i picked this book up I thought it would be like the apocalypse story which are really cool. But when I read this book it was more about family and less sci-fi. I would recommend this book to any one who likes kind of sappy family books with a sci-fi twist.

A good follow up to the first book. It was nice up find out what happened to certain characters. The author got her point across without preaching. She did her research and it shows. Believably done.
This book was written in 1987 and picks up the minute after book one finishes. To me there were still unanswered questions when this book ended. Maybe she planned for another book and no one cared.
This book is a sequel. If you enjoyed the first one, you'll want to keep reading to find out what happens. True, the book raises more questions than it answers but it's still accessible to younger readers without becoming too complex.
This is certainly dated! When I was a teenager, it was expected that something like this would happen, it was only a matter of whether it would be this year or the next. No wonder we all grew up to be so neurotic.[return][return]This was a good book and I wonder how it would be recieved today with the world being how it is today.
