Fall of the Horizon

Rate this book
The War of the Skies is over, the gods are gone, and the new world has begun . . .

Zara Santos is the adopted daughter of the Ikarrian king and mercenary of her kingdom’s guild, though throughout the Continent of Ribera she is known as the Rogue—the High King’s personal assassin. Every hunting season she kills in the hope to one day be free of her shackles. When Zara receives a unique assignment to hunt down the mysterious leader of the shadow markets, she will do whatever it takes to gain her freedom.

The war has left Ronan Menodora a shadow of the male he once was. The archangel grapples with the underworld to provide for those he cares about as retribution for the failures of his past. When various cities are destroyed, their citizens disappearing, he makes a dreadful discovery that threatens the survival of his business and seeks the help of the infamous mercenary.

As the unlikely pair delve deeper into the strange happenings of the Continent, along with the help of their close allies, rumors rise of the return of the Three Sun Gods—the main Primordials believed to be long lost to the mortal world—and the mystery behind the missing people may pose a greater threat than anticipated.

Fall of the Horizon is the first book in the Dusk and Dawn adult high fantasy series, and explores injustice, emotional turmoil, self-discovery, and romance.

“You are surviving in chaos. You could’ve let it destroy you. But here you are, being made from the ashes."

It’s not a secret that I love badass female assassins… but I might love morally grey characters, full of feminine rage, that wreak absolute havoc, even more. 😈 Zara Santos is an unforgettable character, that I just KNEW I was going to fall for, as soon as she stepped onto the page. From her devastating beginning, to her strength, bravery, dedication, and sass, I loved the evolution of the High King’s assassin ”The Rogue”, and my favorite Horizon.

“I wish you luck on your hunt.” “I do like the chase.” 🫦

Through a unique turn of events, Zara is sent to eliminate her next target… which happens to be the dark and mysterious Ronan Menodora, also the leader of the Sombra Shadow Markets, and let’s just say things might not go as she had planned.

“The scars you bear, my Horizon, I quite like them. Let me bear them with you.”

The side characters and found family in FOTH are fantastic, especially the female characters! Daria Calderón, the draconic princess and Zara’s sister, was one of my favorites and is a force to be reckoned with. Did I mention the bodyguard romance between her and the gorgeous vampire warrior, Ares Valdemar?!? And don’t even get me started on the entire mercenary guild of The Horizons!!!

“We spill blood to serve.
We spill blood to survive.
We rise when the blade falls.
We tread the path of silver and red.
We are the Horizon.”

Jessica Ayala’s talents for weaving gorgeous Latin influenced lore, her elemental magic system, and the stunning world building, in the Fall of the Horizon, were phenomenal. I adored the unique (almost pantheon of) Gods and Goddesses, mixed with archangels, vampires, fae, elves (my favorite), and all the mythical elements.

“Fierceness and bravery do not always have to come in the form of blades and armor, and boldness does not always have to come in fiery retorts and flares of anger. Strength is shown in many ways.”

I’d recommend this book to anyone that enjoys: reluctant allies to lovers (aka enemies to lovers 😉), slow burn romance, angst, pining, beautiful Latin inspired lore, found family, feminine rage, morally grey FMCs, and especially if you loved The Book of Azrael and The Crowns of Nyaxia duology!

“We are Horizons. We rise and fall like the sun, but we never die.” ⚔️

Thank you Jessica Ayala, I'm so grateful for the opportunity to read this amazing ARC.

4.5⭐️ I really enjoyed this! It was the perfect balance of plot and romance. This world is full of supernatural creatures. Elves, Werewolves, Archangels, Deities, Primordials, and Vampires. There are 3 main POVs.We follow 2 Elven sisters-one is a mercenary and the other a princess. We also follow an Archangel. The twists and turns had me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. Tropes: found family, reluctant allies to more, bodyguard(!!), and more but I don’t want to spoil anything. I’m definitely looking forward to continuing this series!

*4.5 stars - Make way SJM, I think Jessica J. Ayala might be coming for you!

"This is your doing. I am the monster you created... You have broken me, but I will be remade"

Well, upon picking up this book, I had not anticipated crying at 1am, but yet there I was... Jessica, you ripped my heart up and pieced it back together, just to smash it again. I don't think a book has made me sob like that since I read Kingdom of Ash. The last quarter of the book had me on an emotional rollercoaster, and I didn't know whether I wanted to be happy, sad, enraged or all of the above! I will admit that the book didn't snag my attention right away; however, the world-building, religions and political system were intriguing, and I really liked the multi POV, which gives you an insight on the goings on in and out of the kingdom.

The further that I got into the book, the more I became invested in the characters. Zara is a bad-ass assassin, filled with rage, who takes no shit, and takes matters into her own hands. Her character development throughout the story was incredible. The bond of Zara's guild runs deep and you can feel the love and protectiveness that they have over each other. I really loved each and every one of them. Ronan makes a fantastic counterpart MMC. His drive to protect his people and everything he has worked for is commendable. The tension and slow burn between the pair is so delicious, and I cant wait to dive more into the relationship building between them in book 2! Daria and Ares also have quite the intriguing relationship and I am SO looking forward to seeing how things evolve between the princess and body guard in their current state. I truly think Daria will be a force to be reckoned with!

The constant teasing of the Primordials and things to come further down the line is making me bite my nails to nubs with anticipation! All of the plot-twists that take place in such a short time gave me whiplash and left me feeling like maybe we don't truly know who everyone really is. I can feel something big coming and I need book 2 ASAP Rocky!!

Thank you to the author Jessica Ayala for providing me with an ARC copy of this book!

This is a chonky read, but I loved it. Multiple POVs, extensive world building, and a war between the gods!

FALL OF THE HORIZON follows three main characters:
- Zara Santos, the adopted daughter of the King of Ikarria and an elven assassin who begins to question the morals of the High King and the tasks he sets for her.
- Ronan Menodora, an archangel who wrestles with his mysterious past and his involvement in the continents deadly underworld.
- Daria Calderón, an elven Princess of the Kingdom of Ikarria who struggles to balance her duties as a future queen with her desire to explore the continent.

I loved how the characters were so fully developed, it really helped to center me in their journeys throughout the book. Daria was just so well written, I felt all the feels. But Zara? She had a redemption arc worthy of a SJM book.

My most favorite favorite thing was the world building though. Just the politics, the religions, and the hints about the Deities and Primordials? Yes!! I cannot wait to learn more about this in book 2. I haven't read anything comparable when it comes to having a truly unique god/religion/magic system that's so intertwined. Like there are 3 full countries we know next to nothing about and I cannot wait to learn! I alsl love how Ayala incorporated bits and pieces from other mythologies and folklore into the story, like with the Chaneque's.

Also can we take a sec to talk about how well executed the tropes were? The slow-burn romances, morally grey MCs, elemental magic, and the possibility that we could have dragons??? Yes!

Overall my only criticism would be that I wish the fight sequences were a little more descriptive, but other than that I loved this!

3,75/5 ⭐️ this book is objectively good. Perfect for FBAA and the book of azrael’s fans. The world building is great and there’s a lot to unpack. I’m still not 100% sure what’s the difference between deities, primordials and Suns and gods ?? But the plot is interesting enough not to be predictable. I was surprised by the plot twists at the end.

Now for the bad points. The writing style is a bit immature and could use some editing. The chapters are too short sometimes and so are the sentences which creates a sense of jagged reading.
I also had to skip some parts because it was boring. Honestly 1/3 of the book was not necessary and the book could have been shorter.
I was also a bit disappointed by the main romance because there was no build up or tension between the 2 characters. Just a I hate you phase, then I’m ignoring you and then wait I think I’m obsessed with you. Why ?
The side romance was wayyyyy better. I was actually looking forward to read more about daria and ares and couldn’t bother feigning Interest in the others.
I do hope these things will be better in the next book because I’m looking forward to knowing more.

Hi dear lovely fantasy reader - Yes! Yes, I'm talking to you directly! Listen to me - I know you.. sneak from one fantasy story to another for this little kick of being consumed into another world.. To lose yourself for a short time in a book so that you forget the whole world and the cold reality outside those pages? A sad reality without magic or incredible archangels who take care of our sad pieces of a broken soul? Yes, I understand you completely. I do the same thing all the time, BUT.. Jessica is here for us!

The beginning was a bit slow - world and character building took a while and these individual POVs of not two, but three characters.. I first thought it would not be quite as easy to get lost in the story and leave my life behind as I had hoped, but damn how quickly I was wronged and this little brain cell left over from my normal being humored me because I didn't notice it earlier how fast i lost myself again! This book easily caught me with a story that tells of so much anger and heartache and a story plotting so carefully created that I can't feel untouched by it. I was struck how much i felt while reading.. the agony, heartbreak, anticipation and happiness all combined. I really do loved that story and was so heartbroken I reached the end so soon but I'm eager for the story to continue and can't wait for the second book!

It has everything a fantasy heart desires. Magic behind every corner, a twisted heart of a morally gray FMC and this loving, fierce bond of family and friends and the cherry on top is absolute and will always be the enemys to lovers trope... but hell, I would give you all spoilers. Just read the book, it won't disappoint you!

Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood reader

Maybe I'm the problem here.

The book was fine. It's your typical story involving overpowered FMC with difficult past and morally gray “you're not alone in this battle anymore” MMC. And that's perfectly fine, because any other day I would devour a story like this one.

The book is on the longer side, but it felt neverending 😩 Sometimes I forced myself to read through the pages.

I think I wasn't in the right mood to read something like this.

Fall of the Horizon is a beautiful high fantasy that includes many favorite fantasy tropes in a setting unlike any I've read before.

I fell head over heels for these characters immediately upon their introductions. Zara, Daria, Ronan, Ares, and all of their companions create a balanced, well-thought-out cast that bring out the fierceness and heart in one another. Whether they're family, enemies, allies, or some combination of the three. Readers are treated with a stunning main cast supported (without being inundated) by side/background characters. I felt perfectly plopped right into their dynamics and I never wanted to leave.

The world-building is creative and stunning without being overwhelming. We're talking about gods, ancient beings of great power, wars, multiple kingdoms and rulers, various families, laws and cultures and great spans of time. Yet the author walks you through it with just the right amount of emotion with the history to make it all come together. The world is inspired by various cultures around the world and it all coalesces into a unique, vivid, and magical atmosphere.

There's action, plot, character depth, emotion, and everything I wanted and needed in a new fantasy series. The setup for book 2 is incredible; book 1 isn't even out yet and I'm already aching for book 2!!

I saw this cover and immediately put my name on the ARC request form. Then I read the blurb and knew I'd made an excellent decision. And then I read the book, and I found a top read of the month!

**Thank you SO MUCH to Jessica J Ayala for an ARC of Fall of the Horizon and an opportunity to leave my honest, voluntary review!**

*no spoilers*

oh. my. god. this book was EVERYTHING. i was quite literally taken aback by this book, the plot and these characters. i knew i’d love foth going into it, because it’s everything i love in a fantasy, but i didn’t imagine how much it would capture me.
everything about how these characters were written is so incredible, and the fact that this is only jess’s second book is mind-blowing to me. the way she tells a story, and how it all unfolds with no confusion while keeping you so entertained, is amazing. i cannot wait to go back and read her debut!

i’m so utterly immersed in this world and these characters that i cannot WAIT for book two. all the relationships, platonic & romantic, in this book are absolutely everything to me. they way jess wrote the familial bond between the ikarrian guild is so precious and so beautiful. i love this found family with everything i am. the attachment you get to these characters is unimaginable, because they’ve all been through so much pain, and continue to go through it that you can’t help but root for them. the relationship between ronan and zara is so well-written, and so true. while zara believes she’s damaged or too far in the darkness to be brought back, ronan is her light that shines brighter in every situation and the same vice-versa. zara and ronan are definitely two of my new favourite mc’s— with how they’re both so pained, yet so badass and beautifully emotional.
and then ares and daria, oh how my heart expanded for them. the moments between them were so subtle yet had me screaming at every whisper of a touch. i cannot wait to see whqt happens with them.

the plot-twists had my jaw ON. THE. FLOOR. i’m still in shock over so much that happened. i had moments where i cried, and moments where i was so angry at certain characters. and that’s my favourite type of fantasy. the type where your emotions are all over the place, all at once. where you can’t put the book down and you just keep reading. fall of the horizon is a hidden gem, and i cannot wait for the rest of the world to find it: i know when they do, they will be taken by a storm, because this book is everything.

FALL OF THE HORIZON
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DROPS 2.13.2024

This story…..this beautiful, magnificent story. @authorjessicajayala I think we ALL can agree when I say this book was so carefully written and thought out. I really enjoyed that the most!

You’ve single-handedly had me picturing every single moment that happened scene by scene. OUTSTANDING! I wanted to take my time with this EPIC story because it had ALL the elements I can ever love!🌞🩷

🌞Synopsis

Zara, your main FMC, a mercenary serving the High King of Elios every single hunting season. The leader of the Sombra Quarter (illegal shadow markets) Ronan, becomes Zara’s target. “GET RID OF YOUR MARK” is what engulfs Zara’s over all mission…..until things take a turn 🫠😉

World Building- Ahh yes, continent of Ribera made up of seven other realms! All which were unique in their own way.
I can honestly say The Realm of Ikarria has to be my favorite.

•The draconic realm, residence of the ether-wielding elves as well as shifters and humans, once home to the dragons; independent from the Aligned Realms!

Characters - MISS ZARA SANTOS! One HELL of a character!!
I truly believe she found her character ARC by the end of the story! and finding herself through her past was beautiful character development. The mysterious Sombra Qtr leader Ronan also has his character development throughout the entire book! and he’s totally SWOON worthy.

Besides the main characters you have:
arc angeles, vampires, shifters, gods, morally grey characters, and a slowwww burn romance that was just so epic in the story ITSELF!

More tropes within this story:

-Slow burn romance
- multiple POV
- Morally Grey FMC
- Forced Proximity
- Plot Twists
- Elemental Magic
- Bodyguard romance (side plot)
- She’s sent to unlive him
- Reluctant allies to lovers

10/10. I feel betrayed and distraught and I need the second one in my hands immediately. Seriously, add it to your TBR. From the very beginning, you can tell something is simmering under the surface of this book and it shows itself in the most delicious of ways. If you like fantasy, and archangels, and Gods, and Vampires, and Elves, and Dragons, and Realms yet to be discovered, and mercenaries, and more (Oh my!), you will like this book. Everything is weaved together so seamlessly and so...artfully, it made me remember why I love reading.

Maybe I'm sitting here in shock, maybe I'm rocking back and forth on the floor, maybe you'll never know if you don't read the book.

She was nothing but the heartbeat of pain, the endless
throbbing at the corner of her eyes and mouth. A bruising that tainted her sun-kissed olive skin.
It was in these bleeding moments that a pleasant silence found her.

I loved this book so much! Zara was my favorite. She was forced to be a mercenary and kill marks for Raziel. She couldn't escape and was haunted by the blood of the innocents that stained her hands.

Ronan Menodora had once been filled with light and love. The old
flames of war had destroyed all that made him worthwhile, and from those ashes he had emerged . . . hollow.

Ronan, the leader of the Sombra quarter my favorite mc was equally filled with darkness. Only he could understand what Zara was going through and I loved the way he was always there for her.

“Is that you, little wolf?”

“I wish you luck on your hunt.” His voice was low, sinful. “I do like the chase.”

The slow burn between Ronan and Zara was spot on!

I liked the character development of Zara's sister Daria from a timid and sheltered princess to a formidable one. I wasn't that invested in her relationship with the vampire general, Ares though.

There were amazing twists towards the end and I wouldn't have guessed that villain in the end! Can't wait for the next book.

Hello fellow fantasy lovers. Do you find yourself looking for your next best read? Or struggling to figure out which book off your TBR to read because you have so many? Don’t worry my TBR is just as long; but I’ve got your next read right here!

If you love different realms, gods, dragons, elves, angels and all that fantasy has to offer..? Then this book is for you!

The start of this book was a little slow, and it took me a moment to get into it with the multiple POV’s but once you get in I couldn’t put it down! Now if you’re looking for spoilers this is not the post for you. I got this book as an eARC and I read it during work because I needed to continue the story to know what happened.

This isn’t like your normal fantasy book, it is easy to get lost once you progress in the story yes but there is so much character to this. I could feel the emotions, the heartache. I felt myself in the story.

You’ll follow Zara, the adopted daughter of the Ikarrian. His personal assassin (TOG lovers). And Ronan an archangel who wants nothing more than to provide for the ones he cares about. (Sorry all the spoilers you’ll get).

You see and follow Zara’s pain and heartache. You watch her growth, and strength as the strong fierce MFC.

One of my absolute favorite 2024 reads so far. I can not wait to see more from Jessica. I can’t give any spoilers away, but I will leave you with this one line “Welcome to my home. To our home”.

I highly recommend adding this to your tbr reads.

This book broke my heart and stitched it back together. Everything was perfect to me, from the very first chapter I was hooked.
Zara is a great FMC and paired with Ronan they make a great duo showcasing power and emotion.
Daria is such a sweetheart, her sensitivity and resilience make her so likeable and Ares- the way he turned from stoic to shy at times felt endearing. I hope we’ll get so much more of their story in the next book, I’m hoping for an enemies to lovers dynamic. Their tension was top notch.
The way the side characters cared for Zara and the other way around was unexpected- I rarely notice/ care about details like this (yes, I’m talking about Hakim if you know you know).

I LOVED this book. The characters have enraptured me and caught my attention!

I cried, laughed and truly felt the despair, sadness and anger of the characters. I felt what they felt - which does not happen with all the books I read.

The world Jessica created is well thought out. The story is easy to follow and very well written.

I was provided an ARC and have not been able to put my kindle down. Really looking forward to continuing this series and follow this characters through their self discovery journey and all the adventures that lie ahead.

Thank you Jessica. I was in a reading slump and this book returned my will to let myself be completely immersed into fantasy worlds, elves, vampires and archangels (among others)!

Cannot recommend it enough!

Full review to come but for now, let’s just say this made me feel the same way I did after first reading House of Earth and Blood. I am forever changed by this book.

……..

Fall of the Horizon is a story of archangels and assassins, immortals and shifters, shadow dealers and mortal warriors. The novel begins in a constant state of war, depicting how much trauma is caused by endless violence and injustice. At the center of the story is our duty bound FMC, Zara Santos and the man she is sent to kill, Ronan Menodora. The novel features even more characters in a sprawling cast that never feels too cumbersome. And the relationships—platonic or otherwise—rival those seen in Throne of Glass and The Plated Prisoner (the Guild will fill the gaping hole left by The Cadre and Rip’s Wrath).

Jessica J. Ayala is an expert at creating lush, sprawling kingdoms with a history full of secrets, lies, and unique lore. The budding romance is a slow, slow burn brimming with tension. And the stakes are high, forcing the Guild into endless adventures without any warning how things will end up. I felt a rush a blood to the head watching the action and adventures unfold. The plot twists are so well done, you will never see them coming. I cannot thank Ayala enough for an eARC of this incredible book.

An absolute MUST READ if you’re a fan of high fantasy!!
———

At a young age, Zara Santos was thrust into a life that was not of her own choosing. Forced to become not only a mercenary of Ikarria, but the personal assassin of the High King of Elios. Raziel, an archangel who came into power after the 14 year War of the Skies ended and the Primordials were banished from the continent, is truly THE dickbag supreme.

Every year he enacts the hunting season — a seasonal ritual to honor the High King’s rule where the mercenary guilds across the Continent gather in the capital to hunt down supposed traitors and criminals. Only this particular hunting season is different. Raziel is determined to rid himself of an ever present thorn in his side: the mysterious leader of the Sombra Quarter and the illegal shadow markets. And the high king has tasked his personal assassin to find and kill him and if Zara does not fulfill her duty, there will be a heavy price to pay.

But Ronan Menodora made a vow. Atone for the failures of his past and to provide for the people he cares about. A vow he intends to uphold no matter the cost, even if it takes a few sacrifices to do it. However, strange occurrences begin to happen in the outer districts; whole towns wiped out seemingly overnight. The mysterious anomaly threatens the very survival of Ronan’s home and his business so he seeks to ally himself with the one person he shouldn’t. Enemies turn to reluctant allies until facades crack and both Zara and Ronan begin to quietly hope for something more than what life has offered them.

“Remember who you are, Santos.”

“You are a Horizon. You are the roar of the thunder and the power of the wind. You are more.”

Fall of the Horizon is an intricate amalgamation of some of the best themes in high fantasy. It’s a true adventure story of injustice, redemption, self-discovery, and romance that brings together so many otherworldly races to create a complex and ingenious fantasy story. It also delves deeply into the confines of Zara’s mind as she navigates the dark waters of trauma and coming to terms with her past and present.

The writing is so well done and brings all the complexities together in such a way that is very fluid and engaging. The characters have commanding presence, the world such depth, and it truly gives it a transcendent quality. The world building is teeming with detail all while giving voice to the various cultures + political structures of the many races. And I LOVE when authors can take the fantasy scale and make it so grand it allows you to fully transport yourself into the book but without it being overwhelming.

This story is told from multiple POV’s and I loooved that aspect a lot. It really allows the characters to be fleshed out and I was able to connect with them on a more emotional level which I truly appreciated. Ronan and Zara’s slowburn, enemies to lovers romance is so freaking good! The tension is taut and their banter is an absolute delight. Individually they are great characters, but together they stand out even more. Also, I’m such a massive fan of having two strong characters being on equal footing while bringing out the best in one another. It’s truly a chef’s kiss feature for me and it is done so well. I also really enjoyed Daria’s POV because it allows us a different outlook from someone who doesn’t have the twisted past like Zara and it gives us a bit of light in a rather dark main storyline.

And don’t get me started on the plots twists and various reveals throughout. It is such a RIDE. The setup for book two is without a doubt one of my recent favorites and I cannot wait to continue Zara’s story.

⟡ 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 5/5
⟡ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞: 2.5/5
⟡ 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: Multiple POV, morally gray FMC, villainous criminal MMC, elves, vampires, shifters, mythology, enemies to lovers, slow burn romance, open door spice, forced proximity, bodyguard romance side plot, witty banter, found family, elemental magic systems, trauma rep, secrets, betrayal, action + fight scenes, cliffhanger(ish) ending
⟡ 𝐂𝐖: please check the disclaimer before reading. A few to note: violence, death, torture, emotional abuse, self sabotage, alcohol use to cope, grief, bullying

I got this as an ARC and First off I really need to express just how much I loved this book. This book is 100% going to be one of my top reads of 2024. Hands down. The story, the plot, the romance, the relationships; They were wholesome in a world where it was nothing but dread and heartbreak.

To get to why I loved Fall of The Horizon:
I do tend to read the tropes beforehand because I know what I enjoy and this one was riddled with my favorites. That being said, they weren’t thrown in there for the sake of having tropes. They were truly written and woven into the story and they were IMPORTANT to each characters plot. This is why I enjoyed it SO MUCH. I love a good tropey book, but when it’s done with intention, it just makes it that much better.

Some of the tropes —
• Slow Burn ❤️‍🔥
• Morally Grey Assassin FMC ⚔️
• Found Family
• Forced Proximity (this one had me in a CHOKEHOLD)

Mentions of all the beings I LOVE:
• Gods
• Deities
• Elves
• Archangels
• Magic

— THIS MAY CONTAIN SMALL SPOILERS —

This book has scratched that ToG itch for me. When I think of WHY I fell in love with ToG, this reminds me of that. It was something about the characters and the story and the romance that was just SO. WELL. WRITTEN. I am genuinely so in love with everything that this book offered. I will not ever stop raving about how much this book made room in my heart for itself haha.

The FMC Zara? Absolute badass. You know how sometimes we get an assassin FMC but isn’t good at it? That’s not Zara. She is a FORCE to be reckoned with. She is deadly and it shows. Zara is coined the Rogue, which is the High Kings personal assassin that everyone hates. She is forced into the role as punishment for her father unwillingly swearing fealty after the War of Skies, and now searches for ways to break this forced bond between her and her guild and the treacherous High King that looms over them and their lives. When her latest mission is to unalive the mysterious leader of the Sombra Quarter, leader of a faction of shadow dealers, she is lead into an alliance that she doesn’t expect. Her journey to become free of the High King may be closer than she imagined, but can she rely on the leader?

Our MMC Ronan? I LOVE him. He is a giant golden retriever wrapped up in honey but also so deadly. I LOVED the duality in the way he is written. Yes, he is soft and sweet, but he is not to be mistaken for weak. He is the leader of the Sombra Quarter and Zara’s recent mission to unalive. Ronan is an archangel that rose to the ranks and leads the shadow dealers that threatens the High King. When he meets Zara there is instant chemistry that leaves both of them questioning. He is the other side to Zara’s coin. Both tortured, and lost. He suffers with great loss and regret. He grieves and looks for reprieve and may be finding it in Zara. His proposal to her is enough for her to temporarily pause her mission in claiming him as another mark on her hit list, but is his promise too good to be true? Will his secrets and regrets undo everything he built with Zara?

Now to speak about my favorite side characters- Daria and Ares. Giggling. Blushing. Kicking my feet. I loved their banter, their friendship, their TENSION. I wanted to scream. I loved being in their heads so much and the little details in the interactions? I LIVE FOR MOMENTS LIKE THEIRS. They open one another up in ways they don’t expect and reading it made me giddy 😭

Daria is sister to Zara, Princess of the Draconian Kingdom of Ikarria, daughter to King Idris. She is a breath of fresh air. She is the sheltered, scholarly daughter who was raised opposite of Zara. While Zara was a trained warrior, Daria was the complete opposite. Her mind was her weapon and she wields it WELL. It is always nice to read about women who are strong and warriors in DIFFERENT ways other than physical. Daria becomes Ambassador to her kingdom when the High King requests that Ikarria join them for the Summit (a time where the aligned kingdoms celebrate all that has been achieved by them), an invitation that has never been extended to the independent kingdom before. Daria elects to become the ambassador to help uncover any secrets the King and its reigning deities may be harboring. When she and her father arrive, the High King appoints a general as her bodyguard given their kingdom is in the middle of a hunting season (where all the mercenaries and guilds go on missions to unalive traitors to the King/continent) and she a royal who may be targeted. This is where one of my favorite SMCs comes in — Ares ❤️‍🔥

Ares is a general to the vampire kingdom, and is the most merciless, and cunning general. He questions his role in being posted as a mere bodyguard to who he views as just another spoiled royal. As we read more into Ares, pieces of his past become undone the more he a the princess get to know one another and cracks in his mask come undone when he realizes the princess isn’t the spoiled royal he believed her to be. Daria and Ares’s chemistry, their relationship, their tension is by far one of the sweetest I’ve read. I loved them together and how they come undone with one another and build trust. I want more and more of them please!!

The plot twists though?? I cannot. The gasps and open mouthed gaping I did. IM SCREAMING. I truly didn’t expect them and didn’t see them coming and all my predictions were wrong 😂 which tells me that this was so well done. I loved this entire book. I need book 2 immediately. Idk what I’m gonna do now that I have to wait lol.

Edited to add because I forgot to add it in:

THE GUILD! Oh my goodness. Found family x100. They are such a warm and welcome and wholesome addition to the story. They are mercenaries, but have all come together as one. Hakim, the leader, famously titled the Dragonheart for him being the fiercest human warrior to have fought and bested immortals themselves; Eshe the vampiress who is cunning, stealthy and part-time tattoo artist lol. And Axar the wolf shifter who is the equivalent of Zara’s brother. Together they are the ultimate band. They love each other so deeply and lean on one another in times of need. Zara’s moral and emotional support and they make me cry 😭😭😭

Read. This. Book.

GREAT READ.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

This one took some time to grow on me but once it did I was hooked. There’s a bit of a slow start and some info dumping that happens initially, then the story settles and you can really dive deep with the plot and characters.

I adored that this had multiple POV. I loved that two of the main characters were sisters who cared for each other and loved all the good and bad within each other. There was so much growth from Zara and Daria throughout the book that I very much would love to see where they go in book two.

And the romances?? I loved how they contrasted with the darkness of the book. They were much softer and subtler. The banter and pining was top tier and I loved the reveals and twists from the romances too. This had my favorite kind of slow burn where I get a chance to love the character separately and the chemistry they have between them feels naturally devloped.

I am intrigued by the ending and it was a fantastic cliff hanger. I am absolutely going to need book two and look forward to another book in this world.

Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy Romance
- Language: moderate
- Romance: 2-3 open; low innuendo
- Violence: high

I'll start with a thank you to Jessica for providing me with an ARC for my honest review!

I absolutely loved this work. The world building was stunning. As you read, you are given more and more about the world which helped deepen your understanding of what is happening. Jessica gave the communities within the world such depth that I really imagine the people and places even outside of the main characters. The world that Jessica built was just so diverse and alive and I just loved it.

The transition between the various characters was so smooth and never detracted from the overall pacing. I greatly enjoyed all of the characters and I cried over a few of them. Zara and Ronan...what can be said about these two. Their banter and partnership was really well written.

The plot is very interesting and I wasn't quite expecting some of the things that happened. The ending was awesome and really set the scene for the next book. I am really looking forward to continuing the journey in the next book.

I highly recommend checking out this book if you get the opportunity.

I received an eARC from the author - this is a 5 ⭐️ read! I screamed, cried, laughed, hurt, I felt every emotion while reading this. Zara is everything to me. Her pain, her strength, her growth. Ronan is my newest book boyfriend and I would die for him. The story, the politics, the world, all of it is so good. Please please read this book when it comes out on 02/13/24

O.M.G. First off.. I need book two stat because I am REELING. Jessica you’ve outdone yourself. This book is EVERYTHING I’ve needed and more.

“Fierceness and bravery do not always have to come in the form of blades and armor, and boldness does not always have to come in fiery retorts and flares of anger. Strength is shown in many ways.”

I am so in love with this book. I just felt an immediate connection with the characters. I laughed, hurt, shed tears and my jaw dropped to the floor so many times. If you’re a fan of Crescent City archangels and Serpent and the Wings of Night vampires. Look no further. This has that vibe smushed together into a very action packed story that will have you wishing there was more when you read the last sentence.
Following not one, not two but three AMAZING character POVs. Zara, an elven woman put in a situation that she can’t escape from. Ronan, an archangel trying to better the life of people who have no where to go whilst trying to heal from his own traumas. And Daria, a draconic princess who knows little of the world outside of her realm and decides to attend “the Summit” to learn more of the other realms, maybe with a bit of other intentions too..

Starting with Zara.. her character spoke to me! And finalllly a morally gray FMC!! She’s so sarcastic, and snarky. Our favorite “violent little wolf”. But under all of that is one broken soul. I loved following her and watching her slowly believe more in herself. I cried so freaking hard with her multiple times.
Daria.. FIRELIGHT. One beautiful soul, I LOVED her character. She’s sweet but sassy. So smart, and I hope she gets everything she deserves 🥹
Ronan. PROTECT THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS. His story was very hard to read (in terms of heartbreaking). His growth throughout the story was as much as Zara’s if not more!

Ares…. *swoooooooooooon*. Morally gray to the core. (He’s a good man deep down I know it) But also touch her and ..you know. [insert meme of me giggling and kicking my legs any time he said any words] I would perish for Ares any day, 25/8. My book boyfriend of the year. (I need more of him and fan art of him immediately🫠🫠🖤)

I cannot waitttt to see where this story goes! Again, Jessica, this is such an AMAZINGLY thought out book. As an avid fantasy reader this checks all of my boxes from the beautiful world building to the slow burn romance that wasn’t too much or too little, but just enough! This is a book I’ll cherish forever!

Tropes (for those who dont like tropes don’t read past here). —

Multiple POV; Morally gray FMC/MMC; Pot Twists; Reluctant Allies to Lovers; Magic; Slow Burn

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book gave me throne of glass, mixed with the serpent and the wings of night with crescent city level world building vibes!

Every fantasy reader will LOVE this book!

I found the characters very interesting especially the FMC it’s defiantly a lot of character building, Zara is a very complex character with a lot of self hatred for the job that she is forced to do, defiantly morally grey!

I loved the side plot of Zara’s sister Daria & Ares I personally liked their story more and was more interested in their pov’s! You get 3 POV’s in the book which is something new for me I really did like it but found myself wanting to be in daria’s pov more!

The world building is very complex and I found myself skipping some parts as I’d just read HOFAS so I defiantly think I should’ve read a palette cleanser before this as the world building is beautiful and I did like the way the author described things so vividly!

The MMC didn’t really do it for me until a good 70% throughbut I think that’s because it was a slowwwww burn & I was drooling over Ares more! I love me a broody vampire 😻 but when Ronan started being cheeky I was in love 🫡 I expected a little more out of the relationship but Ronans pining & his filthy mouth had me swooning!! He’s so sweet!

The overarching story line was always strong throughout the book & I found myself wanting to know more about the higher powers that be in this world, again very throne of glass vibes which I loved!! The magic system is very elemental and there are lots of fantasy beings in this world that are very interesting!

Tropes - slow burn, multiple pov, magic, forced proximity, gods, pining, father figure & adopted daughter
Spice - 🌶️ 🌶️

There are a lot of emotions in this book which I always love, there’s character death, you’ll feel every emotion for all the main characters. There’s a lot of trauma going on internally for all the mc’s which you see some of them work through, but I feel book 2 will delve into more of that with the other main characters! I really enjoyed this book and will defiantly be reading book 2!
Thanks @authorjessicajayala for the arc♥️

Rating: 4.5 stars

While reading the book:

I'm reading this right now, and it's honestly so good. I love the male lead and the story of the female lead's sister—not that I don't like the FMC, but I would have liked to see a little more from her.

At one point, I started to feel a bit bored with the main characters because the sister's POV was so compelling in comparison, but then the FMC and MMC finally met and realized who each other were, and that scene was so good!

After finishing the book:

I’m giving it 4.5 stars because, overall, it was a great read, but I think there could have been a little more of a sense of threat or risk throughout the story, especially with brand/seals the guild had on them conpelling them to complete their tasks? The ending felt a bit overloaded—after the big reveal, I think it would have been better to either stop there or end shortly after they escape or reach Damalis. As it is, it felt like too much was packed in at the end.

I did enjoy the rest of the book, especially the sister's story. Daria's character really grew on me, probably because she showed a lot of growth and finally came out of her shell. I’m really excited to see her with the dragons soon!

I liked the MMC and FMC well enough, and I didn’t mind their short-lived enemies phase. It made sense for the FMC to switch sides once she found an ally who gave her hope to escape the king's control. We knew going in that they were going to team up, and I appreciated how the author handled their relationship—it was clear there was some attraction, but it wasn’t overdone or thrown in our faces. There was still a sense of distance and hesitation between them, which felt realistic given the risks they faced.

My one complaint is with the way the POV switches were handled. There wasn’t any clear indication when the perspective would shift from Zara to Ronan or Daria, and it was a bit abrupt at times. I think the format could have been improved, maybe with numbered sections or some kind of marker if they didn’t want to use names every time.

Overall, I enjoyed it a lot.

I’m in a long fantasy binge right now and was happy to pick up this book that should have:

Morally grey FMC/MMC
Assassin FMC
Dark-haired, dark-WINGED MMC
Slow burn
Enemies to lovers!!!!(reluctant allies in between)
He falls first
Political intrigue
Magical characters
Found family

It quickly piqued my interest literally just through the prologue. I knew immediately that I am in for a wild ride and I was not disappointed.

Both the FMC (Zara) and MMC (Ronan) are strong af survivors but tortured by the lives they were forced to live. The slow burn romance between them was just so satisfying - all the pining was sooooo delicious 😮‍💨 ALSO THE BANTERS BETWEEN THEM??? Ahhhhh

“However you want me,” he whispered. “I will gladly take what you give me.” -Ronan to Zara

*SCREAMS*

I love how they navigated their relationship quite maturely in such a complicated world! There was another couple, Ares and Daria, but I wasn’t as hooked to their story (yet) as with Zara and Ronan.

The world building was slow and steady, which I often like, since some fantasy books start out too strong and overwhelms me with information. I like when it shows me the world, not just tell me. The multi-POV gives it an epic fantasy feel - honestly reminds me of Throne of Glass - except this is grittier and spicier. The side characters were also really developed which gives the story a great depth!

My favorite is the heroine though. She was just phenomenal to follow. I mean —

“She was reborn, scarred by the tears and pain of those before her and her own, and she would rise.”

*squeals* I’m already super excited for the next book because I know Zara’s gonna kick some ass!!!!!!

4.5/5 All I saw was that it is a Latin-inspired fantasy world and I was like, "Sign me up!" I didn't know what to expect going into this book and I was blown away by the well developed characters and intrigue of this world!

This novel follows our FMC Zara Santos, who is the favored mercenary of the high king. She was initially found as a child, parentless, as a result of the past war. The Ikarrian king adopted her but as part of Ikarrian's agreement with Elios, Zara must be part of the hunt, hunting down whoever the high king, Raziel demands. Along the way she meets our archangel MMC Ronan Menodora. Who doesn't love a winged MMC! The two become unlikely allies when an a greater evil appears on the continent. This leaves room for mystery and good ole tension/yearning.

But that's not all! We also get the POV our FMC's sister (through adoption), Daria Calderon, the true princess of Ikarria. She has lived a much different life than, Zara, filled with days stuck in the castle and studying as opposed to Zara's grueling training and knives. But that doesn't diminish from Daria's intelligence and bravery. While Zara is off with Ronan, Daria gets to spend time in Elios for the first time with a broody vampire bodyguard named Ares who serves as the general for the vampire king.

I can't wait to see what is in store for not only our FMC and MMC, but also for Daria and Ares in book 2! Thank you so much to Jessica J. Ayala for this eARC!

I was l lucky enough to get an ARC of this book in exchange for writing an honest review. Let me start by saying I really enjoyed this book. It is kind of long and some of the parts were a little slow due to world building, but they were worth it in the end. I loved the heroine, instead of the reluctant hero she desperately wanted to be more than the villain role she was forced into. I also thought the ending was awesome, and setup up the next book well.

Things I loved:
- The heroine
- The sister relationship was done so well. Zara and Daria’s relationship was perfect. They weren’t sisters by blood but the bond was just as strong. I liked that there wasn’t competition between them, they supported and loved each other
- All of the found families were done so well. The Guilds relationship and dedication to one another was beautiful, Zara really had two paters. The guild saw Zara for who she was and loved her unconditionally.
- The story itself was really good and I thought it was very unique.

Cons
- It was longer and with switching between a couple different characters made some parts slow
- I wish we could have saw more interaction between Zara and her family

Overall I really liked the book and can’t wait for the next one. I have already recommended it to some of my bookish friends.

4.5 stars given
I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC from Good Girls PR as the second book is being released 23 September.

This was on my TBR for some time and I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it. As usual I’m already desperate to know what happens in book 2! Thankfully I don’t have to wait too much longer.

The story follows Zara Santos, our FMC, who is an assassin for the Kingdom’s High King. She’s tasked with finding and killing the leader of the shadow markets. We also have Ronan, our MMC, a mysterious archangel whose path crosses with Zara. They reluctantly start to work together to find out what’s behind the strange happenings on the Continent. Throw in Daria, Zara’s sister and heir to the throne, POV and you have a great story. Also have to mention Ares 😍 #iykyk

The world building here was amazing, especially as this is a Latin inspired fantasy world so interesting to see different mythology. The slow burn and tension is next level. Key tropes and highlights include reluctant allies, found family, slow burn, morally grey FMC & MMC, vampires, elves, archangels and shifters!

I loved the other characters in the book and the author wrote their relationships beautifully. Lots of twists and turns in this book so prepare for a bumpy ride! Make sure to read it now for when the next book comes out 🖤

Ahhhh! I have so many thoughts and feelings about this one… It took me over two weeks to read just due to life and a little reading slump. But by the end, I was hooked! I was feeling all the feels and didn’t want it to end/couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen. Honestly, the last like quarter of the book was more of a 4.5 maybe even 5 star read. But I felt like I had to slog through a lot early on - more of a 3 kind of feeling. There is SO MUCH world building and names and places and system of magic to learn. And it was a bit overwhelming; I knew I’d get to a point of understanding but even by the end, there were things mentioned from earlier on that I was having trouble remembering because there’s just so much. But I think this is just also more of a true high fantasy, slow burn, politics and mystery and multiple POVs sort of book. I think I was expecting it to be more like recent romantasy books when it’s really more akin to a Game of Thrones style story. Not to say there is isn’t more excitement and better spice though! So incorrect expectations was my fault, not the book’s.

All in all, I did fall in love with these characters and am committed to wherever this adventure takes us next, and I was sad when it was over. I just wish I had been hooked earlier on… it would’ve made this even more fun.
