Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz's fan-favorite AMAZING SPIDER-MAN run continues! As a creative team, they were cooking and making it look easy - and these classic stories will show you how it's done. First, make that new costume an alien that wants to take over your life! Then, add in the introduction of the mercenary Silver Sable, a little bit of Kingpin, and some conflict between Peter and Aunt May! Next, send a former herald of Galactus on a mission to pound Peter Parker into pulp. It's a fight that defines the never-say-die attitude that makes Spidey a hero for the ages! Voila - Marvel Masterworks one and all! Also featuring the Amazing Spider-Kid, Frog-Man and the Toad, and a host of bonus material! Collecting AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) #263-270, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL (1964) #19 and WEB OF SPIDER-MAN (1985) #1 and #6.
Tough to rate this one since I took a long break in between issues and pretty much forgot what even happened in the first half, but I vaguely remember that I found the run pretty decent. And the later half I read just recently was pretty good too. I'll probably take more notes when reading the next Masterworks collections to keep track of how I feel about the individual stories.
Surprised there are so few reviews, though. Are people rating different compilations or is this simply a run that's largely ignored?
Edit: Ah, I just realized why. This came out in late 2023, so people didn't have tons of time to buy this collection in particular. 27 is not even out yet, so not sure how I'm gonna review the upcoming runs without rating individual issues, which is something I really don't want to do, lol.
This volume seems to be a transitional series of tales, with an emphasis on somewhat slapstick humor at the expense of storytelling. The stories don't really progress, they sort of unfold. Some are quite amusing, others are just silly (Spider-Kid! Smythe Junior!). There are many better volumes. This one is notable for containing some of Peter David's earliest works, though. The artwork is mostly pleasant, though.
This is peak Spider-Man to me, there’s nothing better than this.
There’s just so much right, the action, the character, the humor, the stories, the pacing, the art, it’s all sequentially done so solidly that I have no specific notes. I just enjoyed the heck out of this.
