As Holo and Lawrence begin the final leg of their journey, Lawrence decides to accompany Holo to her ancient home of Yoitsu, if only to forestall their parting just a bit longer. Boarding a ship from the port of Lenos (much to the chagrin of the wisewolf, who is none too fond of water!), the pair's fate becomes entangled with that of a boy named Col, whose tale of his circumstances - combined with the gossip of the sailors - leads to a shocking revelation about Holo's homeland!

As I read these light novels, I’m constantly struck by just how much I’m annoyed by Holo and Lawrence’s alternatingly sweet and unnecessarily fraught, low-key, high-maintenance relationship.

It’s just so…. Nothing I’d ever want to put up with in real life. I would have expressed my real emotions, from either pov, by the first freaking novel.

But, alas, that’s conflict, no?

So annoying.

The rest of the story was interesting, but sometimes this romance is too much.

In Summary

Hasekura-sensei mentions in the afterword that this volume “had fewer economic elements,” which I found to be the case. There is a bit of an accounting mystery, but our traveling duo’s lives and funds aren’t directly impacted by that scheme so the story lacks the energy and urgency other volumes have. Still, fans of the series will want to pick up this volume as Lawrence and Holo become entangled with the waif Col, and from the looks of it, he’s going to be a regular in the series.

The Review

Volume 6 is very much a transitional novel in this series. Previous volumes contained standalone business type stories under the larger arc of Holo’s journey home. So when Volume 5 ended with Lawrence swindled by Eve, I anticipated Holo and Lawrence cutting their losses and moving on to a new location and venture. Instead, Volume 6 continues the fur scheme with the two going after Lawrence’s former business partner, and even by the end of this book, the matter of Eve remains to be resolved.

This installment is also transitional in that this is the first time Lawrence and Holo have deliberately detoured from their search for Yoitsu. Up till now, they’ve been traveling steadily north, but having gotten so close to Holo’s homeland, something new has to arise for their journey together to continue. That change comes in the form of a new mission they seize upon after hearing rumors of suspicious Church activities and in the shift in Lawrence and Holo’s relationship.

I should note that Yen Press makes a critical (in my opinion) bit of rewording in Lawrence’s dialogue. In Volume 5′s epilogue, Lawrence kisses Holo’s cheek and says, “I like you,” which felt rather wishy-washy. But in Volume 6, that phrase (which comes up in a moment of reflection) gets translated as, “I love you.” That changes Lawrence’s confession into something much stronger and passionate, which is definitely necessary as the two engage in a not-exactly-lovers’-quarrel in Volume 6. As to the source of the quarrel, it is not surprisingly Lawrence’s fault, and like a new boyfriend blundering through his first relationship, he spends half the book trying to figure out why Holo is mad at him.

Another thing that sets the story apart from the others in the series is that the economics element isn’t as strong. There’s a kind of accounting mystery and some talk about coinage, but it’s more along the lines of a scammer’s tricks than business strategy. Plus, Lawrence isn’t directly involved in this scheme; he’s just trying to puzzle it together to while away the time as he and Holo travel downriver. The really annoying thing is that Hasekura-sensei doesn’t reveal the secret behind the extra chests of copper at the end. (And no, I haven’t been able to figure it out on my own.)

What Hasekura-sensei does give us is a new character in the cast. Originally from the north, the boy Col has his own mission, but he’s the type that’s book smart and street stupid. Lawrence and Holo come across him when he’s at the end of his rope, and when his plight arouses their sympathy, we get to see a hitherto unseen gentler side of Holo. Lawrence, for his part, has fun playing “master” to his “apprentice.” Also, Col, despite his desire to study Church law, has pagan roots and provides an interesting new perspective on the Spice and Wolf world.

This light novel includes the title page, three two-page spreads, and the table of contents printed in color as well as eight black-and-white illustrations. It also comes with a dust jacket that doesn’t match but mimics the cover illustration. (Ayakura’s cover illustration depicts Holo in peasant clothes, and the dust cover features a Holo cosplayer.)

This novel seems different from the rest of the series. First off, it's the 'sequel,' but more accurately a continuation of the second season of the anime. There are many references to Tereo in Book 4, the story that wasn't included in the anime, and thus those who have seen the anime alone ought to read both of these books (4 and 6).

After reading book four, and then this one, I am very pleased with how the series is progressing.

First off, some characters do carry over from earlier arcs, but not like certain people in season one of the anime. There are many references to the second season's latter arc (book 5) and a certain cast member becomes important and may continue to be important later in the series. We just have to wait for the next book to find out.

Like Season Two, this novel shows less of an episodic nature to this tale. Now events in the past relate to events in the present, and people who disliked the series' tendency to make potentially awesome characters into satellite (read: secondary and forgotten) characters like Norah are in for a treat.

The signature banter the series is known for holds true, and there are some comedic lines in the narration that are not part of the dialogue. Holo and Lawrence might not take up all the screen time in this book, but that's certainly not a bad thing! Spice and Wolf fans are in for a treat with this novel!

Another fairly good, and very light and relaxed read. Kept starting and stopping a few books but came back to this.

Good for calming down with tea or relaxing your mind from screen overload.

Similar to the others, though maybe the author is mixing things up a little. He promises more economics in the next book.

The path of gold story at page 103 was quite interesting, and some of the other village legends at page 187 were nice also.

Sometimes just more passively reading along, but other times get lost with imagination.

The series is mostly cute and light conversations, but occasionally the world building is good. Perhaps his writing or translation sometimes feels a bit odd in the sense of space, place or time, but that's just how the books are. While not highly recommended, I still have a fondness for these quick and light books.

Sometimes, this series is really slow. Like this book, with the ending of the last one, I expected something more than I got here.

I am glad of the ending of this one, though, and what it leads up to.
Biggest problem now, is that I do have book 7, but it is a collection of shorts not directly linked to the main story, and I have no idea when I'll get around to buying the rest!

A bit weaker on the plot in this one, as not a lot happens in this one. The dialogue is good, and I liked the book, but not as strong of a plot to support it.

Continuing the Delightful Journey of Commerce and Intrigue

Spice & Wolf, Vol. 06 (Paperback) by Isuna Hasekura continues the enthralling saga of Kraft Lawrence and the wolf deity Holo as they navigate the world of medieval commerce and intrigue. With its intelligent storytelling and nuanced character interactions, this volume maintains the charm and depth that fans of the series have come to expect.

Hasekura's world-building is a testament to historical accuracy, painting a vivid picture of a medieval world marked by trade routes, rivalries, and economic intricacies. The atmospheric descriptions of landscapes and markets immerse readers in the bustling world of commerce. The author's attention to
detail
adds an authentic touch to the narrative.

The character dynamics between Kraft Lawrence and Holo remain at the heart of the story. Their banter, playful exchanges, and genuine moments of connection continue to captivate readers. Holo's wise insights and Kraft's pragmatic approach create a synergistic dynamic that propels the narrative forward.

The plot of Spice & Wolf, Vol. 06 delves deeper into the complexities of mercantile strategies and the intricacies of deals struck in a world driven by commerce. The volume explores themes of trust and deception as Kraft and Holo navigate shifting allegiances and the challenges of their unconventional partnership.

Hasekura's writing style is poetic and introspective, allowing readers to delve into the characters' thoughts and emotions. The dialogue is thoughtful and reflective, reflecting the intellectual depth of the characters and their philosophical discussions. The prose enhances the charm and intelligence of the narrative.

Compared to other medieval fantasy novels, Spice & Wolf, Vol. 06 (Paperback) distinguishes itself with its focus on economic dynamics and the intellectual nature of its narrative. While other works may prioritize battles or magic, this volume excels in its exploration of commerce as a driving force and the complexities of relationships.

In conclusion, Spice & Wolf, Vol. 06 (Paperback) is a captivating and intellectually stimulating addition to the series. Isuna Hasekura's meticulous world-building and deep character interactions make this volume a
delightful
continuation of the Spice & Wolf saga. Readers seeking a unique blend of commerce, intrigue, and philosophical musings will find this book an enriching and satisfying read.

Spice and Wolf volume 6; I was eager to start this one because it is the first volume to go beyond the anime. The anime was so interesting that I wanted to continue Lawrence and Holo's story. With their voice actors continuing to speak in my head, it was a lot a fun.

There's a radical change in status quo here. First of all, there is the introduction of Cole, a little boy who joins the main cast. He kinda-sorta becomes Lawrence's merchant apprentice but wants to study church law instead in order to gain the ability to protect his pagan village. He's an interesting addition to the duo's dynamics (I had to come up with my own mental voice for him).

Because of Cole's age, the main cast is basically a family unit now. Lawrence and Holo are more or less an official couple at this point. Lawrence's feelings are out in the open but Holo's got this Mayfly December Romance fear. The economics typical of the series take a backseat as the volume delves more into the leading couple's relationship. Prime among them is the fact that their journey will be ending soon. It's intriguing to see continuous development that is also a in-universe delaying tactic.

This is not to say that there are no economics. On the contrary, it continues. For instance, Cole's backstory leads into a discussion about the education system in this time period. There's no publicly funded school system so education is significantly different. Those who can afford to hire private tutors. Those who can't pool their money together and hire a wandering scholar.

As far plot, this book picks up directly from the fallout of the last book's climax. I.E. they are pursuing someone from the previous book. Holo sounds like she really wants to sink her teeth into "the vixen". This is the second change to status quo.

The third change is how the book starts. Usually, there is a prologue about the pair traveling in their cart to the next town. Not n this case. Leaving Lenos is the prologue. There's no more cart at all. They're sailing down a river now.

Isuna Hasekura has written another solid entry for this series.

Feels a bit like an extended short story, but that's not all that bad.

After the events in volume 5, Holo and Lawrence still can't seem to just sit down and talk about their changing relationship - perhaps because neither wants to ask the other to change their plans, perhaps because Holo simply is in a pretty bad place as far as worrying about what she'll find at the journey's end - one of the things that made this series work for me was that there isn't a single simplistic issue, but several that intertwine. Instead of facing their emotions directly, the two protagonists reach a mutual understanding to simply prolong their journey as long as feasible; resulting in them diverting to the south on a rather flimsy rational.

There are some really cute scenes showing Lawrence and Holo's emotional and physical closeness; however for me this got to the point where it was like "just kiss each other already". Overall there isn't much "plot" in that volume 6 is basically just the travels southward - unlike the previous volumes this one actually takes place entirely while they are traveling and the emotional drama is nowhere near the level of the previous volume - if reading straight through this is a bit of a welcome chance to decompress.

I've switched over to the audiobooks, narrated by the absolutely stellar Brina Palencia and J. Michael Tatum, two of the very best American voice actors really committing to these books. I hope they adapt the full series, because listening to their voices adds so much. I'm not often a dub watcher, but their work on the show is exceptional, and I'm so happy they are lending their voices to these books.

My only critique is that, while I love that they switch back and forth reading sections, I really wish they would each read their characters' dialogue individually, rather than trying to get used to Brina's Lawrence voice and John's Holo voice. I understand the logistics of editing it is more complicated and they still do fine, but each of them reading their own dialogue would really elevate it.

As for Vol. 6 itself, it's definitely the new weakest of the series, and I hope that doesn't become the trend, with each new book being weaker than the last.

Lawrence gets himself an apprentice and Lawrence and Holo have a brief spat, but with how little happens, the lack of economics or any big character moments, and the plot only inching a few steps forward, this feels like a filler chapter, or a bit of set-up before what is hopefully a much more interesting arc.

Continuing this series where the anime leaves off, I was surprised at the level of skill Isuna Hasekura employs with some of his dialogue. I would say it's probably the strongest element of his writing. Most conversations between Lawrence and Holo, though the two may not actually be arguing, come across like a verbal fencing match in that both are trying to get an edge of the other. Most of it's teasing between the two, but I rather enjoyed the dialogue moments between them. They were the best parts of this volume, and I suspect just about any volume in this series.

I was also surprised to realize that this book was also very dialogue driven in that not a lot actually happens as far as action is concerned. Lawrence and Holo are making their way to the next port town via a river boat and they're aboard it for the vast majority of this volume. I read it rather quickly since its pretty short. It only took me two days. I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

Yet another exquisite addition to a fine series.

Not much to say, other than of course that this book was great and those reading this series should most definitely pick it up. I loved the interactions of the characters in this volume. How Lawrence and Holo would get in fights was simply great. After all romance aren't as interesting if it's all sunshine and daisies are they? As always, my thanks to the Author, Illustrator, and Translator.

One of the better novels, it's incredibly slow and is meant to build up Vol 8 and 9 (town of strife part 1 and part 2) By slow I mean the whole plot revolves around 2 days. Specifically, just 2 days of travel where not much happens. It's like taking the massive point in between the journey in lord of the rings and making a book out of it. It's quite well done I may add. Thus, it has been given a 5/5

This was a breathe of fresh air. New characters introduced, more romantic complications between the OTP, and a setup to the next major arc where they search for Holo's kin's leg bone the church wants to steal. If you've read this far, you're already in for the long haul.

SPOILER: Col is a precious child and him riding Holo's tail was a cute moment.

I fell in love with this series after watching the anime, and picked up this volume to continue the story. (This is in fact the correct book to continue with.) My main goal was to see what happens in the relationship between Lawrence and Holo after he confesses his love to her.

This book would have been 5 stars, but the sometimes awkward writing dragged it down. I don't think this is just a matter of getting lost in translation, though that could contribute.

Always a wonderful light read. While not much happens in this volume - they're on a boat on a river for most of it just chatting as they do - there's still cute stuff between Holo and Lawrence. And now we have a third companion to join them!

Great volume! This one was even more slice of life than usual, and I like the new character that was introduced in this volume. Barely any economics in this book however, but in a series full of it, it's a nice change (although the economical aspect of the series is still generally interesting)

Well...the whimsy of the word play has finally lost its magic. Holo could just speak her emotions instead of playing games. I hoped so desperately to hear some behavior change...but the toxic games are just tedious at this point.
I think I have to bow out.

Lawrence, Holo, and Cole (or Coal, I don’t know since I listened to it audio-style) are very much an unlikely trio. Can’t wait to see them doing stuff together. Bit of a slower book on the action side, but it was very fun to read.

I forgot that the pacing in this series is a little slow... Current plot feels like part of a trilogy or longer. Continues from Vol. 5 and looks like it will keep going into the next volume.
