Anthologies are difficult to review. If I could just review each author individually I would give 5-stars to Lexi Adler's "Books and Bad Decisions". Somehow she managed to give us a complete story in 12 chapters of swoony, relatable scenes. This is a dual POV friends-to-lovers romcom in the making and I am here for it! The MC's are best friends but with all the underlying tension and comments you know that they have deeper feelings for each other. I loved seeing how this love story unfolded and found the ending so satisfying. I hope Lexi turns this into a full novel because it was SO GOOD! Spice Level: 5 (Romance with strong content, fade to black sex)
I wish there had been a content warning or spice level included either in the Contents or before each author's story. I really appreciated that S. Massery included this in "The Corrupt King" so that I could skip that one, as there are some triggers that I try to avoid.
This anthology, on the whole, had a spice level of 8+, with the exception of Lexi's story and Samantha Bee's story "Tears of a Fighter". Which was also very good, but had some darker content and mature themes. I would also have given her story 5-stars.
Overall... if you are looking for a spicy, dark anthology where smut is highlighted in 90% of the stories, this is the book for you! Enjoy and Happy Reading!!! ;)
Regular, Smegular! by Becca Seymour MM College Basketball Romance - Fast Break #3
A cheesy game of spin the bottle grabs my interest, but it’s the hot guy with sexy piercings and delectable ink that keeps it.
Have I kissed a man before? That’ll be a no.
But I’m definitely interested, and by the way Tiller can’t take his gaze off me, he’s hoping the bottle lands on him.
Spoiler alert: it does.
And holy crap, it’s the hottest kiss I’ve shared with anyone.
Now there’s one slight problem.
That I’m bi isn’t the issue. I’m embracing that new development with eagerness.
It’s the fact that Tiller is my basketball coach’s son that makes my attraction complicated. Add in how Tiller’s joined the coaching team and is instructed to work directly with me, it’s quite possible there’s going to be nothing regular about this college season.
So, I *definitely* liked the other anthology from the conference, “Beasts and Beauties,” a lot more than this one.
📚 ClickByte by Tate James
This was a short intro scene and a fun teaser. I would love to see Tate continue this story.
📚 Shamelessly Loyal by Heather Long
I feel like I have been randomly dropped into the middle of a forest without a map and just a “good like finding your way out.”
I skipped it - not because it’s bad, but it just feels like this is one of those anthology reads that is written for current readers. I did grab the first book in the series!
📚 The Mark by Persephone Steel
This was a three-star read for me. It was interesting enough that I might pick up the completed book to see where the story goes, but I felt like there were some writing bumps.
📚 Can’t Take the Heat by MV Ellis
Skipped - I read the first four pages, and the writing style isn’t for me :/
📚 Dark Daze by Maggie Alabaster and Jo Bradley
I’m guessing the story is trying to set up an RH scenario, but like every time a guy is introduced, they are desperate for the FMC, and she’s ready for smexy times. It feels weird.
Yup, it was like a trilogy shoved into 64 pages. It made it hard to tell what the author’s writing style was because everything was slammed together.
📚 Say Yes, Chef by Ali D Jensen
I skipped after trying the first five pages.
-> At this point, I started skipping around to read authors I know/like <-
📚 Lust and Libraries by Elle Thorpe
It had been a bit since I read the Saint’s View High books, but when Lacey was mentioned, it clicked that Meredith was the friend.
This was a great, steamy short story! I always appreciate it when an author writes an actual short story for an anthology.
📚 Powerless by Margaret McHeyzer
President doing things that aren’t actually under the President’s purview *checks author’s biography* Ah, Australian, that makes sense.
Just when this felt like a slice-of-life story that had me skimming pages (sorry, but like I have the West Wing for Presidential stories, or Scandal for sexy President stories), we were hit with a wtf moment and a couple of pages to set up a book. I'm not interested in picking up the book.
📚Regular, Smegular by Becca Seymour
I could have read a full-length novel about Leon and Tiller! But I also felt like the short story format gave us a little “c” conflict that focused on the characters rather than dragging them out. I'm super curious about Tyron’s book!
📚 Tears of a Fighter by Samantha bee
A good glimpse into the start of a spin-off to the Steel Rose story. I'm definitely interested in grabbing the full book.
📚 Rent a Date by C. Hallman
It’s surprising that a hired killer turned fake escort story could be so sweet.
But I love a guy who sees a quirky girl and appreciates her for who she is.
📚 The Corrupt King by S. Massery
Reading this made me a bit sad, as I started reading Sara’s books back when it was mercenaries and mafia. I would love to see a return to this world and a giant leap away from the hockey books (that have absurd plot elements).
The planned novel appears to be scrapped :/
📚 Whiteout by Dyan Lane
This was a steamy short that had all sorts of mystery to it.
It looks like we *may* be getting an entire novel later this year - yay!
Elle Thorpe Lust & Libraries We first met Meredith in Deviant Little Liars in this she’s interning for her fathers Lawyer firm where she sits in on the court case of Easton , River & Wyatt . She feels a connection to Easton & River and decided to pursue it to see where it leads . However someone is watching her stalking her and when she’s attacked can the guys help her in time .
Veronica Eden Trick Play Lainey hates Hockey the town she lives in revolves around the game and to make matters worse her twin Theo is one of the top players along with Alex his best friend. When she’s being bullied Alex comes to her rescue pretending to be he boyfriend but what turns out to be fake dating turns into so much more.
Tears Of A Fighter Samantha Bee Lennox has taken care of her brother and sister but now her sister is ill and she needs money for her medication. She goes to the fights and when her friends Dean and Wren find her they are not happy but shes now part of Scars inner circle but she’s finding her pride won’t let her accept the help she needs .It was great hearing from Scar and the guys again and I can’t wait for Lennox’s book and Scars final book.
Rent A Date C Hallman Talon has a new hit and the closest he can get it to go to the wedding with Ainsley so he sets up a fake escort agency . Ainsley I scared of Talon at first but when they click things take a surprising turn .
The Corrupt King S Massery Ophelia is taken and her worse fears come to light. Xavier is going to save Ophelia no matter what but when everything comes to light can Ophelia get over the betrayal. I wish I had a date for the full book because I loved this.
Whiteout Dyan Layne Breanna has been called to see the grandmother she’s never met . On her way she gets caught in a snow storm and Sinjin rescues her . I can’t wait for the rest of this story.
This is a cute bite-sized introduction to the Heston U world, and I'm excited for Book 1 Iced Out to come out! For a Novella, this story had it all: Fake dating, Sweet and cheesy moments between the characters, and spice. Some things felt rushed, but that's a given with Novellas. I enjoyed it as an introduction to the upcoming series.
First, can we talk about this stunning cover! I love it! I love anthologies because you get just a little taste of a new book and get to discover new authors. For this review I only read Tate James and Sheridan Anne's story. I usually go back and read other ones but I had to read theirs first.
Tate's story has me really excited for a full story with Noah. I mean, she can make it RH or MF, but either way I am all in. I loved the little twist at the end, I didn't expect that at all. Great start to I hope, fingers crossed, a new series.
Sheridan's story was such a surprise. I usually don't like Stockholm Syndrome type books but this was written in such a way that I forgot that she was kidnapped/stolen/saved. I feel like Chiara is going to be a very interesting FMC and then there is Killian. He is mysterious, lethal and kind of a softie. I definitely hope this story is being extended into a book or series because I need more!
So far, I've only read one novella in this anthology by Heather Long, Shamelessly Loyal. I am reading the series where we "met" the two main characters - Milo and Lainey - and this is a story about what was just in the background previously. All I can say is if ever I need someone, or someoneS to have my back? I'd want a friend as wonderful as Lainey. And if I had a brother who cared enough about me to want the best for me? I'd want Milo. Their story is hawt and sexy and dangerous and crazy. But I loved it. It's just a...side story...if you've read the series and gives us insight into the relationship blossoming between these two characters and unlikely allies. Love them both!
not adding a review for the whole book as i mainly read this for ‘trick play’ by veronica eden and will only be leaving a review for this prequel of heston u hotshots
rate: 5/5 although, i kind of wished i read this before reading ‘iced out’ but even though i did, this novella was still so good. normall i’m not a fan of novellas but the way veronica eden writes is just magic to the words and the characters.
i adore the couple, lainey and alex, they’re so cute. the fact that this had fake dating, i was hooked. i loved how lainey has such a huge love for romance books, hehe 🤭. and for alex, the way he just cares for her is wholesomely cute. this was such a cute and fun read
Amazing five star anthology. I loved every single read of this book. I found some new authors and I can't wait to read more of their books. I picked up this anthology because I knew we got a little glimpse into Milo and Lainey from the Vandals series and wow did it not disappoint , their chemistry is unreal and I'm so excited for more now. You can read the stories one at a time or all together in this anthology you will not be disappointed it is amazing.
I read Veronica Eden's Trick Play. It is a fantastic prequel to her series Heston U Hotshots. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series as i know it is going to be as amazing as this snippet is. May 8th could not come sooner!
I'd definitely recommend reading Trick Play if you like: 🏒 Fake dating 🏒 Hockey romance 🏒 Jock x Nerd 🏒 Brother's best friend (and teammate) 🏒 Bookish heroine 🏒 Boy obsessed
Sheridan Anne & Tate James you both have rocked my world & I want more... I thoughly loved both books and looking for more from you both... This was my first story from Tate & I will certainly add your amazing talent to my tbr list asap. I didn't read the rest as I don't know who these authors are but I will read them later on...
This is a book filled with short stories. Some are complete stories and some are tasters for a future or further story. The quality of the stories vary throughout the book, with some better than others. Overall this book gives you a taste of how the author writes and their style of storytelling, so probably a good way to find new authors.
So far I have read Dyan Layne's contribution, Whiteout and wow! It was the perfect amount of story and steam. I'm looking forward to reading Monica James, Elle Thorpe, DL Gaillie and finding new to me authors as well.
I love reading anthologies. They tend to expose you to authors and stories you may not have read before. Loved these stories and even added some of the books to my TBR.
I definitely need more of ClikByte by Tate James. Just this short introduction has me wanting more ASAP. I feel so bad for Noah and can’t wait too see what will happen.
Whew ngl that opening novella was atrocious. The characters weren’t likable and then to basically have the female lead have amnesia felt like a cop out. Not Tate James best fr
There are many wonderful short stories in this anthology. Some are flirty and fun, others are slightly dark and deliciously wicked. Definitely worth a look!
