90 Miles to Freedom by K.C. Hilton is a kind of odd mystery/suspense read that seemed to touch on a bit of fantasy. Readers start off meeting this family of four with the youngest brother graduating high school but as the parents leave for graduation their car explodes. It then shows how the oldest son had been using his boat to bring illegal refugees in from Cuba. As weird as this story was I actually kind of liked it anyway. Could have used a bit more to it since it's so short and perhaps better editing but overall I'd give it 3.5 stars.

I found this to be a disappointing read. I bought it because it was well rated and reviews said that it was a non-stop page turner.
It was not.
It was started out as a family drama and then became a story about rescuing illegals from Cuba, which was having a hard time keeping my interest. Then it became somewhat sci-fi when the story hits a reset button and undoes things that already have taken place and with no explanation.
What?
What did this story want to be? Too many things and it doesn't work.
Surprised to see so many positive reviews here.

ARC - I loved the family dynamic. And the twists and turns that this books takes. I experienced several different emotions reading this book. I would have given it a 5 star but I was a little put-out because of MORGAN! I'm a romantic at heart and I wanted MORE of Morgan and Collin. I want to know what happened after the phone call! I know it was meant to leave the reader to draw their own conclusions... But darn!

ARC - Wow! This is definitly my kind of read. At the end of the fourth chapter I was literally screaming (in my head) "What the heck are you doing? You cant' do that!" It got my attention that's for sure!
Collin's secret, in my opinion, can easily be compared to secrets other people have and keep hidden from their families. Examples: Being a drug dealer or a thief. Collin's secret was different than the normal and it threw me for a loop. I commend Hilton for her research. It was very informative and made me think a little differently about certain things.
The story revolves around Collin and his family, living in Key West, Florida. The description of his home and family were wonderful. I enjoyed his parents George and Betty, they were quite the happy/funny couple. At times I felt bad for his brother Joey and his finance Morgan, but they stood their ground and made good points. I could relate to one particular character (I won't say who) because of his escape, because I always felt like I was running away from something in my life.
When a person has 'skeletons in the closet' they always comes back to bite them, either getting caught or something... And 'something' is what happened in this story. (I won't spoil it).
The chain of events that happen because of Collin's secret kept me intrigued and held my attention. The story really gets interesting when it all comes out. And as my girlfriend is always saying, "OMG!" And there's always a bad guy isn't there?
I was so drawn into the story, that when something urgent happened, I would think to myself, "How would I react in that situation?" I have to admit my emotions got the better of me towards the end of the story. I'm a guy, so I won't say too much about that part, but I will say it 'got' to me.

As narrator for KC Hilton's The Magic of Finkleton she asked me to read and review this book 90 MIles to Freedom. After procrastinating for some time, I thought I would pick it up and browse the first few pages. I am not naturally a book reader as I lose concentration or simply get bored.
Well! I can tell YOU, sit down, strap up, hankies out and let the roller coaster begin. This writer can get into the depths of your very being with emotionianlism, intelligence and issues I had never even contemplated... I could NOT literally put it down waiting for the next expressive shock.
When a read takes me to the edge of my seat is faced with a tragic and sad obvious shocking revelation and is given to you with a sucker punch and the OH NO! It cant happen and it does tears rolled down my eyes in places I did not expect. Powerful, enduring and spirited! I learnt what courage is in a place a long way away!
Thank you KC Hilton in allowing me to read books again and to have faith in the courage and serenity of the human race. And that there is hope! More please!

Yay! I was sent a copy of this by the lovely K.C Hilton and it arrived just in time for me to take it to London with me - perfect reading for the return journey because I'd spent the entire ride to London AND the first hour of the return on the less-than-awesome Mist Over Pendle so it was great to have on hand something I knew I could finish before arriving home (thus meaning I could make a start on book #3) and that I also knew I'd really enjoy.
Well, that an educated guess told me I'd likely really enjoy! I actually didn't know much about the book at all before I read it. The blurb is deliberately vague about what all actually happens, which I reckon is a good thing in this case because there are so many surprises and so it works best when you don't know exactly what to expect. Thus, a spoiler cut.

The description pulled at me until I purchased this book and I'm glad I did. It's a great story. I don't write reviews often, but I had to with this book.
First off, over the years I've heard many people say this-and-that about Florida being over-run with Cubans. To ALL those people that have said anything similar - YOU NEED to read this book! If you know someone who is slightly prejudice towards Cubans or any race for that matter - BUY them this book! It's a lesson to learn.
This story doesn't revolve around Cuba entirely, but it's a story within a story and it's a good one. To walk in another person's shoes... You get the picture.
The main story revolves around Collin and his family. Collin helps people, but what he's doing is illegal in the United States and he keeps it a secret from everyone, including his family. But even a good-deed secret can become dangerous.
For me it was a quick read and not overly descriptive. Straight to the point. Sometimes less is more. I could easily see this being a movie full of susepense. I've read books of similar length, which were made into movies.
Also, I only gave this book a 4 star rating because I believe books can be written without curse words. If memory serves me correctly; I counted 5 of them. No big deal I suppose to most people. It's just my opinion.

A great thought-provoking novel, K.C. Hilton’s “90 Miles to Freedom” will take you on an emotional journey and bring out many emotions from beginning to end! There were many parts in this novel that I felt were genuine. The parents, or George and Betty, were such pleasant characters and really gave off that “loving couple” vibe. This novel was a very fast read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! :]

K.C. Hilton is a great writer & storyteller, I was drawn into this book & couldn't put it down.

This was almost like two books in one. Again not the kind of book I typically read but it ended up being really good.

I’ve waited a week to let this simmer and I still am not sure how I really feel about it. I’ve read both the positive and negative reviews and I have to say it is a little bit of both, but really the only bad is that it isn’t an inducing page turner as it is extremely praised to be. Some people complained that it was boring, but just because the majority of this book is putting together the pieces and concentrating on one man’s close-to-real-life journey, doesn’t make it boring.
K.C. Hilton does a spot on job with making us go through the emotions of joy, peace, camaraderie, sorrow, and depression. I partly rate the books I read on how they made me feel on an emotional level so I set my standards pretty high since this book was on several of Goodreads “Best emotional books” listopias. I wasn’t too disappointed. I think if the entire book was filled with heavy, non-stop emotions that some people love to get smothered in, it would have been too much. Hilton’s pacing and storytelling are near perfect and it’s easy to say that she definitely cares about the characters she created.
What set back the last star? I AM CONFUSED! It was great to get all sad and stuff in the end, and it would have been super depressing if Hilton hadn’t of done that weird thing--but…I just--I don’t understand. It doesn’t really fit into the “Books with the Bests Twists”
But 90 Miles to Freedom has definitely earned a spot on my bookshelf and Hilton has definitely earned her right of credibility and professionalism in my opinion. No, this book isn’t for everyone, but no one book really is.

This is more of a 3.5 star rating.
Let's see, this book was good. But, it could have been GREAT. Don't get me wrong, I'd definitely say that K.C. Hilton is a talented writer!
I was eager to read 90 Miles to Freedom because of the mostly positive reviews and then quickly downloaded it onto my kindle app. The plot summary sounded captivating, so I went into the book expecting it to be superb.
It started out pretty well, I like the approach that Hilton took on the narrative (it reminds me a lot of Jodi Picoult's style). The first thing I noticed though were the choppy sounding sentences. I feel as if the writing and choice of words could have been more erudite. In addition, the main characters seemed one-dimensional. Consequently, I did not become attached to them, as I usually do when I read (both a curse and a gift!). Still, I did my best to ignore this and kept reading. Then, all of the sudden, the novel took a complete twist. It wasn't a "whoa, I wasn't expecting that" twist, but more like a "huh?" kind. I was a bit confused because the plot jump seemed so random.
Still, 90 Miles to Freedom was a good, quick read (it took me about 3.5 hours to finish). Although the ending was a bit predictable, I was satisfied with the way it played out.

I was very intrigued by the title of this book. I have heard of KC Hilton in the YouTube book community and got this as a freebie from Pixel of Ink one day. I decided it was time to sit down and read it. I have to say I was not expecting the story I got when I started and I mean that in a good way.
The story is about immigration and centers around Collin and Joey who go through a horrible tragedy in the previous year that the book takes place. Along the way things between the brothers seem to deteriorate at a rapid place and yet the secret that one brother holds is the catalyst for the story itself and as one will see very early on the title as well.

By the middle of the story you not only feel bad for Colin and Joey but also the friends Collin makes along the way while enduring death, and other tragic events. The story centers around a young man named Collin, his younger brother Joey, and their parents George and Betty. It's a very loving close-nit family, but their idyllic world comes crashing down shortly after the story begins.
The book moves forward and backward from this point in time, revealing events that lead to it, and what happens as a result.
I liked the writing style and the way KC includes another story within this book and the unique way she ties the two together. Both stories are emotionally moving, and I felt very concerned for the characters throughout their individual journeys to freedom.

Finally my review: OMG are you kidding me! yes this is defiently a good read and it does have the emotional roller coaster ride. to be honest, not to give to much away, i read most of this on lunch and called my mom to tell her i wasn't happy with the way the story was going. she asked if i was completely done and i replied "no, i think i have a few chapters left and i was not happy at all, it sucked." mom told me keep reading. it will all make sense. i finished tonight, i was happy, a little mad, sort of frustrated, but happy.
i will say, if you want a good read that will pull you in emotiomally, 90 Miles To Freedom will do just that. thank you KC for writimg another awesom book.

This is such a great book! It killed me to have to put it down, to go to bed (stupid body needing sleep). The next night I started reading again and there was nothing, not even needing sleep, that was going to take me away from this book. I finished it at 1am and had to be up for work at 6am!
Everything starts off wonderful and interesting enough. Being introduced to a great family and home, then everything is turned upside down and I was immediately sucked in... Wow! I liked Collin but I loved his brother Joey. At one point I had to wipe my eyes to keep the tears away. The ending was a surprise; I didn't see THAT coming! But it was really good.

This book was not what I was expecting at all. At first just from the title I thought it was going to be about like a ridiculous 90 mile marathon that someone created or something weird like that. Then when I started reading it I realized it wasn't that at all, and then halfway through the book what I thought the book was changed again! So yes as it says in the back it was an "emotional rollercoaster". Overall this book was very intense to say the least and really made me want to cry from happiness and sadness at some points. This is my first KC Hilton book I have ever read and I was very pleased with it!

"90 Miles to Freedom'' was a very touching and thought provoking book. I lost my dad when i was 12 years old. Collin one of the main character's in the book lose's both of his parent's in a tragic accident. In the middle of the book we find out why Collin lost his parents and a secret that he has been keeping. This book brought tear's to my eye's as i read it. It brought back so many memories of my own dad. I ask the same question that Collin ask's. ( What If ). Also the book touches on smuggling people into the USA. I loved the book and would highly recommend it to anyone who like's mysteries/thriller's and action. The book was very well written.

It's a great read. Just as the description states, it's an emotional roller coaster. This is a very well written book that pulls you in from the start and is full of twists that keep you guessing. It's hard to put down because you can't wait to see what happens next. It's a normal happy family one day, then everything quickly turns upside down. It kept me thinking the entire time and the events have Joey and Collin struggling. I won't go in to detail to spoil anything. You will have to get the book and read for yourself. GREAT BOOK A+++++

So without giving away to much, I will say that I fell in love with Betty & George (first thing), their sons, their lives, and how they were planned out. Something happens right off that makes me sad. There's mystery there, this book tells of love, sacrifices, and choices both good or bad. By the time I was through with this book, I was TRULY convinced there's a reason for everything.

Freedom always has a price. K.C. Hilton sends that message out in this book really good. I really don't want to write a spoiler review for you so I will not tell you any of the plot line. If you are looking for a fast paced action adventure book this is the one for you. We meet a lot of characters that all have their problems and somehow K.C. pulls it all together in the end. If you are looking for a change in your style of reading and going to a more contemporary feel than purchase this book you will not regret it.

I loved this book. After the first chapter I was worried it wouldn't pull me in, but a few pages later, right in the beginning, it threw a curveball. Loved it. Throughout the book I wanted to know more and more and got lost in this book every time I read another page, which is one of the best parts. I thought the ending was heart wrenching, and the real ending was amazing. Both made me cry. It is definitely worth the read. It is fairly short, but packs a wonderful story in a few pages.

The Scott's were a close family and funny. Collin's parents, George and Betty, were my favorite and they were what made parts of the story fun. My feelings were tossed back and forth throughout the book. One minute I was laughing, the next I was upset. At one point I was even angry! One secret can tear a family apart. The same secret can make you a better person. I enjoyed reading this book and couldn't put it down. It caught me off gaurd.

I'm quickly becoming a fan of Hilton and will continue to read her books. This book is a big step-up from a children's book. I didn't know what to expect and I liked the book description. I learned a lot interesting stuff and it made me want to do my own research on the embargo set on Cuba. It made me think differently about a few things. I'm glad I read it.

The first three quarters of this book isn't bad - the characters could be more developed and some of the language is a bit sloppy. The last quarter has a (poor) series of plot twists that I found annoying.
I read this book since it had been highly rated by a number of other reads - personally I was disappointed, but this probably means that I am not part of the target audience.
I read this book since it had been highly rated by a number of other reads - personally I was disappointed, but this probably means that I am not part of the target audience.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The author did an excellent job of developing each character and drawing me in for the great finale. A truly wonderful adventure with a huge twist that I loved. Way to go K.C. Hilton!!

Great story and character development. Writing was a little simple at times with a lot description about things unimportant to the story. Wanted to give this 3 1/2 stars because I hated the ending but still think the book is worth reading and would recommend it.

Huh? Is the best word to describe this book. I think with proper editing and re-writing a decent story could have been eked out, but as it is, it's a jumbled mess. It's more like an outline to a story, and I spent half of the time rolling my eyes.
