Really engaging tale of the “neighbors” to the north of the Puritans, the original New Hampshire settlers. Not only do they have to figure out how to survive in a densely forested area, after a while their neighbors to the south begin to try to control how they do that. Since the excellent backstory of these settlers describes their English life, we can see how differently they want and need to act, compared to the Puritans. Lots of well-drawn characters, from English pub wenches to colonial Select Men. Loved it.
An enjoyable tale (after a slow beginning) about a young English man who leaves his love to sail to America to build a new life. She follows a year or so later. They raise a family and fight for the right to live free of constraints. Their son goes back to England for a few years but returns to continue the fight for freedom.
