It's summer break for the girls at Beachwood Academy and that means sun, surf, and sensational escapades at the Beachwood Country Club. Abby, a rising sophomore, is so excited to have gotten a last-minute gig as a lifeguard, especially because jobs are usually reserved for club members.
Abby desperately wants to win the annual lifeguarding competition, and with it a college scholarship. But when she arrives for her first day on the job, she finds herself face-to-face with some serious club member attitude. And there's an even bigger surprise waiting for the gorge senior boy she's been pining over ever since they met at a swimming competition earlier this year.
Can Abby break through the rules, regs, and mean girls to be the first-ever non-club member to win the summertime lifeguarding competition and maybe even the boy of her dreams?

This book was a really great beach read. It was light, funny, and easy. Of course it was a contemporary YA novel so there wasn’t much tension, and it felt good to kind of take a break from all these new paranormal books coming out, and start something else. This was my first Pretty Tough novel, and I enjoyed it a great deal. The Pretty Tough novels by this author highlight the happenings of certain teenage girls, in this book the girl being Abby Berkeley, and how they try to balance their social, athletic, and family lives, with romance thrown in as well. I like the Pretty Tough novels because I feel like I can relate to them better. And also because the girls in these book are portrayed as strongly willed characters, opposite the damsels-in-distress that we seem to be seeing in a lot of new YA releases.
Abbey Berkeley is an amazing character. She's described as being sporty, competitive, and always a winner. But she's also very down to earth, funny, and well...just normal. She's surrounded by rich friends but she doesn't act like a snob, and she honestly decided to take the job as lifeguard because she wants to, not just because of the perks. She doesn't back down from a challenge, which brings her higher up on my likable radar, and she does whatever she has to, to achieve her goal. Even with hot boys distracting her left and right. She might get a little too in events at points, but she always makes up for it. She also doesn't take crap that the other girls give her, and she gives it right back. The only thing I didn't like about her, was her un-willingness to trust the new people introduced to her, and her high capacity of gullability.
Speaking of hot guys, there's one in particular that has his eyes on our winner Abbey. The name's Brody, and man oh man is he a cutie. I've read tons of books about broody, sexy, charming, sweet, and dark guys, but never have I read about such a sweet-heart. He does everything he can to try and win Abbey over, which I found to be a very lovable trait in a guy. He's also Hot! With a capital H. The romance between Brody and Abbey is hilarious, especially with her cop brothers threatening to do him apart, as well as intense. There are so many fights going on between them, that I just wanted to slap Abbey in the face and tell her to get over herself already, and kiss the boy! She decided to be a rebel, and not listen to me until the end. Seriously, these teenage girls in YA books give me such a *head desk*. I would just up and jump the guy if I had a chance! ;) LOL.
The other characters were well described, and Abbey's best friend Zoe annoyed me a little, but that's just how the usual relationships between friends work. Some one gets jealous, someone gets angry, someone gives the cold shoulder, someone begs them for forgiveness. Ay ay ay, been there, done that, I totally understand. And Abbey's other friends were also OK, at least for a bunch of hot-tot rich girls. Overall, like i said, this was a light and quick read for a day at home, or out in the sun. Pick it up if you're looking for a easy and entertaining read, or if not, at least add it to your TBR just in case you ever need one.
I just love the Pretty Tough series. Books with girls who play sports are always some of my favorite sort of reads, and Making Waves delivers an awesome read with some serious drama, lifeguarding, and friendship fun.
It was really fun to get to know Abby in this one. I just love the characters in this series, and in Making Waves, quite a few new characters pop up. All the characters always have such a great story to tell. I just loved Brody. He was such a great guy.
Making Waves holds a plot that was a ton of fun to read. Right away I was swept up into Abby's world. While there is a romance in this one, there also is focus on friendship as well, which is always lovely. I wanted there to be a bit more drama at the end. There was a really great build up of the plot throughout the whole book, but I felt like everything was a bit too simplistic.
A must read for anyone who loves a good contemporary. Making Waves by Nicole Leigh Shepherd was a fast paced, all around fun kind of read. I look forward for the next installment in this series, as I just love it so much. It's a perfect blend of the beach, drama, romance, and some good old friendships.
