Charmed #17

Something Wiccan This Way Comes

Rate this book
"Sister Wiccas gather round.
By our power we are bound.
Hand in hand and heart to heart,
force all evil to depart!"

Paige Matthews is new to the whole "Power of Three" thing, and looking to explore her powers. So when she reads of a Wiccan convention taking place just outside of Las Vegas, she thinks it's a great opportunity for her and for her sisters to learn more about their witchy ways. Though the girls are all over saving innocents, they aren't that heavy into Wicca practices, and Paige thinks the retreat could be enlightening.

Piper and Phoebe, however, aren't so sure. They're certain that while they spend their days battling honest-to-badness black magic, their so-called supernatural sisters will be nothing more than a bunch of blessed wanna-bes. Soon though, they hear of a rash of murders committed against practicing Wiccans, and making an appearance at the convention becomes top priority. But as they head for the desert campgrounds, are the Charmed Ones headed straight for disaster?

Paige is still new to being a witch. To familiarize herself more with witches in general, she wants to take her sisters to a wicca gathering in Las Vegas. Her sisters aren’t exactly overjoyed to come with as they’re sure the wiccans don’t have the kind of magic they have. But when Daryl shows up and tells them that wiccans are getting kidnapped at an alarming rate, they see the wicca gathering as the perfect bait to capture the kidnapper. When they get there however, they eventually realize that the hunters have become the hunted.

Great characterization and a strong premise. We’re introduced to too many characters in the beginning though. This made for a rather slow pace in the beginning of the story. And by the end of it when the characters all come together, I’d pretty much already forgotten who half of them were. It’s a story that very much fits the mood of the series at this point though. And it’s quite well written. So it’s still a solid nostalgic read.

Across the country, witches (and Wiccans) are being kidnapped. When the kidnappers strike in San Francisco, Darryl brings this to the attention of the Charmed Ones, who begin their own investigation. This takes them to a Wiccan gathering in the desert outside Las Vegas, much to the interest of Paige, and the chagrin of her sisters.

I can't say a whole lot without spoilers, but this is one of the best Charmed novels. The characters are well written, the plot is one of the best, and the action is great. The new characters that they meet at the gathering are very well done. It's a very good book.

Really enjoyed this one, knew there was something suspicious about the T sisters from the start! Thought the Halliwells different approaches to the whole Wiccan scene was represented perfectly. Although I did think them being vanquished by just getting blown up was a bit anti climactic, other than that a really great all rounder. Didn’t spot any mistakes with names or powers etc.

Rounded up to five stars mostly for the fact that these tie-in novels can do a few things the WB/CW never would have gone to for Charmed.

Not canon but still set around the second half of season four. Phoebe is now working at her advice column job and she and Cole are still engaged, and Cole is still human which doesn't jive with the show. Darryl shows up and we haven't seen him for a while so that makes up for it I suppose.

Paige is wanting to get away for a vacation with her sisters but knows that Piper as the oldest will be the hard sell. The destination is Las Vegas and Paige has the means to convince Phoebe to go along in hoping a two to one vote will pass. There is to be a Gathering of The Covens where witches and Wiccans alike are invited to attend out in the desert about Vegas that Paige found surfing the Web on a bored lunch break.

Piper and surprisingly Phoebe don't seem all that interested. The two oldest Halliwells are sure that none of these witches will have powers or the knowledge they have as The Charmed Ones even though Paige, as a Matthews, is only just now getting the hang of this Power of Three gig.

Piper says the others will be "Blessed Wanna-Bes", but Paige thinks they need to learn the practices and not just spells to vanquish demons but observing the Solstice and Wiccan rituals. Instead, it is a two to one vote against Paige's plans.

That all changes when Detective Darryl Morris arrives at the manor and informs the sisters and a present Leo of his latest case. All over the country, Wiccans have been reported missing. So far, the known number is sixteen, but Darryl believes it could be more than that after the most recent San Francisco abduction turned up evidence even on the East Coast.

There is even a warning sent out to covens who convene on the Internet so Darryl believes The Charmed Ones could be next. While Leo checks with The Elders, Darryl asks the girls to talk with the covens of the three disappearances in the Bay area.

After talking with covens, each sister finds out that the man or woman abducted was the High Priest or Priestess of their respective covens. Also, they had legitimate powers such as visions, aura reading and super sight. Piper doesn't find it as silly now that real witches are being taken when they inform Darryl and Leo of their findings knowing that something is trying to get rid of power or steal it. Demons could be silencing good witches while warlocks could be getting at the powers.

The sisters now head off to the Gathering knowing that it will lure out whoever has been behind the kidnappings. Not exactly on the Strip but still there are many covens present despite the news of all the Wiccans going missing. There are hippie types, women in flowing gowns of white gauze, girls dressed all in black with Goth eyeliner and purple hair and an all-male coven who dress like New York lawyers hitting the bar.

The male coven has two high priests, Craig and Christian. Craig is the sleazy one who gets on Phoebe's bad side while Christian proves to be a lot nicer. Paige gets to know the Goth coven but finds that they are elitist snobs who are looking down at every other group around them but their leader, Jasmine, declares Paige as cool. Piper stumbles upon two sisters who look halfway normal compared to the weirdos prancing around and introduces herself.

They are Tessa and Taryn Connors, and they have come to the Gathering in honor of paying respect to their youngest sister, Tina. She is one of the Wiccans that has been kidnapped so Piper, stubborn yet very sympathetic to losing a sister, now has a reason to find out who is behind this. It also helps that Piper realizes she might be too hard on Paige being the youngest.

The next morning at breakfast, everyone is informed that Craig has gone missing. A few covens leave and The Charmed Ones decide to go out on the town with Tessa and Taryn to Las Vegas, the recent disappearance having shaken Taryn, as a means of comfort and keeping an eye out for the only real people they have connected with. Before they leave, they put a protection spell around the tent only they can pass or anyone who holds their trust if Leo should show up.

Phoebe and Piper are having luck at the slot machines while Paige has no money left after the Connors sister bail out soon, too tired from having been upset after all. Paige soon comes across the Goth coven and finds them killing it over at the craps table but discovers that they are using magic for personal gain to win. Having been told to stop because they have cleaned out that table, Jasmine invites Paige to go out to the clubs with them. Piper and Phoebe take their winnings and go back to the campsite to call their respective honeys.

Coming back, Piper and Phoebe discover that the cops are there to look at surveillance footage in Craig's disappearance, Piper freezes the room so they can look at the tape and find that ten-foot-tall demons with jackals faces in black robes outside the tent! As they get back in position so Piper can unfreeze the scene. Taryn, Tessa and Christian enter the room.

Piper is caught using her powers!

Paige isn't having a fun night either because she keeps witnessing Jasmine and her coven using their powers on innocents out of pettiness and revenge. Leaving in disgust, Paige is able to stop a man from mugging a young woman by orbing his knife away from him. Her good deed doesn't go unwitnessed as Jasmine, coming after Paige, witnessed the whole thing.

That following morning, Craig's deceased body has been found. More covens flee the Gathering, and the Charmed Ones find that his body was drained of blood thanks to Phoebe stumbling and touching the body and getting a vision. Now the Charmed Ones are up against demons and having four people know about their powers and it's only going to get worse before the day is saved...

Everything seems clear cut and dried but then we get a swerve in Something Wiccan This Way Comes since there is still about four more chapters and 60 pages left to go. Some of it is predictable because you have four people stumbling upon witches with real powers and it needs closure, so you just know that one of them is up to no good but which...witch is really a demon or a warlock?

Also, I love the ending because even though I like Paige...Piper is my spirit animal with her dry wit and snark. ;)

Blessed be, Charmers.

A new version of the stories. One where the first enemy is not the enemy. Again a new interesting concept. For some reason it felt a bit long and all but in the end it isn't. No sister mix ups.

The only thing that annoyed me slightly and I think it has been doing that for a while is that Piper doesn't entirely feel like the Piper I know. but than again it has been quite a while since I last watched Charmed!

After watching a video on YouTube last night I just had to read the next Charmed book. So glad I did. It had been since December of 2022 since read last one.

Paige brought home a flyer wanting to go on vacation to a Wiccan convention in Vegas. Her sisters turn it down but then Daryl shows up telling them about missing wiccas. They are the highest in their covens.

It's off to the convention after all since the person might show with that many covens. Paige, Piper and Pheobe all mingle the first night each finding a different coven to talk to. Then someone disappears.

I was surprised by one of the twists that went down. However I did guess who was behind part of what was going down because we got a double feature of sorts with two different bad groups taking wiccans.

The sisters plus Leo were fighting the culprits at the end and boy that was a fun one. Would loved this as an episode in fourth season where took place.

Despite being one of the better written Charmed books, the amount of anti-Wiccan sentiment in this book was very, very off-putting. And I'm not even Wiccan. Not that you need to belong to a religion or community to be respectful of it. Throughout the book, Piper, who is acting very out of character here by the way, is constantly intolerant and disrespectful towards the Wicca religion and Wiccans. This is never addressed as a legit issue, and by the end of the book, her views have not changed at all. You would think that Charmed of all series would actually do a good job at respectfully representing Wicca. But nope.

Overall it wasn’t bad but I can’t get over how ridiculous the personality changes were. There were a handful of inaccuracies from the show as usual in the books, but reading them kind of rapid fire in order makes me hyperaware of the quality decline where I am in the release history. And the outsourcing to different authors means we had two books in a row including Egyptian things, which I never picked up on before because of the whole never reading them in a kind of rapid manner in order…

If you liked the main characters on the show then you will probably like this series of books. I have only read a few because I find that the books and the show and book are a lot different in my opinion. The few that I have read are interesting and worth reading, I just didn’t like that the ones I read had so many details that were different from the show.

Premise: good. Characters: good. Setting: wild. Conflict resolution: ??????? Paige forgot she could just orb out the rope tying everyone down... Piper just forgot she had powers and just let her sisters kick and punch their way through a fight?? What??????

Something Wiccan This Way Comes has a great title. Hands down for that one. The premises is nice as well, with the Charmed Ones heading to a wicca convention – that’s a new one, eh? And we have Paige to thank for that idea! – mostly because something or someone is killing innocent witches, and as usually, it’s up to the Charmed Ones to do something about it. At least, that’s why Piper and Phoebe agreed to join their sister on a trip to Las Vegas. Or well, that’s the reasons they give to her, although we all know that even the Charmed Ones can’t resist Las Vegas.

Upon their arrival at witch-camp, the three magickal sisters soon learn that unfortunately they won’t be staying in one of those uber-cool, extremely luxurious hotels. Instead, they’ll spend their time in a small tent. But that can’t ruin the fun, which only gets greater as they meet their fellow wiccans and realize half of them don’t even have any actual magic skills. But innocents are innocents, and the Charmed Ones are determined to help. Then, in the middle of the night, the leader of one of the covens present gets kidnapped and is later found murdered. The Charmed Ones rush into action, aided by two wiccan sisters who lost one of their sisters to the wicca-kidnapper as well, and who Piper immediately sympathizes with, reminiscing her pain over the loss of Prue.

When they finally get a clue of who the kidnappers are, it looks like chances are turning for the Charmed Ones and the wicca community. But unfortunately, things aren’t always as they seem, and sometimes danger comes from a corner most unexpected…

I enjoyed the interactions between the three sisters a lot in this book, and also the fact that Cole and Leo – although I love them to bits – weren’t always present. As I said, I love them, but having them around always can be annoying, especially when the Charmed Ones desperately need some sisterly bonding. Plus, having the Charmed Ones communicate with other witches, most of them wannabes, is hilarious and entertaining as well. It’s totally like Piper to get worked up over people pretending to be witches, but possessing no actual magic, and it’s totally like Phoebe to absolutely not worry about that.

The plot twists, especially the one at the end, were outstanding in this book. It reads more like a mystery novel than an actual Charmed novel though, a murder-mystery, and our three favorite sisters are the detectives in this book. The author did an excellent job getting the personalities of the Charmed Sisters right, and I loved how authentic all three of them were. Phoebe remains my all-time favorite, but I’d give an arm and a leg for Piper’s powers. This book also shows that albeit powerful, they are not without failure, and they too can make mistakes.

Something Wiccan This Way Comes is a fun, original (although not one of the most original, mind you), character-driven book that focuses a lot on the relationship between the three sisters and their coming to terms with the existence of other wiccas who aren’t all that bad, even if they have no real powers. They also learn a valuable lesson about trust and about what it means to be a Charmed One. A nice book for Charmed fans, but not the best one in the series.

This ending probably surprised me the most of all the Charmed books I have read so far. I liked the story a lot and it seemed like the plot was so obvious but at the end there was just more then reads the eye. Yet the ending was logical and the story overall was a lot of fun so this is probably one of my favorite Charmed books so far.
