Button Blossom #4

Cooking Up a Kiss

Rate this book
I want the simple life—which means I’m staying far away from any and all bad boys.

Me and love? We aren’t friends. My ex broke my heart, and I can do without that again, thank you very much. So I’ve chosen as uncomplicated a life as I can find—working as a server at a small-town diner.

Except trouble just walked in, with a capital T.

Preacher, a retired football star, is six glorious feet of incredible good looks and a teasing smile that threatens to derail my plans. He pretends he's a confident playboy, but I can see through the ruse. It's an armor someone who's been hurt wears to protect themselves from more pain. I know it well… I wear a suit of my own.

Despite our instant connection and explosive chemistry—something I may have discovered with a few sort-of-accidental kisses—dating Preacher would mean anything but the life I want, nor does it offer safety. My still-mending heart needs some guarantees.

Even if I can convince Preacher to dismantle his armor, I’m not sure I can ever discard my own. If only falling in love were as innocent and easy as the first time. When I parted ways with romance, I swore there would be no exceptions.

Not even Preacher.

Except, I'm not sure I can face the possibility of a future without him. Can this broken heart bear to lose the man who just might be my forever?

Trixie and Preacher share some romantic canoodling (gasp!), but there's no buttering the biscuit in this romcom. This sweet, small-town romance will make you laugh, and the chemistry is explosive, but reader blushing is kept to a minimum as Preacher and Trixie find love again.

Preacher and Trixie were just a delight. This was such a sweet story of learning to love again and learning to forgive, with plenty of laughs along the way.

Things I Loved:
-The hair situation
-Flowers
-Asher & the football
-“Is that a spider on your leg, Livia?”
-Granny
-“Fine. Then don’t kiss me.”
-Bee mishap
-“A confident woman is intimidating to a man who needs to step on others in order to feel tall.”
-Preacher fumbled 😂
-Forehead kiss
-“I know you’re renowned for your desserts, but I would take a kiss from you over an entire truckload of your pies.”
-French silk pie
-The bouquet
-“Other people in your life have made you shrink. I love you too much to ever want to make you feel small.”
-The ending! 💜

These two had a fantastic push and pull, and I loved the sweet growth they went through as a couple and individuals.
I loved seeing the previous Button Blossom couples (plus Asher and Sharpie!) sprinkled throughout, though you can totally pick this up and read it as a stand-alone. I am also so excited for Beckett and Dr. Fox—that epilogue was sooo sweet!

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Trixie & Preacher’s points of view

– there is some innuendo

– Trixie’s ex-husband had taken advantage of their relationship when they were together

Review:

I had so much fun reading Trixie & Preacher’s story! I loved Trixie’s attempts to deter Preacher from seeking her out at first and how it comes back to bite her (not in a bad way, but a funny way!). I loved Preacher’s thoughts about the different things he encountered in Button Blossom and how he’d react to them when they warranted a reaction. I especially loved how Preacher was with Asher and how Asher’s own actions led to some surprising things for Preacher! I loved that Trixie warmed up to Preacher and they ended up with a good friendship as a basis to their later relationship. I also really loved that they both tried one time or another to back off of their feelings, but inevitably fell further than they had beforehand. Some of my favorite scenes/moments in this book included: bees, a welcome/thank you gift, a beach day, accidental mistaken identity, a football game, and Preacher trying to let Trixie do her thing while still supporting her even when it wasn’t the way he wanted to do so.

Summary:

Trixie doesn’t want to take a risk on love again. She did that once and ended up with her heart broken. So Trixie moved to the small town of Button Blossom to work as a waitress in order to get away from the hurt of her past relationship. She loves people, and her job allows her to be in on everybody’s business which is a plus. When Preacher walks into her job, Trixie doesn’t know much about him before others besides that his smile makes her feel something she doesn’t want to. But with every interaction, Trixie gets to the bottom of Preacher and finds someone just as hurt as she was. And he might just feel the same unwanted feelings that Trixie does…

Preacher just retired from playing football professionally and moved to Button Blossom to get away from everything to figure out who he is without it. When a blond beauty catches his eye at the local diner and has no idea who he is, Preacher is in awe and amused. He wants to really get to know the woman, but with her walls high it is going to take more than a few trips to the diner. Needless to say, Preacher is thrilled when Trixie invites him to local hangouts with her friends to help him get integrated in the small town. Trixie already let him know that she isn’t interested in a relationship right now, even though her actions say otherwise. Will Trixie ever come to the same realization as Preacher and allow them to be together?

Cooking Up a Kiss by Rachael Eliker is a sojourn into small-town America by way of Button Blossom, the quintessential small town. Trixie is making a go of it, saving money, aiming for her goal of starting her own restaurant. After her disaster of a marriage, she is determined never to fall in love again, and so far that is working. One day Preacher McNeil, recently retired pro-fooball star, turned up. He was HOT! Then he came back, but this time he caught her at her worst, admittedly not hard to do. She had been dancing and knocked a bus tub of napkin-wrapped silverware to the floor. When trying to retrieve some of them she got her hair stuck on the cabinet pull and couldn’t reach scissors. Of course, Preacher chose to enter the diner then. He did untangle her but she wan’t going to feed his ego, and refused to acknowledge she’d ever seen him before. She gave him pie as a thank you. Store-bought pie, not her own homemade. They became friends, but they each had far too much trauma to unpack for anything else.

This was the anatomy of getting over a bad relationship and starting a new one. Both of these characters had built up so many walls that they were nearly impossible to breach. Breaching took months of work and the reader followed along. Preacher forgave and Trixie forgot. Her restaurant opened after Pontoon, the owner of the cafe moved to a more amenable climate and took the high school football coach with him, so Preacher was now a coach. They were such endearing characters, so well-written and sympathetic that it brought tears to my eyes. The plot was thin, as it often is in a romance, but it was there, and powerful. All about abuse, and lack of confidence in oneself. Terrific. I loved it.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Cooking Up a Kiss by the author. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #RachaelEliker #CookingUpAKiss

Romance level: kissing 🔥

This book was a treat! It was sweet as pie! Pun intended.

How these two keep meeting is so funny. I loved the hair situation. Preacher was just so cute. I love how you start to get a little bit more information about his past on each chapter.

Trixie has also been hurt before. It was really special to see how despite everything she went through, she was always nice, bright, positive & caring.

I'm sorry, that first kiss? 😍I was so not expecting it!! This book keep taking such surprising turns.

The game😂 it was the best. You could see the competitiveness of those two. Willing to do anything to win. Trixie knew what she was doing.

Their chemistry was outstanding! Their kisses were🔥. Each and every one of them was better than the last. The kiss in the cheek😂

I love how upfront these two were. They were not beating around the bush... & went straight through it. Their communication was there, all the time.. even despite the fears, they spoke about it.

The main problem was dealt so like them. I was glad to see how both of them said the truth that needed to be said for them to wake up. Maybe not the way, but the actual truth was so good! I loved seeing them solve it & choose each other. The cheerleading moment was one of my favorites.

The epilogue was the best!!! The twist & turns were there until the end & I loved it! I'm excited for what's coming next in the series!

Trixie is just surviving after a divorce, in a small town where she dreams of having her own restaurant one day, because food is her love language.

Insert Preacher McNeil, former NFL QB, who is also just surviving after retiring and moving to the same small town, that he had once passed through and found charming enough to lure him back after heartbreak. Heartbreak both from retiring and being left by his girlfriend, who wasn't happy he left football.

Both Trixie and Preacher are trying to figure what it will take to make them thrive. The find a friendship, that leads to kissing, that leads to possibly finding happiness.

This is a very sweet, just a kiss and a hand hold, kinda story. It is a quick read, that will give your mood a little boost if you are in need of one.

I do wish we had seen more of what Preacher was up to, it is dual pov but we hardly see what he is doing outside of his interactions with Trixie.

I don't personally subscribe to the thought that I must forgive someone to move on, it can happen without me forgiving them. So that aspect of the story wasn't my favorite, but it didn't take away from what I did like. Which is a great small town, filled with lots of fun people and a very sweet romance.

Thank you to Rachael Eliker for the ARC.

Their Slow Road To Happiness -
Trixie was still getting over the hell that her ex-husband out her through and as such had sworn off relationships. Preacher thought moving to the small town will help him get over his ex-fiancés betrayal and live a quiet life, which meant staying away from relationships. However, both Trixie and Preacher felt an inexplicable pull towards each other, that they tried everything not to pursue.

Unfortunately, as they spent time together, their closeness led them steal kisses from time to time, whilst they continued their platonic friendship. Luckily, after they let their guards down and opened up their hearts, they were able to bury the pain from the past and embark on a loving and fulfilling relationship.

The heartfelt story had a depth to it, that grabbed my attention and made it difficult for me to take a break, once I started. It is a definite must read book, that you will be happy to read and recommend.

I received an advanced copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This story was so sweet and fun. I really enjoyed it. Trixie is a sweet but spunky southern belle and Preacher is a flirty but kind retired professional football player. They both have histories of being hurt in love and so they are reluctant to engage in a romantic relationship. I loved how this story, even with their histories, felt light and easy. The angst was minimal and appropriate. They both felt the attraction from the beginning, but so much of the relationship built over their friendship and just spending time together. There are some great funny moments and some excellent swoony kisses. When Preacher and Trixie finally cross the point of their feelings being too strong, they still have some hurdles, mostly of their own making, to overcome. So many great characters and plenty of character carryover from the rest of the series, but this book can definitely be read as a standalone. The story is sweet and clean. It’s a great romcom. “Happily ever after isn’t a final destination. It is the journey.”

I've loved each of these books set in Button Blossom by Rachael Eliker more than the last. Trixie, a waitress in Button Blossom's diner intrigued me. So I was thrilled when she got her own story. I loved everything about it!

Trixie is just your normal waitress. But she has a secret. Trixie's dream was to own her own restaurant. And it was squashed by her jerk of an ex-husband. I loved how to her making food for people was all about caring for them. And she was so good at it!

Preacher is new to town. He's a former football star. Just looking for a place to live a quiet life. I loved the way he took to Button Blossom and was welcomed by the whole town.

There are so many things to love about this one. I love that much loved characters from the rest of the series are there. This book just made me happy!

I was sent an e-copy of Cooking Up a Kiss as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.

A good choice for a light hearted clean read or a palate cleanser from a heavy read while still keeping with a good story, writing and characters. First I loved the nod to curly haired girls everywhere. The scene of their official meet cute is not far off if you have curly hair. The struggle is real, lol. I enjoyed that while this is a fun and light rom com the writing is perceptive and able to capture human emotions and it's nuiances. I love this series for its lightheartedness but still with some substance and not feeling cookie cutter or shallow. This can be read as a stand alone. I've grown to enjoy this town and all the people. This reminds me of this authors pop star romance series. Read that after this for sure. Wonderful at building a real communtiy that you'd love to be a part of and feels natural. The epligoue with the words he says to her was chefs kiss.

Do you have a secret attraction to a bad boy including leather jacket and cocky smirk? Preacher is this and so much more.
When he walks into the diner and helps Trixie out of a dilemma she can’t get him out of her mind. She’s not looking for a man. Been there, done that.
Preacher isn’t looking for a relationship. Been there, done that. But there’s something about Trixie.
Is it possible they can navigate a friendship without getting entangled?
Rachael has done it again, writing a heartfelt story of wounded hearts, magnetic attraction, cautious trust, and abounding hope wrapped in humor and plain good writing.
So much more than a typical romcom. I recommend this book.

A funny, swoony, competitive, romantic story of a retired football player and a waitress in a very small town. Both the player (Preacher) and the waitress (Trixie) carry baggage from a previous divorce. They set interest and sizzle off with each other but both are relationship-shy due to the baggage.
There is a lot of growing and learning going on in this relationship and they each try to help the other to navigate the process.
I enjoyed the book and appreciated that they each encouraged the other to take the high road when dealing with their exes. I also enjoyed that it was a clean and wholesome, too.
I was provided with an ARC of the book and this review is my opinion given voluntarily.

I loved this book about Trixie and Preacher in small town, Button Blossom. The characters are lovable and the romance starts out with a funny scene in the small diner where Trixie is a waitress. Preacher has just retired as a football player and was dumped by his girlfriend so he is new in town and trying to figure out what he wants to do. Trixie settled in Button Blossom after her husband divorced her several years ago. Since both are scarred by their past relationships, they start out getting to know each other and progressing to friendship then kissing buddies. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy clean romance and love a book that makes you laugh out loud. I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Great story that captivated my attention right from the start and held it throughout. Trixie and Preacher are complicated characters. The author has taken the time to truly develop them and make them seem real. I thoroughly enjoyed all the wonderful scenes like the bee sting, the information about flowers, jumping off the rock, and many more. Both Trixie and Preacher have a past relationship that has greatly affected their attitude towards themselves and their relationships with others. An extremely enjoyable story and I can’t wait for the next one.

Tasty contemporary romcom

This story is full of familiar characters from the town of Button Blossom. But mostly it revealed the romance between our favorite waitress Trixie and the hot new guy in town Preacher. Both main characters have been badly hurt in previous relationships and are trying to figure out how to start over again. Becoming simply friends is a great method to protect themselves from additional future injury. I loved watching Trixie and Preacher heal and grow from their injured states without growing apart from each other.

I received an ARC copy of this story from the author via BookFunnel and voluntarily chose to share my review.

They turned the flirting up a notch in this one. Trixie surprised not only me but herself 😂 she was bold and knew how to take care of herself whilst having a little fun.

One of my favourite parts was the chaotic football scene 😂 from cheating to tackling Preacher like a "battering ram" to accidental innuendos, it all had me in stitches.

They were both jaded by love, but they found each other, and worked through their past hurts in order to love each other completely.

I'm loving this series. I can't wait for Beckett and Dr Fox 😍 so excited it's coming out in August!💃🏾

Cooking Up A Kiss

What a hilariously funny story of a couple who both are coming from failed relationships. Preacher is a retired quarterback of a pro football team whose ex fiancé cheated on him. Trixie was married long enough for her husband to become a lawyer and give her insecurities from his verbal abuse. Once he had his legal credentials, he divorced her taking everything except the Camaro she had bought for him originally. Will these two lonely people be able to help each other heal from their past relationships?

Loving the Series

Trixie is still serving up food and sass at the diner, including to the newly retired professional football player Preacher. The whole Button Blossum gang is in attendance, as well as appearances by both Trixie and Preacher's exes. Once again, there are humorous dialogs, swoony kisses, fun events, and miscommunication. There are also scenes of forgiveness and romance. This is a totally feel-good, heartwarming story with a great ending. Now, to binge read the next book in the series....

Cooking Up a Kiss is a clean, heartwarming, second chance, small town romance for Trixie and Preacher. I love the town of Button Blossom and its inhabitants, especially Asher. Trixie and Preacher are both awesome characters. I loved watching them come to grips with their individual pasts as they journey to their HEA. This well written book has all the warmth, fun and love I have come to expect from Ms. Eliker's books! I think you will enjoy spending time in Button Blossom

This is the first book I have read by this author and it won’t be the last!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a sweet, romantic read with plenty of humor sprinkled in.
I think I was hooked right from the start. Trixie gets herself into a jam and Preacher comes to her rescue- the whole awkward situation was relatable.
I haven’t read the other books in the series, but I didn’t have any trouble enjoying this book. I can’t wait to read more.

Trixie and Preacher - such fun! The banter, the kisses, the honeybees, and so much more were all a delight! Following Trixie’s thought processes was quite humorous! She definitely sees the world differently than much of the town of Button Blossom, but it all makes sense and makes you laugh. There were some serious times, and the theme of forgiveness was handled very well. It was truly an enjoyable book.

Loved diving back into Button Blossom and seeing characters from previous stories while watching Trixie fall in love. You really got to dive into Trixie and Preachers life and see what they went through in the past and why these two unlikely people ended up in such a small town.

A clean romance that somehow still gives you plenty of spice. Super excited for the next one!

Loved it. When I saw the name Preacher I thought this was a Christian romance, which can be a bit too much in the religion area. It is sweet, but not religious. Preacher is a former football player. The story is engaging, entertaining, and a delight to read. I am eager for more by this author. Thanks to her for providing a copy. My review is voluntary.

I liked Trixie right from the beginning. What got me hooked is the writing for armor and protecting oneself. It was so very easy to relate to and the struggle with Preacher and what is the next step. I enjoyed this sweet, small town romcom with the laughs. I received an ARC copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

Cooking Up a Kiss has some great characters... Trixie was my favorite and (for reasons you can read for yourself) Gary was my least favorite. I would love to live in a small town like Button Blossom where everyone is family.

I recommend this clean romantic comedy for anyone looking for a light read.

Button Blossom is an interesting place to visit. Both Preacher and Trixie have heartache and pain acerbated by cruel words. Exes can weld a power sword of words. I enjoy the interaction between them and how they can see clearly what the other needs without realizing they need the same thing. Mainly they need each other. An entertaining story and one that I enjoyed.

2.5 stars. I really wanted to love Trixie's story but it was hard to get past her attitudes towards love and help from others. Also, "cuddle" has to be a code word for sex in this "sweet" story because there's no way a retired NFL player wasn't having sex with his cheerleader girlfriend.
