In 1993, at the age of 80, Brian Johnston embarked on his first ever concert tour, a one-man show called An Evening With Johnners, which blended stories about his life with the many jokes and puns for which he was renowned. Two recordings were made from it - An Evening With Johnners and An Hour With Johnners.
This book combines material from both in which Johnston recalls his life, from his college days, to his war service, to his work for the BBC. Brian Johnston will be remembered as "the voice of cricket".
I have had the privilege of seeing Henry Blofeld on stage, and he was wonderfully entertaining. But it’s the delivery and Henry’s engagement with the audience that made it what it was, not the jokes or the anecdotes which were, in themselves, really rather weak. And so I think it is with Brian Johnston. I have no doubt that he equalled his old colleague on the stage, but reduce it to a script and you have lost the cheeky schoolboy delivery and all that remains is a succession of feeble gags. Johnners was a great man and a superb broadcaster, but this book does him no favours.
