Deep-O-Tionals: Devotions with Depth - Genesis: Part 2

Rate this book
Perhaps you know Mesu Andrews as the author of best-selling, award-winning biblical fiction, but in Deep-O-Tionals: Devotions with Depth, readers are invited to discover the roots of Mesu’s writing strength. From her earliest days as a young mother seeking daily guidance from the Scriptures to her current journey as a grandmother finding inspiration in God’s Word, Mesu has always been a lover of the Bible. Readers are invited to share in her real, raw, and refining journey with the One who calls us all to dive deep into life with Him.

Few of us have hours to study Scripture or find insight with our limited understanding of God’s Word. Deep-O-Tionals: Devotions with Depth presents Bible study details in conversational content. The resulting daily devotional studies combine in-depth looks at short Scripture passages with real-life applications of spiritual truth. Each lesson includes an introductory story that touches the heart, the day’s full Bible text with commentary to teach the mind, and a heartfelt suggested prayer to transform the life. Bonus material called, Sheep Going Deep, provides extra Biblical content for the Good Shepherd to lead those seeking deeper study.

This volume, Deep-O-Tionals—Genesis: Part 2, explores Genesis 21-36. From his miraculous birth to his near sacrifice at the hand of his father, Isaac is the primary character of the early chapters. When Rebekah, Isaac’s wife from his ancestral homeland, gives birth to twin sons, Esau and Jacob, the story turns to familial strife and intrigue. Jacob’s tricky ways lead to the fulfillment of God’s predicted outcomes resulting in Jacob escaping his brother’s murderous threats and establishing a family of twelve sons and one daughter with four wives in a distant land. Jacob’s journeys away from home and his return trip feature personal encounters with God that develop his faith and deepen his relationships which sustain him in times of both prosperity and loss. The final chapters conclude with the genealogies of both Jacob and Esau—just before Jacob’s favorite son, Joseph, is sold by his jealous brothers to Egypt.

I am really enjoying reading these Deep-O-Tionals by Mesu Andrews. One of my favorite stories in Part 2 was the PSD story (powdered sugar donuts), it was something I probably would do😂. This devotional truly touched some topics that I needed to hear, and also some really comforting and loving moments that God has for us.

I love that these devotionals have gone through every chapter of Genesis with moments of true life stories that connect to God's Word.

This second volume picks off where Volume 1 left off, continuing to walk through the book of Genesis. It does so in a down-to-earth, practical manner. Each section of the deep-o-tional dives a little deeper. One of the most marvelous things about the devotional is that all the related scriptures are there for you to read, saving you time and keeping you in the flow of each day. The deep-o-tionals are thought-provoking and challenging. They make you look beyond the Biblical narrative and how it points to the deeper story of how God is at work. I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Mesu Andrews has done it again! Genesis Part 2 is a wonderful devotional that leads you deeper into the first book of the Bible and redemptive narrative God has recorded for us. The devotional includes 33 days and lessons of people we know well from the Scriptures - Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

If you have walked through part one already, then I want to assure you that the same wonderful format of teaching and thought provoking lessons continue in part two. If you haven’t bought any of the devotionals in this series yet and are seeking to learn more before purchasing, let me assure you that this second installment of the book of Genesis is just as relevant as the first and you won’t regret digging in.

Personally, I’m one that loves the book of Genesis and have many commentaries and books surrounding the events and people of this book. I would like to think I know this text well, yet, these devotionals from Andrews have given me a new way to think about these familiar passages and stories. Some days I learned things I never knew before and thought, “How could I have missed that? No wonder so-and-so did that…” And other days I had to humbly recognize areas of my life that were not where they ought to be. These lessons brought Genesis to life in new ways and I’m so grateful for the balance of teaching and turning that teaching into a transforming prayer for my life. I have always struggled with turning the story parts of Scripture into prayer back to God but Andrews has taught how to do that by example so well in this devotional series.

Whether you are already on this devotional journey in Genesis or just now thinking about jumping in, you will find a lot of ancient truth with a modern application in part two! Part two covers Genesis chapters 20 through 36. I highly recommend this series!

Mesu Andrews’ second installment in her Deep-O-Tionals devotional series does not disappoint. Andrews continues her deep dive into the book of Genesis, picking up where she left off at the end of the first installment in Genesis chapter 21. Andrews discusses Genesis chapters 21-36 in this edition.
The takeaway theme from these passages, to me, was holding onto the faith we have in God’s word and promises. Throughout these chapters we meet Abram and Sarai, who become Abraham and Sarah once Sarah gives birth to Isaac at 90 years of age. Abraham was promised more descendants than stars in the sky or grains of sand after obeying God’s command to uproot his family and move to a foreign land—Canaan, which would become home to God’s beloved Israel. Abraham’s obedience and faith in God’s promises throughout years of trials inspire his own child’s, then his grandchildren’s faithfulness in God’s promises, especially throughout long seasons of waiting.
Mesu regales us with stunningly insightful yet witty comparisons of these same lessons of faith and patience she’s observed throughout her life, and uses these experiences to help us more clearly understand the lessons Genesis can teach us.
The lessons are again laid out in a short daily format, designed to immerse the reader in the Bible and help them learn a lesson in approximately 15 minutes a day without even opening the Bible. For those who want to dig deeper, there’s a little extra each day, but that portion can easily be skipped if the reader is in a hurry without missing the intended purpose.

We continue the journey through Genesis in Book 2 where Isaac and his family take center stage. We will explore in depth the near sacrifice, the twin sons, Jacob and Esau and their story and the twelve sons of Jacob.
What I really like about these Deep O Tionals is that they are small bites that allow me to study the Bible at my pace, some days with more time than others to go in depth. It has been a delight to get to know Mesu Andrews as a person and to know more about how she has developed into the great author she is in the Touching the Heart segments. It seems that Transforming Life prayers are exactly what I need each day. And if you feel like going deeper, Sheep Going Deep is perfect for a quiet morning time. Teaching the Mind are the perfect small bites of the daily Scripture.
I received an advance readers copy for my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review.

As a Bible student, one of the most profound aspects of the book apart from the fact that it deepens one's work with God is the simple but impactful layout of the devotional. Easy to grasp and apply to one's life.

This is the continuation of Part 1.

This is honestly a study to embark on. I feel this can be a long life study.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

I am thoroughly enjoying Mesu Andrews' Deep-o-tionals on Genesis. This second volume digs more deeply into the relationships of Jacob and God, but also within his family. One of my favorite sections is Sheep Going Deep. Not only do I love Ms. Andrews' observations, but also the questions she poses. Ones of introspection and application to real life.
