I rarely read short stories, but am glad I found The Time Merchant, a short but engaging fantasy for adults. Because the story includes a lesson and has a dreamy Japanese setting, it reminded me a bit of a children’s fairy tale. If you’re in the mood for a speedy read that’s different from the norm, give this one a try.

Our main character, the Time Merchant, has a challenging mission: He must find people who need more time and sell it to them. And what is the price? Whatever they value most. And the amount of time he can offer in exchange? Ah! Here’s the thing: whatever “that” is worth—no more, no less. What would you be willing to give to get more time in return? As you ponder this, consider whether it would be worth it.
And so, the Time Merchant, our reluctant hero, crosses the veil to find on a small boat to find such individuals.
This short fantasy story takes place in the Edo era of Japan. The writing is vivid, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Japanese lore and mythology take center stage in this story, and the depictions are superbly done. The Time Merchant’s interaction with the various characters is delightful and sobering at the same time. The lesson we walk away with as readers is powerful. How do we spend our time? And is it truly worth it? I really liked reading this, the message about the importance of time and not wasting it on meaningless things is so important. The importance of being intentional with our time resonated with me. Living in the U.S., where time for work and ephemeral fads seems like a religion, the moral of the story struck a chord. I enjoyed the book, and I recommend it.

This was a super quick read that had a supper profound message behind it. It really made me think about the importance of being intentional with ones time - that's something I struggle with so this really resonated with me. It was a great read and I really recommend it.

A cute short story with a wonderful message about the time we have on earth. I love the Japanese references and that took me back in time when I used to read more Japanese books. I usually do not read short stories because I don't get to really learn the characters so I am left now with questions about them and about what might happen next. And I think that makes the story a good short story.

I don't usually read short stories but I really liked this one. The Japanese mythology theme was gorgeous and the lesson the story left us with is one of the most important. I really liked reading this, the message about the importance of time and not wasting it on meaningless things is so important.
