From Within the Woods

Rate this book
The woods do not scare Elena—even if they did have a reputation for being cursed.

At least, that was the bravery she had when her father was still alive. Now, accused of being a witch by the village that she once held dear, Elena realizes that going into the woods clouded with superstition may be her only chance at survival. However, once she steps foot past the threshold of the forest, she wonders if perhaps her village had been right about the dangers that lurk within. With what has been taken from her, she is left to hope that her promise to be brave is enough to help her survive.

~

As clouds darkened the sky and prepared to cleanse the earth with rain, Dmitri could feel something different about the forest. He felt the subtle shift in the trees - a sense of urgency that he had never felt before. He could feel it inside of his chest, like a bird stirring against his ribcage. Helplessly drawn to the source, Dmitri found himself moving as if it had called to him. All he knew was that, as soon as he crossed paths with whatever it was, his life would never be the same.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The author took elements from folklore, carefully weaving a story filled with magic, vivid descriptions and characters that felt extremely realistic.

From the moment I picked the book up, I was immediately transferred into the story. The lyrical writing is done brilliantly. The characters motivations and line of thinking is done so well the reader gets to truly understand each and every one of them, including the ones meant to be the villains. There is absolutely no telling rather than showing,no overpowered MC's and certainly no cartoon like villains. Every character has a purpose that the reader gets to see be explored in depth. The magic that both the Mc herself and the male love interest use, along with the training needed for it to advance are shown. The antagonist in this book and his reasoning behind his actions is also written about in the best way possible.

I also absolutely love the themes of misogyny that this book contained.

Elena (the mc) and Dmitri (her love interest) also make for a wonderful pairing. Throughout the book I did see them as soulmates. The way they complete, respect, love and help each other was truly beautiful to read about.

I truly feel as if my review is not doing this book enough justice, you simply need to pick it up and see for yourself why it's so special.

I wanted to love this but alas, it was not meant to be 😞

The first big problem I had while reading this book was the usage of very modern vocabulary (when the story was clearly set in a far away past where words like "okay" and "panic attack" were definitely not a thing) as well as the long info dump monologues... Even the inner thoughts of our two main characters felt like a self-help book quotes rather than an actual way these characters process everything that is happening to them. Speaking of the main characters, both Dmitri and Elena felt like cardboards to me; nothing made them stand out and everything they spoke/thought felt like they were reading it off a pamphlet or a tumlr post from 2010🤷🏻‍♀️

And the beginning was so good, so so good! Both cruel and beautiful, it made me think I finally found something on par with Katherine Arden's "Winternight" trilogy but the moment we got Dmitri's pov it all kinda went to.. well, shite. I don't know anything about this author or their background but gosh, this whole story reads like it was written by someone who knows nothing about slavic mythogy and folklore except that there is a baba yaga involved (also the whole baba yaga take in this book made me roll my eyes to the heaven and back)

But yeah, this wasn't very good neither writing nor story wise and I feel kinda exhausted after finally making myself finish reading it (and I'm clearly in the minorty with my opinion lol)

(thank you booksirens for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review)

From Within the Woods is an enchanting, emotional and beautiful story of Elena and Dmitiri. The folklore woven through the book is captivating. I thoroughly loved this book.

The development of the relationship between the MC’s is sweet and full of caring/understanding from both of them. There is a slow but steady build to the relationship as you learn about their stories with them. When Dmitri reveals the truth about himself, I started the chapter with tears of sadness which then turned into tears of happiness for Elena’s acceptance of him for what he is. Throughout the book they treat each other as equals, never holding the other down, supporting each other, and always believing in each other’s strength. They both help each other process their grief and trauma from the pasts in order to move to their futures.

The “villain” was written perfectly as an influential leader who uses the fear of the misunderstood and unknown to spread hatred towards Elena. Patryk’s entry into the story was a welcome change to how some people can learn to change their views and become agents of change for their communities. In the bonus chapter I really enjoyed reading more about him after the events of the main story.

A lyrical story about healing and finding your own strength.

4.2/5⭐️
.5/5🌶️

Tropes, etc.:
Hidden powers
Hurt Comfort
Magic Lessons
Pining
Guardians of the Forest

Elena's story is one that spoke to the times and reflected a lot of historical attitudes towards folk practitioners. Her treatment while being difficult to read, was extremely well done and Dmitri tending to her gave me big ole heart eyes. She was able to heal and recognize her own power despite changes to her physical ability.

Dmitri was everything. A generous person and faithful to a T. Their mutual respect and love for each other was really sweet to read.

It gave me some "For the Wolf" by Hannah Whitten vibes, which I'm definitely here for.

The fact that the trees love to gossip too out a huge smile on my face.

One thing I struggled with was some of the pacing in the middle of the book. Some moments felt quite drawn out and I struggled to place the "when" between Herrick and Elena's events at times.

Overall, a very enjoyable book! I hope this author writes more Slavic informed stories because I want and need them!

From Within The Woods was quite easily the most deep and heartfelt romance I have ever read, every single moment between our protagonists feels so real, the talent of Inman is undeniable! I think Elena and Dmitri are my favourite literature couple now just for how earth shatteringly strong their love and devotion is!

Inman handled the gritty issues of life tactfully, from blatant cruelty to feminism in the earlier ages to hesitant superstition we see realistic thoughts and feelings from even the most minor characters throughout the book.

My only complaint was that the time rewind that tells us how Elena ended up in the woods felt a little monotonous at times, giving obligatory information so the text made sense, but that wasn’t overbearing, just occasional.

Overall I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a healthy sense of adventure and well written romance!

I had never heard of this book, but was immediately interested once I saw the cover. And I’m so glad I got a chance to read it!

From Within the Woods is a beautiful, cozy romance filled with witches, folklore, a swoon worthy MMC, and many mythical creatures I haven’t read much about before. I felt particularly connected to Elena, with all the current events surrounding feminism and women’s freedoms, it felt like I was healing along with her. There is no spice but the romance is lovely. Dmitri is so charming and wonderful.

There are also bonus chapters at the end where we get to delve a bit deeper into a few characters and even meet some new ones!

This had a great use of Slavic Folklore and I was hooked on the romance aspect. It was a unique concept and did everything that I was hoping for. It had a great description going on and it delivered in what was promised. I enjoyed the way T. Inman wrote this and am excited to read more from them.

"As the smell of fresh bread from the bakery began to waft in the air, two of the men looked at each other with a nod and stood up to leave. Herrick tightened his fingers around the neck of his bottle but did not tear his eyes away from the forest. Eventually, the other men left too. Some might have muttered sympathetic encouragement to Herrick, but he could not hear them over the ringing in his ears. Something was wrong. Where were they?"

CW: death, violence

Read via BookSirens

As much as I love folklore and mythology, I can’t say that I have a wide knowledge of retellings/variations of the less widely taught stories. I’ve been trying to find new stories outside of the more familiar Greek/Roman pantheon and Grimm’s fairytales. So, when I saw a witchy romance based on Slavic folklore, I decided I needed to check it out. Best. Choice. Ever.

Elena lived a peaceful, calm life in her village, but after her father’s death, everything began to fall apart. Accused by her village of being a witch, her remaining family slaughtered, Elena’s only hope is the cursed forest to the North. But the forest has earned its haunted reputation, and help and healing comes from an unexpected source.

I should start off by clarifying that, though this is certainly a romance, it’s not spicy. It’s the exact opposite of spicy. It’s ‘here’s 57 cavities and a tub of marshmallow fluff’ sweet. And I love it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a level 5 spicy book, but everything about his romance was so sweet and pure that it just made me smile. Flawless execution, 10/10 adorableness.

As sweet as the romance is, both the MMC and FMC have been through hell, and the story doesn’t shy away from that fact. They’re both traumatized, broken people and the story makes it very clear that, although they can heal together, they can’t heal each other. It’s a wonderfully healthy take on trauma and relationships without getting too into the nitty-gritty realism that can sometimes bog down a work of fiction.

The actual characters are amazing and I love everything about them. Elena is sweet and strong and grows so much. The MMC is incredible and gives off a perfect balance of ‘touch her and die’ and ‘I am an actual cinnamon roll, but only for one person.’ Protective and attentive without being overbearing or a total stalker, he adores her simply for existing a being herself, and I am here for it.

Plot-wise, this isn’t the most action-oriented book. Things definitely happen, and there’s clear progression, but a good chunk of the story is just about healing and growing. Normally this would put me right to sleep, but the way it was written and the genuine affection and warmth that radiate from the characters made it an incredibly enjoyable journey. Watching Elena develop and watching her and the MMC fall in love was more than enough to have me devouring this book whole. This was such a sweet, wholesome read without ignoring the fact that sometimes life has some really ugly bits.

This story brought me back to what I loved most about watching the Ancient Magus’s Bride, but with a twist. More darkness, but still that soft, cozy story about acceptance and love.

While I wish there was a content/trigger warning list (especially with how sometimes graphic some of the gory scenes are), this book was enjoyable. The prose was lyrical at times, the exposition beautiful rather than overly repetitive. This would make a wonderful audiobook.

A New kind of Fairy Tale

From Within the woods is a beautiful story of overcoming prejudice, pain, and self-doubt. It is also a tale of love -- for others, the environment, and oneself. Running the gamut from sweet to horrifying, the author pulled no punches in the telling of this tale.

I loved the elements of Russian and Polish folklore. The author had beautiful things to say about life, the magic of our world, and choosing your best path forward despite past difficulties. Elena and Dmitri are marvelous, multifaceted characters.

Another round of editing with an eye toward misplaced homonyms (i.e. lulled where it should be lolled, or weary in place of wary), typos, and tightening the language would make this book a true Five Star tale.

All in all, I highly recommend this book. T. Inman is author worth following, and whom I hope to see more from in the future.

I found this story simply amazing. The basis in Slavic folklore, and the interpretation of magic. The characters, well rounded and flawed in their way. Growing from the horrors that were inflicted on them.they build a life together, not without many obstacles.

-- My reviews are generally a messy line of my thoughts throughout the book. --

You have my attention.

Ride or die family, love them for that.

Elena has never done anything wrong in her life and I stand by that.

Dmitri, you have my love already.

There’s a lot of repetition around the idea that Elena is stubborn and Dmitri doesn’t know how to do a lot of things that might be considered normal to know around when they meet and Elena is healing.

Also just want to say that I have a digital copy but the cover is beau-ti-ful.

What a beautiful way to explain magic. The world-building is absolutely wonderful and intricate; I especially like Dmitri and Elena’s training. The chapter on the village was a wonderful way to make me feel anticipation and worry for what is to come.

“Then prove it.” I love Elena so much.

“I am not a creature that one stops to marvel at…” I love Dmitri too gosh-dang.

“And I will love you with the power of a thousand Suns if you only choose to be my Moon.” These two have to be one of my favorite couples ever; they’re just so CUTE!

“Yet it was humans who dragged me to the forest to die, and it is a witch who is dragging you from the forest to live.” You tell ‘em, Elena!

We are told Patryk’s name before he introduces himself.

We stan Patryk.

“Tell me your certainties, and I will tell you mine.” What a lovely line.

“There is not exactly a handbook for what happens when you shove your heart inside of your soulmate’s body.” That has got to be one of the funniest dang lines I’ve ever read in my life.

Heck yeah, pet bear.

I generally shy away from pregnancy at the end, but I find myself liking this one. I would have liked a short piece on Dmitri's reaction, but it was cute. And thank the stars Elena didn't lose her magic--I would've been furious.

The little short stories at the end are great. I love that I got to read more about June and Silas, Patryk, and especially about Elena meeting Esther.

All in all, this is one of the best stories I've reviewed so far. It was cozy and lovely, and I will definitely be looking into getting a physical copy for my personal library.

There were a few places that I found weird, particularly when we meet Patryk. His name is mentioned before he ever introduces himself, which I believe might be a brief oversight. The big fight scene, as well, was a little all over the place. I felt there was a lot I was missing. There was also no physical separation when it jumped between the villagers, Patryk, and Elena's part during that big fight. At one point, you're reading about the villagers, and then the next line is Elena. It's not a big issue, but it is one I noticed.

(I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.)

This book drew me in with its beautiful cover, the map, the first sentence, and a promise of Slavic folklore. I am so sad because I had such high hopes for this book and loved the main idea. Throughout the story, there were a few elements I liked separately. But those were drowned in the notes I took of all the things that were wrong. First of all, the Slavic folklore representation was poor, and other than a few creatures (the most well-known), that were thrown into the story, I easily forgot we were in the Slavic setting. I'm Slavic, and also a fan of Katherine Arden and Naomi Novik, who spoiled me with their good writing. The magic system and the world-building were lacking, too.

The characters all had the same voice, and they had no depth. There was too much trying to say the right thing on the author's part, which left the characters shallow and predictable. I cringed at all the conversations the main characters had, and absolutely hated (I'm sorry to word it like this) the nicknames. Also, in not even one scene did I feel the chemistry between the MCs.

There's so much more to say, but why I continued reading the book if I disliked it so much, and when I could've DNF it, is because I recognized the potential it had. The main plotline is original, and such a fun idea to explore, I love the fact that the author chose a Slavic setting for it, but the whole time I felt like I was reading the first draft that has a long way ahead before getting published.

I am so sad about this. It's a really promising book and it has the right basis, but it deserved more time for editing and development.

Wow wow wow 👨‍🍳💋🤌

Let's start this off right. Thank you, BookSirens, for another enthralling book in exchange for my honest opinion. For whatever reason. I won't question, thank you! ✨️

This novel was somehow able to perfectly capture both dark and cozy emotions for readers to feel while going through the story. 👏

First, you've got Elena, who lives in a small, quiet village with her family. She grew up on the simple life and stories, stories about anything and everything, some to be believed, and some not. A quiet life in a quiet village until an unhealthy fear of witches starts to make a fuss among the townspeople. Our FMC Elena ends up traveling through the forest, the one said to be cursed and feared, until her path is crossed by Dmitri, the guardian of the forest. Their tale goes on, and where the magic takes them, you wouldn't believe.

This story based on ancient folklore is both dark in plot and cozy in characters; something I never thought would be the perfect combo but believe me when I say that it is! This is a book that will stick with you for quite a while. If you find yourself forgetting little details later, you'll find yourself pulling the book off the shelf for a re-read after that.

I won't list tropes for this one, that doesn't suit the books vibe. However, I will tell you to read From Within the Woods and that you can thank me later ❤️

"It would have been a lovely evening had it not been for the unfortunate circumstance of my death."

From Within the Woods is a lovely tale of healing and self-acceptance, filled with elements of Slavic folklore and an enchanting magic system. I loved that it included myths and folklore that aren't as commonly seen in current popular fantasy.

"You are an insufferable wonderful reprieve from my darkness."
I really enjoyed the prose and lovely writing, while still including elements of gore. I appreciated that every character had their demons and none were depicted as perfect.

And of course I have to mention the beautiful cover!

2.5/5 stars, rounded up

This book is about a young girl maimed and cast out from her village, accused of being a witch, and her relationship with the secretive forest dweller who takes her in. The writing in this book is a tad unpolished, but I loved the creativity of the magic in this world. I wish it could have been explored further; most of the magic is explained via exposition dumps from one character, but there are a few very touching moments where we get to experience the story rather than have it told to us. The writing uses a great deal of telling instead of showing, leading to a very dull middle of the story. The pace picks up at the end and finishes on a high note, but it took a while to get there.

The romance was not my favorite part because we didn't get much introspection or conflict from either character; it felt a bit stilted like the characters always had the perfect thing to say ready to go without thinking about it. The trauma bonding was done well however, each character had a well suited backstory for their romance.

A great fairy tale-ish romance about self-discovery, healing, and the power of love.

Set in a world filled with danger and enchantment, this captivating tale follows Elena, a young girl who, through resilience and strength, overcomes the harrowing effects of violence and abuse to find healing and love in the arms of Dmitri, a mysterious man she encounters deep within the magical woods.

I loved Elena. Her growth throughout the story is truly inspiring, as she learns to reclaim her power and find her voice in a world that has tried to silence her. Her journey serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for redemption and love.

One of the standout aspects of this novel is the portrayal of the magical woods, which feels like a character in its own right.

With its compelling characters, lush world-building, and powerful themes, this book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a captivating blend of romance, fantasy, and personal growth.

I read the standard edition as well as this Deluxe edition. The story from the original is still really great with the Slavic folklore inspired setting. I loved the witches and references to the folklore creatures like Leshys, Domovoy, and Rusalka (And Chorts in one of the bonus stories!). I also thought that the relationship between Dmitri and Elena was incredibly refreshing to see and how they work through their own issues by each other's sides.

The bonus stories definitely added some extra world building and flavoring compared to my last post. I loved the introduction of a new witch, the wholesome moment, and then that hilarious side story with the side character Patryk. Him grappling with a domovoy? Fricken gold, and had me laughing so hard.

I loved the cover for both stories but I also like the details with this one and the more Slavic feel to it. And the map was a nice touch.

This was like Beauty and the Beast meets the Ancient Magnus Bride with a twist. I loved how the author made these stories their own. Weaving in parts of mythology and story to create this world. I loved the unexpected parts.

I loved the world/ forest, the concept, the characters (individually), the magic system, and themes touched on in this book. The first half of the book was great. It pulled me in and kept me hooked and interested. Then, the romance started. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the plot overall.

But the romance felt 2 dimensional to me. I didn't connect to these characters as a romance. I understand why it needed to be a romance, and I loved the concept. It just fell a little short for me personally.

Still recommend this book, and I really enjoyed reading it.

Thank you to Booksirens and the author for an eARC of this title.

The story of Elena and Dmitiri in From Within the Woods is enchanting, moving, and beautiful. The book is full of captivating folklore. This book was a total hit with me. The improvement of the connection between the MC's is sweet and loaded with mindful/understanding from the two of them. As you learn about their experiences with them, the relationship develops gradually but steadily. I started the chapter with tears of sadness when Dmitri revealed the truth about himself, which turned into tears of joy when Elena accepted him for who he is. They treat each other as equals throughout the book, supporting each other whenever possible, and always believing in the strength of each other. In order to move on to their futures, they both assist one another in processing their grief and trauma from the past.

I am absolutely honored to have been able to read an ARC of this book. I absolutely ADORED it. I finished it in two days. The characters were incredible. I loved Dmitri and Elena. Their relationship was magical. The way they both grew and they matured. It was captivating. They experienced trauma and worked through their grief. Dmitris heart is maybe what I loved the most. They way he stopped the world for her. There was so much depth in this book and I will never stop thinking about it. They changed the world from the better. They accepted their darkness and didn’t let it define them. You get to choose your life and your truth. We all have our own darkness and it’s up to us what we do with it. A few minor typos but it didn’t at all deter from the story.

I really like this book. I’m an avid reader. I love reading fantasy genre’s the most.

Even though I found it difficult to read in some parts, due to the cruelty and viciousness bestowed from ignorant fearful and intolerant people, it was tempered with reading about the great enduring precious love between the protagonist couple. Human beings, uninformed, uneducated and scared are much worse, more violent, more sadistic than any other species on the earth. The only things that very sensitive people like myself can cling desperately onto is real magic and real love. This is a sad and beautiful book.

Beautiful mythology inspired story, that is speaking about cruel history of witch hunts and misogyny, that our predecessors had once witnessed.
Although this book gave me the Beauty and the Beast vibes quite a few times, the story is beautifully written with no black and white villains and heroes. Just a simple humans corrupted by the world.
This allows us to fully embrace all of the characters and make us think, whether we'd be any different.

The story puts a unique twist on the Slavic folklore that I am familiar with. There are familiar things and then also the author's interpretations of some of the creatures and it creates a rich world w/ charming characters. Even the side characters felt like they had their own sense of life to them.

This book draws you in and gives you an idea of what love can do in the face of adversary and hardship. I really enjoyed reading this story and am going to recommend it to my book club!

Absolutely in love with this book. While I don't tend to enjoy romance in books and I was slightly put off when finding it was apart of this book. While there's clearly romance between the main characters, it's not the whole plot, which is why I absolutely love this story.

The change in both the main characters was amazing to read. They both grew amazingly and hearing things from both of their perspectives almost had me in tears. Will definitely be recommending this book to anyone who will listen.

I was so freaking excited to read the book. From the moment I saw the cover I was sold. The actual story really lived up to the premise which made me really excited!! I loved how Elena and Dimitri slowly developed their relationship, it was so beautiful that I was rooting for them the whole time. The plot unfolded quite nicely and some parts made me emotional (iykyk).

Solid 3 stars. (Reminder- 3 stars is a good book in my opinion but not a book I'd necessarily read again)

I'm going to keep this one brief. The plot itself was solid and had great points to it. I didn't really connect with the main characters which made it harder for me to love the book. The world building was great. Just the character piece was a struggle. Overall, I'd recommend this to others.
