The Red House #1

The Red House: Almost a Memoir

Rate this book
The Red House is for those who yearn to relive the old days and for those who wished they had.

A family comedy that’s a cross between Little House on the Prairie and The Cosby Show with a whole lot of Hee Haw trucking mud right down the middle!
Flying chickens, resilient roaches, humiliating hooptys, crazy relatives and runaway mules are just some of the hilarious hi-jinks the Douglas family get up to in a bid to get back to the land and “escape” modern life in the 1980s.

The country...

Country housing: “The Red House had roaches. Long, flat brown ones—with wings. We didn’t know they could fly until we were having supper one day.”

Country fashion: "If I stepped wide enough maybe the panty hose would stay up until I could get to the bathroom."

Country entertainment: “Grab that skinny one in the corner. He oughta fly real good.”

Country relatives: “Watch yourself, boy! We still payin off your rabies shot.”

Country vacations: “You brought your own housing...and food and shampoo and towels and sheets.”

Country revivals: “We gonna start promptly at seven o’clock, so be sure to take care of all your bodily needs and functions beforehand.”

Country shopping: “Don’t steal nothin and don’t sit on the toilet.”

Country dining at its best: “The day he mentioned stewed possum, Mama told him, “Don’t even think about puttin somethin that nasty in my pot. We may be country but we ain’t that country.”

CHARMAINE DAVIS writes black woman white man (bwwm) romance, family comedy, middle-grade fiction, speculative fiction, issues dealing with the Christian life and devotionals.

Charmaine Davis's romances typically feature black women and white men (bwwm), number one because she’s a black woman married to a white man for 23 years, and number two, she desires to connect the black woman and the white man in an equal, loving, and romantic relationship that is counter to their historical narratives as black woman as victim and white man as predator. Her hope is that eventually all colors will bleed into one and humanity will once again live as one blood.

Charmaine’s stories have been praised as “refreshing!”, “uplifting”, “thought-provoking”, and “laugh out loud!”

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would think that this book is a good read. Fortunately, the author makes it clear that this book is NOT autobiographical. I am a Southerner & everyone I know would say that, "the family in the book acts like they don't have a lick of common sense, behaves like they're pure t trailer trash, & that they best be on their knees praying that The Good Lord really does look out for animals & fools". Readers be warned: there is an abundance of animal cruelty described in this book. And no, I am not some namby, pamby tree hugger.

A most entertaining, enlightening, comical read! Amazing they all made it and reminded me of our old cottage way back in the 50's - no plumbing, no running water, no electricity! Difficult to believe that people lived like that in the 1980’s! Was sorry when it ended! A really good read and am looking forward to finding more by Charmaine T. Davis!
