Sanatana Dharma - An Elementary Textbook of Hindu Religion and Ethics

Rate this book
Santana Dharma is the Eternal Wisdom or Order. Through the millennia, India's culture was moulded by it. Its principles have a timeless relevance to humanity in general. In this work, Annie Besant and Bhagavan Das have drawn the principles of Sanatana Dharma from the vast, nebulous, scattered sources, and have presented them in an integrated, abridged form for students below the college level.

Noted British reformer Annie Wood Besant vigorously supported socialism, birth control, trade unionism, and rights of women; the cause of independence interested her through her involvement with the theosophical society, and she moved and founded the home rule league in 1916 and served as president of the Indian national congress in 1917.

This prominent activist and orator wrote of Irish.

She, aged 20 years in 1867, married Frank Besant but separated over religious differences.

Once free of Frank Besant and exposed to new currents of thought, she began to question her long-held religious beliefs and the whole of conventional thinking. She began to write attacks on the way of the churches in lives of people. In particular, she attacked the status of the Church of England as a state-sponsored faith.

She quickly wrote a column for the National Reformer, the newspaper of the national secular society, to earn a small weekly wage. The society stood for a secular state and an end to the special status of Christianity and allowed her to act of its public speakers. Very popular public lectures entertained in Queen Victorian times. People quickly greatly demanded Besant, a brilliant speaker. Using the railway, she crisscrossed the country, spoke on all of the most important issues of the day, and always demanded improvement and freedom.

For many years, Besant befriended Charles Bradlaugh, leader of the national secular society. Bradlaugh, a former soldier, long separated from his wife; Besant lived with him and his daughters, and they worked together on many issues. He, an atheist and a republican, also tried to get elected as member of Parliament for Northampton.

She then prominently spoke for the national secular society, wrote, and closely befriended Charles Bradlaugh. In 1877, people prosecuted her and Bradlaugh for publishing a book of campaigner Charles Knowlton.

Besant and Bradlaugh, household names in 1877, then published a book of the American campaigner Charles Knowlton. It claimed that never happy working-class families ably decided not want of children. It suggested ways to limit the size of their families.

The scandal made them famous, and people elected Bradlaugh as member of Parliament for Northampton in 1880.

Actions included the bloody Sunday demonstration and the match girls strike of London of 1888. She led speakers for the Fabian society and the social democratic federation of Marxists. She topped the poll and won election to the school board of London for Tower Hamlets, topping the poll even despite few qualified female voters at that time.

In 1890, Besant met Helena Blavatsky, and over the next few years, secular matters waned. She joined as a member and a prominent lecturer on the subject. As part of her related work, she traveled. In 1898, she helped to establish the central Hindu college.

In 1902, she established le Droit Humain, the first overseas lodge of the international order of co-freemasonry. Over the next few years, she established lodges in many parts of the empire. In 1907, she led at international headquarters in Adyar, Madras (Chennai).

She also joined politics. When World War I broke in 1914, she helped to launch to campaign for democracy and dominion status within the empire. This led to her election in late 1917. After the war, she continued to campaign.

In 1922, she helped establish the Hyderabad (Sind) national collegiate board in Mumbai.

She fought, starting with freedom of thought, Fabians, and workers as a leading member of the national secular society alongside Charles Bradlaugh.

She continued to campaign until her death.

After being read so many books, I knew, I had to start it from somewhere. So I decided to mark the beginning of my book review journey with the BASICS. Yes, the BASICS of a belief system where we endow our most of the intellectual wealth.

Sanātana Dharma (often called as Hinduism), an eternal truth, which has been making news headlines and been a topic of discussion for a while now. Driving the whole narrative of the nation. Creating, aiding and sowing the seeds of the Bhārtiyata among the youth and sense of need of a complete Indic Renaissance into the intellectual class and the think tanks of the society which resulted as some fantabulous authors on to the table we have right now.

The book featured above is a guide book, a pragmatic presentation for the same trending topic. It talks about the elimentary knowledge and ethics of the religion. Provides instructions for the guiding principles of Sanātana Dharma which is common across all of its sects. The genesis of this book is extremely easy for the beginners who are keen to seek knowledge about the belief they invest themselves in. It begins with the basic Tenets of the faith, for e.g. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑶𝒏𝒆-𝑬𝒙𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆, 𝑲𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒂, 𝑹𝒆-𝒃𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒉 etc. and takes you all the way through its Customs and Rites like, 𝑺𝒂𝒎𝒔𝒌ā𝒓𝒂, Ś𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒉𝒂, 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑, 𝑷𝒖𝒓𝒖ṣā𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒂 and etc uptill the Ethics like 𝑽𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑽𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔, 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝑭𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝑩𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑬𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔, 𝑹𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑾𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒈 etc. which makes it the perfect handbook for the keen youth and the seekers who want something to start with.

My closing remarks will be a request to all the people, irrespective of their genre of interest, this book doesn't need a planned and lengthy review houses jargon of words. All it needs is pervasion, the diffusion into the Hindu Society so that it reaches every household. So please go ahead, buy it and read it. Go and figure out what are the religiously ordained practices incumbent upon you all, upon vou all Sanâtanis. It's a perfect guide book which will give you a kick start that you need to jump on to the venture to know more about what we call, "The Eternal Truth".

I read this e-book at one of my non-reader friend's request to tell her the gist of the book in my mother tongue Kannada.

Pasting here my response to her..in Kannada.

A Reverent Journey into Hindu Philosophy. I picked this up after a recommendation and felt inspired to explore my roots, especially with the New Ram Mandir at Ayodhya having its Pran Pratishtha. This book is a profound exploration of the foundational principles of Hinduism.

Overview:
While the stories within are familiar, Besant's textbook skillfully weaves them into a tapestry of teachings, reconnecting readers to the profound wisdom embedded in Hindu philosophy. It's a valuable resource for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Sanatana Dharma.

Why I Liked It:

Teaching Connection: The book adeptly connects familiar stories to the teachings they embody, providing a fresh perspective even for those well-versed in Hindu mythology.
Basics of Hinduism: A commendable resource for grasping the true basics of Sanatana Dharma, making it accessible for both beginners and those seeking a refresher.
Youthful Essence: A subtle recommendation for the younger generation, especially Hindu boys, who may find a reconnection to the essence of their religion.

Overall Impression:
I wholeheartedly recommend "Sanatana Dharma" to anyone eager to delve into the core tenets of Hinduism. Its unbiased approach and subtle guidance make it an invaluable read for those seeking a genuine understanding of the religion's essence. Whether you're a novice or well-versed in Hindu philosophy, this textbook offers a journey that is both enlightening and enriching.

If I'm reading this work any where near correct there are a lot of stories in hinduism that form the base of the religion. Lots and lots of stories. Each one reiterating a particular theme, Love v hate, friendship v enemies, lust v love, kindness v anger etc, etc. The basis of this continues along with the idea of a single God. Hinduism looks at the different aspects of God and each gets a name. That explains why most people think Hinduism is polytheist. This work is extremely readable and full of new, to me, ideas on what hinduism is truly about. A real good primer.
