A Shroud of Midnight Sun

DEATH...

Leaving behind the headaches of local law enforcement in Alaska's North Slope, Inupiat police officer Ray Attla welcomes a few days of vacation with his wife and four-year-old daughter at a resort outside of Anchorage. He doesn't, however, count on an early morning bike ride down the rocky mountain trails that sends him flying through alpine paradise, crashing into a thicket of berry brushes...and landing just a few paces from a dead body.

AND DECEPTION

It looks at first that the victim fell from a ski lift, and Ray figures he'll report the accident to authorities and be on his way. It's well out of his jurisdiction, and he's determined to stay "off-duty." That plan changes when he meets the local lawman, an amiable sort who doubles as church pastor and hasn't got a clue how to proceed in a case with more questions than answers. And when Ray's little daughter, who is sensitive to traditional Eskimo ways, innocently begins to tell her daddy details of the case, Ray cannot beg off. Before long, he discovers the mysterious victim has led a murky double life of lies, adultery, mob connections, and industrial espionage. His vacation officially over, Ray walks a thin line between Feds and a dead man's dangerous secrets. A line that, if crossed, could turn this trip into Ray's last....

Officer Ray and their 4 year old daughter Keera are with his wife Margaret at a 5 star resort outside Anchorage where Ray plans to do some mountain biking and spend quality time with their daughter while Margaret attends a law conference. All looks to go as planned until Ray discovers a body on the Mountain on his first ride. With an inexperienced local Sheriff, who is also the local chaplain, relying on his help, and especially after the Feds arrive and organized crime looking to be involved, Ray finds his holiday to be anything but the vacation he planned. And surprised me.

This is another enjoyable series entry, with a misleadingly simple murder coupled with industrial espionage plot. Ray is grumpy, cranky, constantly protesting he's on vacation and not going to be involved, but just can't help himself. He just has to figure out the puzzle and keep the green Sheriff out of trouble. We also see that Ray is still fighting against both embracing Margaret's Christianity and his spiritual Inupiat heritage. Given that Keera exhibits gifts of the sight common among the Inupiat, and Margaret expects his support in her own faith, Ray isn't going to be able to ignore either spirituality for long. But it is amusing to see him grumpily try and repeatedly fail.

Bonus are the numerous scenes with the enchanting Keera and her new BFF 4 year old Ruby, the Sheriff's daughter.

Ray Attla is on vacation with his family at the Girdwood resort outside Anchorage; he finds a corpse at the foot of a ski lift tower - it looks like the victim fell. But autopsy reveals poison. Soon the FBI, US State department, and a Japanese corporation are involved, and someone tries to kill Ray. After lots of interesting characters and plot twists, killer turns out to be a Japanese businessman who killed the victim because he had stolen corporate secrets. "Midnight sun" refers to the summer solstice.

4 stars. Revisiting a series I started reading years ago. Always enjoy books that give me a glimpse of unfamiliar places along with a good mystery and entertaining characters.
