The Seaside Saga #19

Stairway to the Sea

Rate this book
From New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio comes Stairway to the Sea, Book 19 of The Seaside Saga.

Dune grasses sway atop the Barlows' craggy bluff. Hidden past a narrow path there is a rickety stairway going down, down, down to the sea. Even in its neglect, the stairway is beautiful, with its sweeping views of Long Island Sound. Depending on the tides, those stairs lead to a tiny secluded beach. But for years, the stairs have been nearly forgotten. Until now.

Until this stairway descending a steep sandy embankment becomes a life ring for the one man who needs it most. A sudden offer to fix up the stairs brings a sea change, both to the stairway itself and to the people who gather on it. Conversations. Revelations. Secrets. Desires. All are intimately told in this sacred spot where sea and sky meet.

And The Seaside Saga continues.

complicated relationships

This is book 19 in this series, and with each book I get more and more attached to these characters—-friends, lovers, brothers, family. All of them have deep, complicated emotions caused by both grief and love. Shane, especially, is so lost, so unsure of his future, and even his friends and his love don’t seem to be able to get through to him. As always, I’m left wanting more, because with each book in this series the characters feel like my friends, and I want them all to find peace, happiness, and love. I look forward to Book 20!

Didn’t see that coming

Relationships are so complicated sometimes…or rather people can make their relationships so complicated. While couples seem to be sorting things out unexpectedly in one direction, we’re left with another couple… There are so many people to cheer on in this story in such a lovely setting, but people are just so good at making things crazy. Thanks Joanne, for another enjoyable story.

I received an arc from the author and this review is my honest opinion. Joanne DeMaio has written another great addition to this series. The lives of the friends of Stony Point continue to be complicated. But that is what keeps me returning to read this series. The emotional connection of the characters is real. They are more than friends, they have become a family. If one is hurting, they all hurt. From family drama, a try at a reconciliation, a life adrift, a budding romance, or a bittersweet ending, the wait for book #20 is already too long.

You never disappoint me. This book brought heartache to my heart. So many words of encouragement, choices to be made, and mends to be cleared away. Always waiting for the next. Left with the usual cliffhanger and this time left with tears. ❤️

It’s always nice to be able to revisit my friends from Stony Point. Stairway to the Sea is the 19th book in Joanne DeMaio’s seaside saga. This book is a lot about reflection. Shane along with a few of the other characters give a lot of mindful consideration to their past thoughts and actions. There are many different relationships amongst the characters, some being easy and yet some really complicated. There is pain, remorse and a whole lot of love. I can’t help but root for them all to find love and happiness. In this book, Shane is really torn, he knows he loves Celia and wants to be close to his friends and brother Kyle, yet his life as a lobsterman takes him so far away. Where does he really belong? I am so immersed in this series that the characters have become like real people to me. I have grown to care and love them all and only want love and happiness for them, especially for Shane and Celia, my 2 favorite characters. I find these books to be the perfect read. Between all the wonderful characters and the setting in Stony Point with the beautiful descriptions surrounding the ocean with the sea grasses and the sweet salt air, how could you not want more? I am so excited for book 20, The Liars, which is set to release on March 4, 2024 to see what’s in store for the beach gang and to see where their love will take them.

What a great story!

So many things happened in this installment of our beach friends lives!! And still so many unanswered questions!! Joanne is the queen of cliffhangers! So many hard but good conversations were had.I don't know how I feel as I just finished the last page moments before writing this review. So good I can't wait for the next book as always! What are Elsa, Shane, Celia, Mitch, Cliff, Kyle, Paisley going to do??? Oh and what did that letter to Jason say?!

I’m holding my breath

This was, in my opinion, the best and most emotional book yet. I am 100% Team Shane and Celia, and I love how they are the stars of this show. I also appreciate all of the back stories, not just Shane’s, but Jason’s, Maris’s, Kyle’s, and others. I will say that I slowed myself down the closer I got to the end because I didn’t want it TO end. I am counting the days until March 4th and The Liars.

I have enjoyed the Seaside saga over the years and this newest installment really tugged at me with confessions and secrets being revealed. Loved the chemistry between Maris and Jason , Celia and Shane, and Mitch and Elsa. Felt sad for Shane and all the emotions he went through while dealing with different situations and wow with the cliffhanger ending I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

My beach friends lives are so complicated. I couldn’t put this book down because I was so eager to know what was going to be the next tangled web. Isn’t that just like real life though. Life can be so complex, but so enjoyable all in one. Thank you Joanne for sharing yet another book of our tangled up beach friends. So good!!!

Holding my breath!

Emotions are running high! One staircase opened up so many wounds, old & new. Did they heal? Again, we'll have to wait & see. March can't get here soon enough for me.

So, I have a lot of mixed feelings on this book. I really root for Shane and Celia but I don’t know how that’s gonna turn out. I also root for Mitch to be able to connect with Elsa. I find that I don’t like the vibe that Cliff sends out, I really want him to hook up with that Paisley girl and go away. All the relationships are very complex and intertwined. I can’t wait to see how they finally resolve.

In Stairway To The Sea, the beach friends' story continues where The Visitor left off. Author Joanne DeMaio transports the reader back to the tranquil seashore town of Stony Point, Connecticut. The story picks up in late September, where our beach friends lives are like the tides, sometimes they keep moving and changing, but they will always have the support of their friends and family.

In Stairway To The Sea, Author Joanne DeMaio easily captivates her readers' attention with this beautifully written tale through a seamless and flowing storyline, and with a wonderful description of a tranquil beach setting that wraps itself around the reader like a sun-warmed beach towel. The characters draw you into their lives with a strong emotional pull, their complexities and flaws are true-to-life, it is easy to relate to them with compassion, empathy, and hope.

Stairway To The Sea is an intricate story of interweaving friendships and ever changing life events. It is a wonderful story that continues to demonstrate the power of the magical sweet salt air that will cure what ails you. In this nineteenth installment in The Seaside Saga Series, the author weaves a story that continues to focus on the internal struggles of Shane Bradford, and how a hidden path on a stony bluff leads to a forgotten and dilapidated stairway to the sea and a tiny secluded beach, helps him work on his personal troubles.

After a week of traumatic grief, Shane is unexpectedly temporarily laid off by the captain of the lobster boat so that he could deal with his grief and get his head on straight. Shane finds himself back in Stony Point, feeling adrift and with a loss of identity since being kept off the sea. Jason offers Shane a job to keep him out of trouble, to replace the dilapidated stairway to the sea. What Shane doesn't realize is that this job will assist him in coping with his grief, and how to deal with his life one wooden stair at a time. And if that isn't enough, the beach friends each discover how this enchanting stairway where conversations, secrets and revelations have a way of coming to the surface, where the sky and sea meet, and the power of the magical sweet salt air that will cure what ails you.

I loved how this installment's main focus continues to be on Shane, and how a traumatic incident provides a life lesson and forces him to focus on his internal issues as he works on repairing the stairway to the sea. I also loved how the beach friends also discover the magic of the stairway, and how it gets them to ponder their own personal issues. You can't help but feel the full gamut of emotions as Shane's internal struggle pulls at your heartstrings, and how intriguing it is to see how the rest of the beach friends deal with daily and past issues that surface. The author teases her readers with another cliffhanger ending that keeps the reader waiting to see how Elsa, Cliff, Mitch, Celia and Shane's relationships will turn out. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what is revealed in The Liars, the twentieth installment of the series ... sigh.

In this installment in the series, the reader follows along with the beach friends' lives that are full of friendship, love, secrets, lies, regrets, challenges, heartbreak, grief, surprises, and second chances. As you read this installment, the beach friends continue along in their life journey in Stony Point.

So now that I have whet your interest in the beach friends latest comings and goings, drive under the railroad trestle and enter the enchanting beach town of Stony Point ... pull up a beach chair ... and visit with the close-knit longtime friends in author Joanne DeMaio's delightful novel, Stairway To The Sea.

The Seaside Saga Series is a heartwarming series of stories of friendship, family, painful secrets, lies, and regrets, new beginnings and second chances. Author Joanne DeMaio weaves a wonderful tale written in the third person narrative, that is set in the present with flashbacks to the past. The reader is transported to the tranquil seashore town of Stony Point, Connecticut, where they follow along with Celia, Maris, Eva, Matt, Jason, Kyle, Lauren, Nick, Elsa, Cliff, Mitch, and Shane as their lives change like the tide's ebb and flow on their little tranquil coastal town.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Once again, I totally loved my time in Stony Point, hanging with the whole gang. As they each try to move forward in their lives, some of them find themselves having to step back a bit. Not all is right in everyone's world at the same time. That's one of the things I love about this series—there are the good times for some.... and then drama for others.

When Shane's life is upended, he comes back to Stony Point to hopefully heal. Will the steps he's rebuilding lead him to rebuilding his own life? Only time will tell.

Stairway to the Sea was a wonderful escape read for me, I always love my little visits to this caring community. And Joanne always ends the book with a little bit of a cliffhanger that makes me excited for the next book.

I highly recommend this series, I've loved every single one of the stories and getting to know all of the characters of this amazing community. If you have not picked up these books yet, you really should. You will come to love this community and these people as much as I do.

STAIRWAY TO THE SEA is a beautifully written story that takes place in the quaint seaside town of Stony Point. This cast of characters is the best in any series I have read. I fall deeper in love with each one as this story continues. The most remarkable thing about this series is how strong the relationships are. Always loyal - always supportive - and always available when someone is in need.
In this particular story, Shane is deeply troubled after the death of one of his closest friends. His friends rally around and try to help him deal with the pain. While he is temporarily suspended from his job on the lobster boats, Jason gives him a job repairing some badly needed stairs that lead down to the sea. A lot of much needed conversations happen here in this beautiful setting among the friends. We are left, once again, to see how the relationships between Shane and Celia and also Elsa, Cliff and Mitch progress.
Great addition to this series. Each one just gets better! If you haven’t started this series yet, what are you waiting for!!!

Stairway to the Sea by Joanne DeMaio is book #19 in her Seaside Saga. What you say, 19 books you say? Once you start reading this saga, you will completely understand why you can’t stop at one book. I envy those of you reading this review and trying to decide if you want to start this fun journey; you will be having all these books in front of you. Now I have to wait until March 2024 for the next book to come out and,as always, there is a cliffhanger. In this story, we find Shane facing a life dilemma driving him back to Stony Point, Connecticut. Waiting for him is Celia and her baby Aria. He has not told the rest of beach gang he’s coming back yet. Once Jason finds out what happened to Shane, he throws him a lifeline. You will have to read book 19 to find out the rest. If you have not started the seaside saga yet, I will tell you you should do this for the love of books; you will not be disappointed. Enjoy.

I love the Seaside Saga Series as Joanne draws you in to these characters who are family, long-time friends, new friends am mere acquaintances. The town of Stony Point is a wonderful setting for the lives of Maris, Jason, Kyle, Lauren, Eva, Nick, Matt, Elsa, Cliff, Mitch, Carol, Celia and now Shane. In Stairway to the Sea, family and friends come together to help Shane through a very difficult time. They all let him know they are there for him in their own ways and you can't help but feel the love and support from all. Even still, Shane has a lot to think about and a job that Jason asks him to take on gives him the opportunity to do that. This book had a cliffhanger I didn't see coming and can't wait to find out what happens in Book 20 of this series - The Liar! As in all of the Seaside Saga Books, you feel like you are part of this wonderful group of friends and family and you root them on as if they were your own family.

In this book we find Shane and he's now back at Stony Point, CT. He and Celia are able to meet up often.
We also are able to catch up with the others in the group and what's new with them. Love learning yet even more secrets from the very past and some have moved forward and others not.
Never tire of the descriptions that are so detailed you can hear the ocean waves upon the shore. Another glimpse into Neil's notebook as Maris is taking it to the editor...
Decisions some have to make that are hard as life goes on... So many emotions as you tell them the decision they must take but they take their own and own up to it.
Can't wait to read more of the gang and how they are really there for one another. Can’t wait to read more of what Jason will find at the outside cathedral…

The 19th book in the Seaside saga does not disappoint. It is so hard to pace yourself reading about the “family’s” life. The focus of this book is Shane. He is at a crossroads after his friend’s unexpected death at sea.Shane now questions whether he will return to lobstering, return to his home in Maine, and his decision about Celia.A twist in the Elsa/Cliff/Mitch triangle with the newcomer Paisley. Will this hinder or help Elsa come to a decision.Joanne Demaio is an amazing author that weaves in details from her other novels. Her descriptions make you feel as though you are actually there. The stairway to the sea have such a powerful meaning to Jason and now Shane. The Liars #20 can not be released soon enough. This series is phenomenal and does not disappoint.

Wow! I couldn’t put the book down! After being laid off from the lobster boat, Shane heads back to Stony Point to figure out what to do & to heal. Shane struggles with his grief after loosing his best friend, Shiloh. Having just lost my mom, there are so many feelings I have & don’t understand. Shane’s struggles helped me to see more clearly what I am feeling. As always, the Seaside friends help Shane through these hard times. Yet, there is humor in the book – the moose head kidnapping is solved. But, the lies continue between Elsa and Cecelia, Elsa and Cliff. I hope they resolve these very soon.

The worst part of the book? I finished it & now have to wait until next year to find out what happens. I love this series! I know you will too.

It's always a treat to pick up one of Joanne DeMaio's Seaside Saga books. I get to visit with my friends and see what they are up to.

This book will not disappoint. Once you start reading it you will be pulled into the story and won't be able to put it down. I found myself reading it while cooking supper, getting ready for work and then when I was at work hoping I could take a break soon and finish the book.

Shane is upset from the death of his friend, Shiloh, and now he is going through the different stages of grief. And it is great to see that the friends from Stony Point are there for him when he needs them the most.

Check out the book, you will not be disappointed.

Stairway to the Sea is an outstanding addition to The Seaside Saga. The title and cover alone are intriguing. We wonder how this stairway has or will impact the lives of our Stony Beach Friends. Many of them are currently struggling with many different emotions both from the past and present. Just as the fall leaves are now beginning to swirl and fall in our favorite beach town so are the secrets and lies among these long time friends. Most only in an attempt to protect these very special relationships. As always in this series we are left eagerly waiting for the next book in this series…The Liars.

Once again it is wonderful to be back with Jason and Maris and Shane and Cecilia and the rest of the Seaside gang! These series always keep me captivated with Joanne DeMaio's beautiful writing and her ability to leave each saga with a question that I can't wait to have answered. This time Shane is really struggling with the loss of his dear friend Shiloh. Jason knows he has to go help Shane because no one has seen or heard from him. There is jealousy, grief, worry, love and deep loss along with lots of laughs in this book. But it ends with another question that had my heart stopping... instead of what I thought might be happening it was a complete shock... You have to read it to find out!! I love these sagas!

Totally shocked at this ending. I agree the characters are so complicated and at times very frustrating. I may be unpopular, but I would like to see some closure. Hoping that the Barlows don't falter again. I would like to see Cliff move on (Paisley?) also get a real apartment or cottage. Elsa needs to get a grip and Celia needs to stop hiding her relationship. That's my two cents..

End the series already. I'm that person that once she starts a book, she needs to finish it. This series seems to have no end in sight. The author is become repetitive in her writing with all the books in this series.

Another quick read with the continuing story of the beach friends. This one focuses mainly on Shane and Celia and Elsa and the two guys after her heart. And then leaves it all hanging out there with no resolution!
