This is a novelization of a low budget B horror film released in 1982 of the same name. I have not seen the film, but got this novel in a box of 80s horror novels that I am working my way through. Here is a link to the film: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087555/...
Our main protagonist and heroine is an art student in NYC with a 'gift' for seeing events and expressing them on paper via charcoal. One day the class is drawing a nude and she 'blanks out' and draws the model with handcuffs floating in a river. Turns out the cops found the model shortly thereafter. It seems there is a new serial killer in NYC (remember, this was written not too long after Son of Sam) and the cops are clueless. She keeps getting visions and eventually goes to the police with her roommate in an attempt to help.
Yes, this reads like a screenplay, but that is what novelizations tend to be like. Overall, an enjoyable, fast read with a somewhat surprising ending. I probably would not seek this book out, but if you come across it, it is worth a look 3.0 stars.
Ouch, I just noticed this book has a total rating of just 1.5 stars on here. I disagree. I did not hate this book. It did jump back and forth and around to different places and characters from chapter to chapter but I was able to follow along quite easily. The story was interesting and the climax unexpected. It was interesting to find out the culprit, who was actually responsible for being the "Handcuff Killer". The characters weren't the most well developed but overall a couple of them were good enough to be redeemable in my eyes. Virna, the clairvoyant, was the most interesting. There are some rather graphic murder scenes that made me cringe just a bit for the victims. Overall, it wasn't awful, but wasn't a 4 or 5 star read either.
