Join the owls in the aspen grove as they nurture and raise their young through winter, spring, and summer. Using their superior eyesight, sound absorbing feathers, and powerful talons they have the hunting skills they need to constantly deliver prey to their young. But the owlets need to be protected as well as fed. The Smallest Owlet is based on a true story that happened in the aspen grove behind Georgia Graham's house where an owlet fell from its nest. Mother Owl stayed on the ground with the owlet, heroically protecting it until its flight feathers developed.
This is a true nature book with amazing lifelike ill-ustrations from author Georgia Graham. It follows the life of a baby owl from birth, following the growing process, and how its parents protect and feed it. The baby owl falls from its nest, the parents swooping down immediately to protect it. When other predators threaten it (including humans) the maternal and paternal instincts kick in to keep the owlet safe until it is able to fend on its own. The book follows the life cycle of the little owl from inception to living on its own. A fascinating section on facts about owls, highlight the back of this highly recommended book.
This was an EXCELLENT book about Great Horned Owls. We were fortunate enough to have a nest in our yard last year and witness the nesting process up close, but when I went to find books on Great Horned Owls at our library I was dissatisfied with the lack of resources to share with my kids. This beautifully illustrated and written book was exactly what I was looking for, so when I saw it in the “New”section of my library, I made sure to check it out. This is a beautiful book to share with your children, perfect for CM homeschoolers or anyone who loves nature and wants to learn more about these amazing creatures.
In typical Georgia Graham fashion each page in this book is a work of art. As we follow momma Great Horned Owl we see her guard her nest as new owlets are born. Through her story we learn about owl characteristics from chick to Parent. When a little one falls from the nest mom and dad continue to care and feed. She bravely protects it from a wolf. Soon the babies learn to fly and feed themselves. Children and adults will learn more about the Great Horned Owl at the back of the book. A beautiful and informative book for owl lovers of all ages.
This narrative nonfiction picture book follows a great horned owl couple as they start a family, and then as their owlets grow up. Good information presented in an appealing way. The illustrations are especially detailed and are truly lovely. Not overly gross, but still realistic and factual.
The illustrations in this one are really done well, and it's a great narrative nonfiction to start kids on research. Great facts with a story that is touching.
Maybe a little long for a 5 month old, but still an interesting read with lots of facts about owls. If your kid is starting to want to know facts about things, this is a book for them
