I’ve seen Throwing Heat and Miracle Man, the more widely circulated of Nolan Ryan’s at-least three (maybe more) autobiographies before, so when I saw the jacket featured Ryan in and Angel’s uniform I knew that I was into something special.
The book is a co-auto biography, with Nolan and his wife Ruth providing alternating narratives from life in small town Alvin, to the minors, to the NY Mets and then off to Anaheim. Also, DYK that Ruth Ryan also has her own ‘Nolan and me’ autobiography? It’s true.
The book leaves you hanging on, not sure if his four no-hitters will be the pinnacle of a successful career or if years from now they will make documentaries about Frank Tannana.
This book provides interesting insight into a giant in the history of baseball and a glimpse into a still young man dealing with fame and the demands that accompany success.
If you like baseball, pitching or Nolan. Pick up this book. If you are a Gil Hodges fan, you might want to pass on this one. Like Hodges passed on a young pitcher named Nolan Ryan.
