My August

Rate this book
"She's exquisite awake; and a masterpiece asleep"

August and I have been inseparable since childhood, but one kiss changed everything. Suddenly, I began to see things in a new light - not just about myself, but about him as well. It was as if he had morphed into a different person right before my eyes.

Sick, deviant, twisted - words I never would have associated with us before, now seem to fit like a glove.

Despite the fact that he slowly chipped away at my sanity and made me see the ugliest parts of himself, I couldn't bear the thought of leaving his side. Even as things grew increasingly dark and twisted between us, I remained fiercely loyal to the boy I had once called my best friend.

Author's Note: This is a dark, forbidden romance with triggers included in the book. There are mature themes (18 +) that may make some readers uncomfortable.

"If I fuck you, you're mine. Mine to use. Mine to destroy, and I will destroy you. Your cunt, your mouth, your heart, your fucking soul."

Okay, this was a rollercoaster! I was so happy to get the ARC for this because the blurb sounded right up my alley. I love forbidden love, taboo, stepsiblings - all of it! I was excited to read it... but sadly this has one trigger that made me very, very uncomfortable.

She is so fucking innocent and vulnerable. More beautiful than any girl in the fucking world. And the only girl I can't have.

So this book is about August and Luna, how they grow together as time passes. Their feelings change from infatuation to love. August is a dark and troubled soul. He was adopted when he was a child and went to live with Luna's family. They get super close as kids, but when Luna gets older his feelings change and he tries to stay far away from her... because he doesn't want to ruin her. He moves out and goes to the mountains.

"This is why I have to go. I can't be in this house and not kiss you, touch you, want you. I won't taint you, Lu."

They spend a year away from each other, but that doesn't help. Luna's parents die in a car accident and she goes to live with August in the mountains. She's determined to get his attention and love. What she doesn't know is that he's using her while she sleeps. But at the same time, he's

I've always looked up to him, and now I fucking worship him. He's my god, my savior, my every fucking thing.

They eventually can't take it anymore and give in. There was a lot of push-and-pull but I was happy to see them finally together!! There's a little drama at the end but it's resolved quickly.

Man, this book is SPICY. I enjoyed the spice between the MC's, there's a lot of somnophilia. The other spice (you'll know if you read it) grossed me out and made me feel very uncomfortable.

LIKES:
-the spice between MC's
-the KINKS!!!!
-the epilogues were very sweet. I was glad to see what the outcome was!
-this author's writing style!!

DISLIKES:
-
-the push and pull the entireee book!

SAFETY:
Virgin/celibate: virgin heroine, extreme manwhore hero
OM/OW drama: not in the classic sense, but there are OW
Tropes & Keywords: stepsiblings, forced proximity, secluded mountain
Triggers: drugging (to go to sleep so he can have sex with the unconscious person, h included), non/dubcon, sex with OW throughout book
Kinks: somnophilia, praise, breeding, rough sex, breathplay/choking, hand necklace, knife play, anal
HEA?: yes!

Spice 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
This is the first book I've read from this author, and I wasn't disappointed. The spice was perfect. But make sure you check the trigger warnings. Luna and Ace fight so much against their desires, but in the end, they are forced together and can no longer hold back. The reason this isn't a 5 star read for me is because whilst they were fighting against what they wanted, Ace slept with a few other women, and this is an ick for me. But all that a side it was a brilliant read, very well written and I will be definitely reading more from this author.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Enjoyed this story filled with somnophilia. Definitely check triggers.

Good overall story. Luna confused me. She wanted all his darkness, when he showed her that, she got scared, but then eventually came back. Bit confusing IMO.

Kind of a lot of OW drama also so if that’s not your thing, may want to skip this one.

There were several edits that were missed and for me to make a comment about that says something. Editing doesn’t bother me unless it’s enough to stand out and it did to me in this one.

~ adopted siblings
~ childhood best friends
~ somnophilia
~ light breeding kink
~ OTT JP hero

☑️ noncon SA of h by H
☑️ on page sex with OW, through 60%
☑️ death of secondary characters

This book has many of my favorite tropes, I had to give it three stars even though there were some fantastic scenes and lines. This is the story of adopted siblings August and Luna. August has been attracted to Luna since he was 16 and she was 14. He has deviant sexual desires and tries to stay away. There’s push and pull until they end up forced to live together and finally give in to attraction.

Spoilers from here on out! 🗣️

Two things I liked the least.

1. The first is the OW. I don’t have a problem with OW before a relationship starts, but this was excessive. There’s more sex between the H and OW then the h and H. Five scenes I think? He still has sex with OW after he’s begun to be intimate with the h, and the h catches him.

2. I was confused about his kink. In the beginning of the book it says he likes to hurt people and have them be unconscious. Then it sort of switches back to just plain somnophilia and control, until he begins hurting the h during sex. This is after he said he never wants to hurt the h. I felt like I needed more clarity about how they were navigating his kinks as a couple.

The rest of the book is good, there’s push and pull, jealously, some great Mine,Mine,Mine claiming scenes I loved. It’s just the right length for a quick read but a good feel for the characters.

There’s one scene where his reaction doesn’t fit the offense (he cuts her, uses a knife hilt in her and then forces her first time anal with no prep or lube) and it drives the h away, quite understandably. I don’t feel like this was ever fully resolved. There’s an accident and his SA is forgiven. He gets therapy but the h is just fine and dandy?

In all there’s not many books with lots of somnophilia in them, and this definitely fits that bill even if half the scenes are with other women. It’s still a good read and I’ll be checking for more from the author.

If heavy somno's your thing, this one's for you. Skimmed it since I'm just really curious how somno was written here compared to the others that I've read previously; they were written well though. I think the fact that it was focused on that trope combined with a past trauma and a sprinkle of forbidden is what made this book standout in its somno category.

Meh.

This one was weird because I had difficulties getting into it. Nothing really stuck out to me. Yet I still found myself reading it and not hating it. I just think the characters were too distant. You didn’t connect with them in any way. Yet the story was decent enough.

I was nervous going into this because I knew there was a lot of on-page sex with OW, but I really liked the premise so I wanted to give it a go. I didn't love the OW part, but I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. It did illustrate the depths of his depravity and he also did it as a way to resist the FMC. I know not everyone likes that (it's not the first time that reasoning has been in a romance), but I felt like it worked here because they were step-siblings and he really thought he was a sicko. I didn't necessarily love the way he talked about the women he was sleeping with (like it being perfect, etc), but I fully got the impression it was just sex and nothing more. Also, even while he was resisting the FMC, I fully believed if they were together, he wouldn't feel the need to sleep with other women (he did stop once they started sleeping together and he wasn't pushing her away anymore). It was very clear that she was very special to him and no one else even compared (I mean, he had been obsessed with her since he was 16).

However, I did have other anxieties in relation to his sexual preferences (somnophilia & super angry sex). At first, my concern was that no other type of sex was as good for him as somnophilia, so I worried that that would be all he would want to do. Also, even if he did partake in other types of sexual acts, it wouldn't be as sexually fulfilling, which is not what you want to hear as the person having sex with him. As the heroine, if you're pretty much asleep all the time during sex, it's not fair to you. You don't get to enjoy it, be present, or get off like the hero. No one wants a sex life where you don't actually get to experience any of it. It can't just be about the guy's pleasure.

Thankfully, this book really handled all of my concerns really well. Light spoilers ahead. The MMC had angry sex with the FMC out of jealousy twice and the second time, he really hurt her. I loved that she knew she needed to get away from him and he couldn't just say sorry and then that would make it all better. Imagine my surprise that he actually did what he should do by going to therapy. He had some major issues and I loved that he was working on them.

I then was so glad that the FMC offered at the end to take sleeping pills during sex, but he wanted her to be present and for him to see her feel pleasure. It was possible for him to enjoy her without somnophilia. I want the FMC to be enough for the MMC and for him to feel like sex can be amazing without her having to be asleep! But I also appreciated that it didn't go too far in the other direction and completely make it like suddenly he didn't crave it at all. Instead, they made it a healthy part of their sex life without it controlling him. They found ways to make it enjoyable for both of them. I love that. I want each partner to be sexually satisfied and for both of their needs to be equally as important.

There were a few editing issues here or there (like repeated phrases that needed to be deleted), but otherwise I enjoyed the writing and loved the epilogues. I'll definitely be checking out anything this author writes in the future.

Tons of problems:

() continuity issues (August is variously called her step-brother and her foster/adopted brother; characters are discussed before they’re introduced; they make a lasagna one night but three days later they eat it for dinner; the meaning they find in August’s moon-shaped birthmark is discussed before we are even told he has one)

() pacing problems (what was meant to feel like agonizing and waffling between August and Luna became a long, repetitive, contradictory middle section of the book where their feelings and motivations are all over the place and contradictory from one scene to the next)

() insufficient character development (basically every single side character felt so flimsy and like they only existed to move the plot along; Bear is mentioned nonchalantly as a part of their life, yet we don’t meet him for another many chapters)

() thin detail work and cliches (August suddenly moves to “the mountains”; he has a perfect picturesque cabin on acreage though he’s only 20 and only just started his carpentry business; the town has a “mountain festival”; Luna and her BFF only discuss August—and the dialogue sounds stilted and not very sixteen-year-oldy—and then they “spend the rest of their afternoon singing off-key,” which feels lazy instead of an enriching detail)

() oversimplifications and fairytale resolves with highly unrealistic outcomes (he has a massive breakthrough in therapy during his second session; at 20 years of age his sudden switch from college to to full-time carpentry is successful enough in a small, remote mountain town to completely support himself and Luna; the very first book she writes is a best-seller)

() problematic presentation of issues (I’m all for dark romance, but this author is trying to write a book that exonerates their love and makes it a Hallmark fairytale yet has August violently rape her—with a knife handle—and then when he apologizes she tells him it’s okay and he doesn’t have to change; if the author had written August as an unrepentant bad boy and this love as toxic but they can’t quit each other, I’d chalk it up to dark romance. But that’s not the love story this author is writing. She’s trying to straddle two kinds of love, and it doesn’t work.)

() abundant editing issues (myriad typos, dropped text, grammatical errors, punctuation errors)

This was a hot premise (adoptive siblings with a deep connection fall in love and explore his somnophilia kink), and the author had a totally workable skeleton plot . . . but that’s it. She needed to go back and work and rework the details to create a richer, more detailed world—with engaging dialogue, multidimensional side characters, and organic plot progressions—and then the book needed a serious copy edit.

She basically wasn’t done with the book before she published. Not a good read.

“She’s forbidden fruit, and I would rather go to hell than not taste her.”

“When the lights are out, and it's just me and the darkness, I creep into her room and watch her sleep. It's an illness, my deviant desires, but I can't help it. I need her.”

“Love is complicated, sweetheart. Ain't nothing black and white about any damn thing that has to do with the heart. Whoever thinks that is a damn fool.”

Blurb:

August and I have been inseparable since childhood, but one kiss changed everything. Suddenly, I began to see things in a new light - not just about myself, but about him as well. It was as if he had morphed into a different person right before my eyes.

My thoughts:

This was such a good forbidden taboo read!!! It had me hooked from chapter one. I will say this again and again I’m a huge fan of alpha-holes and I’m a sucker for possessive step-siblings alpha-hole!! If you’re like me this book is for you. Now keep in mind this read is not for everyone but I loved it! It is dark and twisted just how I like my reads. I’m not a big fan of third person POV but I was able to keep up with the book. The plot was there and is was good. There was the right amount of angst and your literally felt it in every chapter. The spice was slow burn at first but when it happened, good God almighty was it hot!! 🔥🔥Over all I have to say this is definitely worth the read..

Also, can we talk about the Epilogue and the bonus Epilogue!! It just my heart swooning.. 🥰🥰

“I’m going to make this up to you,” I say, my voice filled with conviction. “I’m going to be better, Lu. I’m going to deserve you.” Luna’s eyes meet mine. “You don’t have to prove anything to me, August,” she says. “I love you just the way you are.”

This is a dark and taboo romances. So PLEASE check your TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Stepbrother romance with a twisted dark kink? if you are into somno, this book is for you. this is somno on speed. Now I love me some somno but I did not heed al the trigger warnings because death of loving parents is very prominently featured in this book. Having recently lost my father, this felt very raw. But I digress. August has a kink, he likes to f**k woman when they are unconscious so he drugs them. Nothing non-consensual, the women all agree to be roofied. I mean, imagine this going on throughout the book, multiple women he is basically drugging before f***ing them. So if you are sensitive about OW drama, there is on page f*** of OW. Lots of OW. And of course after having met the h because they are step siblings. August loves his sister, in a not so brotherly way. To avoid any trouble and complication he messes with OW, also because he has this deviant somno kink. He pushes h away but faith has them thrown back together mountain man style. How long can you fight temptation when it's right in your face

**May Contain Spoliers**

What a Rollercoaster from the first (maybe second) page 😳!

The story follows MMC August and MFC Luna through a tumultuous ride!

Luna's parents adopt August when he is a young, and the infatuated that Luna and August share grows to be something more.

August is a troubled man, and does not want to tarnish his step-sister, Luna, so he ends up moving to the mountains so he will stay away from her. When Luna's parents die in a car accident she goes to live with August in the mountains... thats when it gets interesting!!

The one thing that triggered me a little more than I thought it would was the drugging (it was consensual) so that the MMC could fulfill his need for control.

Deliciously Taboo

Love basically everything about this book. The control August displays in the beginning to him losing it bit by bit can really be felt. I definitely recommend for those who have a twisted taboo mind like us and for those who don't- read the trigger warnings! Don't complain after reading it.

If I was to nit pick anything about this, there was a repeated sentence in the story not too far from the ending. Also, I would have loved to see an even darker downward spiral with either August or Luna - but that's just my twisted mind.

It was alright....

It was fine.... I guess I was thinking Somnophilia would be different, this was all consent.... froster brother and sister, have sparks threw out the book, but fight it because it's wrong, they are brother and sister, even though he isn't blood related, her parents think of him as a son.... Tragic happens, she goes and lives with him at 18 years old, things get heated between them, she know his deep secret that he likes to sleep with women when they are not cautious, but the women's always agree to it....

This is a dark, forbidden romance.
Please take note of the trigger warnings before reading.
August and Luna are adopted brother and sister. Close as can be until one kiss changed everything.
August is adamant about keeping Luna at arm's length after this, but the sparks slowly ignite...
August has dark tendencies, and I was here for all of them.
After a year apart, tragic circumstances bring them back together, and they end up up in the mountains together...
No spoilers from me.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Lily's work in the future.

Read for the k*nks from smut groups yas hahaha. Anyways it was so good at first cause I am all for consent but also dubcon and non-con dark romances so you see the struggle is real. But i love that consent and non consent was portrayed clearly here and whe the MMC took it way too far and hurt the FMC, well i applauded for the FMC needing to be away cause we rarely see fmc standing up for themfeelings like that. It started to sway a lil bit for me in the end and it feels rushed but a good first to half.

it's a fairly short story, 170 pages that flows smoothly. the story of August and Luna is very spicy and although both fight against their feelings, they win in the end. the minus of the story is the fact that Ace sleeps with different women throughout the story, but in the end the two deserve their HEA.

Am I the only one who was intrigued by Bear's story? Hope that his is the next one for Lily to write...

Oof, this book came up in a FB group as a recommendation.

I knew this was a step brother romance and I was good to go with it... but every other page for a good portion of the story was filled with, "we shouldn't be doing this" and the drama of it got old. The dialogue was stilted, and it's hard to explain other than conversations between all characters were disjointed and superficial.

Lots of spice in a short book. That was 👍.

Meh

I like the relationship between Luna and August. I didn't see any of the evil that is hinted about in the blurb. He's got anger issues but he isn't deviant or evil.

The author switched between step and adopted constantly. It's not the same thing.

The first half of the book was tedious and repetitive. "I want him/her but It's wrong." Over and over and over. It was a relief when something finally happened. If I had known this, I probably wouldn't have read it.

Forbidden Romance

A dark step brother romance August was adopted when he was young but as Luna his step sister got older he wanted her more and more so he left . When tragedy strikes and Luna only has August to turn to they both realise their feelings for each other , August tries to hide his darkness from Luna but it’s his darkness that pulls Luna in.
