Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE (née Miller) was an English writer known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, the murder mystery The Mousetrap, which has been performed in the West End of London since 1952. A writer during the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction", Christie has been called the "Queen of Crime". She also wrote six novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. In 1971, she was made a Dame (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to literature. Guinness World Records lists Christie as the best-selling fiction writer of all time, her novels having sold more than two billion copies.
This best-selling author of all time wrote 66 crime novels and story collections, fourteen plays, and six novels under a pseudonym in romance. Her books sold more than a billion copies in the English language and a billion in translation. According to Index Translationum, people translated her works into 103 languages at least, the most for an individual author. Of the most enduring figures in crime literature, she created Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. She atuhored The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in the history of modern theater.
I love Hercule Poirot. I love his relentless logic; I love his sense of deduction; I love his intelligence. I love knowing that I will have a great time to be the hero when I open a book by Christie. And this was the case again here. That's a little book, almost a short story, which once again amazed me by Poirot's understanding of events. Here, he defies his disgust for the cold season and the snow to go and celebrate Christmas in the English countryside. It is because the stakes are high. Someone has seized a giant ruby, and he must find it. He will succeed with a sleight of hand, of which he alone can be the author. I had a great time reading. As always! ;)
The Pale Horse
Marc Easterbrook, a writer, leads the investigation into various murders. He witnesses a fight between two girls, and one of them dies a few weeks later of natural death; Mrs Davis, seriously ill, calls on Father Gorman to confess and gives him a list with the names of several people he murdered on leaving Mrs Davis' house. Fortunately, he had hidden the plan in his shoes, allowing the police to take possession of it. The writer and the police noted with dismay that most of the names on the list all died under similar conditions: natural deaths due to the terrible flu, meningitis etc. There is an inn to make the story a little more involved, "The Pale Horse", run by three women adept at witchcraft and terrorize the whole village with the powers they are supposed to have. Including killing them from a distance with brain waves during 'a ritual of trances, pentagrams, slain roosters etc. Agatha Christie's novel (the author I appreciate very much) disappointed me: too long presentation of the different protagonists, no Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple to bring animation. I love detective novels and fantasy books, but the mixture of the two in Agatha Christie does not mix, in my opinion. It's long and rather dull; the investigation is stalling a bit on the spot; I was not hooked at all by this book.
I really liked this book. The first story “The christmas pudding ” was very good but the second “Pale Horse” was very very good. The story was very well written and the plot twist at the end I didn’t expect. In conclusion I really liked and I recommend to anyone who likes thriller/crime/detective
