Jefferson Randolph is angry at the world for the arm he lost in the War Between the States and the destruction of his family. Embittered and reclusive, he's certain he'll never be happy until he marries a true Southern belle and rebuilds his family home. The last person he expects to stand in his way is a fiery redhead from Massachusetts who is the housemother for his two mischievous nieces, the stereotype of everything he detests in a woman. She's a Yankee who refuses to defer automatically to men, she has opinions she holds to firmly and states loudly, she wears strong bright colors, and she is determined to be independent. He's furious that, even after the quarantine is over, he can't stop thinking about her.Violet Goodwin has come west to discover what happened to her uncle and why the mine he left her is worthless. To support herself, she's taken a job as housemother in an exclusive girl's school. After Jeff Randolph is quarantined in the school with her and her sixteen young charges for five days, she wonders how she can be attracted to a man she dislikes so much. He appears to be self-pitying, angry, and emotionally distant. She can't understand why she could fantasize about him though she can't deny the man's physique is impressive. She hardly notices his missing arm, but she is stingingly aware of his ridiculous ideas about women. She's determined to prove that you don't have to be a young, mindless, southern belle to make a good wife."Leigh Greenwood is one of the marvels of the modern world. Very few authors can write a seven book saga in which each tale is better than the pervious one, but every one is ultra-excellent. VIOLET is the most heartwarming and emotionally enriching as the audience witnesses the hero's struggles." Harriet Klausner, Affaire de Coeur

My first time reading this author and I quite enjoyed it! The book is # 6 in a series that works a bit like a soap opera in that the characters from all the books come and go and references are made to previous events. But I never felt lost, so the books do work well as standalones.

Violet the 29 yr old spinster from Massachusetts and Jeff the 37 yr old bank mogul who spent two years as a prisoner of war in Massachusetts.

So right from the get-go, the deck is stacked against their love. Jeff has made a life's work of being a cantankerous rude bastard who hates everyone but most especially hates Yankees. He keeps the stump of his arm like a shield against feeling anything besides a need to work and stay emotion-free.

Violet lost the first bloom of her youth to taking care of her dying brother and drunkard father. Now she is a house mother at an all-girls boarding school where Jeff's twin nieces are raising hell.
Jeff finds himself forced to be the one to go deal with their imminent threat of expulsion and we get to see him and Violet clash. She doesn't lose her cool good sense, but he finds himself a bit taken aback that his rudeness doesn't ruffle her feathers or make her cower. A series of unforeseen events force them into close proximity again and again, until they feel a grudging admiration for each other. Maybe he even likes her...

The story evolves a bit slowly but the caste of characters keep you entertained as well as never being quite sure how the next confrontation between Violet and Jeff will turn out.

Eventually, of course, Jeff manages to cross the point of unforgivable and Violet leaves town. Thankfully he realizes almost immediately that he'd been emotionally manipulated and goes after her. . Then Violet got a bit tstl for a few pages but luckily it passes. There's some intrigue and suspense thrown in the last 15% that I felt wasn't needed, but whatever. Then a really sweet epilogue.

Safety is pretty good
On an interesting aside, Leigh Greenwood is a guy! I would not have guesses as he does a great job writing female characters. ; )

This my favorite in the Seven Brides series. For some reason I just adored Jefferson, although he was grumpy and hard to get along with. He was so hot to me. I like heroes who have injuries or are missing limbs, scarred, etc. He is missing an arm from the War Between The States. Jeff is quite bitter because he fought for the losing side in the war, and self-conscious about his missing arm. But boy he is so sexy that missing an arm is not a detraction (it's an added bonus for me). Violet is from the North and she is strongly anti-Southern because of her family having ties to the abolitionist movement and also due to losing a family member in the War, so there's already tension, but there was some serious chemistry and attraction between them. This drove the book and made it very enjoyable. I could read another 300 pages about Jeff because I just loved him as a hero. I liked that Violet could handle him despite him being very alpha and grumpy at that. It was also good because Jeff was stuck trying to help Violet watch his troublemaking nieces. From what I remember, the family calls them the "Terrible twins." It was pretty funny watching some of their antics, which tended to throw this unlikely couple together. Definitely a keeper in all ways. I like that they show up in later books, and in Fern, Violet makes a comment that she's been pregnant for most of their marriage (Jeff is pretty virile, as you can guess.)

Maaaannnnn, this was boring AF!

I LOVED how the book started though! Jeff was a total dick lick! But after that the book just floundered around and I never got hooked.

Also, if anyone is interested there is an alternate cover of this book and it might take the cake for WORST COVER EVER.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well I liked this book. It's right up there with Laurel in my favorite books.

To be honest, I wasn't looking forward to reading this particular brother's story. Jeff was so unpleasant in the previous books of this series that I wondered how on earth Leigh Greenwood would manage to make a hero out of him. Well, I think Leigh succeeded. Jeff comes across as the tortured hero all right, but his actions speak more for habit than anything else—a fact pointed out by Violet on more than one occasion. I have to say that his constant hang-ups about "Yankees" got rather annoying but he did finally see the light, so I'll let it go.

Violet was far more likable than I was expecting. Perhaps it was the fact that she was a little older than most heroines in romances today, but she seemed far more sensible and level-headed. Not that she didn't have spirit or a temper; she just knew how to control herself. I really liked her. :)

My biggest complaint has to be the tiny, and I mean tiny, part of the story that dealt with Violet's uncle's silver mine claim. It felt like it was added as an afterthought, almost as if the publishers didn't think there was enough suspense in this story. I think it would have been a wonderful story without it. But, that's just my opinion. :)

Violet by Leigh Greenwood
Seven Brides Series Book Six
I've been looking forward to Jefferson "Jeff" Randolph's story since meeting him in book one. He lost his arm in the war and came home bitter, hating anyone close to being a Yankee. Sadly, that included several of his sisters-in-law. He was always cranky, yet there for his brothers if they needed him. As the owner of a bank in Denver, he pores all of himself into making money, hoping one day the family will return to Virginia. To a life that no longer exists.

Violet Goodwin has lost everyone. When her uncle hits it big with his silver mine in Colorado, she sells everything in Massachusetts to come join him. Sadly, he dies before she gets there. So now, she's taken a job as a housemother in Denver. An exclusive school for girls of high society parents.

George and Rose sent their twins to the Denver school, and they are not behaving well. With Fern too pregnant to do anything and Madison off on a mission Jeff sent him on...he's the only Randolph to go to the school to find out what's going on with his hellion nieces. And everything changes.

This book didn't disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was happy to see Jeff get his happily ever after.

3.5/5

I was VERY wary before starting this book. In my experience, male authors don’t often know how to write compelling FMCs, especially in romance books. Moreover, the hero is a CONFEDERATE soldier who is extremely bitter about losing the war to the North. He’s also extremely misogynistic and neglectful of a big cause of the war - the abolishment of slavery. I’m not a fan (and that’s a heavy understatement) of “reformed racists”. However, I decided to keep an open mind. This book went better than I expected but the issues I anticipated were still dominant.

Let me start by saying that I met Jeff very briefly in No One But You by the same author. It was obvious that he had some major issues mentally because of his father and losing his arm in the war. When we see him again in Violent, he was the same miserable vet who took it out on his brothers (who married Yankees) and sisters-in-law (who came from Yankee families), just richer. He absolutely despised everything Yankee because of his - I mean even the FMC's voice made him want to murder her. He was in charge of his two nieces who went to school in Denver where he currently resided because his brother's family still lived in Texas. His nieces were troublemakers and so he had to come to their school, where he met the FMC. There was forced proximity because of . It was during this time that their relationship mostly developed.

Before I get further into the MMC and the relationship, I must say that Greenwood actually knew how to write a pretty good FMC. She was headstrong but not in a cocky way. She was firm in her beliefs and convictions; she definitely handled the MMC well given his attitude and outbursts. I love that she took her life in her own hands and stayed positive despite all the hardships she faced in life. In many ways, she was stronger than the MMC. She also rebutted him firmly and had the strength to tell him hard truths that nobody dared to, even his family who tolerated his surly existence for years.

Now, the relationship between the FMC and MMC. I don't like enemies to lovers where the "enemies" are literally on opposite sides of the belief spectrum, and this book only further convinced me of my distaste for this approach of this trope.

The issue of , there are still very many problems with the book despite Greenwood's attempt to resolve them. The MMC was extremely bitter and selfish for many years. He didn't realize how poorly he was treating his family until . Even then, his efforts to make amends seemed lackluster. Next point: his misogyny. The values of the South he was desperately trying to preserve include the idea of a wife who acted as nothing more than a warm hole to rut in and a submissive being with no mind of her own. I'm not even exaggerating. This is what he thought:

"She will see that the servants and children are trained to show her husband the respect and deference she herself gives him. Her home will be a haven for his rest, a welcoming spot for his friends. She will do her best to give him many strong, healthy sons, and she will never withhold the comfort of her body. She will find no higher joy than his happiness."

Obviously he changed his mind toward the end of the book but I couldn't stand how his contempt toward the FMC lasted for so long. I hate it even more that for the years that passed nobody ever called him out enough to change his mindset. Had the war not happen, he would continue to think this way and consider it good virtues of a proper Southern belle. I understand that Greenwood was trying to create a flawed hero to show his growth but this was going too far. Even by the end of the story, he only tolerated the FMC and didn't show much obvious change in thinking. He was also extremely self-obsessed and considered his injury to be the center of the universe, hurting so many people along the way.

That is not to say he doesn't have any redeeming qualities. He was hardworking, cared for his family in his distorted way, and persistent. However, his flaws pretty much overshadowed everything good he had. However, Greenwood knew how to write good chemistry between characters, and I enjoy it enough to give this book 3.5/5.

4 Estrellitas.

2.5 Star.
I really enjoy Leigh Greenwood’s writing, but sometimes it leans too heavily into realism for my taste. I appreciated that the brothers weren’t perfect—they were flawed and damaged in different ways, which made them more human. However, I struggled to feel the deep love and bond between them. Even their interactions with each other's children came across as rough and emotionally distant, lacking the warmth I was hoping for.

Most of the couples were just okay for me. Aside from George and Rose, none of the pairings left a lasting impression. That said, I did appreciate that each couple faced their own challenges and earned their happily-ever-after. It was also satisfying to revisit the previous brothers and see how their lives have progressed and how their families are growing.

This was great. Jeff was a such a Yankee hater that it gave me such pleasure when he fell for one. It was so great because he fought harder than all of his brothers when it came to love and marriage. Violet is awesome and didn't put up with his crap.

So far the best one!! Jeff story was so sweet, it was refreshing to see a softer side of him, and the way he handle his rambunctious neices😂 they were not genteel southern belles but lil hooligans. I really enjoyed his story.

At first Jef's attitude made me very desperate but when reading his book I understood it and although I really liked Tyler's book, I loved it, my favorite.

Wasn't as good as I was expecting but it was still good. It had its funny moments and I liked Violets spunk. Despite his harshness I also liked Jeff as well. When it came to Jeff I continually forgot that he was missing an arm until it was mentioned...One thing I must say though is, if you are going to read the Seven Brides series I would recommend reading them in order. I failed to do that because I haven't been able to find the others yet so I read Rose (bk #1) first and Violet (bk #6) was the second one I've read and when it came to the family I was lost, having to piece together information mentioned in this book.

If you can get past the cheesy cover this is an entertaining story about a successful but bitter southerner and a spunky northern spinster who through the twists of fate wind up living in Denver. It's not love or even like at first sight . However it is a romance novel so you know Leigh Greenwood will make it happen. And he does with humor and style.

Quite a few typos though. The curse of the e book I guess.

One of my favorites. Jeff Is just so lovable and funny. Violet is really nice too. The plot was just really entertaining and never dull. You also got too see a Lot of the family which was fun to see those charcters again.
