Beneath the Silence

Rate this book
Selflessness has always been the motto Eden Foster lived by. Raised in a household that instilled the mantra of family over everything, the up-and-coming MMA fighter has made a living using her fists while sticking her neck out for people who would never do the same for her.

A childhood filled with neglect led Hakeem Biggers down a path of darkness. One full of sins and misdeeds. Uncontrollable anger and rage ruled him for so long that he now chooses to experience the world as an onlooker rather than a participant, trapped beneath a veil of silence.

But then the two individuals known for violence run into one another. Mistrustful by nature, they engage in a dance that soon turns into one that is anything but casual. Feelings neither of them anticipate creep up, giving them hope of a love they once thought impossible to obtain.

Two dark souls haunted by the sins of their past.

Two individuals seeking atonement.

A connection that might not withstand the blows life seems determined to throw.

Beneath the Silence is book three of The Thing Unseen series, but it ends on a cliffhanger and will conclude in book four.

This book contains angst, child neglect/abuse, sexually explicit content, violence, gaslighting, profanity, and mentions of murder/death.

I’ve got a lot to say so, bare with me. Young Eden…… lets talk about her. I spent a lot of time straddling the fence about Eden. Most of the time, I absolutely loved and adored her but, other times I was completely disgusted with her people pleasing ways. Eden was a part-time MMA fighter and a full-time people pleaser. She just had the hardest time saying no to the very people who stabbed her in the back, betrayed her, broke her heart, and gave her their azz to kiss. “I realized today that everything I did was with the hopes that the people I loved would finally love me back. I mean… they loved me but not like I loved them. Not nearly as much because anytime a sacrifice needed to be made, it was always me. They treat me like shit but I’m the first person they run to when they need something. All I have are fucked up, unbalanced relationships but I’m too stupid or desperate to cut the cord.” Eden was well aware her family was trash but, no matter how much she wanted to, she just couldn’t tell them no. Her enabling azz mama constantly preached “family over everything” to the point where Eden couldn’t turned her back on them even when they deserved it. My resentment for her family runs deep to the point that, it’s on sight for anyone whose last name is Foster.

Add to that, the damn 400s just won’t let Eden live in peace. Eight years later, she’s still paying for her “freedom” from these bum azz ninjas who have no real intentions of letting her truly leave the fold. Eden is inked so, it’s gang gang for life which means, there’s only one way out. Other than her nephews and competing, the only other bright spot in her life is Hakeem. These two were instantly drawn to each other from the moment their eyes connected across the gym. Eden and Hakeem could sense the darkness and pain in one another and they just wanted to heal and be each other’s peace. Given how closed off he is from everyone, other than his crew, Hakeem was not only shocked at his attraction to the spitfire MMA fighter but, that he actually wanted to build a future with her. I was so proud of Hakeem for pouring into their relationship and willing to give it a chance. These feelings were foreign to him so, he was learning to love and be loved as his attraction to Eden grew.

With his background, he didn’t think this kind of happiness was possible for him. I won’t go into details about how horrible his mama was but, just know, that heffa bumped Johnika for the number spot as trash azz parents. She who didn’t even have a name definitely earned that crown and title. I appreciate the author putting Hakeem’s trauma on page so that we know what actually happened to him as a child and why he is the way he is as an adult. The flashbacks were definitely the cornerstone of his childhood needed to understand who Hakeem Biggers is. She didn’t do that in Remedy’s story and, I was beyond pissed off about that so, kudos to the author for coming correct in Hakeem’s story.

Secrets from her past threatens to destroy Eden’s happiness with Hakeem. Will he be able to look past her lies by omission and save our girl from the 400s or will Hakeem allow his anger and pride to let him walk away from the best thing that’s ever happened to him?!!! Only time will tell and part two of course. Beneath the Silence was everything I anticipated it to be and more. Once again, the writing and character development were beautifully done. The way K. Lashaun humanized these complex and complicated characters was phenomenal. You’ll fall in love with their vulnerability, you’ll be frustrated at their stubbornness, and you will definitely root for their HEA. Thank you to K. Lashaun for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am floored. I feel drained and emotionally exhausted because this book took me through it....through all of it. And I'd do it all over again….cliffhanger and all.

The author created three exceptional men who are impossible to choose from. I knew Hakeem was going to steal my heart the moment he started playing that Candy Crush game in the first book. It was confirmed that he did, in fact, steal my heart in this book.
Hakeem was this gentle giant, quiet, observant soul…unless poked. You don't want that. Life wasn't kind at all to Hakeem growing up. His mother was disgusting. She was the definition of trash. The absolute worst. I had never wanted Karma on a person as much as I wanted it for his mother. Verse's beautiful heart didn't start after he made it big in the industry. Verse has always been that dude since childhood. I loved knowing how Keem, Verse, and Gia came to be. It makes me understand his loyalty to them better. Hakeem, although had his internal demons he's fighting, he's still fearless and feared by most. Hakeem is that niğĝa. He's someome you want on your side. His past is slowly creeping up to the surfac, and now a lot more is at stake, cause his heart, whether he knows it or not, is involved.
Her name is Eden.
“I’d like to think that what I feel for her is love. But even if it isn’t, or even if I'm not fully capable… everything I have is hers.” (Ch.37 Pg.358)
Eden, an MMA fighter, was a firecracker, a badass. She was strong and broken all at the same time. When it comes to Eden, it's use, use and abuse. Even by the people who were supposed to love her and be for her. Her mother…horrible. Her sister...awful, tragic, grim. I hated her. Passionately hated her. I wanted her and Eden in a box ring for a good 10 minutes, just the two of them.
But Eden's heart was in human form was her nephews. Everything she did was for them. Oh, how she loved them. When she met Hakeem, it was an immediate attraction. On both sides, and neither could explain it. But things started hitting the fan when their past started coming to light. They realized they have a crazy connection and have a lot more in common than they could possibly have known.

This book was not at all what I expected. It was dark. Not in a gruesome, trauma filled way. It was just a somber book. I expected to get to know Hakeem as he navigates healing from his past while trying to deal with real love for the first time. Of course, I expected a few bumps on the road, but I didn't expect these twists and drama plot. Don't get me wrong. I loved every bit of it. This author has become one of my favorites ever since the first book came out. This installment remains very high on my favorites list, even though I'm left high and dry on a cliffhanger until the next book comes out. I know I'm going to lose my mind waiting on part 2 like I did waiting for part one. But it's ok, I already know part 2 will be packed with all the shenanigans and drama and I cannot wait. If you haven't gotten to this series, please start now.

This story started a bit slow for me and initially hard to follow….Once the previous characters were constantly being mentioned, it jogged my memory of previous stories lines….Eden is really dealing with a lot….I think if I were her…I probably would have beat my parents up too😂….Lawd knows they deserve it….the only people in her life that deserve any grace is Isaiah and Jayce….Hakeem is still dealing with some residual issues from is past….but, it seems he’s coping a lot better than Eden….I love the two of them together but Eden’s half truths and lack of information has caused a rift between them….I can’t wait to see what happens next…because unfortunately, this is a cliffhanger….Hopefully it won’t be that long and I will remember the story.

Eden the Menace 💛 Hakeem the Reaper

I know I’m always saying I love books that make me feel but mannnnn 😩 I really have to give credit to the author’s writing because how did you have me going from being annoyed with Eden’s people pleasing behind to loving her and rooting for her so hard? Not to mention she was a badass fmc - a MMA fighter with a very dark past. The people in her life were literally sucking her dry and what did she do every time? Lay down and take it.

And oh, Hakeem. The protector. Mr. If I Say I’m Going To Do It, It’s Done. I want nothing but happiness for this guy! I enjoyed watching Eden chip away at the ice around his heart. He’s been through sooo much. I’m glad I read this after the last book was published because I need to know how they are going to get over all of these obstacles.

This book gave me anxiety. I don’t understand why the women in these books hold onto secrets the way they do when they have men capable of making things shake. After seeing what Hakeem did for Eden with her manager and contract, she should have been singing like a bird. No way would I stay in that mess longer than necessary. Oh and Eden’s family, HOT MF Garbage! The whole Fk’ing family minus the nephews. That sister Madi would have been buried 6 ft under a sewage system and the rest of the family could eat bullets too. Rome deserves a special kind of hell, like literally everyone Eden was connected to was trash!

“I’d like to think that what I feel for her is love. But even if it isn’t, or even if I'm not fully capable… everything I have is hers.” 🥰❤️

I had to sit with these two for a moment before I could write this review. When I tell you this book pulled at every possible emotion 🗣️ IT PULLED AT EVERY POSSIBLE EMOTION!!!! I’m lost and cannot be found 🤣😩 🗣️ughhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

They say opposites attract but in this case, two dark tortured souls were drawn to each other like a moth to a flame. We knew that Hakeem was dark from previous books but learning why ripped me to shreds do you hear me 🗣️RIPPED!!!!! Who wouldn’t be dark and closed off after the trauma he endured in those formative years where you’re supposed to be nurtured and cared for and poured into. Poor Hakeem didn’t get anything remotely closed to that! He had two brothers that tried their best and friends that later became his family but his mother was scum on the bottom of a shoe. I loved seeing how Verse and Gia became apart of Hakeem’s life! He really needed that and I’m able to better understand the strength of their bond 30+ years later. Hakeem wasn’t a man of many words but when he did speak, it was with purpose and you listened.

Eden Eden Eden!!! My girl was dealt a shitty hand no doubt. As an undefeated MMA fighter she gets her strength from doling out pain to anyone foolish enough to step in that cage. Outside of Moe and her nephews that she loves with every fiber of her being, everyone else in her life was hot garbage and needed to form a single file line as they jumped off the tallest building head first!! She legit had no one in her corner while being the foundation that held everyone else together. Out of everyone, Madi takes the cake! I’d forget she was my sister and it would be 🗣️ON SIGHT every time we crossed paths! 🗣️EVERYTIME!!!!

Keem and Eden had an undeniable pull towards each other. Maybe it was the dark elusive aura they shared or maybe it was their need for something genuine and pure to call their own. Whatever it was, neither of them could deny it. Unfortunately their pasts collided with the present and threatened to destroy everything they thought they could have with each other. I’m rooting so hard for these two and can’t wait to see them win in book two!

I could not wait for Hakeem's story, but at the same time, I was cautious going into it! I could sense that something heavy happened to him, and wasn't sure if I was prepared for it! We picked up right at the end of Remedy's book, and I am already on edge! What happened???

As we slowly learn bits and pieces of Hakeem's past, my heart is being stripped bare! Just how does a person who births a child behave this way, and treat her baby like ish? Not only that, but sits idly by and allows others to partake as well! Ughhhh.... 🤬 Hakeem, was forced to navigate his life alone, as he had no one to help and guide him; until he met Gia and Verse. Thank God for those two and the uptown family they built. They were just what he needed, and loved him just the way he was! Now, Keem has some parts of him that are terrifying, but underneath he is a gentle giant, who wants to be loved!

Eden! Why did I just want to hug and comfort her? She felt like the little sister I never had, and wanted to protect! She has a heart of gold, will give you the shirt off her back, a people pleaser, all for those who would never reciprocate for her! If rolling up on a fictional family was a person, I am she and she is me! Between her punk ass parents, her trifling sister and brother, they all could get it! After that scene in her parents house, I was ready to set fire to that b***h, and strut away like Angela Bassett, in Waiting to Exhale! 😂 Eden didn't deserve any of this! Their disregard of her feelings, taking advantage of her money and time, and raising her damn nephews! Whew! I just absorbed all of Eden's emotions and hurt, by the end of this read! I'm so depleted! 😢

Hakeem and Eden were drawn to each other, as game recognize game! They could see the darkness in the other, and the pull was too strong to ignore. I cheered as I saw some light and life be breathed into Hakeem, due to Eden. He was learning as he went, as he had never had these feelings before. He felt peace with her, and allowed her his words! I knew Eden was afraid of losing the best thing that has come into her life. But, I wanted her to put on her yellow big girl panties and fess up! The longer she waited the more difficult it would be. Damn Eden! 😡 Why you let him find out like that? Now with them at odds, Barry's ass can come right in for the kill! I hope that Hakeem can sense his girl needs him, and allows Reaper to take care of business! Eden be smart and get out of this thing unscathed as best you can! That last sentence by Isa was so sad! What will all of this do to him and Jayce? Lawd, this read took me through some thangs! But, I loved every minute! Looking forward to the next one! Slow hand clap ma'am! 👍👍👍

Silently seen

“I’ll move some things around on my schedule to make sure I’m there.” “Just like that?” “Just like that. I’m the nig#a that makes shit happen for the people I care about. And if I can’t make it happen, I’ll find someone who can.”
Whew when Hakeem blessed us with his words, you knew they were to truly SAY something. I loved it when he talked that talk and his confidence and BDE rang loud and clear.

Hakeem was Verse's quiet, aloof, emotionless friend/bodyguard from In this Moment. He had a rough childhood that left him leaning towards violence and then the safety of silence. He only shared words with the ones he cared about most. Love was never on his radar until he met Eden. Even then he was just drawn to her and he couldn't explain it. He couldn't shake his attraction, so he leaned into it.

Eden, was a beautifully broken yet strong woman. She was an MMA fighter, but it was her past life that kept her perpetually drowning. She was the backbone of her family, always taking care of everyone without reciprocation. When she meets Hakeem she was immediately intrigued and weirdly attracted to the darkness that cloaked him. They started off with pure heat, but it turned into such a sweet love. It was sad that they never expressed it, but their actions and vulnerability spoke loud and clear.
I loved how "Keem's family" was so happy for him to find his own little family. The way he gently cared for her nephews was just too sweet. I wanted her to really open up to him, because I feel like he would've protected her. Instead her fear of losing him won and he was blindsided by her secrets. I need to stress that Keem showed so much vulnerability with Eden, he did everything to make her understand she was safe with him....her past, future, and present. His growth to actually feel instead of hiding was a beautiful sight to see. He stepped out of his own way to embrace Eden. His small gestures were big and I really wanted Eden to give her worries over to him to address.

Whew K. Lashaun knows how to humanize these beautifully complicated characters. This ending 😞 lawd poor Eden. I can't believe we have to wait for them to hopefully find their way together.

💙🫶🏾

There was a darkness hovering over this read and I felt my heart aching for the characters. The title and book cover definitely matched the books energy. The story piqued my interest because Hakeem and Eden were so complex with intense family dynamics and a rough upbringing. It was clear that both had their guards up, but their chemistry couldn't be missed. I liked that Eden was an MMA fighter with a soft spot for her nephews. And Hakeem is such a protector. The last 70% had me on edge because I knew I would have to wait for book two for more answers. Overall, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward for the second part. K. Lashaun can pen a male character and while there’s so much we still have to learn about Hakeem, I feel like he deserves this kind of love. I am interested in seeing how Eden overcomes the challenges that she faces- her past is clashing with her current life and her family is really horrible. I really liked seeing the past characters in this story.

I received an arc copy from the author, all thoughts are my own.

It makes no sense how many asses I wanted to beat in this book. Eden's whole family and I do mean whole family is trash and everybody except her precious nephews needs the beating of a lifetime. Between her deadbeat hoe ass sister, Madi, Rome, Crow and Barry's bitch asses I don't know who I want dead more. I know they gone get theirs in the next book but damn.

This book was too good. K. Lashaun is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. The way she weaves a tale and creates the best and moat swoon worthy BDE having men. She the goat forreal. I'm glad my grumpy baby, Hakeem finally got a book. I always wanted to know more about him. Getting the flashbacks of his past was absolutely heartbreaking. His mom was an absolute piece of shit and I hope when OD'd she suffered. That bitch can burn in hell. I'm so glad he met Verse and Gia as a kid. They were a safe haven for him. That whole friendship group of theirs is the best. I'm glad he found a family in them. People who love and care for him like he's deserves.

I'm so serious when I say Eden is my favorite MFC from K so far. She was so great. I LOVED how she didn't have a conventional career. She was a woman, a black woman at that who was a MMA . I've never read a book where that's been the career choice for the female character. Especially a black one. The fact that she was also petite in height made it even better because a lot of the time if an author writes about a woman in a career like that they'd make her tall. I liked that Eden was a short badass who could knock out both men and women. I also loved how she doted on her nephews. Her sister and brother are terrible parents, I love how even though they aren't her kids, she treats them like they are because she knows those kids needed somebody to love them and care for them properly. Eden is written so well that even when she made the bad decision to not tell Keem who she was before he found out. I wasn't even mad. K. Lashaun often writes female characters that have unresolved trauma and because of that they tend to self sabotage. Eden is the first female character of hers whose actions didn't piss me off.

Eden and Hakeem's chemistry was just chefs' kiss. It was insane. I loved how Eden never judged him for not being much of a talker. Because she made him comfortable being himself, he was able to open up to her. Seeing their connection grow was so cute. Add in him bonding with her nephews and their family unit was the cutest.

I hate that this book ended in heartbreak but I know in the next one, the conclusion to their story, they'll get back on track. I can't wait for Hakeem to come in and fuck all these bitch made mofos up for Eden.

Hakeem and Eden 🥰 I wanted to know more about Hakeem from Verse & Garryn’s book. His story hasn’t disappointed so far. I think these two needed each other more than they thought.

Eden, I was on pins waiting for her to tell Hakeem everything. Miscommunication could solve so many things! As hard as Eden was, she was soft for her no-good family. I was ready for Eden to do something to her sister because she got away with too much. They wanted to ‘baby’ Madi so bad… she’s 30, grow up.

I need some redeeming love from these two in the next book.

In Beneath the Silence, K. Lashaun crafts a story that feels like peeling back layers of an onion—each one revealing something raw, tender, and achingly human. Eden Foster is an MMA fighter who’s spent her life throwing punches for others, all while clinging to the mantra of “family over everything,” even when her own family has left her battered and bruised. Hakeem Biggers, on the other hand, carries the weight of a childhood marred by neglect and a path paved with anger and regret. He’s chosen silence as his armor, observing life from the sidelines rather than risking another misstep. When these two collide, both literally and figuratively, they ignite a connection neither saw coming. What starts as mistrust evolves into a dance of emotions, where love becomes not just a possibility but a lifeline. Yet, their pasts loom large, threatening to unravel the fragile bond they’re building.

This book reminds us that no matter how cracked or incomplete your foundation may be, you can still build a strong house and sometimes, those walls are held up by people you never expected. Your past will always shape your future, even when you try to switch paths, but it doesn’t define the person you choose to become. One of the most poignant truths in this story is that we all deserve someone who loves us exactly as we need to be loved and family isn’t always blood. It’s choice. Love, as Lashaun so beautifully illustrates, has layers. Eden and Hakeem are entangled in ways that feel both messy and magical. Their complicated histories, so different yet eerily mirrored, make their journey all the more compelling. You’ll find yourself rooting for them not because they’re perfect, but because they’re real.

K. Lashaun has an extraordinary gift for balancing the heaviness of trauma with the lightness of evolving love. She weaves these threads together with such finesse that you can’t help but feel every high and low alongside the characters. This book hits all the marks: rich character development, sizzling chemistry, and a plot that keeps you glued to the page. Her writing style is smooth, immersive, and utterly addictive, I couldn’t put it down. This series? Oh, it’s got me in a chokehold, and I’m here for every second of it. If you’re looking for a story that’s equal parts heart-wrenching and heartwarming, Beneath the Silence is a knockout you won’t forget.

Although I enjoyed this book I felt like there were many grammar errors throughout the book. Several times I came across a sentence that I felt was missing a word. It felt like back in the early 2000s when texting came out but you only had a certain amount of characters you could use so someone would omit a word here or there but you could still decipher what was being said. There was also a section in Chapter 35 titled “Chapter Thirty-Five - Hakeem” that puts it into Hakeem’s perspective. I think the author forgot to take that out because as I kept reading I could tell it should have been left out. Overall I enjoyed the story. Definitely want love for Hakeem. And Eden but she needs to be truthful to Hakeem. His love is right there waiting for you!

The following are all the thoughts I had while reading this book so it may contains some spoilers:

Yes Hakeem!! Make them suffer! Mofos done had a pass for like 2 decades! Time to go to Hell!

Sometimes I think the man i’m supposed to be with is a low life bum, and I don’t need any help being broke so stay far away!

I’m not lying to spare your feelings. Maybe a child but a grown adult! NOPE! Don’t come to me with some bullshxt about so and so saw some bxtch with your baby daddy during visitation at the prison! See why you need to leave the pookies alone!!?? I’ve always said that i’m not holding no nxgga down if he goes to prison! Not one that’s in the streets anyways. You will receive ONE goodbye letter sealed with a kiss! Dassit! 😂😂😂

Then her ass is extra trifling! “Can you watch Isa for me..I forgot I had plans” hell no!

P105 grammar error.

I definitely want true love for Hakeem! Eden better not fxck up!

Not “Thanks.” 😭😭😭 I’d be so embarrassed!

P131 grammar error. Not really that many mistakes but a few questionable sentences.

You know this is why i stay to myself. It’s me over everything! I have love for my family but i’m not putting my life on the line for some fxck shit you did!

Chapter 8 Eden said she still owed $4000. Now in chapter 16 she still owes $6000.

Yeah couldn’t be me. I’d take my nephews and run if nothing else. What she doesn’t get is that Madi and probably Benji (more so if he had a girl) would sell their damn kids.

How come Eden didn’t ask Hakeem about him being the Reaper? Or not even have any more thoughts about it.

Eden’s mama is trifling! Listen just because you made the choice to stay and put up with your no good nigga doesn’t mean your son’s babymama has to. Nigga can’t even respect me while he’s in prison?? Bxtch bye! Fxck him and you!

Eden’s mama would have probably fought me if I was Eden! “…as long as they know where home is…” Well your man sure doesn’t since he’s never home. So what good did it do for you!

Her duty??? She is NOT married to that man! We are not doing wifely duties for boyfriends/baby daddies! Fxck THAT!

Yeah I would have walked away from all of them years ago. I can do bad all by myself.

Oop now that Eden is basically his girl (even though he needs to make it official) he getting possessive. Or more so protective. He never said anything about her car windows not being tinted.

Asking to go on dates and she still hasn’t asked about him being the reaper.

Smh. Unprotected sex. You were doing so good. She’s probably on birth control but still.

Smh just dig a deeper whole! Just tell the truth. Hakeem is a man that is about business! I’d had been and told the truth. Your fate is inevitable.

Ch 35-It’s an Eden chapter. Get to page 335 and there’s a break and then it says “Chapter Thirty-Five - Hakeem” and it turns into his chapter?? I skipped ahead to the end of the chapter and it goes to chapter 36. Idk if this just switched to his perspective for the chapter or what this a grammar error.

Yeah after reading into Chapter 36 it was definitely an error. Eden is giving Hakeem head for the first time in this chapter. I guess the author forgot to take that part out.

Idk why she would protest. They already had sex without a condom.

Smh at Eden. Had all those chances to tell Hakeem the truth. Fumbled the damn bag. I know it’ll work out in the end but shidd I would like to think i’d have been and told him everything. But i’m kind of in my get what I deserve era! Tell Hakeem to call me! 🤣🤣

Yeah this is why you look out for yourself and got to realize mofos don’t gaf! Isn’t Benji still 400?? He didn’t turn or walk away so why are they about to kill his kid?? I know to hurt Eden but that’s not her kid.

Eden x Hakeem

This book took me up thru their emotionally. I felt so drained after reading this book, especially as if I had been experiencing these things myself. I've been in love with Hakeem from book one when he told Garryn be plays Candy Crush to keep from killing people lol. I knew that whatever his orgin story was wouldn't surprise me as this gentle giant was a forced to be reckoned with and the way he fiercely protected those he loved. Hakeem was reserved, but observant, quiet but aware & those closest to him didn't care about his scowl because they knew he was just a big teddy bear. I was so happy to hear about the demise of this mother & was heartbroken over his brothers. Especially because it seemed like they were the only ones to show him love before he found Gia & Verse. I honestly didn't know what type of woman would capture his attention, but enter the Enticing Eden 😍

Nowwwww Eden, Miss. Eden. I ain't know how to feel about her. Sometimes, I found her charming & the care she displayed towards her nephews were endearing. & Other times I wanted to swing her from the east to the west by her braids even tho I would never get that close lol. I hated how she was so close to be done with her past & some bull that had NOTHING to do with her drew her in deeper. I found it ironic that she's an MMA fighter & she used to do some of the dirtiest work for her gang, but couldn't stand up to her piss poor ass family. I hated that she legit did her all to make their lives easier & all they did was spit in her face. But I hated even more that she wouldn't stand up to them. A part of me wished she would have gotten her nephews & ran far away from the bull. She deserved way more than she got, but it was like she was too afraid to demand it. & I hate even more that she let her secrets & fears run off the one person truly in her corner. All she had to do was tell Hakeem & he would have fixed it all. Idk why she couldn't trust the growing feelings she had for him & his continuous actions that he backed up his words.

While I hated that this book ended on a cliff hanger, I appreciated Miss. K telling us it was in the beginning. I typicy don't read cliffhangers if I can help it, but her reassurance that book four eases the attachment I've grown with the Uptown Crew & reminds me to be patient for her greatness.

Now I just need a couple things out of the next book & I'll be happy:

- Eden mama needs to apologize.
- Eden needs to give Hakeem a better apology.
- Hakeem needs to apologize for the illusion he presented to Eden the morning of their demise.
- Mona needs to move on.
- Trash Barry, Rome & Madi 🤢
- More detail on Gia & Israel
- What's going on with Austin & Kori?

I also would LOVEEEEE an Uptown Novella after all this has played out where we can catch up on the crew & hopefully they've added a baby or two 🥰

Miss. K, your writing is amazing & characters are unparalleled. Please continue to write these emotionally complex characters that truly give me all the feels 👏🏿

Rating: I loved this

I am a believer that K. Lashaun is a superior writer. Her crafting of stories has me lost with the characters. I am fully invested in the lives of these characters which has me screaming out loud fussing at these people. That invested and I love it.

Hakeem was an enigma in the previous stories in this series and I just knew that he was a complicated being. The depths of his trauma to the core of whom he is was beautifully electrifying. He was a bruised and battered being that literally went to war over those that he cared about. He will demolish all who get in the way or think about hurting someone he cares for. Do not let the reaper reap because that is a bad day.

Eden was a wounded woman who had so much going for her that it was blinded by the foolishness called family. From the beginning, they used her and only cared about what she could do for them. The fact that she was trying so hard to make her life better and kept getting pushed back at every turn pissed me off for her. I wanted her to walk in her greatness without being pulled back because of the actions of others. The loyalty that she had to her family was killing her slowly and baby girl needed to be resuscitated. The past Hakeem stories really allowed us to see into the life and mind of who he was. I was also able to gain much more respect for Verse as he always looked out for Hakeem since they met. I loved their friendship before and I love it even more now (including the whole friend group).

To see Hakeem slowly come out of his shell for Eden was so beautiful to watch. These two were a match made and they deserved all the happiness one another provided. Hakeem didn’t play about his Eden and he told baby girl to tell him what she wanted and he will make it happen..Period!!

There’s so many things that I can say but I will refrain as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. Just know that I loved this story and I am to the point that anything this woman writes, I’m going to read it.

I was debating on waiting to read this book, knowing that it leaves off on a cliffhanger, but my curiosity for Hakeem won out. The title was perfect for Hakeem and Eden because they both had some deep secrets. I must say this book was heavier than the first two books in the series, I was emotional throughout waiting on the happy moments.

We got glimpses of Hakeem in the other books, as Verse and Garryn's bodyguard, who also owns his security company. Hakeem's childhood and upbringing was traumatic and horrible to say the least. Due to that it has made him quiet, guarded, and mysterious, that feels the need to protects everyone he loves.

Eden is a MMA fighter, who literal has the world on her shoulders. Her family dynamics is "family over everything", which I absolutely hated it, because hers didn't deserve that loyalty. She is taking care of her nephews, sister/brother, Mother, hell everyone, and nobody was taking care of her until Keem came into the picture.  Her whole entire family and outside of the family walked all over her. There were so many times I wanted Eden to put her foot down and take off that dang cape, and when she did I was so happy, but it didn't last. There are times when you gotta let the family fall, especially when it is at the detriment of yourself.  Like Eden sis when is enough is enough?

When Hakeem and Eden meet, it is clear that there is something between them, but both have guards up, and rightfully so. They connect on a physically level first, and then emotionally it happens. Being in love was hard for keem, but It was so beautiful to see him try, and open himself to Eden and take care of her.

I'm ready for the next book, because the last couple of Chapters had me shook. Hakeem and Eden deserve a HEA, and I need to see how they are going to get there with all the mess going on. I want so much for Eden and hopefully in the next book we see her prevail and get her man.

Seeing Hakeem in the last two books made me very curious about his life story so I was glad he got his own story.

For me it started off kind of slow because we had to get to know Eden and where she would eventually fit into Hakeem's life. It was so sad seeing the glimpses into Hakeem's past but it gave more insight into why he was the way he was.

I loved his whole broody morallly grey personality and liked that it was a woman like Eden similar to him in nature that could get Hakeem to feel things. For Eden being a MMA fighter and previously an enforcer I never expected her to be such a push over when it came to her family. It really annoyed me how she let them as well as the people from the 400s walk all over her. Her sister would have to just call us estranged because she had me waiting to reach in the book and kick her ass myself.

Eden meets a man like Hakeem who constantly says to you anything you want just ask and he will take care of you and no matter how much he wants to be there and have her open up to him she just couldn't do it. He had a troubled past with the same people she is tangled up with so obviously finding out her truth wasn't gonna be taken with a grain of salt especially when he asked her to open up multiple times.

Another thing that was hard for me in this book was the writing errors. The previous stories had a few but this one had a lot so I had to be guessing or filling in what I think a phrase or sentence meant.

Overall I was glad to see Hakeem experience true emotions and find someone to make him open his heart although he has been through a lot. Eden has also been through alot and is clearly still going through it based on how this book ended so I am routing for them both because as much as Eden really needs to let that man love her and help her she has some more growth to do as well.

On to the last book in the series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This story follows Eden Foster and Hakeem Biggers. Eden is basically everyone in her family’s go to person but is also the family door mat. Eden who has always had F.O.E. ( Family Over Everything) drilled into her head has done so much that when she finally starts tries to get out of a bad situation her sister’s foolish and selfish ways pull her back into the very thing she was trying to get away from.
Hakeem has such a dark past. As silent as he is the love he has for those he considers his family is loud. Mistreated and abused by his mother Hakeem had a streak of anger he had to tame but really didn’t get control of it until getting back at the people that killed his brothers, The 400’s.
They meet after Krystal sees Hakeem’s interest is peaked and she asks to take kickboxing lessons with her. Thoroughly intrigued by everything Eden displays the two have an entanglement which turns into more. Secrets from each others past threaten to destroy what the pair build with one another.
I loved that Hakeem was soft with Eden and opened himself up to her. The most vulnerable parts of himself he was able to open up and reveal to Eden. Eden irked me but I believe I saw so much of myself in her character. Willing to do so much for others will seeking validation and love from those who really don’t deserve it. I absolutely loathe Eden’s family especially Madi. Keep in mind this is only part one I’m eager to see if Eden is able to be freed from the hold The 400’s have on her and have a HEA with limited pushback from Hakeem.

- Im so upset. I should have waited. This book was working my nerves and I think it mainly had to do with the fact that its no HEA for my Big Guy in this book.

- Now Eden... Eden baby im gonna touch your hand when I say this... when I said STAND TF UP I meant that. Eden is so far beyond a people pleaser I literally felt sick. She let everyone in her family and life in general walk all over her. My resentment for her family runs DEEP! The crazy part is she is a MMA fighter. So I was tew excited like yes she gonna be the perfect match for Hakeem... I was wrong. Hakeem ofc my silent king🧎🏾‍♀️🧎🏾‍♀️🧎🏾‍♀️. Im honestly so proud of him for pouring into they relationship like he did. He has a traumatic childhood but he actually turned his life around and owns a security company. He didn't grow up around love and care but he tried so hard in this book to give that to Eden.

- Now Eden you get no sympathy from me. You made your choice baby and now you need to stand on it. I definitely had to remind myself a few times this is a book because I was getting so heated like me and Eden know each other. Bye this book is so triggering! Y'all ever read a book irritated asf but still rooting for the characters?? That was me. I hope we get an HEA in the next book or some type of redemption bc Hakeem deserves it!

- Just go ahead and wait y'all but if you enjoy a little torture plz read and hit my DM immediately after.

Not worth the annoyance.

I was soo looking forward to Hakeem’s story as this quiet, reserved, and protective bodyguard who says little bit means a lot. Instead what I read was a badass fighter who let her family eeveryone else walk all over her while she constantly complains about the lack of reciprocal love but doing absolutely nothing to change the dynamics (until a little bit towards the end but even then).

I just….I wanted to love this book, especially after Remy’s book but this unfortunately fell very flat for me and had my blood boiling hot for side characters that I didn’t give AF about and ultimately a female Main Character that I just didn’t care about as the story progressed.

There’s a great irony in making Eden so revered but yet unable to tell her family to shove it, but like enough needed to be enough. And her not telling Hakeem the truth so irked me bc like madam that level of deceit is unforgivable even for a regular person, let alone someone like him that keeps his emotions so close to his chest - especially after she has SOOOO MANY CHANCES to tell the freaking truth.

Also, after a while I was trying to figure out if Hakeem and Eden truly needed to be together - like I wasn’t truly convinced that either was worth the potential fight.

I just……….. I’m disappointed in how this story turned out - I’m beyond irritated by Eden and her family and I kinda wish Hakeem had a better love interest/story.

Hakeem and Eden meet in an uneventful way, but both are drawn to both the darkness and the light they see in each other. Haleem, the protector is amazed someone managed to slip past his guarded nature. Eden, the fighter, is amazed Hakeem manages to look at her someone he wants, and not someone who can do something for him. Can two people who only know love in small bursts make it lasting fire?

Okay, so I liked this book very much. I enjoyed what the author brought to the table about Hakeem, his flashbacks, his past with Verse and Gia and everyone else. His hardness and darkness but his softness too. This book continues into another one and we get Eden's flashbacks in that story but I didn't think we needed them as much. Eden is a fearless woman, world on her shoulders, used to being ignored unless she was in use, used to begging for affection from those supposed to love her. I admired her evolution, her bravery, her spirit. She fought, physically and figuratively from start to finish and her character development was thoughtful and emotional. Her demeanor as an aunt, as the forgotten daughter, the burdened sister was relatable and real. I think her secret keeping was the wrong thing for the right reason and I think Hakeem's reaction was right for the wrong reasons.

Their love story didn't feel quite as romantic, but I gather that it wasn't supposed to and that hit me hard as well. They went FWB to not being able to live without one another but their emotional growth was so stunted no one could say what needed to be said. I found myself a bit frustrated with that. But in some ways I understood. I find that this story took two books to give the same amount of relevant story as Lathan and Remedy, the shortest book in the series. That was concerning. But still, very well written and profoundly enjoyable.

Never Misses

Lashaun never fails to give us characters that commit us to their storylines. This was such a beautiful, emotional, whirlwind of a ride! I knew Hakeem’s love story would be powerful, but I had no idea it was would have me crying every other page. From the small details giving readers at peek into the hearts of the characters. To the background stories they uncovered for us. When I sat down to read this book, the world around me disappeared & I became a citizen of their town. K.Lashaun is THAT GIRL with the pen!! I mean she legit never misses! Hakeem has been my man since book 1 of this series & to get the opportunity to learn more about the man beneath the silence (see what I did there 🤣), has been such a whirlwind. And Ms. Eden…that child made me want to put on my cape and save her from “Family over everything”. There was nothing I didn’t like about BTS & I am patiently waiting for the next book to find out if Keem & E get their HPE. Y’all, get into this book, this series, and this author’s catalog.

I need more...

Hakeem had a hard childhood, but with the help of Verse and Gia, it got better. Now, as a grown man, Hakeem has his own security company and is thriving. When he lays his sight on Eden, he can't get her out of his mind. Eden has the world on her shoulder, but all she wants to do is become a professional MMA fighter. One night together, the start of two lonely people realized what they were missing. When their past transgressions show up, this causes problems for them in and out of their relationship. I loved everything about this book and couldn't get enough. It was so beautiful to watch Hakeem be vulnerable and fall in love. When Edens' secret was revealed, he was devastated, but he was still there. Eden deserved everything she wanted in life, but those outside forces were too strong for her to fight alone. Eden and Hakeem were what each other wanted and needed, and I'm not sure what is next for them, but I hope it's peace. K. Lashaun, you did your thing with this one!!!

Words mean things

Ever title in this series is poignant this one even more so. I went in with big feelings and expectations for Hakeem but it’s Eden that stole my heart. I wanted so much for her and even Keem doesn’t seem like enough, my girl deserves the whole world and a harem. The women in this series are so incredible and will hold a special place in my heart, so quite frankly nothing but dragging hisself across broken glass is going to be enough for me in part two. I will say that the pace was a little slower and did lose me at times. I needed mental and emotional breaks after a Keem’s flashbacks or a conversation between Eden and her mom. This one is so emotional heavy that at times it felt like I was dragging myself through it. This is an incredible well written story but it doesn’t have the soft sweetness of the first two so make sure you are mentally prepared for it. Overall I’m very impressed with this series and the author and I can’t wait for part two.

I loved Keem in Book 1 and whatever we got to see of him in Book 2. A silent protector is one of my favorite types of characters in a Black Romance. But, watching Keem and Eden navigate this relationship was so hard. The intensity of the conflicts within these relationships definitely amplified each book and it was tricky to not get overly emotional at Eden's secrets coupled with Keem's stoic responses. It felt realistic in the sense that their interactions felt like some real life interactions - especially Keem's dryness in the beginning. Just tricker and a bit harder to get through!

Reposted from Book 2: I do this thing sometimes where I jump around books on my Kindle and sort of read a bit in q3 and then pop back to q1 - ESPECIALLY when I'm coming off a first read where we had a happily ever after (HEU). I have a hard time going from a HEU to to square 1. I did that with this book and so because of the disjointed way that I read it, I can't give it a rating that feels equitable!
