When people ask me what I love about living in the Pacific Northwest, that's easy. Nothing.
But the mountain of debt my ex saddled me with means I'm not going anywhere. So I started a food blog thinking it'd be my ticket out of here. Wrong.
Just when I think things couldn't get any worse, my roommate drags me to a singles event where she hopes to meet Mr. Right. I meet Mr. Wrong, Dustin Kelley, a diehard Pacific Northwesterner. We couldn't be more different if we tried.
But when I learn he runs a successful hiking blog, I get an idea. We can collaborate. The plan? He gets five tries to make me fall in love with this region while I create recipes and food for our trips.
Turns out, Dustin is the sweetest guy I've ever met and he quickly becomes my ray of sunshine in this otherwise gloomy place. But falling in love was never part of the plan, so when my blog finally takes off giving me enough money to move, I'm left with a tough choice—stay or go?
Lizzy Barlow loves writing books filled with sassy heroines and the guys they fall for. She considers herself not too shabby in the kitchen and wishes the rest of the house would clean itself. When she's not writing, you can usually find her outside trying to nurse the plants she swore she wouldn't kill (this time) back to life.
Low-angst, contemporary, chick-lit romance set in Seattle, with a Cinnamon Roll love interest
Fourteen months ago, 32-year-old Julie relocated to Seattle with Mason, her then fiancé. She was very happy with her job, her friends, and living near her beloved mother in Dallas, Texas, and she had no desire to move away. But Julie dropped everything important to her to move to the Pacific Northwest with Mason, who had finally landed his first real job in the entire seven years she had spent codependently propping him up. She didn’t want to stand in the way of this unprecedented milestone, since he was finally going to earn enough to repay the $20,000 in high-interest debt he had run up on her credit card for frivolous purchases. But a mere two months after arriving in Seattle, Mason dumped her for a more prosperous sugar mommy and left Julie holding the bag for all his debts as well as a lease on a house whose rent she could not afford on her own. Julie was forced to get a roommate, Fern, who is around her age.
For the past year, as is typical for chick lit, Julie has been working at a mind-numbingly boring, low-paid office job with a toxic atmosphere because of a malicious coworker named Margot. Julie can’t quit, with no replacement job on the horizon. She has recently started a baking blog as a side hustle to potentially help her make enough money to move back home to Dallas.
Meanwhile, Julie’s only relationships are her regular phone calls with her mother and her slowly evolving friendship with Fern. Julie’s mother is an eternally upbeat, Winnie the Pooh type, and Julie is the exact opposite, an eternally downbeat Eeyore. Fern is like the little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead from Mother Goose: “When she was good she was very, very good, and when she was bad, she was horrid.” Most of the time Fern is bubbly and fun, but when she is frustrated, she sometimes throws screaming fits, but Julie excuses Fern’s bad behavior as merely stress and disappointment.
Burned on romance, Julie has no desire to go anywhere or do anything except cook dinner almost every night for herself and fortunate Fern, and bake goodies for her blog. Unwilling to consume all her high-calorie edibles herself, Julie offloads most of it onto Fern, who shares the treats with her coworkers, which has made Fern the most popular employee at her job.
Unhappily unmated Fern is desperate to latch onto a serious boyfriend and is constantly on the lookout for opportunities to meet Mr. Right through every singles event she can track down in and around Seattle. She is always trying to get Julie to go with her to these meet-ups, and Julie always firmly declines, up until the weekend that Fern refuses to take no for an answer for a singles hiking event at a local park. Because Julie drags her feet before leaving the house, she and Fern arrive late, and Julie is paired with the last available singleton.
Dustin appears to be about Julie’s age, and apparently no one has chosen him because he is tricked out in so much special hiking apparel and equipment, he looks ridiculous. But Julie soon discovers that first impressions can be deceiving. Underneath all that kooky gear, Dustin turns out to be a handsome man with a lean, athletic build. He is also an IT professional, whom we can assume makes an excellent salary, which would make him a potential good provider for a family. Best of all, he has a saintly disposition. Dustin is a classic “Cinnamon Roll” MMC. He is considerate, attentive, generous, and unfailingly sweet natured.
While Julie spends the morning hiking and chatting with Dustin, she learns that the two of them have something significant in common: they both have a blog, though Dustin’s is much more successful than hers. His focus is hiking, and after years of consistently posting interesting content, he has garnered tens of thousands of followers and enough income from ad revenue and product offers to finance his frequent weekend trips. Though Dustin has never traveled anywhere outside his home state of Washington, due to his countless hiking adventures, he has gained an exhaustive knowledge of virtually every outdoor recreation possibility in the entire state. When Dustin learns that Julie abhors the climate of the Pacific Northwest, with its overcast skies and frequent rain 90% of the year (though she doesn’t outright confess that she cannot wait to return to eternally sunny Texas because she wants to see where this relationship with Dustin might go), he tells her that he has a great idea for a joint venture involving both of their blogs. He will take her on five touristy outings in and around Seattle and attempt to change her opinion of the area. For her part, Julie can prepare a meal or snacks for each of their outings, and he will promote her baking blog in his own posts about those outings. Simultaneously, she can post recipes and photos for her food contributions. Julie immediately accepts Dustin’s offer, because she has nothing to lose and a lot to gain. However, she tells Dustin she’s concerned that the rewards will be one sided. What will he get out of this arrangement? He reassures her that the project will be mutually beneficial, because it will liven up his blog. And so their friendship begins.
This novel is a chick-lit romance. As is typical with chick lit, it is written in the sole, first-person point of view of the FMC. The beginning 20% of this story has a humorous focus, as most chick lit does, because Julie has an entertainingly snarky voice as she carps about her bad luck, which is essentially self-created, since she has been a doormat in her relationship with her ex and is currently a doormat at her job. As the story moves into a slow-burn, “friends to lovers,” romance plot, there is less comedy, and the tone becomes light drama.
If you have never been to any of the scenic, recreational areas of the Pacific Northwest described in this book, Julie’s five outings with Dustin will serve as an extensive travelogue of that region. The author paints such a vivid, omnipresent picture of the region that it becomes practically a third main character in the story.
This novel is mildly PG, with no drunkenness, wild parties, or overt, raunchy sex. There are a couple of quite tame sex scenes toward the end, with very little description. There is a relatively small amount of foul language.
SPOILER: My biggest complaint is that after spending the entire book giving us a tour of the scenic areas near Seattle, where Julie has a terrific time and is wowed by the natural beauty, she remains just as determined to move back to Texas as she was at the start. It feels like a betrayal of the entire premise of the novel, which is to convert Julie into a fan of the Pacific Northwest. In fact, it makes no sense as a way to end a book that is part of a series centered around the Pacific Northwest. It comes off as a contrived sacrifice, with Dustin making the ultimate CR gesture by uprooting his entire life to move to Dallas, though they have not even become engaged by the end of the book. Meanwhile, Julie sacrifices nothing for love herself, which makes for an extremely imbalanced relationship.

no começo eu tava gostando do livro, mas achei que foi ficando repetitivo todos os lugares que eles iam ter bastante descrição, e não senti tanta química entre os personagens. achei o dustin meio sem sal e babaca em algumas partes de não responder ela direito
Picked it up on random because it was free on books but turns out better than I expected. Fast paced, suitable for when in reading slump and I was worried if the book has spiciness but fortunately that was not the case.
Julie’s ex left her with so much debt that she could not afford to leave the Pacific Northwest which she hates. Her roommate drags her along to a singles event where she talks to Dustin Kelley who is a hiking blogger. She makes a deal with him that can try five times to convince her to love this area and she will create recipes and food to take on their trips.
Surprisingly, her food blog gets popular and she begins to make the money she needs to get out of there. But Dustin is such a good guy and she is starting to have real feelings for him. When she has enough money to move, will she be able to walk away? Or will she find out that their love is what really matters?
By the way, the Pacific Northwest is absolutely beautiful and breath-taking. I would accept Julie’s attitude better if she realized it was the bad memories of her ex she wanted to run from and not the gorgeous locale.
This would probably be closer to a 3.5 rating for me. It’s a cute, feel good story and ends very sweetly. I loved the idea of the blog collaboration that involved exploring an area and food. It wasn’t a page turner, and definitely had some cheesy moments. But in all, a pleasant read.
Not Supposed to Happen is a charming opposites-attract romance set against the stunning (but often rainy) backdrop of the Pacific Northwest. The story follows a reluctant heroine who’s desperate to escape the place she feels trapped in and a hero who embodies everything she claims to dislike. When a collaboration between their food and hiking blogs brings them together, what starts as a professional deal turns into a sweet, slow-building romance. Their relationship develops naturally, making it easy to root for them, but the final decision on whether to stay or go adds a bittersweet layer to the ending.
Tropes Opposites Attract – City-loving food blogger vs. outdoorsy hiking enthusiast. Forced Proximity / Collaboration – Working together forces them to see past their differences. Slow Burn, Low Spice – A romance built on connection rather than just physical attraction. Finding Home Where You Least Expect It – A theme that plays throughout the book. Spice Level 🔥 (Low) This one focuses more on emotional depth than steam, making it a great pick for those who prefer closed-door or minimal spice romance.
A sweet, feel-good romance with natural relationship progression and well-developed characters. While the ending might not be for everyone, the emotional journey and heartfelt connection between the leads make this an enjoyable read. Perfect for fans of opposites-attract love stories with a strong sense of place and personal growth. 🌲❤️🍽️
Plot: after being left by her fiance, and a massive pile of credit card debt, also courtesy of said ex, Julie is determined to get back to Texas after paying down her debts. When she is dragged to a singles event by her roommate, she meets Dustin, a hiking blogger with much success. After deciding to collab, in hopes of making more money with her own blog, they spend a lot of time together. What will be in store for their broken hearts? Will they leave things friendly? Will Julie move?
What I liked: I liked that Dustin accepted his feelings and ran with them. He never failed to make sure Julie was comfortable. He also spoiled her. I liked that she was willing to give PNW a chance. Also, the “is it true” “every word” was giving “how to lose a guy in 10 days” vibes, and I’m all for it
What I didn’t like: I didn’t like that Dustin essentially ghosted her after their collab was up, even though he said he wanted to keep spending time together. I also don’t like that he jumped to conclusions about the Dallas apartment
Swearing: major and minor swearing
Physical intimacy level: open door, not super explicit
I couldn’t have chose a better book to read for my week of vaca. What makes it even better is that without my evening knowing the location…it is exactly where I was heading for presidents week. Seattle!!!! Somewhere that has been on my list to see for at least 20 years. And what makes it even more personal is like Julie I’m a girl from Texas. But unlike Julie I love the rain and gloom. The city, people, and neighborhoods. Throughout my reading I was highlighting places that I need to see next time I visit. I loved the flow of the story, the characters (fern is so likable I don’t understand how Julie took so long to get close to her) and the way it ended was just perfect. Although I would be interested in a book #2 to see what happens in Texas.
I really enjoyed the easy-flowing writing style. Sweet story!
Ok, I did enjoy the book, but I also truly detest the "third act breakup" in every book I find it. I'm sure the author decides it will add something important to the story, or perhaps just a few critical pages in length. Obviously, I don't really know the answer. I do know after living for almost seven decades that when someone you desperately love walks away in anger because they refuse to give you a few moments of their time, just so you can tell them "the rest of the story" and explain the details, then some of your trust is destroyed. No, not broken and possibly healed, but totally destroyed. It still hurts to see, even in a book.
The story of Dustin and Julie. They meet on a singles walk and when Dustin realises that Julie doesn't really like the area, he sets out to change her mind by taking her on days out. The plan is that they will both write about the days out on their blogs - his about walking and hers about food. Will he be able to change her mind about leaving? A great read - also makes me want to visit the area and do some of the walks myself!

She's hates Seattle, but is stuck there for a while. He has five outings to make her change her mind. Dustin has a hiking blog; he makes the plans. Julie has a food blog; she plans the meals/snacks. I loved this book - it's fast and fun, and these two are hilarious together. They've both got a bad breakup in the past, so there are trust issues for them to work through. This is a new-to-me author, and I never know how that will go. But this book was a delight to read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book is one of those that I will save and read again, because I enjoyed it so much....a funny, laugh out loud story that is really enjoyable! I just loved this book and I'm not giving any spoilers so if you want to know all the details you're gonna have to read the book!!!! I would highly recommend it to other readers!!!! Happy reading everyone
A nice, light read…this book follows Julie & Dustin’s paths as they both recover from break ups. While the overall book was a good read, I didn’t feel the chemistry between the characters. I felt like I was being told about their feelings for one another, but didn’t feel any emotion behind the words. Of course, the third act break up was kinda silly and predictable.
3⭐️ I slow played this book whoops. The story itself was cute and funny. I didn’t really connect with the characters because I felt that they themselves didn’t connect. You have Julie and fern who throughout the book are just roommates and not friends. And Dustin was nice.. idk that’s all I can say about him.
The story built nicely. Well thought out and cohesive. Loved the two MC’s. Their relationship development was steady without a lot of drama. Sure there was some but overall things moved along nicely. Lots of great scenery descriptions, felt like I was there on the beach with the starfish and the crab. Will look for next in the series.
Who ever though that the person you spend time with ending up being the one you fall in love with . This book is a good read and the characters are loveable .

I loved this book. I would have loved to read Dustin's side of the story too. Julie was an amazing woman, she could have given up but deep down she wanted to thrive, and she did. These two worked so well together. Dustin was a freaking sweetheart
Can I give more stars? What a sweet love story & a great storyline! I loved Dustin, Julie, and Fern. There’s a building friendship, love story, visual tour of the state of Washington, and the sweetest falling in love story. I cannot recommend this book enough!

This book was a refreshing read! Super cute and gave me hope that the love of my life will show up unexpectedly. It isn't smutty if that's what you're looking for. Just a cute romance book.
Beautiful story. I read the book quickly and finished it in less than two evenings. I particularly liked that the two characters visited locations and the nature was described so captivatingly that you felt like you were there yourself and enjoying the beautiful view. I liked it very much
