Owls: The Majestic Hunters

Rate this book
Delve into the lives of owls with this collection of photographs and information by award-winning author and wildlife photographer Stan Tekiela.

They are silent and beautiful. They symbolize knowledge and mystery. Owls are among the most popular and beloved animals in the world. Yet most are nocturnal, so an owl sighting is a remarkable event, one worthy of remembering and sharing with others. Award-winning author, naturalist, and wildlife photographer Stan Tekiela believes that owls are intriguing birds. He spent more than 20 years traveling across the country to observe and photograph the various species, from the Great Horned Owl to the extremely uncommon Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. He documented every aspect of the owl’s major events such as courtship and mating, as well as everyday activities like hunting and sleeping.

The result is a striking portrayal of these amazing raptors in Owls. Stan’s extraordinary photographs depict the birds of prey in a new, unique fashion. His fascinating text is drawn from detailed research and personal observations. Presented with headings and short paragraphs, the coffee-table book is pleasurable to browse and easy to read.

“They are strikingly beautiful creatures and incredible hunters,” says Stan. “Owls are among my favorite birds to study and to photograph.”

Unmatched by any other book on the market, Owls is a must-have for bird watchers, wildlife enthusiasts, and nature lovers.

***Does include some graphic information such as what a cloacal kiss is....***

When I noticed that this book was meant to be a collective bird group instead of just individual
species focus I was a bit worried that it couldn't be pulled off and that one or another owl would be basically ignored. Although not too in-depth on any one particular species, the author did cut the owls down to North American species while touching basics on the size group in total.

As a result the reader will find that the book is set up to have a spread for each entry or partial entry. This spread includes a brightly colored photograph showcasing any of the 19 owl species in the United States with a few of the photos relating to the entry. The next page is dedicated to an information set that has a title of the focal subject in bold while followed by a paragraph, two or three providing the reader with more information. And where the information may differ such as the diet between owl sizes the author points these out while listing some of the species that would fit that particular group.

The text itself is written in very simple to read and understand writing so that the book can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages although as mentioned previously there is some information parents may want to be aware about before having their child exposed to it.

Otherwise for those who like owls, birds or animals in general this will be a nice quick read for you that is also quite informative. And I would most definitely would recommend this book for a science library.

It's hard to find good animal books for adults. The ones written for my age bracket are often too complicated, with lots of scientific data, and not a lot of pictures. The children's books have excellent pictures, but the writing is a bit simpler than I'd like. But, this...this was perfect. Each page had a collection of interesting facts about owls and I walked away feeling like I really learned something. But, even better, there were beautiful illustrations on every page, gorgeous owls with striking features and such expressive faces! I had a great time with this one, especially just enjoying the gorgeous photography.

This book is really interesting and has some amazing pictures, such as an owl hacking up a pellet! We have enjoyed hosting families of Eastern screech owls in our back yard, so it was fun for me to see so many photos of these little owls in this book and to read about their habits. But one of the most incredible parts of the book is the author bio at the end. In addition to writing a syndicated nature column, Stan Tekiela did all the writing and photography for Owls: The Majestic Hunters and has published more than 190 other books!

Knowing nothing about owls before reading this book I found it interesting and informative. Very basic in nature. A good read.
