P. L. Deshpande was one of the legends in marathi literature. Probably the most read, most quoted and most loved author of maharashtra
The writings though mostly known for its sublime comic nature, include a vast range of plays, caricatures, essays, travelogues and much more
One of my many cousins, he has this ability of making everyone laugh. If he is present, no one will be sad or angry. His presence itself freshens everyone's mood.
Pula is like him but much more. Making people around you laugh isn't easy but making your readers laugh is definitely a huge task and Pula pulled it off with every book. I'm a form believer that it is easy to make one cry through words but the same isn't true when it comes to humour. And that is why I respect all those authors who write Humour more than rest. And that if why I have huge respect for Pula.
Asa mi asami is about Dhondopant who works as a clerk. His life, ways everything is of middle class. The company he works for is taken over by another boss and it causes upheavals in his routine life. His wife and kids gets acquainted with the change and so does Dhondopant tries as well but it is not as easy as it appears as his new life is culturally far removed from the life he was used to leading.
Pula was a gem, is a gem. He is still alive through his works. His writings still make his readers laugh and not just readers from older generations but of present one and I'm sure will do for future ones as well. I'm definitely going to recommend my daughter to read his works when she grows up.
Given the overwhelming love for PL Deshpande among the masses as well as the classes, there was certainly a sort of pressure on me to appreciate the humour of the great litterateur even before i picked the book from the shelf of the library. And very frankly, the book didn't match up to those sky high expectations.
Just the fact that a book written in 1964 managed to, for the most part, bring out loud laughs out of me in 2019 is probably enough to call it a true classic. But the portion after the protagonist shifts out of a chawl into an apartment complex and the attempt to bring out the humour in this newfound prosperity of a quintessential lower-middle class Maharashtrian hasn't aged too well. I, for one, found it just a little dull.
Again, only if i had read the book with little to no expectations, like i watch most movies, i would have probably enjoyed it just a bit more.
Typical P L Deshpande. One of the few authors who even after 60 years of writing this book, has the ability to male you laugh. Although, must say that as the book progresses, it starts paling ( as opposed to Batatyachi chaal ). But as always P L ends this book with a masterstroke observation and a poignant closing remark.
Sorry for writing the review in English, but writing a review in Marathi on the phone would have taken ages.
This is one of 'the' best book i have ever read in Marathi. The language and humor make you fall in love with Marathi all over again. And the ending sentence was the best part. It is meaningful if you read it directly as a sentence but it has this totally deep meaning if you read it after book is finished.
The first ever book I read of genre 'P.L. Deshpande'. His style of writing was a genre in itself. The finest ever humor author of Marathi language and I am thankful for having his books in my life.
Amazing book by P L Deshpande. The story of the book is simple - how does a simple person lives in Mumbai (in 1960s) - this is described in a funny way. The humour of P L Deshpande is amazing. You cannot stop reading the book. Moreover, to describe such a simple story in such exciting way is difficult but he manages it. It is a small but entertaining book. You can see how the life was in Mumbai in 1960s. It shows the life of middle class family very well. Some of the things are still applicable - the experiences of shopping with the women, how everything in the house is decided by women, getting notice from school of children and how the colleagues treat each other and so.
Dear Fellow Readers, This is an another classical Gem in the Writing of prominent social comic writer P L Deshpande, it describes a story an imaginary life of a person living in Mumbai City and it describes the crispy moments which sometimes make you life and sometimes it make you sorrow and the magicl thing in this book is that the reader every time feels that he is the character and his life is matching with the book.
No more words for this magical writer and how work
All the characters in the book are very hillarious and we'll developed. I have read it like ten times and still read some passages to relieve myself from stress. Not only it makes you laugh, but also makes you feel how hard it is to cope up with the ever-changing world. It really sucks when you don't wanna change but you have to just for the sake of others.
First time I read this book is about 17 years ago. I finished this book in one sitting. From that day I read it repeatedly for so many times that I don't remember, but I do remember that the joy and a bright smile on my face this book put on....
Pu La writes so well that I was able to see it right in front of me. The humour he has is out of the world and I laughed at every other page. I recommend this to those who never explored Pu la and want to read him. This should be a good start.
Every book of Pu La is a Gem. Real laughter one gets out of his every book. I have never ever came across such a humorous books, there is no competition to Pu La till date.
