Against the Clock

Rate this book
I'll never date a football player— but all the veteran quarterback wants? Me. Daniel

My life’s defined by my long career as a quarterback. I’m determined to have a great season, because I’m not sure how many I have left. But when I slam into gorgeous reporter Kelsey Cole on the sidelines, my focus on the game takes a backseat to my fascination with her. She’s tiny, smart, and fierce, and she makes me feel young again. Only one problem: she hates football—with good reason, too. Still, you don’t become a champion quarterback without learning how to fight for what you want. Football’s always come first, but Kelsey might be the one to change that. Kelsey
The last thing I need is to get involved with huge and handsome quarterback Daniel Harrison. Under all those muscles he’s hiding charm and a surprising intellect— an irresistible combination. I can’t deny our chemistry, but I can’t stand what he does for a living. Not to mention, once the internet starts shipping us, the spotlight becomes unbearable. The fans will hate me even more when they find out I’m writing a piece that could leave the league they love in shambles. There’s no future for the hot quarterback and I— so why can’t I say goodbye? Against The Clock is a spicy adult sports football romance with dual POV and a guaranteed HEA.

Arc Review

“I’m all fucking in with Kelsey Cole, and she has no fucking clue.“

Tropes: age gap, sports romance, and very insta lovey.

Investigative reporter Kelsey Cole meets PRO quarterback Daniel Harrison. ATC - is a contemporary rom-com with a a sprinkle of spice. The two had a cute little meet cue. You know with Daniel totally tackling her to the ground.

Daniel was the epitome of a man who knows what he wants. He was relentless and unapologetic pursuing Kelsey. It was very “love at first sight” vibes.

I really admired Kelsey’s bravery regarding the piece she wrote exposing the football league, regardless of dating a professional football player. I loved that she stood firm in what she believed in and didn’t allow a man to sway her decision.

The storyline developed fairly quickly, there really wasn’t any tension or angst building up to the story. I felt a little more invested in Kelsey’s friend Cameron’s story + even the cheerleader. It all just happened so fast and it didn’t allow for me to connect with the MC’s. It also felt a little unrealistic/over the top at times. While there was a lot of cute moments, I think it fell a little short for me due to the insta-love aspect of it.

To start off, I really went into this book thinking that I would enjoy it. However, I ended up barely being able to finish it.

The relationship between Daniel and Kelsey felt very off to me. There was barely any form of tension between them — it was more-so an insta-love feel, which didn’t work for me. I feel like it would’ve made more sense to see Daniel slowly knock down Kelsey’s walls and form a connection with her even though she hated the idea of him being a football player. Instead, Kelsey pretty much jumps right into a relationship with him even though she repeatedly would talk about how much she hated football because of what happened to her dad. It didn’t make sense to me? I don’t know.

Also, the constant sexual innuendos and comments that Daniel makes throughout the book even after Kelsey brought up that she was worried he only liked her for her body was strange. It made me feel like his feelings for her were very superficial which then made me feel like they had no genuine connection. And, am I the only one that felt like certain scenes between them were kind of awkward at times?

Overall, this wasn’t a book for me and that’s okay! Everyone’s opinions are different and you may end up enjoying it!

this was cute & surprisingly super spicy.

I love a fictional man who knows what he wants (aka Daniel) and goes after it until he gets it.

Some cringe parts, but overall I enjoyed this! Was easy to get through and short chapters, but beware….insta love!!!!!

this was so fun! A football romance with NO third act breakup!!!

When quarterback Daniel Harrison *literally* slams into journalist reporter Kelsey during a live football game, he knows she’s the one and is immediately obsessed with her. The two of them gain a ton of media attraction and start dating. This was super adorable and all around fluffy which was a delight to read.

What to expect:
- insta love (done really well)
- jealousy scenes
- SPICE SPICE BABY (the spice was so hot)
- she wears his jersey and he’s obsessed
- this man is SO down bad for her, he worships the ground she walks on
- GREAT side characters

I really enjoyed this! The writing is a little all over the place in the beginning and the plot is very fast but I had a great time!

Also- the author is teasing 2 other books in this series and I NEED them right now!!

Thanks to the author for a physical copy!🫶🏼

very cringe moments. The man was 39 years old, but for some reason acted like he had never been in a serious relationship in his life (he had an ex-wife and ex-supermodel-gf) yuck. There was no real connection between the two.

cute Instalove football romance

You know the saying “love at first sight” there was never a truer statement for QB Daniel Harrison when he accidentally tackled a news reporter and immediately knew we wanted her.
He would move mountains for her to give him just a chance.
Kelsey was already having a bad day. She hates football for what it did to her family, and when she fills in for a coworker at a football game, her day gets even worse when she’s tackled by a QB.
Only, he promises he’ll do anything to make it up to me, apparently he wasn’t joking.

This football romance has some great tropes. He falls first and he’s OBSESSED, Golden Retriever cinnamon roll MMC, reverse grumpy sunshine, age gap (15 years), and sets up for the next few books in the series.

I overall give it a ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I felt like there were a few loose ends I wanted wrapped up that just were left unanswered. Overall this is a sweet book with surprising spice

RELEASE DAY💚💚💚 (ARC REVIEW)

Kelsey and Daniel had such an interesting way of meeting. I know i shouldn’t but i couldn’t help but laugh.

Daniel is the definition of the he falls first and harder trope because let me tell you, this guy was OBSESSED with Kelsey and knew she was the one for him since the beginning! It's kinda funny because Kelsey's number 1 rule is to never date a football player. This is a challenge Daniel is willing to take.

I love, love, LOVE these characters!!! Daniel is quite the perfect man. He knows what he wants and will do everything to get the girl he likes. He's so respectful and knows how to put Kelsey at ease. I feel like I highlighted every single one of his lines because this man and his words 😮‍💨

Kelsey is such a sweetheart!! The kind of character you can help but love. She looks like the kind of friend I would love to have. She's absolutely ADORABLE but she's also bold and knows when to speak up about what matters to her!!

They both fall for each other pretty fast and even if I would like a little more tension, it worked for me!! This was so easy to read, I got into it really fast and couldn't stop reading!!

𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒊𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆:

▪︎ Pro quarterback x journalist
▪︎ Age gap
▪︎ Praise
▪︎ He falls first

𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔:
This book was funny, emotional, and spicy all in one. Daniel was charismatic, used humour as a defence mechanism sometimes, and wasn't afraid of the 𝘣𝘪𝘨 feelings he developed quickly for Kelsey. Kelsey was intelligent, honest, and could hold her own. Their connection was immediate, their communication wonderful, and their journey was beautiful and powerful. Daniel struggled with what his life would look like after his pro-career, and Kelsey struggled with the danger of the game and the risk Daniel thrust himself into. The spice was delish. The praise and "good girl" got me good. And I liked the enthusiastic consent! I laughed quite a few times during this book; the comedy was written so well. I really felt for Kelsey and her family, and I was rooting for her to succeed with her badass journalistic piece. Cameron was an intriguing character, and I wanted to know more about her story. Rhett was an asshole and made me 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 angry. The writing was flowy, easy to read, and made me want to not put it down. Overall, it was a fun and wholesome read.

This was an ARC read, so thank you to Brittany Kelley for trusting me with this golden nugget. Catch it on release on April 6th!

i’m in the biggest slump of my life so i have no idea how i even finished this book, it was not that good…

i don’t want to be too harsh on the writing since i’m pretty sure this is a debut book but it just wasn’t great. it was incredibly immature and there were too many times that i cringed instead of laughed. the beaver puns were stupid and it wasn’t funny, i also could not read the sentence “good fucking girl” one more time. it felt like this book was doing too much and it was doing all of the things far too quickly. this book was like another level of insta love. so this wasn’t for me but hopefully the next book i read with drag me out of this slump.

Ahhh, i really don't have words.

The age gap trope, the football, the characters, the plot, the spice. Everything was so good!

This is one of the cutest & steamy sports romance books i read!
I loved it omg! It made me giggle, blush and laugh!

Daniel Harrison has my freaking heart, i need one like him in my life AAAAHHH!!! He needs to be protected at all costs!!! He knew he found the one, from the first moment they collided! I loved the effort, the flirting, the humour he had! Daniel being all possessive and protective towards Kelsey was chef's kiss! Him interacting with kids did something to me!

Kelsey is such a compassionate person and a witty, tough as nails gal! She wasn't supposed to be by the sidelines that day but it's like destiny , they had to find eachother! She knew he would be the one, even if she was blinded by her "hatred" for football!

They needed eachother, to heal one another!

The finale really made me emotional 😭!

I love them so much 💓

Thank you Brittany for the ARC 🙏🏻

It's no secret that I'm a sucker for the age gap trope. And if you're into insta love, this is the book for you!

Daniel's so sweet with Kelsey, I can't. The way he falls head over heels for her and never misses an opportunity to show her just that is so wholesome.

Kelsey had major fears about Daniel being a football player, but he nipped them in the bud in his wonderful way.

The spark of their connection immediately jumped out at me, and it was so much fun to read their story.

The side characters were also very lovely and I can't wait for this series to continue so I can get to know the others better.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first book by Brittany Kelley and I was so surprised! Usually I find new-to-me authors can be very hit or very miss. And Brittany was a hit! Against the Clock was funny, heart-warming, and spicy. For the folks that don't enjoy a third act break-up, pick this up because there is no break-up in this one! Kelsey Cole is our FMC and she is a reporter with the local news affiliate. She is writing a story about cheerleaders and the football league (primarily how they are treated by execs etc). Kelsey has a hate relationship with football because of how the league treated her father, so when she falls (pretty much head over heels, literally) for Daniel, she is conflicted.

Daniel Harrison is our quarterback and he is close to retirement. His body doesn't do what it used to and he's finding himself wanting other things from life: mainly Kelsey. When he runs her down on the sidelines, it kickstarts their relationship in spectacular fashion. Daniel and Kelsey fall in love rather quickly. There were a few things I didn't enjoy, but it didn't impact my reading of the book as a whole. I hope that when the book goes through it's last round of edits a few of the "Kelsey Cole's" get removed because my GOD there are too many of them. The beaver puns though? Those can all stay. They were gold!

*Thank you to the author for providing me with a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review

I think I might be a football fan now?! But seriously, this was SO good. Our MMC, Daniel, is a cinnamonrollgoldenretrieversimp and I love how obsessed he is with Kelsey (in a cute way, not a creepy way). They had the perfect meet cute and their story of falling for each other felt so organic. They are truly perfect for each other!

Extra special bonus points to the author who was quietly setting up subsequent books in the background. No spoilers, but I have a feeling Savannah is up to something and I'm VERY excited to see that play out ;)

Give me men who are totally in love with their women please, Daniel my friend here fell hard for Kelsey and we LOVED, god, how did he treat her? How was he so aware of her? I LIVE FOR BOOKS LIKE THESE FULL OF LOVE, so let me tell you this book was SPECTACULAR, I lived my best life with these two!!! Why didn't I give it 5 stars? Well, it has a bit of drama and it's well known that I'm not a big fan of them, but come on, it's just me.

I loved the story of these two, the age gap felt perfect, the insta love is well written, it has good character development and really good spice scenes, what more could you ask for? well, if I want to request a Daniel for me please and thank you.

I look forward to the other books in this series because I love Brittany's way of writing.

-------

Kelsey is an amazing FMC. She is a strong woman who is determined to write a story that deserves to be told. She is witty, a texas girl, loyal, and smart. I love that she won't compromise her morals or relationships for a story, especially since her story about the AFL connects to Daniel. The quarterback who tackled her accidentally during a game and it was love at first tussel. He knew the beautiful blonde was his and despite her beliefs to stay away from everything football, Daniel is just right. Daniel is easy going and as an older man takes care of her in beautiful ways. He is not only a consent king but also an amazing cook. At 39, he is one of the oldest in the NFL and after so many injuries it might be time to hang up the cleats. Daniel is a beautiful man who has so much intergrity, respect, and owns his past mistakes like a morally correct man. He has always put football first, but with Kelsey he wants a life outside of football with the house, kids, and so much more. Now he just needs to get Kelsey on board, which might be difficult since she's has a love-hate relationship with football.

The book is an easy to reas sports romance with amazing quotes and steamy scenes. We all want the guy who will fight for us but also respects our limits. Daniel knows what he wants and would do anything to make Kelsey comfortable in his life.

Overall, a great 4 star read!!

"You're spoiling me."
"You deserve to be spoiled. That's what girlfriends are for."

Against The Clock is a sports romance novel with the quarterback-reporter dynamic. This book for me was a quick and easy read which not only helped me get out of a slump but to stay out of it! There were so many cute moments in this book that had me giggling and kicking my feet. However, their relationship was insta-love, which I'm not a fan of. I love the yearning, the pining, the tension. . . . With this book, there was none of that. So if you're not a fan of insta-love, maybe this book isn't for you. Anyways, I pushed that aside and continued on with the book. I thought it was cute, I loved the friend dynamic with the other characters, so that's a plus.

Overall this book was really cute but I felt as if there were a few things missing. Excited to see what comes next!
