The first book is the tamest. It introduces you to everyone and their place in the story. The series gets steadily darker as it goes.
If you need trigger warnings, don't read this book. This is your only warning.
In a world where the strong rule and the weak have no rights, Lashiel, a mixed blood demon princess was deemed a weak failure by her father. Suffering through years of abuse, her only hope was for a political marriage that would free her from her abusive father and brothers. However, such a dream was beyond her reach as she is sold off to a foreign land that is ruled by a monster! The King, who's terror is known far and wide, reigns over his kingdom with bloody claws and a never ending rage. Will Lashiel be able to survive his wrath and find her freedom or will she be cursed to forever pay a price in blood?
But if you can stomach the bad grammar, the author oversharing everything, the lack of commas and the side characters randomly starting to monologue, this series doesn't have the worst plot and lore setup.
In fact, I have read less interesting plots with beautiful writing and I have to question - which is worse? It really depends on my mood, it seems. Because in this case the bad writing didn't stop me from finishing the book!
It just reads like a machine translated chinese webnovel. That kinda sucks, but everyone starts somewhere.
I had to finally dnf this at 40%. I tried so fckn hard to push thru and finish it but girl the COMMAS. THEY ARE NONEXISTENT. And then suddenly, they’re thrown in there at the most random of places. Where anyone who graduated high school would never dream to place a comma. This shít had me grinding my teeth. I could actively feel it putting me in a reading slump. If you have elementary level punctuation/grammar skills, and the most atrocious lack thereof will bother you in the least: do not read this book. I’ve never done this before, but I feel so wronged by this shít stain of a book that I’m counting it as “read” because I feel like I’m owed restitution and that is the bare goddamn minimum. I’m genuinely so livid that this was written so poorly that I couldn’t finish it.
Also love that the author is in a book group I’m in on fb so they declined my post *nicely* warning people about how bad this book is lmao. I get it, it’d be awkward, but to the author: get an editor, even just a friend with a better grasp on language arts, to proofread any next pieces. And if you don’t, pls stop self rec-ing this anywhere lol.
The plot wasn’t great because there wasn’t one. Yes, Lashiel was abused and then bought by this dragon king who treats her right but that’s about it. I won’t read the other book because I don’t want or need to. The POVs were all over the place with no clear distinction or pattern. Also, the world building and character development were severely lacking. I didn’t actually know anything about any of the characters or how they were supposed to act. The emotions were very robotic. A character would do something and act one way and then *snap* they would do something and act differently and I didn’t really understand. For example, when they went into town, Demere went off to fight and there was a whole scene about the fight but it came out of nowhere. I don’t even know who Demere actually is, but he would get randomly mad and the fight scene was absolutely useless in giving me more info. I couldnt get a read on which characters liked Lashiel and you’d think that some of them would like her by the end of the book, but I have no idea. Charis is my least favorite character because he doesn’t seem like a good person and the back and forths of his personality give me whiplash. He is sometimes kind, but his thoughts about women and how he treats Lashiel are so backwards I can never predict the kind of person he will be or what his actions will be. Also, Zeref’s mood was ever changing and it annoyed me. He’s be sweet and soft and then immediately turn to some kind of uncontrollable beast who needed to basically bruise Lashiel to calm down. The way this author wrote these transitions lacked any kind of emotion. I wasn’t scared or worried about what would happen. The ending was supposed to be some sort of climax I think, but it didn’t come across as anything other than Zeref having another tantrum? Like, nothing happened and he went ballistic and then gave her the option to leave it was ridiculous. It was very cliche in the “this is the face of a killer, Bella” kind of way making it practically satire.
The main character, Lashiel, has been through hell. I'm so beyond tired of characters having traumatic backstories, yet ZERO trauma. This series is different. After years of abuse, physical, sexual, and emotional, our main character has a lot of triggers and issues to work through. She's not terrified and then magically fine 3 pages later like you see in so many other books. The main love interest, Zeref, loves her and is willing to become and do whatever he needs to in order to keep her safe, and their slow progress makes my heart happy. He helps her work thru her triggers, works to instill confidence and self worth in her when she's been taught her entire life that she's useless. Many people don't understand the self esteem issues that long term abuse brings, and I feel like the author did an amazing job showing that side of things in this series.
It's a dark world. The main couple aren't abusive, but the fantasy world itself is ROUGH to say the least. I encourage people to read trigger warnings, but do understand that it's not a dark romance, where the main couple is abusive to one another. It's dark fantasy WITH romance. There's definitely main characters you're not going to like, decisions made that you won't agree with, and I found myself enjoying the unpredictability of that, even when I hated the character and their actions.
The writing style is different to what I'm used to, but once I read a few chapters, I found myself really liking it. You know how multiple characters are feeling at once, not just one person, and you're getting constant insights into each character and their personalities, worries, desires, etc.
The story was good, but I am struggled with the constant use of “…” An ellipsis should only be used when there is a halt in a thought or to shorten a sentence to avoid unnecessary verbiage. However, the author uses this in almost every single verbal interaction or statement. Definitely grammatically incorrect. I’m not sure if an editor got ahold of this book, but they should have told the author or edited this. As an author myself, I am finding it tough to read through because it’s so over used. I also noticed the lack of commas as well. I hated DNFing, but I couldn’t handle the grammatical errors.
Lashiel is a mixed blood demon princess with no rights. She’s about to be married off in a contract to a monster king. The upside is that she will escape the familial abuse she has suffered at the hands of her father and brother. We also see that her own mother is in chains and lies tortured. The downside is what she might encounter with this king. Will she charm him and escape his wrath or become another in a long line of victims. Triggers would be family abuse and lack of freedom. Interesting start to a series, but Lashiel comes off as being a bit too weak and helpless. I would like to see the demon side stand up and take names rather than hoping for a savior.
I met this author at a local author event. I happily purchased all of her books and, in less than twenty-four hours, have finished the first one! Her writing is on point, and the stories are amazingly told. I'm honestly happy that it's the weekend, and I can dig into the other books.
It's a sloooow burn but oh so worth it! I'm used to mouthy strong Fmc so this was refreshing to see Vulnerability. I read it in one day stealing chapters in-between life's normal demands and man oh man I NEED the second book ASAP!!
I enjoyed this book. It's not my usual read. However, I really liked the world building, the characters, and the story. I'm really looking forward to reading where this series is going.
I enjoyed the story but the writing needs work. Switching POV multiple times between multiple characters with no transition was confusing during a conversation. Pick one POV at a time!
I could not put this down. I absolutely loved it and can not wait to start the next one. This author is so descriptive and the characters are very dynamic and relatable. Highly recommend
A spooky tale with lots of unforseeable circumstances. I love an emotional tale that keeps you reading. An interesting fantasy world full of unforgettable characters.
I want to love this book but the only evidence of the FMC age makes it seem she is 16 and I am uncomfortable with reading a book for a mature audience featuring a minor.

I loved this book. The trauma, the tenderness, the fears. Everything about this book was so well done. It's not part of my normal genre of book, but I know I'm about to binge this series
