I write under several pen names and in various genres: PJ Skinner (Travel Adventures and Cozy/Cosy Mystery), Pip Skinner (Sci-Fi), Kate Foley (Irish contemporary), and Jessica Parkin (children’s illustrated books). I moved to the south coast of England just before the Covid pandemic and after finishing my trilogy, The Green Family Saga, I planned the Seacastle Mysteries. I have always been a massive fan of crime and mystery and I guess it was inevitable I would turn my hand to a mystery series eventually. I will shortly publish the third book, Fatal Tribute. Before I wrote novels, I spent 30 years working as an exploration geologist, managing remote sites and doing due diligence of projects in over thirty countries. During this time, I collected the tall tales and real-life experiences which inspired the Sam Harris Adventure Series, chronicling the adventures of a female geologist as a pioneer in a hitherto exclusively male world. My childhood in Ireland inspired me to write the Green Family Saga, which follows the fortunes of an English family who move to Ireland just before the start of the troubles. I have also written a mystery on Mars, inspired by my fascination with all things celestial. It is a science-based murder mystery, think The Martian with fewer potatoes and more bodies. I have entered this book into the SPSFC 3 competition. You can vote for me in Listopia here on Goodreads on this list: The Self-Published Science Fiction Competition 2023 I also writes Children's picture books under the name of Jessica Parkin. They are humourous tales of a diverse family.
I've read several PJ Skinner novels, and I expected nothing less than a well-written, brilliant piece of work, and Deadly Return did not disappoint. This book is a suspenseful, cozy mystery with colorful characters and a flawed main character that is relatable and real. Other characters are well fleshed out as well, especially Mouse, whom I enjoyed immensely. I first became acquainted with Skinner's writing in the Sam Harris Adventure series. but is quickly becoming a top-notch multi-genre writer as well. Deadly Return is a fun read and keeps the reader flipping pages. It's suspenseful, humorous, and moves along at a steady clip. A great beach read that I highly recommend.
This is a good start to the series. I enjoyed getting to know Tanya and her friends. I particularly liked that she was an avowed luddite but pledges to change her ways as her relationship with her step-son, Mouse, blossoms. The mystery was well-paced and kept me guessing but there were a few instances of things I am not a fan of that happens in cozies – keeping information from the police, checking just one more thing, TSTL moments – that made this only a 3 star.
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.
‘Deadly Return’ by PJ Skinner is set in the seaside town of Seacastle, where former investigative reporter, Tanya Bowe, adjusts to life after marriage. Spending time with friends and running her own vintage shop keeps her busy. But when old school friend Mel comes back into town, a series of events pulls her back into investigative mode. Mel’s sudden death is labelled an accident, but Tanya is not convinced. As she probes into the case, secrets and lies abound and Tanya won’t stop until she finds the truth.
I really liked Tanya. She was determined to do right by her friend, even when others were warning her off. She was struggling to get her own life on track again, but went out of her way to help others. Her friendships were key.
As good a investigator as she was, Tanya realised that Mel’s death could not be solved by one person. Memories from the past and gossip from her friends were vital. A new business venture clearing houses gave her access to information and an excellent sounding board in Harry. It was this collaborative effort that stood out for me.
A well-written and enjoyable story with great characters.
As you all know....PJ is one of my favourite indie authors and I have read all of her books and I have loved every single one! I just can't pick a favourite.
So, you can imagine how excited I was to see that not only was a new novel coming....but it was also a new genre! One of my favourites....a cosy murder mystery. 😱
When Tanya is reaquainted with an old school friend who later is found dead, she can't help but get involved, especially as the police deem it an accident. As she uncovers more information, it soon becomes apparent that there are quite a few people with secrets to hide and the plot thickens....
As always, the character introduction worked beautifully. Tanya is getting over a messy divorce and making her way in a new place. It's really easy to like Tanya as she's so down to earth and relatable but also because being in a lonely situation, it really has you rooting for her from the start. I equally loved Harry, Mouse and especially Hades - they all really jumped off the page and I really hope they remain part of the team throughout the series.
I'm not going to write any great detail about the plot as, you know, I hate giving spoilers - but suffice to say that I was really impressed with the way the storylines interweaved and had me making theories about what was going on, but then doubting myself and changing my mind. Although I had suspicions early on, I still suspected many others along the way as the twists and turns came and I didn't have a clue about motive. This kept me guessing right until the end.
The main thing I love about PJ's writing is how easy it is to read and how much fun I have throughout the book. There's always a good level of humour threaded through the book and this breaks up the tension of the investigations and darker side of the plot.
I think that this is a brilliant introduction to what will be a great cosy mystery series and I can't wait to add the rest of the series to my PJ library. Am already looking forward to what Tanya and the team get involved in next....
This is one of your classic lovable cozy mysteries. We follow Tanya as she finds herself in an old terraced 1970s house after going through a pretty rough time dealing with depression, the loss of her job and also a divorce.
She is determined to get on with her life and make the best of things so she makes the decision to turn part of the house into a vintage furniture shop. Thankfully, she has a fair bit of support around her and things look as though they are going well
Then in classic cozy mystery style an old schoolmate is found dead at Tanya's home, things look suspicious and seemingly nothing is making much sense!
We meet a cast of fun and interesting characters who carry the story along nicely, keeping the reader engaged and entertained throughout. Tanya our main lady is very likable from the word go, she is sweet and relatable and there is a certain vulnerability about her which makes her come across as very delicate and sensitive.
Overall I found this to be an awesome cozy mystery and I can’t wait to check out the second book in this series!
Deadly Return: An English small town cozy mystery. This is Book One in "The Seacastle Mysteries." Tanya has just got divorced and she's busy moving into her new but old terraced house. This is where she meets Harry Fletcher, he was clearing the house next door out. We also meet Hades at this time, I'll let you find out about Hades yourself. Tanya owns a little vintage furniture shop in town, which Harry can help her with. Melanie, an old school friend is found at the bottom of the stairs, the police think she's fell, but Tanya knows different., something isn't adding up. Tanya was once an investigator journalist, so she knows there's more to this than everyone thinks. What will she find out and why was Melanie at the bottom of the stairs? I've read a few of P,J, Skinner's book and she's never disappointed me, and this is another one of her great writing skills. I loved the plot and the pace it flowed with.
Deadly Return is a cosy mystery set in a small town. I love the main character of Tanya. She’s had a bit of a rough time of it - coming out of a period of depression and also a messy divorce - so she’s an extremely relatable and entertaining main character. She used to be an investigative journalist and when her old school friend dies, she can’t help but start to wonder if it wasn’t an accident. I love all the other characters like her step son, Mouse and her ‘friend’ Harry. I really want to visit her shop and have tea and cake at the cafe upstairs ‘The Vintage’. This is the first book in the series and I am looking forward to reading more.
I received a gifted copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.
‘Deadly Return’ is a brilliant start to PJ Skinner’s new cosy crime series! I am a huge fan of her Sam Harris series and I couldn't wait to pick this one up and it didn't disappoint. It came along at an opportune time as I have begun to get more into cosy crime and this has all the hallmarks of turning into a great series! I think this is PJ’s best book so far and I am already craving a return to Seacastle!
Tanya Bove, a former investigative journalist is adjusting to life as a newly divorced woman. But she has her shop to keep her going where she restores vintage furniture and has the support of her colourful friends. At a house clearance she bumps into her old school friend Mel and they renew their friendship. But when Mel is found dead at the bottom of the stairs in that same house Tanya is determined to figure what has happened. The police, where her ex is the lead detective, have written it off as an accident but Tanya thinks there is more into it than it initially seems. As Tanya looks into the Conrad family she discovers a web of lies and secrets. But will she be able to uncover the truth before it is too late…
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and what made it was the strength of the characters and their development through the book! I instantly liked Tanya as a person and could imagine myself being friends with her. She has a core of steel and I like that she has overcome mental health issues and come out a more resilient person for them! Also, the relationship that she formed with Mouse was amazing to read. I love those two as a pairs of detectives. When you add in ‘friend/love interest’ Harry you have a crack team ready to go!
I was so caught up in the plot that I devoured this book in one sitting! It was incredibly well-written, plotted and the characters sparkled off the pages. Plus, there were a lot of mentions of cake. They seem like my people. I was hooked from the start and I didn't want the book to end. Thankfully I do know the next one won't be that long in coming!
Recently divorced Tanya Bowe is starting over in the seaside town of Seacastle. She reconnects with an old schoolmate, Melanie Conrad, but the friendship doesn’t have much time to flourish before Mel’s body is discovered at the foot of the stairs at Conrad House. It is assumed by the police that she accidentally fell down the stairs. But former investigative journalist Tanya feels that it probably isn’t that simple. So she begins investigating on her own. The Conrad family has some secrets, but they go deeper than one would imagine. Tanya’s progress puts her in more danger. Will she be able to determine who killed Mel?
I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this story and look forward to more from the author. I’m definitely hooked on cozy mysteries!
Tanya Bowe is recovering from a triple whammy. A lost job, a divorce and clinical depression. Her ex is a dective and she used to be an investigative journalist so looking past the surface is in her blood. Shortly after reuniting with an old school chum she finds her dead at the bottom of the stairs of a house she is to help empty out. When the police are quick to call it an accident her instincts say no and she, along with her friends look into the case. Many smart and interesting characters make this a good mystery and I look forward to meeting them again. Disclaimer I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Excellent portrayal of a middle aged lady who was a high flying investigative reporter who has for various reasons had a collapse ....and lost her job and her marriage (maybe one of the reasons she has such low self esteem). This story is not only a mystery but a brilliant study of how female friendship means not only is Tanya back into investigating but she has a small thriving business and she also may find love again. A great read. I hope to have more stories with Tanya. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Deadly Return: A British cozy mystery is the first installment of The Seacastle Mysteries series written by PJ Skinner. In this intriguing cozy murder mystery, Tanya walks the fine line between ultimate discovery and intentional danger, guided by her unwavering determination to expose the real truth and find true justice for her long lost friend.
A well-written and enjoyable story with great characters. It is a cozy mystery story which you could read on your bed with a cup of tea beside you. This is the first time I am reading a book by PJ Skinner and I absolutely enjoyed it. I finished reading it in two sittings. Also, the relationship that she formed with Mouse was amazing to read. I love those two as a pairs of detectives.

A delightful start to a new cozy mystery series. This is an interesting murder mystery with a wonderful light "will they/won't they" side-plot. I loved Tanya and Harry's interaction and am looking forward to reading more of this series, especially for Tanya and Harry's story.
This could have been about just another amateur female detective but the writer gave it so much more. The heroine was so down to earth and very likable. Her ex husband gave an interesting twist on things. The other characters, including the cat, had lots of fun traits
Deadly Return is a fantastic addition to the cosy mystery genre.
Tanya is such a great character. I instantly warmed to her and found her to be very endearing. I particularly loved that she is a technophobe as it really is the little details that make characters so likeable. I enjoyed that there was such a great group of characters in the book.
I loved Tanya's journey as she navigated her way to the truth because it made for such a fun plot to follow. The English seaside town was the perfect backdrop for the book.
If you love cosy mysteries then this is definitely for you.
Thank you Love Books Tours for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
I can't think of when I've read a better cosy mystery, a very readable page turner. Tanya a former investigative journalist, is getting back on her feet after clinical depression ruined her marriage, assisted by a diverse bunch of quirky girlfriends. Enter her champions, an unlikely trio; the wounded warrior who's also a widower, a scruffy teen computer nerd, riddled with angst and the cantankerous tomcat who adopts them. Together they pull a motive out of the confusing tangle and finish by identifying the killer ahead of Tanya's ex, who is the copper in charge of the case. He's forced to concede she's still got what it takes and I can't wait to see what she'll do next.
Many thanks to Love Book Tours for letting me be s stop on the Book Tour for this fantastic cosy crime mystery!
First and foremost, the characters absolutely made this book for me. Tanya has a support crew of various friends supporting her through her investigations, as well as ups and downs in her personal life. They are all very different and brilliantly described.
I also enjoyed the picturesque seaside location - a nice contrast to all the crime going on!
Cosy crime is not usually my first choice when looking for a crime book to read, but I enjoyed getting to know Tanya and her friends so much through the author's skilful writing that I'll make an exception for this series!
Thanks to the author, and Love Book Tours for the eARC of this book.
I actually got this book free as a Kindle version from the author because she wanted early reviews.
I found this book to be very engaging from the very start. The way she introduced the characters at the beginning of the book draws the reader in and you want to know more straightaway. There were so many twists and turns in the plot that I would defy anybody to guess the final outcome! It was a great murder mystery! Having read this first book in this new series I am now hooked and hope to get the second book in the series when it is published!
A book that gripped me almost from the start. Late night as I had to finish it. Tanya, newly divorced & not liking her new life, but moving into her new home meets someone who buys house lots & she goes into the house next door & discovers some things she can sell in her Vintage shop, which she needs to make profit from now. At another house clearance she meets an old school friend, who gives her good advice about making part of her shop into a cafe. Then, sadly this friend dies. An accident say the police, but, Tanya isn’t at all sure. Much against her ex husband’s wishes, he’s the Chief inspector looking into it, Tanya insists on delving. Then Mouse her ex’s son from a previous marriage arrives to live with her & opens up modern technology to her. As things seem to go from bad to worse all gets sorted by the end of this book. In the house next door they discovered a cat shut in a laundry basket. Tanya calls him Hades. He shuns her but loves Mouse. A really good read.
I recently read this book, Deadly Return by PJ Skinner, as part of a book tour. I really loved this cozy mystery, and will definitely be reading book two in The Seacastle Mysteries series.
Recently divorced Tanya, has opened up a vintage shop that she also turns in to a cafe. She bumps in to an old school friend recently returned to the area, and it’s not long before this friend Mel turns up dead. Tanya’s ex husband is a detective in the police so is against her interfering in this case and rules it as a tragic accident. Tanya becomes super sleuth with the help of her friends and only they can solve the murder.
If mysteries are your sort of go to read I highly recommend
This high quality cozy mystery is fresh and unique. With Hades the cat, Mouse the EX stepson, and a wide variety of interesting characters, there's lots going on in these pages. Good fun!
Tanya has just been replaced by her husband with a younger version of herself. She has moved from her nice house to a two up/two down, in a shadier part of town. She is also starting a vintage shop to try and support herself. She meets an old school friend, and shortly thereafter the friend dies. Tanya and her friends are sure something dodgy is going on and decide to investigate.
The premise of this series has potential. The lead protagonist was once an investigative journalist who let her craft lie dormant as she struggled with depression. She has since left her husband and moved to a small house and is planning on running a vintage shop. She has two friends who are close to her, and they give her support on both professional and personal fronts. In the very beginning, Tanya befriends someone who gives her access to estate sales. He is also a possible future love interest, something that took away from the story itself, I felt. There is also the ex and his son from an earlier relationship who feature in Tanya's life. Amidst all this, Tanya is always open to helping people, and this leads an old schoolmate into her life. This schoolmate soon exits the scene, and only Tanya wants to hold on to the possibility that it was not a natural accident. The mystery part of this was well done. I found it easy to follow and clear in the direction that the plot was taking. I thought the personal issues were one too many, and each left a little for the next book, meaning almost all of them were unresolved by the end. The women and their friendships and support system felt refreshing, without too much unexpected drama. Fans of this genre will find a lot to enjoy in this book (and possibly the series). I will need to read the next to confirm if I like this style of narration or not. I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
The cover photo of the book is really intriguing and that is what peaked my interest into reading it. I am actually glad that I read it and I am quite satisfied with it.
It is a very cozy mystery story which you could read on your bed with a cup of coffee beside you. This is the first time I am reading a book by PJ Skinner and I absolutely enjoyed it. I finished reading it in two sittings. It was an Unputdownable experience for me where even if I wanted to I just couldn't. The story is action-packed and I loved reading all the adventures and twists.
The writing skills of the author are very mesmerizing and the Storytelling Is Really great. The twists have been put on all the right places without unnecessary drama. The character development was also very nice to read. Overall I really loved it.
I will definitely recommend this book to all the mystery lovers. Grab your copy today guys. It is available on Kindle Unlimited as well.
This, IMHO, was a great read. I liked the details and interactions with other characters. Liked the teeny bit put in near the beginning about her friend which you hear no more about. Definitely need to read on an find out what happens.
This was a fun, twisty start to a new cozy mystery series, and I devoured it pretty fast.
Cozy crime/mystery is my favorite genre. When I need a good escape, take me to a small town with an “accidental”/amateur detective and it’s fantastic. I think it’s because cozy mysteries tend to mix so many other genres – crime fiction, mystery/suspense, thrillers, and romance – all in one neat, little package. And it’s a story where there’s definitely murder, it’s the central plot, but somehow it’s also kind of beside the point. The brilliant writer P.J. Skinner has laid the foundation for a lovely series of cozy mysteries that will take up an honored place alongside your favorites – whoever that might be.
I really enjoyed how Skinner took some of the cozy mystery cliches/tropes and flipped them on their head. I won’t say which ones, because that would be spoiling the fun. But if you’re a regular reader of cozies you will absolutely recognize the flirting and dancing around tropes. I thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters introduced, and look forward to getting to know more of them. I especially enjoyed her ex-stepson, Mouse, and her new will-they, won’t-they love interest.
The author developed a lovely assortment of friends and acquaintances, but also managed to cast a pall on them that was incredibly appropriate for a main character recovering from a bout of major depression. I really appreciated the positive mental health representation and look forward to seeing how this is handled in the future. We need more of this in our media, and this is a great example. I was less pleased by the “Fat Fighters” group, but unfortunately it is a reality, especially among middle aged women. And it was actually handled quite well. While there was some implied fatphobia, it wasn’t excessively blatant, but of the sort our society as a whole needs to work on.
I’ll definitely check out more of Skinner's books, and will certainly follow up with this series.
Tanya Bowe nee Carter, has struck up a business partnership with Harry Fletcher to do house clearances to help stock her vintage shop. She is getting over her recent divorce from DCI George Carter and a breakdown but she likes Harry. He’s getting over the death of his wife Cathy but they have a laugh together. It’s on one of the house clearances that she meets her old school mate Melanie Conrad. She is even more shocked when she turns up dead, at the bottom of the stairs at Conrad House with a broken neck. The police decide that Mel’s death was an accident and that she fell down the stairs but Tanya is not convinced and decides to look into it on her own. Harry agrees to go to the wake with her and they mingle, finding out some little tit bits of information.
Tanya was interested to learn that Mel’s mum died when she was aged four and her dad, Geoffrey remarried a year later to Fiona. Tanya always thought Mel’s mum died from cancer but it turned out it was an accident in the garden, she hit her head on the rocks in the rose garden. Two accidental deaths? That seemed even more fishy to Tanya so she spoke to Flo and Flo got her the original file from the station for the police case. They returned Mel’s stuff to Greg, her husband and he gave them a photo album of when Mel was a child. Tanya thanked Greg for the album. Tanya was curious as to why Mel ran away when she was sixteen and left everyone thinking she was dead.
Why did Mel run away from home? Was Mel’s death an accident or was she pushed? Is Tanya putting herself in danger by investigating the case?
This was an interesting cosy crime mystery to read and I quite enjoyed reading it. The plot was a good one and it’s very well written. It’s book one in a new series so we are getting to know the characters and they all seem really nice and likeable. I will read the next book in the series.
Deadly Return is a new cozy series starter by P.J. Skinner. Released 9th June 2023, it's 284 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free. The other two books in the series are also available on KU, and a fourth is due out at the end of February 2024.
The author is prolific and talented, with several series, spanning several genres. This one features a former investigative journalist in a small seaside town setting. Protagonist Tanya is appealing and sympathetic. Her loyalty and tenacity make her relatable and interesting. The author is particularly good at descriptive prose and this is an easy and engaging read.
The background, mystery, denouement, and resolution were well written and readable. No clunky dialogue or glaring plot holes or inconsistencies to yank readers out of their suspension of disbelief. With the series available on KU, it would make a nice binge or buddy read. High quality new series.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This is the first book I've read by this author. It was enjoyable and easy to read. It took a couple of chapters, though. I couldn't decide if I liked Tanya or not. She's newly divorced, going from living in a ritzy, fashionable house to what she now calls a hovel, although the more she claims her new house by making it her own, the more self assured she seems. She was quite "mouse-like" in the beginning, most likely from being married to a man who treated her like she was a featherbrain. She had been an investigative journalist, but after a bout with depression, she seems to have lost most of her self-worth. Then along comes the murder of a woman she was becoming friends with, and that gives her a goal. She'll find the killer. She meets a man she likes and who likes her, although neither is ready for a new relationship at the time. She gains some self-confidence. She expands her "hobby" into a real business. She also gains a stepson, Mouse, who has nowhere to go since his father kicked him out, and she finds that she really loves being a stepmother. She'd also gained a cat, Hades, who loves everyone but her. Tanya is a far from perfect person, but she became much more likable the further I read. She's loyal to her friends and her family (even if they sometimes don't deserve it). She's funny, loving, goofy, vulnerable, and forgiving. She's a better person than she knows. I liked reading about Tanya, Harry and Mouse. I think I will keep reading.
This is one of those lovely cosy crime mysteries that you need to put a few hours on one side for, prime the coffee machine, make sure that you have plenty of cake to hand and dive in.
As this is the first book in The Seacastle Mysteries I was intrigued as to how the main characters would be introduced and how they would work together to create a thread that will move forwards throughout the series. I was not disappointed as Tanya, regardless of what her ex husband thinks, is a strong character and she has laid the foundations to develop herself even further as the series progresses. She is a person that you warm to straight away and as she gets drawn into the mystery and different relationships you find yourself reading the situations as she does whilst she is trying to unravel the background behind the so-called accidental deaths.
The story draws you in, and you will need to refill your coffee cup and cut another slice of cake whilst you turn the pages, uncovering details of what Tanya discovers, with a little help from her friends.
If the rest of the series carries on like it has started in Deadly Return I, for one, am going to be hooked.
