Death at the Savoy is a fun, witty, quick-paced, cozy mystery! I received this eARC for an honest review from ZG Stories (thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book!)
Canadian Priscilla Tempest works in the press office at the regal hotel in London. She is really a fixer: when things go wrong, management and guests look to her to make things better. Consequently she finds herself in unusual and sometimes hilarious situations.
Guests staying at the Savoy include the famous, and infamous of the time. Priscilla interacts with them all, fending off advances, arranging liaisons, and doing all that you'd expect from a fixer.
Set during a very tumultuous year in history, 1968 (I think this is classified as historical, as it is just over 50 yrs ago -yes sigh) the book barely mentions current events of the time, and focusses mostly on creating a vibe that is consistent with the swinging sixties: a youth focused, fun-loving, hedonistic, artistic, fashion-forward time, with London was at its centre.
But the book starts with a murder, so it is not all fun and games at the Savoy. Scotland Yard and the demanding press become all too present.
Though I loved Priscilla, I tired of the constant description of her short skirts, the leering old men, and her being way too young for the job.
Otherwise, this was an amazingly fun book to read, and I will be looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Celles et ceux qui disent que vous avez aimé ce livre, vous vous mentez à vous même.
C'est censé être de la cosy mystery et au final c'est juste les aventures de Priscillia avec tous les pires mecs possibles sur cette planète. La fille est liée à 3 meurtres, dont un chez elle et elle, elle pense qu'à embrasser des pauvres types.
La résolution des meurtres passe en second plan, alors que c'est censé être le sujet du livre.
C'était nul, c'était chiant et ça m'a bien saoulé. Heureuse d'avoir fini ce calvaire.

This book follows Priscilla Tempest, a Canadian woman who is the head of the infamous Savoy Hotel's press office. All is normal at The Savoy until Priscilla gets caught in the middle of a murder investigation, when it is discovered that she was with a notorious arms dealer the night before.
I tried SO hard to get into this book but I just don't think it was for me. I was really into the idea of a female protagonist, however I feel like the only thing Priscilla had going for her was her looks. There were a few too many descriptions of men lusting over her legs in short mini skirts. There were a lot of characters in the book and not a lot of character building; I had a had time keeping track of who's who and what part they were playing in the story. It felt like there was a lot of random banter that didn't tie in with the plot.
I was also confused about the timeline of this book. The way it was written and language used felt like something from the 1920's but it actually takes place in 1968. Unfortunately this one just was not for me!

Odd, since when you left him he was a little too alive. Plus, it turns out that he’s a bit of an arms dealer, and not the caviar dealer he claimed.
So begins Prudence’s crusade to clear her name, if not her reputation, keep her job, and maybe even stay alive. This book is outrageously funny, peppered throughout with all-too-realistic cameo appearances from the likes of Noël Coward, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, and even a member of the royal family. Add to the mix a Soviet spy, a louche but handsome reporter, a fanatical monarchist from Scotland Yard, a Spanish gigolo, and serve it all accompanied by a nice flute of Bucks Fizz—that’s what the British call a Mimosa. And who said you don’t learn from fiction?
Anglophiles, lovers of comic crime fiction, and anyone in need of a break from the present day will adore this book. I’m off to The Carlyle for a Fizz myself, don’t bother ringing until Book 2 is out.—Brian Kenney

Je pense que j’attendais trop de ce cosy mystery et que mon désenchantement est inversement proportionnel à cette attente ! Tout est là pour faire une bonne histoire, l’hôtel, la période, les stars et autres personnes connues qui y séjournent.
Les personnages sont à peine présentés et on ne sait absolument pas pourquoi Priscilla, qui va être soupçonnée, a le poste d’attachée de presse de cet établissement de luxe alors qu’il est évident qu’elle n’a rien à y faire ! On ne sait pas qui est Priscilla à part qu’elle boit du champagne, beaucoup, qu’elle craque pour les hommes presque autant et qu’elle est totalement écervelée !
Il lui est répété sans cesse qu’elle va être renvoyée si elle continue à faire n’importe quoi qui porte préjudice à l’image de l’hôtel, c’est crispant ! Le pompon est la surenchère des intervenants qui va des services secrets jusqu’au KGB... en passant par les disputes homériques du couple Burton/Taylor, imbibé jusqu’à plus soif !
Une enquête et du tape-à-l'œil mais rien de structuré qui donne une assise au roman et à ses personnages !

1) J'ai été séduite par l'ambiance du Swinging London et l'atmosphère poudrée du Savoy. Le rythme de l'intrigue est vif, pétillant. C'est très agréable quand tu débarques au début, c'est comme savourer du champagne et laisser l'effervescence t'étourdir gentiment.
2) Hélas, l'ivresse ne dure qu'un temps et le charme également se fane. L'histoire perd peu à peu de son intérêt à force de rebondir sur tel nouveau crime, tel nouveau renversement. L'héroïne est partout, elle tombe sur les cadavres et enquête au nez et à la barbe de la police. C'est épuisant.
3) Au final je suis un peu déçue car cette série promettait une expérience chic et distrayante (c'est le cas) mais le récit ne tient pas en haleine. On se lasse. Oui c'est dommage car j'avais beaucoup d'expectatives mais je ne pense pas aller plus loin dans la découverte.

Press relations officer for London' s prestigious Savoy hotel. attractive Canadian Priscilla finds herself mingling with people like Noel Coward, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the swinging sixties, where her miniskirts are high fashion despite the disapproval of the stodgy hotel management. But now there are dead bodies in the Savoy and in her little flat, and various men seem interested in spending time with her--well, more interested than normally. They include a star reporter, a mysterious handsome man in a sports car, Egyptian arms dealers, a Russian caviar importer, and a Scotland Yard official, who doesn't see why she attracts so many corpses. The hotel manager's American mother-in-law and Princess Margaret also play roles in the whirl of activity that surrounds Priscilla.

Livre que j’ai bien apprécié mais dont l’histoire était moyenne. La cadre de base est assez intéressant, un grand et prestigieux hôtel, des personnages originaux et un meurtre mais au fur et à mesure de l’histoire, on s’enfonce dans des histoires sorties un peu de nul part. Globalement l’idée première était bonne mais à part quelques personnages attachants ou moments assez amusants, l’histoire perd de la vitesse et part dans tous les sens en ajoutant des personnages inconnus, on dirait qu’on a voulu mettre plein d’idées ensemble sans vraiment avoir le temps de les développer.

It’s honestly pretty good, but I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it’s the writing style, maybe it’s the genre of the book, but I’m excited to get back to my beloved romances.

This book was so-so. It wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't great. Hence the two stars; it was okay.
First off Priscilla was very silly. Given the way she is presented, as a flighty, slightly clueless party-girl, I found it hard to buy that she becomes a savvy, tough investigator of the murders that happen at the Savoy. It just didn't hold together for me, and based on how Priscilla is written at the beginning of the book.
The name-dropping of the many celebrities who stayed at the Savoy was fun. I enjoy a little celeb-watching as much as the next person and that was a neat feature of this book.
The murders and the resolution of how and why they happened was fine. It wasn't the most spectacularly clever murder mystery I've read, but again, it was fine.
I didn't love this book (as has probably become apparent from this review) and I won't be reading future installments, but for a different reader this could be a very enjoyable read. It just wasn't a great fit for my perspectives and interests.

4/5- I really enjoyed this! It was a fun, light read with enough mystery to keep me engaged. I could see this being easily turned into a TV series with its glamorous setting and famous cameos. I also genuinely didn't know who had done it until the last moment. The reason I can't give it a full 5 is because of one too many references to how beautiful and leggy the main character is which, although fun and silly at first, ended up brinigng me out of the book quite a bit. I intend on buying the next one when its out to see where Pricilla goes from here.

Loved it! I really hope this book gets optioned for a series. These two authors compliment each other and I love that is based on Prudence Emery's own experience. I am now reading Nanaimo Girl, her memoir.
And I hear there will be another installment in the series. I can't wait!

1963 London is an intoxicating, exciting time. Hollywood stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton can be seen, bickering in bars. Noel Coward might not be too far away, champagne glass in hand. And if the night is right and the light is right, you might even catch a glimpse of Princess Margaret, all at the Savoy Hotel. Quite the grand place to be seen. Unless, that is, there's a dead body in one of the rooms and you're a young hotel worker from Canada and the police have their eyes on you as the murderer. Such is the problem facing the young, attractive Priscilla Tempest.
It doesn't help that Priscilla tends to enjoy the perks of her job (being in the press office for the Savoy) such as the slightly-more-than-occasional champagne, and she always seems to fall for the wrong man - one who brings trouble wherever he goes. So when it is learned that Priscilla spent time with the deceased man (who was an illegal arms dealer) the night before he was found dead, Scotland Yard's Inspector Robert Lightfoot and the hotel's manager, Clive Banville, keep the young Canadian until a close watch.
Since she knows she's not the murderer, Priscilla must find a way to elude Lightfoot, keep out of trouble but keep Banville happy, and uncover the real culprit. It's a good thing she's got tenacity going for her!
I haven't read a lot of historical fiction set in the 1960's but, hey, why not? It was maybe as an exciting time and as full of dramatic social change as was the 1920's. And for some of us, the people and places that put the history into perspective are still familiar in our minds. So: the Savoy Hotel, 1960's Liz Taylor & Richard Burton, a murder mystery ... a recipe for success! But that recipe still needs to be baked right, and this one isn't quite.
There might have been a little too much time spent trying to establish the historical aspects, and tossing around the familiar (real) people to give this some context, and not enough time actually letting us in on who Priscilla really is. I never felt as though I got a good sense of her character and what makes her worthy of having her own story. She's quite unremarkable with just enough spunk to keep us reading.
But my general reaction throughout the book was: "What? Why"
Even the whole concept of being set in the 60's was a let-down. This could have been in the 20's. Or the 40's. There was just nothing special about the time-frame other than the names of the people who passed through the space.
I'm not sure how many books there are in the series, but this is probably the last one for me.

J'avais acheté ce livre parce qu'il est édité chez La Martinière comme Mort Compte Triple. Le cosy mystery est un genre qui me plait beaucoup mêlant la réflexion de l'enquête et l'humour bien dosé. Cependant, autant on retrouve l'humour British dans Mort Compte Triple qui apporte de la légèreté autant dans Bienvenue à l'hôtel Savoy - tome 1: Le Crime de la chambre 705. Heureusement j'ai pu me procurer ce livre à 9,90€ grâce à une offre découverte parce que j'ai été un peu déçue. J'ai dû achever ma lecture en plusieurs fois de manière saccadée et j'ai plus été motivée par le fait de finir ma lecture pour passer à autre chose que pour continuer l'enquête. Même en lisant un cosy mystery, il est important d'être tenue en haleine pendant toute l'histoire jusqu'à même croire qu'on lit notre dernier chapitre pour la journée alors qu'on en lit encore une dizaine. De plus, je pense qu'il est important de noter que l'histoire se passe dans les années 1960. Or, je me sentais un peu en décalage que ce soit par l'attitude des hommes envers la protagoniste Priscilla ou même par la pression sans cesse des supérieurs dans la haute société pour faire taire leurs secrets. Peut-être que certains aimeront ce retour dans le passé pour un brin de nostalgie mais pour ma part, cela m'a plutôt ennuyée. Ainsi je me tournerai plutôt vers Les Dames de Marlow enquêtent - vol. 3: Poison en huis clos que Bienvenue à l'hôtel Savoy - tome 2: Qui a tué Miss Kane ?. Néanmoins ce sera toujours un livre de plus à mon reading challenge...

Un livre qui trainait dans ma PAL depuis un petit moment, qui me faisait envie depuis quelques temps et que je n'ai jamais pris le temps de lire. Et puis, hier, je me suis dis "j'ai envie d'un livre audio" et j'ai choisi celui-ci. Je l'ai lu en une journée.
C'est une histoire très prenante. Il y a du suspense, on a envie de savoir la fin, de comprendre ce qu'il s'est passé dans cette fameuse chambre 705 ! Tout tourne autour du personnage de Priscilla, jeune attachée de presse de l'hôtel Savoy, canadienne et qui détonne dans le paysage de cette hôtel de luxe. Pour autant, j'ai adoré ce personnage. Elle est totalement imprévisible, elle aime un peu trop le champagne et les hommes, et elle sait très bien jouer de ses charmes.
Et évidemment, tout lui tombe toujours sur la tête. Et son plus gros défaut : être une femme. Bon, on ne le cache pas, dès le départ, on nous dit que le Savoy est un monde d'hommes et donc très macho, sexiste et j'en passe. J'ai grincé des dents un grand nombre de fois. Les remarques sexistes m'ont bien agacé mais bon, c'est ancré dans une période où les femmes n'avaient pas le droit de porter des pantalons dans les salons du Savoy, donc imaginez un peu.
Et donc Priscilla est prend pour son grade et j'ai admiré sa patience et son professionnalisme qui ne l'ont pas fait sortir de ses gons. Je crois que j'aurais pu mettre des claques à ces hommes. J'ai du conditionné mon cerveau en mode "c'était il y a 60 ans, calme toi".
En tout cas, c'est un roman que j'ai beaucoup apprécié, qui n'est pas un incontournable, mais ça se lit bien et encore mieux en audio !

Bienvenue à l'hôtel Savoy, tome 1 : le crime de la chambre 705 , signé par Prudence Emery et Ron Base, est publié aux éditions De La Martinière.
Un roman policier a rangé dans les cosy mystères, un roman qui se lit vite et bien , un roman qui fleure bon les sixties, un roman ma foi fort sympathique à découvrir, j'ai passé un agréable moment en compagnie de Priscilla Tempest attachée de presse de l'Hôtel Savoy à Londres.
Nous sommes en 1968, les jupes se font mini, la musique éclate, les moeurs semblent plus libérées, mais l'establishment règne en maitre et Buckingham veille sur ses ouailles...
Un mort dans la chambre 705, cela fait désordre mais un second n'en jetez plus la coupe est pleine surtout lorsqu'il s'agit d'un membre éminent des Tories... Et qui se trouve systématiquement aux premières loges? Priscilla bien sûr! Pas certain qu'elle conserve son job quand l'enquête sera résolue, en attendant elle survit vaille que vaille et mène son enquête.
Un roman où certes l'intrigue frise parfois l'invraisemblance, où les célébrités côtoient le petit peuple, où l'aristocratie fréquente des gens peu recommandables, où les malfrats, le KGB et autres odieux personnages semblent agir en toute impunité. Qu'importe, j'ai passé un très agréable moment , j'ai souvent éclaté de rire malgré les affres de la situation dans laquelle Priscilla se retrouve piégée. Une lecture cocooning qui fait du bien n'en déplaise à certains .

I partly read this one because I have Chris Fowler's Seventy-Seven Clocks, also set partly in the Savoy. The authors call on highly qualified people to back their portrayal of life in a great hotel and I certainly feel that the portrayal rings true with one exception, the constant ringing in of the famous guests. They really are not needed (as a reading of Mr. Fowler's effort would demonstrate). Make the plot fascinating or complex enough and you don't have to have hot and cold Names cluttering up the pages. I grant you that Fowler's plot is more than a little bizarre, but rather that than falling over Noel Coward every time you turn around. I doubt if the press secretary would be kept on if she drank the way Priscilla does and I doubt if MS Emery did.
I did like the descriptions of the hotel, definitely not where I either stayed or dined when in London and feel that the book would have been improved with a little less free loading on MS Tempest's part and definitely more time spent on her job. Fowler had the same problem with his front desk clerk's use of time but at least he acknowledged that it was a problem and the girl quit her job at one point because she was so involved in the mystery.
If I weren't so familiar with the other book I might have enjoyed this more and I may even try the second in what might become a series, but I really hope for far fewer hotel guests.

Un hôtel prestigieux, au cœur des années 60....
Un corps est retrouvé dans la chambre 705... Priscilla Tempest, l'attachée de presse de l'hôtel va se retrouver au centre des soupçons... Et pas que...
J'ai beaucoup BEAUCOUP aimé ce 1er tome. J'ai tendance à adorer les histoires qui se passent dans les hôtels ou les immeubles !
J'ai donc suivi la vie de l'hôtel Savoy. Les employés, les habitudes, la hiérarchie et surtout cette pauvre Priscilla Tempest.
Elle est au centre du livre, ballotée dans une tempête d'ennuis, je me suis demandé si l'auteur avait pas un sévère problème avec son personnage ^^
Ça frôle l'acharnement autant de tracas pour une seule femme !
Mais j'ai suivi cette jeune femme avec beaucoup d’intérêt.
J'ai apprécié que l'auteur parsème l'histoire de rebondissement, ça rythme le livre et je n'ai pas trouvé de temps mort ou d'ennuis. C'est assez rare dans ce type de livre. Structurellement les chapitres sont plutôt courts ce qui est appréciable, ça bouge beaucoup. La plume est agréable, simple, fluide, pas de descriptions étouffantes ou inutiles.
J'ai vraiment adoré ce petit cosy crime. Je vais commander les suivants sans hésitation.

Ce livre cochait toutes les cases : une couverture sublime, des meurtres dans le prestigieux Hôtel Savoy dans les années 60, la rencontre de grands personnages comme Pavarotti, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton… et un plan qui nous donne l’impression de nous lancer dans une partie de Cluedo.
Malheureusement je n’ai pas du tout accroché.
Le rythme est très lent, trop lent à mon goût en tout cas.
J’aime beaucoup les descriptions des lieux dans les romans pour me mettre dans l’ambiance, ressentir l’atmosphère. Or ce roman est principalement constitué de dialogues.
J’ai hésité à le terminer mais j’ai beaucoup de mal à délaisser un livre. J’ai eu un espoir à la page 287 (sur 400) mais non… Dommage !

Un hôtel de luxe, Londres, les années 1970, une belle couverture : jackpot !
Si j'ai bien aimé ce séjour au Savoy, ce ne sera cependant pas sans quelques réclamations à la réception.
La plupart des personnages sont un peu insipides, et les personnalités ayant réellement existées présentées dans l'intrigue ont surtout un rôle figuratif. L'héroïne elle-même est bien agaçante : Priscilla juge chaque homme qu'elle rencontre à l'aune de l'attirance qu'il exerce sur elle, ou, plus crûment, de son envie ou non de coucher avec lui. Un peu fatiguant.
L'écriture est un peu lourde et redondante : j'avais l'impression que chaque chapitre commençait par une convocation de Priscilla chez le directeur, dans l'attente de se faire licencier.
Mais je le disais, j'ai quand même apprécié mon séjour !
L'intrigue, bien que mal ficelée, est prenante (tour de force !).
Les chapitres sont courts et entraînants.
Et surtout, cette plongée dans l'univers du luxe est enivrante.
Je reviendrai sans doute séjourner au Savoy pour le tome 2 !

This was an enjoyable read. It gave me Sherlock Holmes vibes but with a female heroine. This book was very fast peace and also very light and easy to read.
I don’t really have anything negative to say about it and I know you will wonder then why is it that I am giving it a low raiting?!, and the reason is that even though I enjoyed it, I just didn’t love it. Like it was good but once I finished it I didn’t have that feeling you get when you know a book is going to stay in your heart and mind for a long time, like it was good but that’s it.
Overall, death at the Savoy was an entertaining read and I recommend it to people that enjoy mystery/detective books like Sherlock Holmes.

La couverture m'a directement attirée. La promesse d'une escapade dans le Londres mondain des années 60 également. Cette dernière était réussie et tout ce côté m'a vraiment plu. Par contre, le côté enquête était nettement moins réussi. Trop de choses arrivent à l'héroïne principale, ça en devient limite ridicule à un moment. Trop d'amateurisme de la part de la police, trop de magouilles et certaines histoires vraiment trop tordues pour être vraies . Je ne sais pas encore si je lirai les autres tomes de la série...

C'est la première fois que je lis un cosy mystery !
C'est totalement nouveau pour moi, et je ne suis pas déçue, même si ce n'était pas non plus extraordinaire !
J'ai trouvé qu'il y avait parfois des longueurs, et des passages pas forcément utiles (mais peut-être que c'est ce qui décrit ce style de roman, et que je ne suis juste pas habituée ?).
En tout cas j'ai bien aimé le personnage de Priscilla. J'ai adoré Eunice ! C'est habituellement le genre de personnage que je ne peux pas me voir, mais la, elle me faisait vraiment rire et elle est aussi super attachante <33

A cute book. I don't regret reading but I wouldn't re-read it.
The overarching story and main plot is a good storyline. The idea of the sort of laymen detective in the admittedly very likeable Priscilla Tempest is a great character.
That being said a lot of that main story got lost in all the little side plots that didn't really need to be there at all. All the tangent storylines kind of muddied up the plot and felt like there was so many ideas and they couldn't pick one to follow. Sometimes it felt like they're just trying to fill pages.
Will I read another Priscilla Tempest?
Probably.
If I could only keep 10 books in my house would this be one of them?
