In the picture-perfect seaside village of Lady Helen, South Africa, Monica Brunetti has the life of her dreams—two adopted sons, fulfilling work, loyal friends and a special closeness with her former housekeeper, Francina. What's more, she's in love.
Then everything comes tumbling down. Monica's happiness is destroyed by a young girl's resentment. Francina, too, is plunged into grief. And a series of crimes rocks the village. Yet Monica must go on, as a mother and a journalist and a woman of faith—who believes, even in her darkest hour, that the risks of love are worth taking.
It started out slow and was hard to get into. It picked up the farther it got into the story. Overall, it ended up being a positive book but the blurb gives it more mystery and call for drama than there is.
Love this series. Great ending to a three-book series about a young, white S.African woman. Lots of secondary characters. Wonderful descriptions of S. Africa and its culture.
The 3rd book in the continuing story of Monica Brunetti, and her two adopted sons. Living in a small coastal town in South Africa with a job running the local paper. This is a fun series.
Makes me want to pull out a map to study first the geography of South Africa and then delve into the history: abalone harvesting, political asylum, Zulu/Christian traditions, what is Afrikaans, expression of Christianity in South Afrida. The characters are ones I would personally enjoy meeting. They seem like real, plausible people.
