“Mmm, my good girl. All mine to use. To spoil. To fucking destroy. You’re going to be on your knees begging for me for more, aren’t you?”

I love a stalker trope, but this also had a sort of paranormal aspect to it as well. This story is so well done, I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next.

I love Sly, who wouldn’t? He’s so intense, brutal and possessive i don’t blame Maeve for wanting to keep his attention. Maeve was a badass bitch who matched him perfectly.

This book was FOR ME! I literally loved every second of this. The writing is beautiful and I loved the twisted romance that didn’t flinch away from being exactly what it was.

Thoughts:
* There is a good amount of editing mistakes in the book. Ie Mauve instead of Maeve or back instead of black.
*Maeve is such a baddie. That scene at 46% is perfection
* There is a 3rd act falling out but it's quickly wrapped up
*There is a 3rd act falling out but it wraps up wonderfully.
* You do kind of know the plot towards the end of the book but there is a little twist at the end. So keep reading.

“I chose you because I am the moon and you are the sky in which I hang, so be silent, mi cielo. Now is not the time for questions that will go unanswered. The only thing I want to hear from you now is ‘yes Sly.’"

//

Despite the handful of grammatical and formatting errors that would sometimes pop up, this novella was a good one. It was a pleasant mash up of the stalker trope with all of the spookiness of the darker holidays. I wasn't expecting for there to be as much plot in it as there was, but it was definitely a pleasant surprise for sure.

I really liked Sly as our main love interest. He was intense, possesive, a realist, and just a touch feral--as all the best ones are. A perfect match for Maeve who was the definition of a Brat™️ if I'd ever seen one. Maeve definitely gave as good as she got, however I felt like some of her reactions to things/situations were slightly over the top to the point that sometimes I'd get emotional whiplash, and wondered if I'd missed something.

A very solid debut, and I'm hoping to see whatever else Dead Petals has for us in the future.

//

"It's been gone for days, silly girl. Haven't been keeping track, have we?" His hand falls to the front of his pants to adjust himself as he jeers, "stop being stupid and take your shirt off before I start to get impatient. I want to see what's mine. You already said it yourself; you wanted this." What have I gotten myself into?

Dark Stalker Romance ✔️
Spooky Halloween vibes ✔️
Taboo aspects ✔️
Yummy Smut ✔️
HOT Morally Grey MMC ✔️
Plot w/ a twist ✔️
A FMC who isn’t afraid to shed some 🩸 ✔️
This and so much more is what I loved about In the Dead of Night. Maeve was interesting and relatable, Sly was patient and mysterious till the very end.
With that being said I absolutely adored Maeve’s nickname for the MMC.

This book was one of my favorite novellas I have read recently. I usually feel like novellas skip a lot of time or feel very rushed but this felt perfectly paced. It kinda gave a haunting Adeline or her soul to take vibe with the main male watching from a distance before coming face to face with the main male. The twist at the end was so good and had me crying! If you are looking for a quick spooky read for spooky season definitely check this out!

Nice little spooky novella. Had to laugh at the line “always watching” popping up quite a lot. Reminded me of the old grouchy lady from Monsters Inc.

So much story in a novella.

This is a debut book that does NOT read as first work!

We have Maeve who is lonely since her grandmothers passing and has come to realize she has a stalker. At first she thought she was going crazy but when dead animals started showing up on her dining room table and dishes were being washed it confirmed her suspicions.

The writing in this was a beautiful mix of mystery and poetic cadence with a dash of horror thrown in with a twist ending you won’t see coming. I really loved how the one scene Maeve takes back her power against Sly (her stalker) and makes for this tension filled lustful encounter in the kitchen where Sly is tied to a chair unable to move.

If you love stalkers, novellas, strong FMC’s, spooky setting, -touch her you die- vibes, and some hot spice then you need to check this out!!

'Tis the season for Spooky!

This book was a rad read for sure. It was spooky, sexy, and darkly romantic with an unhinged St@lk3r. It's definitely a DARK ROMANCE. Know that going in. I'd take note of trigger warnings.

Important to know this didn’t hit my limit but it was close (You are, however, provided with more than enough warning, and by entering this book, you acknowledge that risk like I did.)

I enjoyed it. I liked the stalker trope to the boxer it revolves around and I liked the switching nature of the relationship throughout the book.

There was a third act falling out, but it’s wrapped up quite well and so it’s not necessarily deterrence

If anything, I do the ending confused me slightly towards the end, it was about three in the morning and I will begin to skim read so perhaps that’s why I was a bit confused but I’m sure if you’re focusing like she probably should on this book back at the beginning in the middle bit was really good Then you won’t be confuse

I’m not too sure I would re read this book, which is why I have not rated it higher, but I think many people would enjoy it if they knew it was here

"I chose you because I am the moon and you are the sky in which I hang, so be silent, mi cielo.”

This was one of the most f-up story/novellas I’ve read.
The main leads dynamic reminded me of the Cat & Mouse Duet.

A Dark Stalker Romance.
I went blind into this sorry, and I devoured it.

Maeve Blackstone is a loner from a very young age. She was bullied for being different (ex: halloween costumes being creative and unique).

And so after her grandmother’s passing she has been pretty much a loner. Until one day, she feels someone is following her. This stalking has been going on for quite a while. At first, Mae was terrified but little by little she got intrigued and was really I mean really into it(deep down).
One day, they finally cross path. Mae realizes that ML wears a mask and is heavily tattooed.

The love interest? Sly is a “unique” dark love interest. He knows that his mind is fucked but he can’t seem to help himself to want and posses her. He is really possessive of her and was willing to kill anyone who tries to touch or harm her. And he does.

And when he first saw her, he knew that she was his “She is my queen. My enchantress. Holding me in a
bewitchment from which I cannot escape.”

His obsessive is f-up but so weirdly hot(again this is a dark romance).
He has ways with words and has a filthy mouth:
“If I ever see another man with his hands on you again—I'll shit his fucking throat and let him bleed out all over your naked, bound body.
Then, as his heart stops beating, I'll fuck you in a pool of his blood till you scream out my name.
And that, my love, is a fucking promise.”

.
This man would bring her dead animals so that she could take its bones and keep it as house deco. They are so f-up that they are meant for each other.
4.75⭐️
.25 because of the insta love.

TW: sexual content; animal cruelty; rape attempt (not between mls); stalking; murder; knife play; blood; cult grooming

"The things you make me want to do... I would kill for you, fucking die for you; pour gasoline on this godforsaken house and burn it to the ground if you ever tried to leave me. Your soul belongs to me; our paths forever tangled together like a chaotic, knotted mess of rope. You'll never find this with anyone else."- Sly

TRIGGER WARNING:
- Attempted SA (not between MCs)
- Using an innocent person to incite jealousy
- mentions of religious abuse in childhood

Toxic love story between a strange stalker and his equally strange opponent (prey?).
I know this is bad, but I loved it so much. It was refreshing to have a normal weird girl as the FMC.
The element of witchery was awesome!
Thankfully, this book does not include the biggest issue with stalker romances: the FMC's "I don't like this, but why are my thighs squeezing together" moments. She admits that maybe she shouldn't like the situations, but she doesn't shy from them. She takes what she wants and does what she wants.

There is a moment that, to me, personally, is unforgiveable of the FMC in regards to a supporting character. Using someone in that way to make another jealous is just a big no-no.
But, boy, was it a wild ride!

I debated on giving this a 4 star because there were a couple spelling errors, and the MMC seemed a little dramatic when it came to his "I could never love you like you need" speeches. After hearing his backstory, it makes a little sense, but still. It was an eyeroll for sure. Some of the dramatic speeches were sweet though!

A dark, modern day Romeo and Juliet kind of vibe... if Romeo and Juliet were regular, insane people.

This book had me in a chokehold from start to finish! I couldn’t stop reading this novella. Perfect for spooky season this book was twisty, creepy, suspenseful, violent, and very spicy. Maeve has always been the weird one. She has never fit in so she keeps to herself. Despite the fact that she excepts that others just don’t get her she is still very lonely. That is until she notices that she is being followed. Most sane people would be terrified and contact authorities right away but Maeve isn’t quite sane. She finds a twisted comfort in knowing that someone is watching her and so she watches back. After being chased in the woods back to her home she finally meets the man that has stalked her for months. Sly is not a good man and doesn’t plan on ever being good. He grew up in a twisted cult and now has a darkness in him that can’t be shaken. When he happens to see Maeve one day in the forest he is instantly obsessed with her. Sly finally shows himself to his obsession but is taken by surprise when she willingly becomes his prey. The two of them play a game of cat and mouse, tormenting and teasing each other. The chemistry between Maeve and Sly is electric and I couldn’t help but be sucked into their toxic and violent love. This dark romance is the perfect Halloween book to read if you are looking for something spooky and spicy. I would definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy macabre vibes, touch her and literally die, major sexual tension, stalker who is also being stalked, masked man, and superb dirty talking.

I LOVE a stalker romance. This novella was a very fun and steamy one! This follows Mae who is an outsider and a plain “weirdo”. Mae’s fave hobby is taxidermy and making things out of animal bones. She gives off hella witchy vibes. I mean not really “vibes” because it’s a fact lol. Mae notices that she is being followed by a mysterious man who she names Sly. Sky has no idea that Mae knows that she is being stalked. One evening Mae gets tired of Sly creeping around and wants his full attention.. after that Mae finds out just how obsessed Sly is with her.

I loved this novella so dang much! I really enjoyed watching Mae become more confident in herself and taking what she wants. The HEA at the end was sooo good. I wish there was more of these 2!

Fave quote: "I think I like this feisty side of you. Not such a good girl after all, are we? I should’ve known you had a black heart… That you’re fucked up just like me."

Plot: 4/5⭐️
Spice: 3 🌶️
Overall: 4.5 ⭐️

WOW WOW WOW. SUCH A GREAT DARK NOVELLA.

discovered this thru booktok & definitely am not disappointed! the dark elements, the smut, the plot twist??? LOVE IT!

“Each dark, wavy hair on her head is spun from celestial thread; every speck of her dreamy flesh carved cautiously of rose quartz. Her tourmaline eyes glaze over and reflect the pale moon at night, shifting to sparkle and glint in the warm beams of the sun.” THE DESCRIPTION MY GOSH!!!! get yourself a morally grey man who describes you as so 🖤🖤

Mae is such a beautifully curated character along with Sly/Roman who has a dark past who is willing to overcome it for her. I’m such a sucker for such storylines and this novella is definitely one of my favourites novellas. Such amazing quotes in it as well which I really love 🫶🏻 The spicy scenes are definitely spicy and this definitely reminds me of the Cat & Mouse Duet by H.D Carlton, though this novella is different on it’s own

Can’t wait to read more from the author! 🥰

Omg 😭
I don’t know where to start. It didn’t feel like a novella. It hurt my heart and healed it in a way I definitely wasn’t prepared for. ❤️‍🩹
The first chapter gives you everything you need to know, Maeve has a stalker, she knows he’s around, she wants him, but she knows that’s wrong, AND she doesn’t give a fuck. It’s written like a poem, like a love story to those of us that feel more comfortable alone but also feel lonely. Wow.
This book could have been 600 pages, the only plot being Maeve softening Sly’s heart, and I would have eaten up every damn page.
When this…thing happened near the end (I won’t spoil) I was damned near inconsolable. That would have been such a tragic, beautiful ending 💔 BUT I shouldn’t have underestimated Maeve and her cleverness.
I fell in love with both characters.
I want more immediately.
Read this book.

2.5 ⭐️ We started off pretty strong but we eventually went downhill. The writing was lovely. I rlly appreciated Dead Petals poetic and intricate use of language; it carried the tone of the story well, making it flow nicely. However the dialogue - specifically from Sly/Roman - well short. His lines were for the most part cringy and by the time we got to the murder n violence, i was left dissatisfied :/
Its not an necessarily a bad read, and ill give it props for fitting in fair bit of storyline in a short story.
an extended version may be cool 🤷🏽‍♀️

I should have expected the ending based on the book being a dark romance, but I truly wanted the twist to be the real ending. hesitant to rate this at all because I know my rating would be biased (I usually steer clear of this genre). I would've loved if this was some kind of psychological thriller, but the writing was good and I definitely felt every emotion with the FMC. if the author came out with a second or unrelated book, I'd probably read it.

TLDR; 3.75/5 not my genre, but the only dark romance I've read and enjoyed.

Sly is arrogant in this way, blind to the fact that I steadily wait for him to pounce. I too am a hunter; I simply conduct my prowling in a different manner. The feigned artlessness I present is designed to lull him into a false sense of superiority. So, I ask myself… Which of the two of us will play the role of mouse?

The Good:
- Absolutely not what I thought this book would be about
- Unpredictable ending
- Interesting characters
- Good smut

The Bad:
- Could be shorter
- Not incredibly memorable

The Ugly:
- Nothing really

i am all for stalker romance but this one's with a twist, oh how i love being a woman. Sly thinking he's got her right where he wants her and her being oh no you don't.... I really like how they both have their darker moments, sly a bit more than her but oh well i'm not complaining! ( wink wink ) The end had me baffled, didn't see that coming at all but i LOVED it! It is only her pov until the last chapter, how i wished i could have read that man's secrets thoughts... i bet it would have been delicous! But he is very vocal about his stance so that made up for it.
