Mercy Alexander doesn’t believe in love, let alone love at first sight.
There’s one sure fire way of steering clear of heartbreak, and that’s not to get your heart involved in the first place. So what is that irritating flutter she feels every time she sees Brooks Hudson, and why is she finding him so hard to ignore?
Brooks Hudson can’t understand where he’s going wrong.
Doting single father to six-year-old Ali, supportive co-parent with his ex, much-loved friend and respected colleague, not to mention he’s smoking hot. So why is he constantly being dumped, told in no uncertain terms he’s ‘too nice’? Since when was being nice a crime?
Mercy is in serious need of someone to restore her faith in men, and Brooks needs a girl he likes to stick around long enough for him to believe in love again. But when Mercy’s past threatens to remind her of everything she’s scared of, will love be enough to save the day?

I don't think technically part of a named series, but I suggest reading He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not first because those characters play a role in this installment.
Brooks & Mercy Well it seems like I have another single dad that I love. Brooks was so adorable with 6 year old, Alijah. There's just something about fathers and daughters that gets me in the feels.
Mercy was such a fun character despite her traumatic past. Always honest and is just out with whatever comes to her mind. I'm not always fun to be around, but I'm surely honest and sometimes speak before I think so I can relate to her.
Having already whomped it up a few years prior they do know each other intimately, but this time around Brooks is the one that wants to take it slow with the '3 date rule' ~ how refreshing is that? And it's not like they had their dates in quick succession either, they went days and days and maybe a week once without seeing each other like there was no rush and they had the rest of their lives for fate to do its thing.
I love how the author collided their worlds in 2 different ways, plus we have Brooks' interesting ex wife that brings a little pizzazz to their story. All side characters were pretty great, except the one who is not supposed to be and boy was he a doozie.
Overall, I had a fun and delightful time reading this.
*Thanks to Aimee Brown, Boldwood Books, Rachel's Random Resources and NetGalley for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
While they’re not listed as a series, this definitely goes with the last book I read by this author, He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not. Mercy is best friends with Hollyn from that book. This book had some of the best banter, some funny situations, great characters, but also some really deep, emotional background stories.
First of all Brooks was really the perfect guy. It was crazy to think that any woman had dumped him, because he really just was exactly what I think I’d want in a guy. I mean tattoos, single dad, really just a great guy in every way. His relationship with his ex-wife was really fun too. Her premonitions and when she just happened to show up at the restaurant Mercy and Brooks had their first date at added a lot of fun to the story. We didn’t spend a ton of time with him and his daughter together, but it was still sweet when we got the chance.
Mercy had a lot of great friends and found family. Her big brother and his husband were the best family. Her best friend’s mother kind of adopting her as well, what a fun mom. And then there was Hollyn’s brother River, who was her roommate, he was great too. It sounds like his story will be next. Now Mercy had a really tough back story. And once we found out what Brooks did, I had a feeling there was going to be a connection. I really like the way the author handled that too. Nothing done that would just create drama. Everyone handled any “reveals” like I feel real people would do.
A sweet, fun read, and like with the last book, I’m looking forward to more by this author in the future!
Woah I absolutely loved he loves me he loves me not but love notes has left me reeling.
Mercy is amazing! She is raw and real and her story is just so authentic and messy. I didn’t think you could beat Hollyn and Daxs story but I think this one is my favourite. Although I am now very excited to see how River does he’s still one of my favourite characters.
Hudson Brooks is the last person Mercy Alexander would usually date but she literally doesn’t know what is happening when she starts to get feelings for him. Mercy doesn’t do dating or feelings or love.
This is such a lovely heart warming story and really builds on the relationships established in the first book. That being said you could still read this as a stand alone book in its own right but it’s so much lovelier reading after the first.
I absolutely adored the characters in this story. Mercy gets the ending she truly deserves!

I loved He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not so I had high expectations for this one - and it did NOT disappoint!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🧼 (closed door)
Mercy doesn’t believe in love. With a history of abandonment, past trauma and family issues, she doesn’t expect anyone to show up for her or stick around. Brooks is constantly being dumped, and doesn’t quite know why. He’s too old - at 36? He’s a divorced dad? He’s got tattoos? All he needs is to find the right woman.
Brooks & Mercy once had a fling, years ago, and their paths cross again at the exact right moment. They somehow keep running into each other, and can’t stop thinking about one another. Does meant to be actually exist?
I loved reading how both main characters helped each other & developed throughout the story. Mercy needed support, and a way to heal from her past. Brooks needed the right woman who wasn’t afraid of everything he has to offer. This story goes deeper than a romance, with Mercy’s past playing a big role in both their lives.
Read if you enjoy: ⭐️ Single Dad (divorced) ⭐️ Insta-connection ⭐️ Second chance ⭐️ Soulmates ⭐️ Traumatic past ⭐️ Man in uniform (police officer) ⭐️ Musicians ⭐️ Found Family ⭐️ Dual POV/first person
While this book does come after He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, it can definitely be read as a standalone - though I highly recommend reading it cause it’s so good!
*Check triggers if you have any, there are some heavy topics.
Thank you to NetGalley & Boldwood Books for an advance copy for review. All opinions are my own.
This was a very heart warming novel. For some reason I was expecting a rom com and I wasn't expecting the depth that the story offered and I was pleasantly surprised. "Love Notes" is the first novel I have read by Aimee Brown. Right away the story flowed, the pacing was just right and it was easy to read. The characters were likeable and human and complimented each other well. I love that Brooks ex wife got involved in a positive way which doesn't happen often. It's always the evil ex wife. This was a beautiful quirky modern family once all the pieces came together and I could picture both Brooks and Mercy's families being the ultimate support systems. This book was full of hope and healing and I enjoyed it very much. The message for me was family are the people we choose and even the most broken people deserve to love and be loved.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Boldwood books for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest and unbiased comments.
'Love Notes' is about Mercy who struggles a lot due to childhood trauma. But there is also Brooks, who is a single father and just trying to find his happy ending.
Look, this story is amazing, but I just needed a little more spice. The tension between the main characters was so intense and there was no scene to show that. Their soft and slow growing romance is adorable, but I felt like it needed a little more. Mercy is a very down to earth character who I absolutely adore. She's raw, realistic and her growth is simply great. She is an amazing character and has a lot of depth. Brooks is, for once, the nice guy who gets it all. Their was nothing toxic about him and somehow he even has manners. Which I didn't expect in the first place. I was waiting for some bad boy to enter the scene, but it was way better than the typical bad boy. He's a lovely guy but in a realistic way. The author didn't went overboard. Also, there are so many little details. From trauma to a drag queen brother and more. Every detail is well thought of and I, as a reader, appreciate that.
'Love Notes' is about Mercy and Brooks. Mercy is someone struggling a lot due to her childhood trauma (and it’s a lot). Brooks is a single father and women keep dumping him.
The story is amazing, but not what I expected. It’s not a rom-com. It’s heavy, but wonderful. Mercy is a beautiful character and I loved her growth. Brooks is the perfect nice guy and couldn’t be more perfect, but he also feels real. I also adored all the secondary characters. Even Brooks’ ex-wife is amazing. The romance is realistic, not toxic and it just makes sense. You can feel their chemistry in every word. There’s no spice, but tbh I didn’t need it. Their relationship was enough. And they talk. Miscommunication? We don’t know her. The only thing missing, in my opinion, was more Ali. I wanted more moments with Brooks’ daughter, I wanted to see her relationship with Mercy and more scenes with the three of them.
Thank you Netgalley, Boldwood Books and Aimee Brown for giving this ARC in exchange for my review!
This was a delightful read that explores the complexities of love and family while dealing with personal trauma and struggles. The story follows the lives of Mercy and Brooks, two flawed and cynical characters who reconnect years after a short fling. The chemistry between them is slow-burning and palpable, and the author does an excellent job of building up the tension and chemistry between them. Mercy is not looking for love which is made clear from the moment she is introduced in the story so getting to see her fall fast and hard for Brooks was adorable.
One of the things that stood out to me about this novel was the well-developed characters. Mercy and Brooks are relatable, and their struggles with their traumas and issues are authentic and believable. The author also does a great job of weaving in side characters, who add depth to the story and help move the plot forward.
The novel's pace is steady, and the plot is well-crafted, with enough twists and turns to keep me engaged until the end. The story is not just about the romance between Mercy and Brooks, but also about their individual journeys and growth, which made the story all the more compelling. I truly enjoyed Brook's fatherhood journey and loved his interactions with his daughter.
The author's writing style is engaging and emotive, and she has a knack for drawing the reader in and keeping them invested in the story. I appreciated the closed-door/fade-to-black romance, which felt appropriate for the story and added to its charm.
Overall, "Love Notes" is an enjoyable read, with well-crafted characters, a compelling plot, and a satisfying ending. I would highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance and those looking for a heartwarming story with relatable characters. It's a solid 4-star read that is well worth your time.
Thank you to my partners, Rachel’s Random Resources and NetGalley, and the author, Aimee Brown. I appreciate the gifted e-copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily!
Loved this one! A fun romcom that you don’t want to miss! You can read it on Kindle Unlimited, too!
1. Brooks - So here it is…the day I read a romcom with one of my son’s names as the main male character’s name. Here’s me thanking the heavens that it is closed door romance at its finest!
2. Banter - I love the banter between the characters. It always makes a romcom even better when it makes me laugh out loud while reading it!
3. Foreshadowing - The ultimate “issue” that I saw occurring for Brooks and Mercy was screaming at me from very early on. However, this isn’t your regular ol’ Hallmark romance. I loved the way this romance was written through and through!
4. Friends and Family - Both Brooks and Mercy have a trusting group of friends and family behind them. But with the good, we also see the bad with Mercy. Everything in life isn’t sunshine and roses and Brown has shown us through the eyes of Mercy.
5. Second-Chance Romance - In a sense, we do have a second chance romance at foot here. While things may have been a tad different the first time around 😉
I was thrilled to find out that this is part of a series and I cannot wait to read every character’s story! I love a series where we get the perspective of each character in each new book! Keep ‘em coming, Ms. Brown!
Thank you NetGalley for sending me this in exchange for my honest review!
Mercy, a music prodigy, has a tough backstory. Her dad is a drug dealer and murderer, but he’s in prison. What happens when he sends her a letter? Brooks, a divorced, single Dad, who also happens to be a detective and play in a band, has had a rough go with dating. He is constantly getting dumped. What happens when he is at a show and sees a familiar face? Brooks and Mercy’s story is beautiful. I LOVED this book so much. I thought everything about it was wonderful in every way! I highly recommend this for any romance lover!
This was a heartfelt yet fun second chance at love romance between two older characters who don't have much faith in finding their HEAs. I loved that both MCs are musicians (one a professional and the other something they do for fun). There's a lot of family baggage (murderer father, single dad) but also lots of great secondary characters who keep things lighter. Good on audio too and definitely one I'd recommend. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
Steam level: low, mostly only kissing/fade to black

"Love Notes" hits all the right notes if you're looking for a heartfelt romcom that will make you laugh, cry, and squeal in equal measure. Mercy and Brooks are absolutely perfect for each other, and I'm not usually one for 'love at first sight' (although I do feel this book uses that trope in a more effective, less saccharine way which makes it incredibly effective.)
This book will be perfect for fans of the single dad trope who are looking for lots of tension in their romances. There is a slightly darker storyline with Marcy's father going to prison, so please take care with your TWs if that's something that may affect your reading experience!
A super boring romance book. The male lead had so much more chemistry with his ex wife than the actual love intrest. They are also basically in love with each other from page one and therefore there's no arch.
I’m one great big sighing, swooning, grinning mess after reading Love Notes! Was it fate, luck, timing, or something else that brought Brooks and Mercy together? It could be any of those things, but it’s also because Mercy is a wounded soul, unsure if she is capable of loving someone, or if she’s someone that could be loved by another. And Brooks is so undoubtedly the person who can love, support, and protect her, the person who will always show up for her. Sure there were some walls to climb, but their honesty and willingness to see the real person in front of them warmed every inch of my heart. Lots of raw emotion and pain in this book, all of which is tempered by the love and care that oozes off the page.
Love Notes by Aimee Brown Romcom Release date: 3/23
-Second chance -overcoming trauma -found family -Hot tattooed, single father MMC -Closed door (but the sexual tension is HOT)
Mercy feels like she can never truly love anyone after her traumatic childhood. But when she runs into an old hook up of hers--Brooks--, she starts feeling butterflies she can't seem to get rid of.
I'm official Aimee Brown fan girl. This book takes place in the same world as her last one (He Loves Me He Love Me Not--which if you haven't read it, get on it!). Mercy and Brooks give ME butterflies. They are fast talking, sarcastic soulmates that I will never get over. I loved this book because it was a story of them coming together without crazy miscommunications or third act break ups. Plus, the cast of characters are so spot on! I adore all of them and can't wait to read more about them in this world! Two thumbs straight up!
Thank you to Netgalley, Boldwood Books and Aimee Brown for this eARC in exchange for an honest review!
Love Notes follows Mercy Alexander, a woman who does not believe in love or happy endings, and Brooks Hudson, who is the exact opposite. After a short friends-with-benefits phase under fake names, Mercy and Brooks lose contact until years later when they meet in a bar and sparks fly once again.
I really enjoyed this one actually. The first book in this series, He Loves Me He Loves Me Not, was a fun read, but definitely missed the depth of the characters in this one. Mercy is a very relatable character with an intense background story. Her character development was so precious and I truly believe she is such a well done FMC. Brooks, on the other hand, was missing something. I don't know why I just didn't connect to him. He had his moments, but most of the time, he was just there, yknow? I did love his relationship with his ex-wife and how it was actually a healthy one. We don't usually see that done in books so it was a great addition. I also loved the musical elements and adorable little Alijah :,) The insta-love with little development was one of the main flaws in this book that brought it down a few stars for me. The part where Mercy tackled her past and got her closure to move past it was the part that kept me hooked, surprisingly.
Overall, it is an enjoyable easy romance read, with a bunch of popular tropes, such as friends-to-lovers, second chance, he-falls-first, single dad, etc... I do think with better editing, it has a lot of potential for a higher rating. Definitely worth a read though!
TW// anxiety , violence , murder, cptsd , toxic father
Love Notes by Aimee Brown was a cute and heartfelt story. Mercy Alexander had a rough start to life that has left lasting wounds. She has sworn off love, wants to have a good time and focus on her music. Brooks Hudson is a sucker for love but finds himself dumped over and over again. When these two reconnect they are instantly drawn to each other and their connection is unmatched.
What I liked about this story was a MC who recognizes their flaws and does move outside of their trauma by putting in the vulnerability and work to make it happen. The supporting cast was hilarious and a HUGE part of the story. Brooks was cute to Mercy and who doesn't like a HEA. I also liked that they were honest with each other so there wasn't a ton of miscommunication happening.
I would have liked to have felt more of a build up and some angst between the two MCs. For all the talk of how much sex Mercy had and Mercy and Brooks' past, there wasn't a lot in the book. I found that a little unbelievable I went into this thinking this was a romance, but it really didn't feel like that, which is ok! I just wasn't expecting the depth to the story. Depth is good! Brooks is a GOOD guy and he is exactly the person Mercy needs to move past the trauma of her childhood.
I did not read the first book in the series and I didn't feel like it was necessary to do so. This was a quick and fun read and I would recommend. 3.5/5
Thank you to Netgalley, Book an Tonic, and Aime Brown for an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was so cute! The FMC, Mercy was a bit of a lovable mess and it made me absolutely adore her. She was down to Earth and had her own baggage she was dealing with but was still a force to be reckoned with. Brooks, the MMC, complimented her perfectly. They were surrounded by a quirky cast of characters that helped them along the way. There were quite a bit of characters and at times it was hard keeping track of them all. I had to go back and reread some parts in order to figure out who was who.
I loved that there was realistic, funny AND honest dialogue. They were very open with who they are and what they were going through. Basically a take it or leave it mentality that was refreshing to read. They were clear and transparent with each other which is not often something you see in a romance story but it was still entertaining to read. I honestly wish more stories were like this. I'm a sucker for witty banter and this book had it in spades. I genuinely enjoyed it. This book is part of a series and I definitely want to go back an read book one because this was so enjoyable.
This was the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it! It was a lot more sweet and tender than I thought it was going to be based on the description. And while this is a romance, it also has a lot of focus on character growth for both the main characters, Mercy and Brooks. It was a super tender book as they are both working through their own demons and it's so cute seeing them get to know each other.
Brooks was the perfect guy and I have no idea how women kept dumping him instead of locking him down. He's such a cute girl dad and cares about and is just an overall protective (in the best way) guy for those he loves.
Mercy is someone who doesn't believe in love and when she starts to get butterflies around Brooks it's so funny how she is like "uh yeah nope, what the heck is this?" She's a very real feeling character. She has plenty of good reasons to feel the way she does about falling in love given her childhood but she also has the sweetest found family that supports her.
I definitely recommend checking trigger warnings before reading this one!
"I like you way more than I expected to, and every time I look at you, that grows a little more."
Tropes: - single dad - tattooed hero - snarky and lovable heroine - found family dynamics - closed door
dual POV 4/5 stars ⭐️ 0.5/5 spice level 🌶
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC.
I adore all of them and can't wait to read more about them in this world! Two thumbs straight up
Brooks is a nice guy, has a good relationship with his ex, has an adorable daughter, his job has horrible hours, and he would like to find his true love. Mercy is a talented musician, had a traumatic childhood, has a group of amazing friends, and she doesn’t believe in finding true love. It was fun to see these two get to know each other!
On the flip side, this was more than just a romcom, because Mercy’s childhood trauma is addressed throughout. But it was a well written storyline that helped me understand the characters better.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. Watch for Love Notes to come out March 23, 2023!
I was in love with this story!!! The two main characters had big things to work to overcome and through the intermingling of their pasts and present life situations they work through them together. I really enjoyed how the author had them look at the true meaning of fate/love at first sight and that it's beautiful example of finding the right person and what it looks like to be with them at the right and wrong time. Reading I felt like I knew each character so well and that I was almost always in the story with them.
I really enjoy reading this book. I was expecting a romance novel but it was so much more than that. Even though romance was a big part of this book I liked that it also touched other topics. I also really enjoyed the way this book was written in her and his perspective.
Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood books for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!
I adored this book. I have to thank Bolwood books and Netgalley for this opportunity. I was feeling so there, so present. I fall in love with the main characters. Two people thinking they do not deserve more love. But they both have really special friends around. They had many things in common. And also an one night stand few years ago. But this second time they meet everything is different. They both feel something nom thinkable and are afraid of not seeing the other anymore. They are so cute, funny and sweet that you melt down without really steamy scenes.
It’s not particularly well written (I really got confused a lot of times and had to reread some paragraphs to understand, mostly in regards to the characters and the link between them).
Also, there are a lot of stereotypes in my opinion and they are kind of exaggerated. I couldn’t connect to the characters at all.
3.75/5 stars! This was a good book, but it was a little deceptive in its marketing. It was more a story of growth and healing from trauma with a backdrop of romance. I still really enjoyed it; it was just very different from what I expected. Overall, Mercy and Brook's capacity to come back to each other over and over until they got it right felt so genuine and real. A special story.
