In the middle of a rare mid-April blizzard in eastern Montana, young emergency room doctor Yvonne Endicott steps outside to help a truck that arrives in the middle of night, the occupants appearing desperate, in dire need of aid. Only once she is too far removed from the safety of the building does she realize their true intentions, the entire incident just beyond the scope of the front door cameras, everybody disappearing into a swirling storm of wind and snow.
Fielding the call for help is local sheriff Rake Ferris, a man so ingrained in the small community that he knows every person by their first name, takes every offense under his watch as a personal slight. Compounding the effect for him is a personal connection to the young doctor, forcing him to accept that the storm prevents any outside help from arriving and that the only aid he could possibly enlist comes in the form of Hawk Tate, the former DEA agent in town that has been the subject of widespread speculation since his arrival some years before.
Both men acting against their better judgment, Ferris and Hawk form an uneasy alliance, digging into the abduction to find a plot that runs much deeper than a simple kidnapping. Fighting against time, the elements, and even each other, they begin a chase that leads them through the booming eastern Montana oil fields, the blossoming drug trade that has taken hold there, and ultimately the power players behind all of it.
I originally hail from the midwest, growing up in the heart of farm country, and still consider it, along with West Tennessee, my co-home. Between the two, I have a firm belief that football is the greatest of all past-times, sweet tea is really the only acceptable beverage for any occasion, there is not an event on earth that either gym shorts or boots can't be worn to, and that Dairy Queen is the best restaurant on the planet. Further, southern accents are a highly likeable feature on most everybody, English bulldogs sit atop the critter hierarchy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Saturday night spent catfishing at the lake.
Since leaving the midwest I've been to college in New England, grad school in the Rockies, and lived in over a dozen different cities ranging from DC to Honolulu along the way. Each and every one of these experiences has shaped who I am at this point, a fact I hope is expressed in my writing. I have developed enormous affinity for locales and people of every size and shape, and even if I never figure out a way to properly convey them on paper, I am very much grateful for their presence in my life.
To sum it up, I asked a very good friend recently how they would describe me for something like this. Their response: "Plagued by realism and trained by experiences/education to be a pessimist, you somehow remain above all else an active dreamer." While I can't say those are the exact words I would choose, I can't say they're wrong. I travel, live in different places, try new foods, meet all kinds of different people, and above all else stay curious to a fault.
Here's hoping it continues to provide us all with some pretty good stories...
Dustin Stevens is a great writer. He is up there with Patterson, Baldacci, and Denville. He grabs you from page 1 and never lets you go. Could not out this book down. This book stayed true to the character, being the 3rd book in the series. The pace was fast, action packed. The writing wasn't unnecessarily heavy with descriptions. Highly recommend
This story takes place in a small town, late April snow storm in Montana. Kidnapped doctor, supplying drugs to oil workers exploded. Sheriff asks Hawk for a help. Page turning suspense takes place in a day, but like the other Dustin Stevens books I will come back and read it over again. Amazon should make a movie about Hank character. Can't wait for the 4th book.
I grabbed #3 before reading the first two, but didn't really miss much, as there were a few references to "that incident last year." 3.5 stars rounded up. The plot and action is top notch, but the secondary characters are pretty weak.
This is a tight thriller with a lone guy getting involved with local trouble. Sort of Reacher, except he's pulled in as opposed to wandering by. The lead female is strong and resourceful even though guns and violence are not part of her life. Her family connections are well done, and quite helpful at the end. There is no romance here, but one might hope for the future.
The bad guys and the cops are pretty lame, and there are some logistics oddities. But the finale is great.
This is an excellent series, I would like to read more of this series if or when it is added to. It's difficult to put down any of the books in this series. I spent most of the night up reading this book the same with each of the other two previous books in this series. This book could benefit from better proof reading as some of the words in sentences seem to be reversed. I would highly recommend to anyone to read this book. Thank you to Dustin Stevens for his visual descriptions it allows you to see the country and the people as well as knowing their personality. EXCELLENT writing.
Fire and Ice was a great title…lol, Hawke was called in by the Sheriff to assist in finding a local Dr who had been abducted from the local hospital, the Dr was also his niece so to say this was personal for the Sheriff was an understatement.
This was another explosive, action-filled adventure for Hawke with a drug side angle for the ex-DEA agent to puzzle out.
The beginning of the story was a bit jumpy from one part to the next but once I got into it I couldn't put it down.
I really like the way Hawke gets things done.
Hawke is courageous, dangerous and probably needs to be committed…lol, but he gets the job done.
I have read the first three Hawk books, and have downloaded the fourth. The author has created a main character who is three dimensional, and realistic. Strong and skilled, he does not have Jack Reacher's internal clock, but he packs more than a toothbrush, and works for a living. The plots are not encumbered with gimmicks and twists... more like the police procedurals of Harry Bosch, except you read about both sides, and know the culprit...the drama is in the "chase". Supporting characters seem realistic too. I love the "bargain" of Kindle Unlimited, but suspect this author won't be free forever, he deserves the big leagues.
Hawk just can't help himself! If someone is in trouble with the bad guys, he just has to help. Nothing can ever change what happened to his wife and daughter but he made a vow that he would help in the future and he'll never break that vow! So when the Sherrif asks for help to find a kidnapped doctor he is right there. Turns out she was taken by drug dealers. Right up Hawk's alley. Can he help find her in time? Why would someone want to kidnap a doctor? An explosion in the night, in white-out conditions, might just be the answer. Don't miss this outstanding book. Highly recommended.
This is my first read of a Jeremiah Tate (Hawk) series. I like Hawk as a character and the story was fun and exciting. Excellent action and the plot was good. Relaxing in Montana, Hawk is pulled into helping the local sheriff find a kidnapped ER doctor. Caught in a drug operation, the ER doctor has to fend for herself. Hawk has to work outside of his area, but manages to rescue the doctor. The believable story, good dialogue, and the excellent plot makes for a good read. I look forward to reading my of this series.
All three books that I have read in the Hawk Tate series, have been an excellent read; each read keeping my attention and not wanting me to put the read down until it was finished. I adore how good Hawk is at catching the bad guys! Also the details in your writing are excellent, not that I am an expert but I have just gotten back into reading again over the past year and I really like your writing.
This book was very slow compared to the other Hawk books I've read and the even better Reed and Billie books. The author did have a bit about snowmobiles in this which I liked but talked about the characters having cold fingers while riding. I know snowmobiles have had hand warmers in the handlebars for about the last 20 or so years. Why didn't they use them? Read this if you want and don't have anything else to do as I did, but I did skip a lot of the boring part.
I appreciate the story telling, the ‘read’ of the characters, and the fact there is no gratuitous sex or them ‘f’ word to get in the way of the story. Action-packed, with a satisfying conclusion. More attention to editing would be appreciated, as sentence structure is off-putting. I read Cross Fire first, and immediately had to follow it up with this one. Will search for more by this author.
Rarely do I give five stars to a kindle book. This deserves it. An exemplary story that is well written, captivating, and well outside the norms for this type of novel. The relationships between the characters, the avid description, the internal drama, ...This was an engaging story with a very realistic plot. Just one of the better books I've read in a while. Many thanks, Mr. Dustin Stevens...well done
I will preface this review by saying I did like this book. It was very good but it was a lot slower paced that his previous two books especially the second book! This book seemed to delve into more of the police work (investigation) stuff more than the shoot ‘em up, fist fights I’ve grow accustomed to with the first two books. Hawk is still one bad ass dude and definitely not someone you want to tangle with. I look forward to the next Hawk Tate novel!!!
More of the same action/suspense as in Cover Fire. This time Hawk must rescue Dr. Yvonne Endicott from a meth operation gone wrong.
Sometimes this is all I want--a fast read with lots of action. This kind of suspense doesn't require much of me and lets me relax. Sounds strange to think of it that way, but like watching an action movie, I know the hero will survive, so I don't have to worry.
I have read 5 books in the Hawk Tate series and all of the Reed and Billie series plus a few stand-alones. Excellent, every one. Hawk is a tactical warrior with an unshakeable knowledge of right and wrong and the skills to fight the good fight.
Just finished number three in my binge reading. I love these books and am not getting much else done! It was a great day when I stumbled across Dustin and the creation of Hawk. The character keeps evolving from book to book! Moving right on to book four. Could be a long night....
Terrible blizzard in small to Montana and meth lab blows up. Man taken to hospital and when other meth workers see an young MD outside they decide to kidnap her. Sheriff engages Hawk to help and he agrees. Believable story, descriptive writing but too much info on the various guns used in "shootout". Overall a good read.
Kudos for the witty language. Other than that nothing much. One-dimensional characters lacking depth and personality. Easy read without any further development. A tad of disappointment was brewing after I finished the book. I found out afterwards that this book is a part of a series, and it all made sense. Maybe the first one was ok. The production line was rolling.
So crazy good! As the doctor is kidnapped and made to try to help the victim of a shooting you are left to wonder if she will ever survive. Considering this takes place in the middle of a blizzard and she has no idea where she is makes it even more frightening. Can she save this guy with no supplies? A definite great read!!
Great reading couldn't put it down till finished. First time reading Dustin Stevens I will read the other series. Hawk love him. He is here hopefully him and Diaz will book up 💋
Great book great series. This is a must read series. It has lots of thrills and suspense. This is a book that you don't want to put down . I recommend this book and series.
Hawk agrees to help a sheriff retrieve a young doctor abducted by a drug cartel. Another tense, fast moving novel from the first few pages. I highly recommend this author.
Well the third book, was great just as the the first two
O guess I will settle for Five stars if that's all there is. I will be letting friends and family know they need to get All Dustin Stevens books o read.
I dont write reviews with the diligence this young man deserves. This time I not only have become wrapped up in the characters as I did with Reid and Billy, but I live withing 130 miles of the region this story took place. I love the writing style, characters and solid story arc Mr. Stevens writes. If you're a high stakes mystery and action buff, you will enjoy his work!
Each page making you want to continue reading. Descriptions of each character, the surroundings made it easy to visualize the story . Thank you, looking forward to another book.
Loved the book as I did the previous books of this series. Not liking that the author is turning Hawk into a cross between superman and a saint and is losing his "real-ness". Still wont miss the next one.
The actual time line of the story was quite short, but totally action packed. As usual, great characters. Enjoyable plot and all round good read. Looking forward to the next book.
