“God Talks” is anything but.

I’m frustrated by reading these books that would be almost comedically bad if it weren’t for the deception people are falling for. So why do I read stuff like this? Because people I love fall for it.

Another book for our “For Research Purposes Only” shelf. This should no way enter the realm of Christian books and is saturated in New Thought, Word of Faith, Prosperity Gospel nonsense (perhaps with a sprinkle of Bethel, Redding influence). I’ll return later for a more in-depth review.

The complete lack of scriptural citations alone should be cause for immediate concern and any Christian should immediately put it down (or, if you’re like me, finish with frustrated annotations in the margins).

Maybe I’ll come out with a book called “God Talks” and inside it says: “Go read your Bible.”

Excuse me while I go rinse my mind out with some actual scripture and maybe a dose of CS Lewis.

A Million Mistakes, But Still Loved

This exceptional work transcends the boundaries of conventional religious teachings and invites readers to explore a profound connection with the God.

Rush's book is an exhilarating mix of personal anecdotes, deep insights, and practical wisdom. His background in the marine corps adds a unique flavor to the narrative, allowing readers to glimpse the fascinating experiences that have shaped his perspective on life.
Furthermore, his unwavering commitment to improving politics and challenging the status quo is both inspiring and refreshing, making his voice a powerful catalyst for positive change.

One of the standout qualities of this book is Rush's ability to present a myriad of thought-provoking ideas to enhance our daily lives. From practical advice on personal growth to bold concepts that challenge conventional thinking, he offers a wealth of wisdom that encourages readers to break free from limitations and embrace a more fulfilling existence.
Through his words, he ignites a spark of inspiration within us, urging us to actively pursue a life of purpose and meaning.

The section on "God talks" is truly transformative.
The ideas presented in this section are so impactful that they have the potential to revolutionize one's approach to prayer and open up a world of profound connection with God.

Rush seems like an excellent dude too - with really fascinating stories about his work in the marine core.
He is also really focused on improving politics. He has a real drive to improve the political and governmental systems - he almost sounds like an anarchist at certain parts - and I thought it was really refreshing. I wish him best of luck in his new political party!

In conclusion, God Talks: How to Have a Friendship with God (Even if You’ve Made a Million Mistakes) is an exceptional book that pushes the boundaries of spirituality and personal growth.

Ed Rush's captivating storytelling, coupled with his deep insights and practical wisdom, make this book a true gem.

Don't miss the opportunity to delve into this transformative work and discover a profound friendship with God.

Oh my! It’s THAT good!

I started out really wanting to like this book. Then, at first, I’ll admit I began to think maybe it was not so great, too simplistic maybe, just too easy. And then it really grew on me as I kept reading. And I began to realize that its beauty is in its simplicity…God doesn’t make talking to Him complicated, we do that. I started trying God Talks (there are also companion audio guides included for free, but I haven’t accessed those yet, but I can’t wait to do so). Not to give away a spoiler, but near the end, when the author tells about visiting the “jail” where Jesus spent His last night before the crucifixion, and he asks Him, “What were You thinking about sitting here that night?” And here was the answer he received, “I was thinking about you.” (The collective you, all of us.) What a thought!

So, yeah, I wish I could give a 100-star review. But since I can’t, the 5-star and my comments will have to do.

Okay, Ed is so like-able and I did enjoy this easy read. I do have a problem with the fact that he doesn’t talk about the need for repentance at all and leans heavily into how perfect everyone already is just as they are—but that isn’t what the Bible says. We are to put off our old selves and be conformed to the image of Christ. There is such a heavy emphasis on self discovery, we should fix our eyes on Jesus instead. I also found this to fall into prosperity gospel territory, which is not necessarily promised to every last one of us just because we are believers. The positive side is that he is inviting people of all walks to enter into communication with God in an approachable way, and that is wonderful.

Really enjoyed this book! I only heard Ed speak one time on YouTube, but it was so good that it caused me to take a chance on this book. I’m glad I did! It was actually great! Lots of super helpful, extremely practical suggestions and exercises to help strengthen your relationship with God. And after all, what’s better than that?! Great audiobook!

of course He does

God is amazing!! And of course He talks to us. So listen! Can you think of any good father that doesn’t want to talk to and be involved in His children’s lives?

I won this book through GoodReads First Read program.

I have never read a book like this. Rush has a very unique writing style. He writes like he is talking to you in a private conversation. I have always struggled with hearing God speak to me. I have at times struggled with payer. This book sets out a procedure for the reader to take to talk with God as a friend. This isn't a theory; this is a specific instruction that shows you how to converse with your creator, who loves you.

Keep at it and follow the instructions. It is easy to let your mind wander away from the goal of speaking to God. Rush sets out specific instructions for 7 days to follow. Rush even gives the reader a bonus section for more topics to talk with God about. I enjoyed the Q & A section.

A Wow of a book!

Loved the stories and the simplicity that says 'this can be your journey too'. I believe this book represents the heart of Gold to draw us to Himself in an intimate friendship without the fluff of religion and do-it-yourself projects. Thanks Ed for walking this walk and sharing your story with other weary travelers who simply want the reality of the love of our Father God in our lives. This book has been a great inspiration for me. I look forward to seeing where this journey leads.

The concept of God talks is new to me. Prayer is not. I live Ed’s approach to a deeper, more intimate conversations with God- not just talking and asking- but listening and receiving, most importantly.

Ed Rush’s God Talks is a spiritually motivational book aimed at readers who want a more personal and direct relationship with God but may feel disqualified by guilt, inconsistency, or past failures. Its core promise is clear from the subtitle: friendship with God is not reserved for the polished or spiritually accomplished. Instead, Rush writes for ordinary people who want to pray more honestly, listen more attentively, and believe that divine guidance is available even in the middle of a messy life.

One of the book’s most appealing qualities is its accessibility. Rush appears less interested in formal theology than in helping readers build a habit of conversation with God. The tone is encouraging, practical, and often framed in the language of personal transformation. Rather than presenting spirituality as distant or intimidating, the book treats it as something immediate and relational. That approach makes it especially inviting for readers who have felt overwhelmed by more academic Christian writing or discouraged by the idea that closeness with God belongs only to the spiritually elite.

A major strength of the book is its emphasis on action. It does not seem content merely to inspire. It tries to give readers a method. Rush connects prayer, reflection, mindset, and personal purpose in a way that is designed to feel usable in everyday life. For many readers, this practical structure will likely be the reason the book resonates. It offers not just reassurance but a process, and that process seems intended to help people move from vague spiritual longing into regular spiritual practice.

The book also appears to blend devotional Christianity with the language of self-help. Themes such as overcoming limiting beliefs, reshaping inner dialogue, finding purpose, and creating abundance place it within a contemporary motivational tradition as much as a traditional religious one. For some readers, this will be a real advantage. It gives the book energy and momentum, and it may help spiritual ideas feel relevant to work, relationships, confidence, and decision making. Rush seems intent on showing that faith is not a compartment of life but something that can reshape a person’s whole direction.

At the same time, that same quality may divide readers. Those looking for deep doctrinal engagement, close biblical interpretation, or careful theological nuance may find God Talks more inspirational than rigorous. Its appeal seems to rest in clarity and encouragement rather than complexity. If a reader wants a book that carefully wrestles with difficult theological questions, this may not fully satisfy. The framework appears streamlined and persuasive, but possibly simplified in ways that could feel thin to readers from more doctrinal or liturgical traditions.

Even so, the book’s central pastoral instinct is compelling. The idea that a person can approach God after making a million mistakes gives the work much of its emotional force. That message of spiritual openness, second chances, and relational intimacy is likely what gives the book its strongest impact. It speaks to shame without getting trapped in it, and it seems to offer hope in a direct, uncomplicated form.

Overall, God Talks sounds like a warm, practical, and encouraging guide for readers who want to make prayer feel more personal and faith feel more active. It will likely be most effective for people who appreciate straightforward spiritual coaching and who want a book that invites them to begin, not just to admire the idea of beginning. Readers seeking theological depth may want something more substantial, but readers seeking motivation, reassurance, and a conversational path toward God will likely find this book meaningful and energizing.

I love it! I was on my journey of learning to hear from God and discerning His voice, and I love how the author, Ed Rush, made it so simple and easy to understand and even gives step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

It was a very enjoyable read, and I laughed a lot while reading this. For anyone who wants to begin hearing from God, I think this is a great beginner book to start with.

The only thing that wasn't covered in this book was how to discern His voice because sometimes the enemy speaks lies. But since this book was made for everyone, not just believers, I believe God, in His love, will protect His children nevertheless.

Don’t read this if you’re looking força quick fix

This is a motivational book director based on Christian principles. If you don’t know the bible you’ll miss the references. So, take a breath bible scholars and theologians.

I do endorse the notion that God wants to talk to YOU regardless of who you are. Understand too that this book is the beginning of a journey not the journey itself.

This book is not only a great guide to help you hear from God and strengthen your relationship with our Savior, its also told in a fashion that is fun to read and very engaging. the author doesn't act like he is a holy roller who has life all figured out, or like he is above you. he tells you his mistakes and admits that he will keep having them. I loved this book so much and even bought another copy for my daughter. a must read if you want a deeper relationship with God.

perhaps the best book I’ve ever read

So simple, so honest, so straight forward and so real. I love the way the book was written as an epistolary to me (and to you). I especially love how Mr Rush invites all of the members of the million mistake club to begin and to change the world with him. This book has given me so much hope. I’ve already purchased a copy for each of my 6 children. Thank you Mr Rush f thank you God my Father for always being here to talk

Surprisingly entertaining while delivering a critical message

I love the conversational style of Ed Rush's writing. This was probably the only nonfiction book that I didn't want to put down. It was entertaining while at the same time delivering a deep, critical message. I'm just starting to implement what I've learned from this book and can't wait to see what God does next

This book CHANGED me. Thank you Mr. Rush for writing it. I can't explain how it changed me, just that it did. Maybe it's the connection to the divine I felt stronger than ever, maybe it's the realization that I'm not alone and supported, or maybe it's just the new understanding that He wants more for me. Right on Ed Rush for this powerful book.....

I did not finish this book. These are not bad stories and I was moved by a few of them, but if you are a Christian, this is not the God of the Bible. No focus on Jesus, only self. God is not a genie. I do not recommend.
