Mainly a recap of the entire series, except for Tsuge’s part. But I loved it, it was a nice little reminder of how far they have come and where it all started. 😍

Nice that part of this volume is narrated from Kurosawa's point of view! Most of the series has been from Adachi's perspective so seeing things from the inside of Kurosawa's mind makes a nice change. Their relationship has not been smooth sailing, but they learn from their mistakes and grow closer each time.

The Tsuge and Minato story is also given more space in this volume, which is nice because it is another variation on what makes relationships so difficult. A common theme throughout the whole series is that honesty may be embarassing but so much better than the alternative in the long run. Just a pity that Udon the cat was given less attention now that focus has shifted to their relationship.

Oooh there's so much good stuff in this volume: we get Kurosawa and Adachi's domestic life; we get a flashback to Kurosawa's heteronormative misery, after a client told him he was too pretty and effeminate to be a real salesman and to cut his hair if he wanted anyone to take him seriously. He goes home and cuts it. It's so sad to watch young Yuichi just stress himself nearly to death, and then finally the light coming back into his life when he starts falling in love with Adachi, who said it was okay for him to be imperfect. Adachi later cuts Kurosawa's hair, rewriting the early bad memories with new loving ones.
Perfection!!!

We get the intolerably sweet interludes of Kurosawa's reminiscing about their first kisses, and growing acceptance from Kurosawa's slightly stuffy parents.

Tsuge and Minato's story progresses, and the long misunderstanding between them is finally beginning to clear up, although even with mind-reading abilities Tsuge is unable to understand how much Minato actually likes him--- ayyy they're a mess and it's very cute. Tsuge grows a full of sad-man beard when Minato doesn't contact him for several months, and in dramatic novelist fashion he prepares to let Minato go forever... Luckily Minato is stubborn and chases him down.

Just, pure delight.

This is a favorite volume for the nonstop sweetness, not just of our primary couple, but here we finally get more Tsuge and Minato!
I adore all of these characters and the depth and introspection with which their lives are portrayed.
Kurosawa’s fantasies about life with Adachi are adorable and will melt your heart. We get a little more backstory and learn more about that critical evening that set events in motion.
And at the conclusion of…well how soon will those wedding bells ring?

This book was OK but somewhat mediocre.

We got some of Kurosawa’s sad backstory. it shows that he struggled being himself because he was basically too good looking and perfect for people. As a kid he unintentionally seduced, his friends girlfriend, and in another situation, he cut his hair to appease some business partners so he wouldn’t look young. The only person he could be himself around is Adachi.

They celebrate their one year anniversary and go apartment shopping together. It’s sweet, but kind of boring. It reminds me of the first volume honestly. Not bad, but nothing to get excited over either. This volume is basically one to tidy up a few loose ends and set the stage for the wedding.

On the plus side, we do get an update on Minato and Tsuge. Last time, Tsuge admitted to Minato that he had “alternative motives“. However, Mito is rushed away and then he ignores Tsuge’s texts. He is heartbroken, but understands that his words probably freaked out Minato. Adachi finds out that he’s actually left with a dance crew, and one night, Tsuge sees him dancing on the big screen in public. He can’t stay away, so he buys him a pair of shoes and drops it off where he was performing. Minato runs to go see him and he apologizes for ignoring him and explains that he wasn’t sure what he meant and was too afraid to contact him back. So he did get weirded out. In the end,Tsuge confesses his feelings. He thinks Minato will reject him, so he goes to leave and his chastised for giving up too quickly. They end up hugging, and it ends there.

Their story was the most interesting part of this volume, but still, overall a meh volume.

So this was about 89% fluff and I am so here for that. We get a lot more of Kurosawa's voice and his appreciation for Adachi in the first half, which should feel vapid but doesn't because Kurosawa's sincerity just leaps off the page. (The LOOK Toyota draws for him when he's watching Adachi is just so heckin' cute it's absurd.) In the second half of the book, we catch up with Tsuge and how he handles Minato's success; I'm still not totally on board with that relationship and I don't know that it will ever quite make sense to me, but well done on them challenging each other, I suppose.
The thing that makes me continue to love this series so much is that Kurosawa and Adachi aren't just fluff; they start talking about finances and living space and who does the cooking in this volume. It's so incredibly good to see a romance treat a relationship with reality; I understand that's usually not the reason folks read romances but I'm so glad that this comic is going beyond the Happily Ever After to examine what Happily looks like and how that takes work and continued discussion--such an important piece of Kurosawa and Adachi's relationship.
There's a short tag episode of Yuta Rokkaku continuing to be an absolute himbo and I just love that Kurosawa and Adachi have this overeager work son that they share. Super here for the ridiculousness of that.
This took me maybe half an hour to read through and I'm already ready for volume ten. So glad these are all getting translated into English so I can devour them.

In this volume, we finally pick up where volume 7 left off with Tsuge and Minato. Before Tsuge can explain what he meant about “an ulterior motive” someone from the competition comes out asking Minato to return because the judges want to talk to him. Tsuge says he’ll explain later as Minato goes back in. After that, we see that Minato has kind of disappeared from Tsuge’s life. He isn’t delivering anymore, he isn’t answering texts. He’s worried Minato ghosted him because of “the ulterior motive” comment. During this time Adachi visits Tsuge and we see Tsuge is struggling. He starts to think more and more that Minato has forgotten about him. Finally, they reconnect, and we find out Minato hadn’t been allowed to talk about anything that was happening with his new dance career, and then once he could, he wasn’t how to reach out because he wasn’t entirley sure how he felt. Then Tsuge starts to explain and ends up telling him he loves him, but also acts like he knows Minato doesn’t feel the same. Minato. Minato reacts offended that Tsuge would just give up like that, and while doesn’t actually come out and say how he feels, he implies he has feelings for Tsuge, and it ends with them embracing for the first time.

There isn't a lot of Adachi and Kurosawa in this volume, but we do get to see what Kurosawa was like before Adachi, and hear his point of view of the story. We find out Kurosawa has written over 30 songs for Adachi! They also celebrate their 1-year anniversary and discuss getting a new place together.

Cherry Magic is the 9th Volume of this Japanese office romance. All the magic is done in the story really and now, it's simply day-to-day life. The slice-of-life stuff can be the best stuff anyway.

The story starts out giving us two chapters from Kurosawa's perspective. We see how he felt, how he built up walls and didn't date people after a time, and then how he felt when meeting Adachi. It was great. It didn't move the story along much, but I'm glad we got to see from his perspective.

Next, we have two chapters about Tsuge and Minato. There storyline has finally gotten to a confession. Then we get a hug. Both story lines are so sweet. I want to see if I can find the TV Show of this. I hope it's good. I haven't seen it on Viki.

The last two Chapters are the story moving forward. Our two leads are living together and very happy. They are looking for a new place together. There is a bonus chapter at the end about a co-worker trying to figure out Kurosawa's partner and he has all this evidence and he almost puts it together and he simply can't go there. It's very funny.

I love reading this series. It's simply entertaining and feels good.

Every volume just makes me feel 🥰. We get Kurosawa’s point of view of almost everything until now. What he felt knowing Adachi knows his thoughts and things he learned to impress him as well. Things look like smooth sailing and they’ve decided to look for an apartment together. Kurosawa’s not gonna let the moment get away and asks Adachi if he wants to get married after they’ve got their new home. And we finally get Tsuge and Minato’s story again. This time Tsuge believes Minato ghosted him and it’s sorta true. Tsuge gets writers block and let just say his longer hair makes him look more appealing 😏. Then as he’s walking he sees Minato on a big screen living out the dream of always being a dancer and Tsuge is truly happy for him. Minato is able to get ahold of our hopelessly in love writer and basically tells him not to give up. Hope has been renewed and now it’s time to look forward to their blossoming relationship.

This volume is full of heartwarming moments, offering a peek into Kurosawa and Adachi's daily life. A powerful flashback explores Kurosawa's struggle with societal expectations, leading him to conform in response to criticism. The story beautifully follows Kurosawa's journey to self-acceptance, spurred by his relationship with Adachi. It cleverly contrasts the initial challenges with later tender moments, like Adachi cutting Kurosawa's hair as a symbolic gesture. The interludes where Kurosawa fondly recalls their first kisses and gains acceptance from his parents add a charming touch to the story. Overall, it's a beautifully crafted volume that balances depth and emotion, making for an exceptional storytelling experience.

We get more of Tsuge and Minato's story here, which seems to be looking up after a bit of a slump where they weren't in contact with each other. Can't blame Minato here either as Tsuge really did leave things off on a really weird note before he ended up touring. It's cute how they come back together after the show, though.

Meanwhile, Adachi and Kurosawa are still working together and when they remember, house hunting. It seems like maybe Kurosawa's parents are warming up to the two of them as well given the interaction in this volume. Rokkaku is also still oddly endearing and yet a tad helpless at the same time both when it comes to their work in the office and his observations about Adachi and Kurosawa.... double dates? Really?

Volume 9 gave us a big chunk of the second couple's storyline and I love them, too. Especially in how the character growth has made them into better characters. I also love their ability to be vulnerable.

We did get to see the main couple as they explored new potential apartments, which introduces a mild hint into how the rest of the world around the couple will react to them being a gay couple. I've been curious about this throughout the series and it looks like the issue is starting to be brought up here as the couple is reaching the next big step in their relationship.

Onto the next volume!

Happy reading!
